• Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks G.I. Joe

  After a couple of heavy, emotional movies, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was happy to take on the Cobra Commander role in the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.   With Comic-Con underway, some of us can't help but revisit childhood memories as we see some of our favorite heroes and villains being revived. With G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra coming out next year, fans have been waiting to see what some of their beloved characters are going to look like in this new take on the classic. The new one-sheets being displayed on the convention floor do not disappoint, showing Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Channing Tatum (Duke), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), and Sienna Miller (Baroness) suited up and ready for action with the movie's snazzy new logo.

• New Images of the Cast of G.I. Joe

  After scattering images of the G.I. Joe cast all over the internets for the past few days, the folks at Paramount did us a huge favor and released them all in one big batch today. From the looks of it, characters Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes and the rest of the real American heroes have all gotten the modern superhero movie makeover: sleek, form-fitting black costumes with shiny armor plates that conveniently enhance each actor's musculature. We like what we've seen so far, but we'll reserve final judgment until we see what they're able to do with Gung Ho, the Village People dropout who serves as the Joes' Recondo (Reconnaissance Commando Doughboy).

  The fine folks over at JoBlo.com have the first official image of Rachel Nichols as G.I. Joe's Scarlett, and while we're still bitter that producers ignored our suggestion of Lindsay Lohan for the role of the Joes' feisty, red-haired counterintelligence expert, we're pleased as punch to see the P2 star Nichols dressed in leather and ready for action. • Gordon-Levitt Talks G.I. Joe with Maltin

  Leonard Maltin interviewed Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently about his latest role in Stop-Loss. Since the actor is currently shooting a hush-hush role as Cobra Commander in the forthcoming blockbuster, G.I. Joe, Maltin managed to pull a little info on the famed hooded (or helmeted depending on which incarnation) leader of evil in the classic G.I. Joe world.

• From Stop-Loss to G.I. Joe

  After playing a PTSD-addled veteran in Kimberly Peirce's (Boys Don't Cry) somber Iraq War-themed flick Stop-Loss, rising star Channing Tatum (Step Up) shifted to a war movie with a considerably different tone: the big-budget 2009 tentpole flick G.I. Joe, in which he plays the battle-hardened second-in-command Duke. At a recent press event to promote Stop-Loss, Tatum commented on the strange transition:

  "This (Stop-Loss) being a war film, I was really opposed to doing another," Tatum said. "I was like, I'm not gonna do a fictitious war movie in a time of war. But then I read the script and talked to everyone involved and it really has nothing to do with politics or war at all. It's a total comic book. It's X-Men and Mission: Impossible. That's really the only way I could capture the movie."

  A fan of the original '80s animated series, Tatum admitted to being a bit starstruck when paired alongisde Ray Park, who plays Joe team ninja Snake Eyes. "Snake Eyes looks pretty cool in person, I gotta say," he recounted. "He was always my favorite character. To see him standing next to you is just like, 'Whoa!'"

• Dennis Quaid gears up to play General Hawk in G.I. Joe

  Going into production next week is the eagerly awaited live-action G.I. Joe flick, with Dennis Quaid headlining an (almost) all-star cast. At today's Vantage Point press day, the Enemy Mine star talked about playing Joe leader General Hawk:

  "He's kind of a cross between Chuck Yeager, Sergeant Rock and maybe a naïve Hugh Hefner thrown in there," he joked. "General Hawk's aide-de-camp is a Victoria's Secret supermodel. I mean, how serious can it be?"

  Quaid went on to say that the story will be set "a little bit in the future. In a way, the Joes are like this international, sort of special forces type of group that mainly fight these terrorist groups that spring up. The movie is more like James Bond, with the group being SPECTRE -- there's this evil mastermind that's behind it."

  Speaking of evil masterminds, who will be playing Cobra Commander?

  G.I. Joe is slated for an August 2009 release. Vantage Point opens nationwide on Friday, February 22nd.

• This is Destro?

  Respected hard news outlet IESB.net is reporting that David Murray (Batman Begins, King Arthur) has joined the burgeoning cast of the highly anticipated (at least by Jeff Otto and I) live-action G.I. Joe flick. According to IESB, the UK-based Murray is slated to play the iconic villain Destro, trusted advisor to terrorist leader Cobra Commander.

  The news is a tad underwhelming, considering that Destro is G.I. Joe's most recognizable character and Murray is a relative unknown. Some of you may recall our G.I. Joe Casting Smackdown, in which Jeff and I made our own recommendations. You're telling us Vin Diesel wasn't available?

• ReelzChannel Casts G.I. Joe   

  Okay, so the G.I. Joe movie is still a year and a half from hitting theaters, but that doesn't mean we aren't stoked. Tom already put on his camouflage jump suit and refuses to take it off until the screening. Now that's dedication.

  We know Stephen Sommers is directing, we know Stuart Beattie is writing it. But as of yet, there is no cast announced. Mark Wahlberg and Jason Statham have been rumored, but nothing is official yet.

  So ReelzChannel's own Thomas Leupp and Jeff Otto decided it was time to square off, mono a mono, and offer their casting advice to the filmmakers of the G.I. Joe movie.

  They started with five of the major characters - Duke, Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes, Scarlett and Destro - but plan to head deeper into the famous characters in part 2.

• Maguire plans live-action Robotech flick

  Look for more giant robots to invade the big screen soon. On the heels of the blockbuster success of Transformers, Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to the popular '80s animated series Robotech, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tobey Maguire will produce through his creatively titled Maguire Entertainment company. He'll also likely star.

  A Japanese import re-edited with English dialogue, Robotech featured dudes running around inside huge robot-shaped crafts knows as "mechs." As with other anime shows like Speed Racer and Voltron, there was always something vaguely disturbing about Robotech, as if the entire storyline had been crafted during one huge acid trip. Acid, apparently, being the preferred drug of Japanese animators.

  In the '80s, Robotech fans ranked somewhere beneath He-Man and male My Little Pony aficionados in the grade school hierarchy, and were often beaten up for the lunch money by the cooler, tougher G.I. Joe kids.

• Beattie a "Real American Heroeee"

  G.I. Joe has a screenwriter, which may beg the question, does this movie really need a script? I know I staged some pretty kick-a** epic battles in my room yesterday when I was a kid and I didn't need no stinkin' script.

  Anyway, Hollywood Reporter announced that Stuart Beattie (Collateral, 30 Days of Night) will now pen the script for the upcoming action flick based on the popular Hasbro toy line. He joins director Stephen Sommers (Van Helsing, The Scorpion King). No cast is announced as of yet, but the movie is planned for a summer 2009 release.

  All I can say to Beattie is, you better make Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow cool or I will hunt you down with my army of plastic Hasbro figures. Yeah, that's right.

• '80's Ahoy - Dallas and G.I. Joe coming to theaters near you

  Love your '80s nostaliga trips? You're in luck.

  Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) pitched his heart out to the execs at Paramount on Weds night and they were hearing what he was putting it out there. The studio hired him in the room to direct a live-action version of G.I. Joe, and is now looknig for a writer. Filming is scheduled to start in Febuary and the movie will come out during summer 2009.

  And director Betty Thomas has been hired to direct a comedic adaptation of Dallas. The movie was previously slated to be a drama, with Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) attached to direct, but it will be going in a different direction. John Travolta is still attached to star as J.R. Ewing, although as he told us during the Hairspray junket, that is pending his approval of the script, which will now be written by Pam Brady (Hot Rod).
