Journey to the Center of the Earth, Brendan Fraser's adaptation of the classic story from Jules Verne, leads this week's crop of new DVD releases. Also debuting on DVD: the toy-inspired Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, starring Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin as a Depression-era investigative journalist; and Tinker Bell, Disney's straight-to-video tale of the Peter Pan fairy's adventures, featuring the voices of Raven-Symone, America Ferrera, and Lucy Liu.

At a recent press day for Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas confirmed that there are indeed plans for more American Girl movies in the pipeline.
The next American Girl to see her story make it to film? Julie Albright. "We are developing the Julie character," Goldsmith-Thomas said, "and we're doing her as a musical, as a high school musical."
"We're going to have all those great songs from the '70s," she continued. "Julie: An American Girl Musical. It's in San Francisco."
The movie is just in outline form as of now, so Goldsmith-Thomas was unable to confirm much more about it, but she did say the music will include both original songs written for the movie as well as music from the 1970s, and that they intend to do more open auditions like they did for Kit Kittredge. "Oh, you betcha," she said.

I recently had the pleasure of talking with actress Joan Cusack in an interview to promote her brother John's indie war satire, War, Inc., which opens this weekend.
Cusack (Joan, that is), also happens to be starring in the next American Girl Doll movie, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which opens on the July 4 weekend. She revealed that she plays a librarian with a mobile book cart (like the '30s version of one of those library vans). Her role was not one originally in the American Girl lore. "It's something they added on," she explained.
A mother of two boys, Cusack was new to Amerian Girl mania . "I did have a somewhat commercialized view of American Girl," she admitted, "but at the end of the day, I was a convert. They're great stories for girls. I was shocked at the content of it."
So what's so great about Kit Kittredge and American Girl? "It's totally empowering," she said. "This one's about prejudice, which is fascinating, too. Kids get all that. They get it more than anyone because they're still feeling."
Keep an eye out for more from Cusack on War, Inc. tomorrow.
Next Showing: Kit Kittredge hits theaters everywhere on July 2.
