Carell and a great cast offer breezy summer fun.

When I first heard that they were making a Get Smart movie, my reaction was little more than a shrug. After all, with everything from The Honeymooners to Dukes of Hazzard being translated to (and usually butchered on) the big screen, it's only a matter of time before every bit of warm and fuzzy baby boomer nostalgia is shoved into your local megaplex.

But when Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway were cast as Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, respectively, interest peaked for both show loyalists and laymen. Not only were these two an inspired bit of casting when stacked against original players Don Adams and Barbara Feldon, but Carell is amongst the most likable actors out there (we can forgive and forget on Evan Almighty) and Anne Hathaway is a smart, likable young actress showing some great promise.

The new take on the classic show finds Maxwell Smart as the top analyst for the secret government organization CONTROL. Smart is tired of his desk job and longs to see some action in the field as an agent. His detailed reports draw mockery around the office and few believe he has the chops for field work. When he passes the agent test with flying colors, The Chief (Alan Arkin) tells him that he's simply too good as an analyst to become an agent. Get SmartBut when an attack from crime syndicate nemesis KAOS (headed by Terence Stamp as Siegfried) leaves CONTROL crippled, Smart is promoted to agent status and given his new partner, Agent 99 (Hathaway).

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson co-stars as Smart's venerable cohort, the heroic Agent 23 and Borat's Ken Davitian plays Siegfried henchman, Shtarker. Get Smart is directed by Peter Segal (Anger Management, The Longest Yard).

Get Smart is a near-perfect vehicle for Carell, who plays a more intelligent and less offensive variation on his infamous Michael Scott character from The Office. He carries the movie from start to finish, delivering lines that really shouldn't be funny but somehow work only because of his inexplicable knack for pitch-perfect comic timing.

Hathaway is relegated to "straight man" status, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Besides the looks, Hathaway has an undeniable real-girl likability combined with an intelligence that elevates every role she's in. She and Carell don't exactly have electric chemistry, but she does a commendable job setting Carell up for the laughs before stepping aside to let him do his thing.

Director Peter Segal does what he does, delivering a comedy with enough laughs to please the summer crowds. Unfortunately, a strong start soon teeters back to the expected formulaic territory. Audiences will likely recall a clever moment or two upon exiting the theater, but the bulk of the flick will escape from memory by the next morning's cup of coffee.

Get Smart succeeds as escapist summer fare. It isn't on the same comedic plane as recent Judd Apatow works, for example, but then again it does have the advantage of being a comedy you can take the entire family to. Get Smart delivers the laughs along with some decent action and Carell is in total command as Maxwell Smart.

  • Steve Carell’s Got Good Kicks
    Jill Simonian

Jill Simonian is a correspondent for Dailies (ReelzChannel TV, weeknights @ 6PM ET), and occasionally shares stories from the field. This week: Get Smart

Ok. So Steve Carell kisses Dwayne Johnson in Get Smart. Thought I'd get that out of the way. More about that later though. This one's about Steve's kicks.

As in SHOES. No, I'm not referring to Maxwell Smart's famously absurd shoe-phone-gadgets from the '60s TV show. Turns out that Carell himself has good shoes. Anne Hathaway told him so on the day of our recent junket interviews for the movie. And thanks to their antics together in Get Smart, I am officially "Carell-ed Away." (And so is Dwayne Johnson! Ha!)

Back to the junket: Earlier that day, Anne told us that she learned much on-set about comedy from working with Steve and Alan Arkin (2006's Little Miss Sunshine's 'grandpa'... also in Smart).

So, when I asked Steve about "what he learned" from working with Anne, he simply teased "her inner beauty and fashion sense," followed by a chuckle. Seriously, he cited her talent, kindness, obvious good looks, and gushed about her staggering ability to whip out super-high kicks -- as her own stunt double -- in some of the movie's powerhouse action scenes involving 7'2" two-time Mr. India bodybuilder, Dalip Singh. (Note: watching Steve go against this giant is classic Carell!) But Steve was also excited to boast that -- on the day of our interviews -- Anne complimented him for the very first time on a fashion choice... his new white sneakers. Cute.

