S. Abraham Ravid, a professor of finance at Rutgers, has spent the last ten years studying star impact on box office performance. His conclusion: "Star participation has no statistical correlation with the success of a movie, no matter how you define 'a star' or how you define 'success.' " He also adds, "Good screenplays drive good movies." Even so, we're thankful for stars. Can you imagine what TMZ.com and Perezhilton.com would be if all they did was focus on the DUIs, divorces, and rehab stints of screenwriters? They'd be busier, sure, but also much less aesthetically appealing.

Two of this summer's biggest box-office flops, theWachowski Brothers' trippy update of Speed Racer and MikeMyers' disastrously ill-advised comedy The Love Guru, headline this week's DVD Tuesday. Also debuting today: the romantic comedy Madeof Honor, featuring a Michelle Monaghan and a kilt-wearing Dr.McDreamy; Young@Heart, the acclaimed documentary about agroup of senior citizens who sing cotemporary rock songs; and Special Editionre-releases of Risky Business, Weird Science, and Beetlejuice.
Our DVD pick for the week is 88 Minutes, starring Al Pacino as a blustery forensic psychiatrist haunted by one of thekillers he put away. Check out its alternate ending and see if it improves onthe (somewhat lame) original.

Yahoo! News is reporting that Mike Myers' return to comedy, The Love Guru, might not play in India. The movie, about an American who was left at an Indian ashram as a baby and then puts his schooling there to use as an unorthodox self-help guru, has raised hackles in the hindu community.
Universal Society of Hinduism president Rajan Zed accuses it of 'lampooning Hinduism' (which it obviously is) and is calling for India's Central Board of Film Certification and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban the movie throughout India. For their part, the Central Board of Film Certification denies ever receiving an official request.
The real question is: Are these groups calling for the movie to be banned because it is poking fun at Hinduism or because it just isn't funny?

If you're anything like me, you actually let your Tivo run through the commercials during last night's The Daily Show when you saw the trailer for Mike Myers' long-awaited return to the cinema, The Love Guru, come up.
Then you watched it and realized that if these were the best moments of the movie they could muster up for the trailer, it isn't going to be very funny at all--even if you do see Justin Timberlake playing a goofy French Canadian in bikini underpants.
To see The Love Guru trailer for yourself, head over to Slashfilm.com.

Mike Myers has created a new character for the silver screen, and this one doesn't wear velour leisure suits. The Love Guru will star Myers as a man who was left at an Indian ashram as a baby and then raised by gurus and must use his enlightenment to help a troubled couple, says Variety.
Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four,Sin City), Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Blades of Glory) and Verne Troyer (Austin Powers' Mini Me) will costar.
Variety is also reporting that the sequel to Steve Martin's 2006 The Pink Panther is under way. Pink Panther 2 will feature Martin again reprising his role as Clouseau. Jean Reno (The Da Vinci Code, Ronin) and Emily Mortimer (Match Point, Lovely & Amazing) will also return.
The script, which will be directed by Harald Zwart (Agent Cody Banks), has also attracted John Cleese (A Fish Called Wanda, Monty Python), Andy Garcia (When a Man Loves
a Woman, Ocean's Thirteen) and Alfred Molina (Spider Man 2, Magnolia) to the cast. Pink Panther 2 will come out on February 13, 2009.
Finally, The Hollywood Reporter has more casting news on the still Untitled Adam Sandler/Anna Faris comedy about the outcast Playboy bunny who becomes house-mother to a lame sorority. Monet Mazur (40 Days and 40 Nights), Beverly D'Angelo (National Lampoon's Vacation), and Colin Hanks (Orange County) are all joining the cast.
