For cinephiles who haven't been hammered by the credit crunch, this year's holiday season could very well be the perfect time to upgrade the ol' home theater to high-def. With electronics manufacturers and retailers both feeling the pinch, consumers can expect deep discounts on a variety of Blu- ray players.
If you do decide to make the leap to Blu-ray, there's no better way to experience its all-around awesomeness than with a computer-animated flick. Because they aren't shot on film and thus never leave the digital realm, animated films can be transferred to Blu-ray with virtually no loss of quality.
The summer hit Kung Fu Panda arrived on Blu-ray yesterday, eschewing Hollywood's traditional Tuesday release schedule. Pick it up and experience what might have been the best animated flick of 2008, were it not for Wall-E and all of its "brilliance" and "poignancy." Whatever.

The big-screen remake of Get Smart, starring Office funnyman Steve Carell in the role of comically inept secret agent Maxwell Smart, leads this week's batch of new DVD releases*. Also debuting today on DVD: Machinist director Brad Anderson's indie thriller Transsiberian, starring Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley; the animated holiday special Shrek the Halls; the straight-to-DVD animated comedy Futurama: Bender's Game ; and yet another completely unnecessary pair of Star Wars box sets.
(*This week's other major release, the Dreamworks animated hit Kung Fu Panda, arrives on DVD Sunday, November 9. More on that later.)

The animated family comedy Kung Fu Panda dominated the box office over the weekend, earning $60 million and scoring an easy victory over You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Adam Sandler's latest comedy was certainly no slouch, however, taking in a respectable $40 million in its debut.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took third place with a $23 million tally, boosting its overall domestic gross to $253 million in just over three weeks. Last week's box office champ, Sex and the City, slid to fourth place with a $21 million take in its second week in theaters. Rounding out the top five was the home-invasion horror The Strangers, which took in just over $9 million.

In just over a month, the first big animated movie of the summer comes out. In Kung Fu Panda, Jack Black stars as Po, a slacker Panda who must learn Kung Fu to save his way of life. Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan,Lucy Liu, and Seth Rogen all lend their voices to the cast, as well.
We can sometimes be scrooges about animated features, but even have to admit that the art on this one looks ridiculously cute. Plus, voicing a lazy martial artist panda seems like the perfect gig for Jack Black.
We've got a few early pix for eager fans. To see what's in store, check out our Kung Fu Panda photo gallery.
Next Showing: Kung Fu Panda opens nationwide on June 6.
