It's a movie industry truism that when times are tough, the hoi polloi long to see Hollywood millionaires falling off rooftops and smacking each other around. During The Great Depression, Reuters reminds us, "families flocked to madcap movies by Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, and the Three Stooges." This year, the beneficiaries of our financial woes have included Tropic Thunder, Step Brothers, and Get Smart. And now, of course, Four Christmases is the current box-office champ. Which can only lead to the frightening conclusion that audiences are even more desperate now for a laugh than when they were sleeping in cardboard boxes and surviving on sandwiches made out of old newspapers. Indeed, as long as Four Christmases is the country's #1 hit, we're officially in The Even-Greater Depression.

America's favorite TV nitwit, Office star Steve Carell, is close to a deal to reprise his role as bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart in a sequel to the summer comedy Get Smart, The New York Daily News is reporting. Though considered a mild disappointment by many in the movie industry, Get Smart still managed to earn upwards of $230 million worldwide -- more than enough to justify a follow-up.
Helping the Get Smart 2 deal movie forward is the fact that funnyman Carell has thus far avoided pulling a Terrence Howard. The Daily News quotes studio sources as saying things like, "We're not having any difficulty with Steve," and "He's not asking for ridiculous money." Huh. How shockingly reasonable.
No word yet on whether Get Smart costars Anne Hathaway or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will return for the sequel.

The big-screen remake of Get Smart, starring Office funnyman Steve Carell in the role of comically inept secret agent Maxwell Smart, leads this week's batch of new DVD releases*. Also debuting today on DVD: Machinist director Brad Anderson's indie thriller Transsiberian, starring Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley; the animated holiday special Shrek the Halls; the straight-to-DVD animated comedy Futurama: Bender's Game ; and yet another completely unnecessary pair of Star Wars box sets.

Apparently the "advanced Swiss Army knife" used in Get Smart is a fully functional prop.
Check out Gizmodo's article for the actual schematics for the pocket knife with a working flamethrower and crossbow.
Don't try this at home...

Jill Simonian is a correspondent for Dailies (ReelzChannel TV, weeknights @ 6PM ET), and occasionally shares stories from the field. This week: Get Smart
Ok. So Steve Carell kisses Dwayne Johnson in Get Smart. Thought I'd get that out of the way. More about that later though. This one's about Steve's kicks.
As in SHOES. No, I'm not referring to Maxwell Smart's famously absurd shoe-phone-gadgets from the '60s TV show. Turns out that Carell himself has good shoes. Anne Hathaway told him so on the day of our recent junket interviews for the movie. And thanks to their antics together in Get Smart, I am officially "Carell-ed Away." (And so is Dwayne Johnson! Ha!)
Back to the junket: Earlier that day, Anne told us that she learned much on-set about comedy from working with Steve and Alan Arkin (2006's Little Miss Sunshine's 'grandpa'... also in Smart).
So, when I asked Steve about "what he learned" from working with Anne, he simply teased "her inner beauty and fashion sense," followed by a chuckle. Seriously, he cited her talent, kindness, obvious good looks, and gushed about her staggering ability to whip out super-high kicks -- as her own stunt double -- in some of the movie's powerhouse action scenes involving 7'2" two-time Mr. India bodybuilder, Dalip Singh. (Note: watching Steve go against this giant is classic Carell!) But Steve was also excited to boast that -- on the day of our interviews -- Anne complimented him for the very first time on a fashion choice... his new white sneakers. Cute.
But the real question is: Are they equipped to make international calls?
Get Smart opens nationwide Friday, June 20.

ReelzChannel.com got an early look at one of the summer's biggest comedies, Get Smart, at Cinevegas and we've got an early Get Smart review.
Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway offer respectable homages to the work of the original show's Don Adams and Barbara Feldon. Fans of the show should enjoy a few knowing nods to the original episodes as well. Check out the full Get Smart review for more.