But the real question is: Are they equipped to make international calls?

Get Smart opens nationwide Friday, June 20.

  • LIVE FROM COMIC-CON: WARNER BROS. PRESENTATION

Jeff Otto here at Hall H at Comic-Con with live updates from the Warner Bros. presentation.

Things just got rolling here and we were shown about 5 minutes from Get Smart. The footage looks great. Tons of laughs, lots of action. It ended with a scene in which Carell, as Maxwell smart, vomits in an airplane he is piloting. The vomit bag comes open and vomit goes everywhere. Big Applause.

Now director Pete Segal, The Rock, Steve Carell, Ken Davidian (Azamat from Borat) and a few other cast members have come out.

Carell, joking, says that Pete Segal never wore pants or underwear on set. "I found that funny," says Carell.

"Especially because he wanted us to call him Big Pete," says the Rock. Big laughs.

A nervous fan is taking forever to ask a question.

Carell interupts, yelling "ASK THE QUESTION! ASK THE QUESTION! WE DON'T HAVE ALL DAY HERE!"

Greeting from Nicole Kidman has been taped and is airing for Invasion.

"It's an interesting twist on the original," Kidman says of Invasion.

Clip from Invasion now. Footage looks all right, but nothing major. Very quick.

Now we are seeing footage from an upcoming horror movie called One Missed Call. It's met with rather lukewarm applause.

Now the stars Shannyn Sossman and Ed Burns have joined for a Q & A.

Burns is asked about a sequel to Confidence.

"Like most of the films I'm in, it came out and died at the box office, so that pretty much killed any sequel." Lots of laughs.

Now we are getting the world premiere of Roland Emmerich's 10,000 B.C. It looks like Apocalypto meets Jurassic Park. Very tepid reaction from the crowd.

Footage from Whiteout... Again kind of mixed reactions.

Joel Silver is out for a Q & A now.

Silver on Speed Racer: "The races are just unbelievable."

Kate Beckinsale is supposed to be here, but isn't showing up. They show the Whiteout footage again. People still seem unimpressed.

Finally, Silver disappears and returns with Beckinsale. Almost looks to be pushing her out.

Kate is asked about playing Catwoman, which she says she'd consider. She's not sure about more black latex.

The panel seems to go on forever and people are getting restless. We want The Dark Knight!

Now footage from Trick 'R Treat. Actually looks pretty cool.

It's time for Watchmen! And here's Zack Snyder!

Snyder is saying that Watchmen will reflect the time in which it was made rather than directly referencing the current political climate.

He verifies it's an R-rated superhero movie. "Are there other R-rated superhero movies?" Snyder says. "It's an adult movie, whatever that means. If you call me an adult, which is a mistake... I'm not going to make it accessable to teenyboppers."

"We have a lot of sets that we are building in Vancouver. We have a New York City backdrop... We are not going to Mars, which I know if going to disappoint some people... I promise you, if we could, we would. They will not spend the money to send the crew to Mars on an R-rated movie." (Laughs)

He says he cast actors in the middle of the age range of the characters so that he could age them up and down.

"Manhattan needed to be more than a man... When he grows to 200 feet and he's tromping through the jungles of Vietnam, you've got to buy that and believe it."

Some of the cast is coming out. Malin Ackerman (Entourage), who plays Laurie, and Jackie Earle Hayley, who plays Rorschach, join the panel.

Questions about Alan Moore's participation. He is not involved and his name is not on the project. Snyder hopes he will check it out at some point and he hopes he's happy with it, but he understands why Moore has said "F**k Hollywood" up to this point.

Snyder has one last surprise. It's the poster and they are giving it out. It's a drawing from the comic. It has the date: 03.06.09 - DC will have it here at the Con.

And that's it from the Warner's panel. More to come in a bit.
