    Underworld 4 Gets a Screenwriter

    Kate Beckinsale

THR reports that former Shield writer John Hlavin will write the screenplay for Underworld 4. The fourth installment in the franchise is supposedly going to be shot in 3-D and will set up another trilogy of Underworld movies. Hlavin wouldn't say too much about the plot, but he did note that "it's not a prequel."

It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.

Len Wiseman, director of the first two Underworlds will produce, while neither Kate Beckinsale, who starred in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, nor Rhona Mitra, who starred in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, are signed on to return. However, Beckinsale has said that she could be interested in returning if she liked the script.

Kate Beckinsale Suprised by News of Underworld 4

    Kate Beckinsale

News of a fourth Underworld broke nearly four weeks ago, much to the surprise of Kate Beckinsale, who starred in both the first and second installments. Underworld 4 is slated to be shot in 3D and will be the first of a new trilogy of Underworld movies, but when Collider asked Beckinsale about Underworld 4, she wasn't aware of the new developments:

God, three whole more! I don't think my daughter needs to see my bottom in rubber for another ten years. But I don't know, I've heard they're talking about a fourth one, but I don't know if that's officially happening or if that's a rumor. As far as I'm concerned, it's just a rumor.

According to studio Screen Gems, it's not a rumor, especially after Underworld: Rise of the Lycans scored $91 million dollars worldwide, almost triple its budget. However ignorant Beckinsale may have been about Underworld 4, her return to the series is still possible:

[Underworld] was always conceived as a trilogy, which I was never going to be in the third one. I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn't be adverse to it. But it's not planned or anything.

Well it is now. Underworld 4 will arrive in theaters in January of 2011, with or without Beckinsale.

Underworld Creator Gearing Up for Gears of War Trilogy

Len Wiseman, the creative force behind the Underworld series of horror movies, says he has plans to adapt popular video game Gears Of War into a big-screen trilogy.

After nabbing Wiseman on the red carpet at the premiere of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Bloody-Disgusting.com learned that the writer/director/producer became interested in the game after using it in a scene during Live Free or Die Hard, and wants to develop it into a triumvirate of edgy sci-fi movies:

I'm writing 'Gears Of War' with Chris Morgan, who wrote 'Wanted'... It's going to be much more [on the] science fiction side of it than the creature side of it. I've always been much more of a sci-fi action fan than a horror fan... The hope is that we're wanting to do three movies and really cover the bases on everything. Basically a harder edged 'Lord Of The Rings.'

New Clips From Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

Lots of action and splashes of blood fill the screen as the sword-wielding vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra) chops up her father's minions in a prelude to a more direct confrontation with dad in a one new clip from this latest installment in the Underworld franchise. The second clip shows Sonja and her Lycan lover Lucian in a dramatic escape from a fiery prison. A report back from an advance screening of other scenes in this prequel suggests that filmmakers really are trying to up the ante on epic battles here. One scene reportedly has a pack of Lycans literally rising up from the earth in an attack on a horse-drawn carriage. Another features a mass attack on a fortress by 300 werewolves in an echo of the battle of Helm's Deep from Lord of the Rings.

    Are Werewolves the New Vampires?

The Wolf ManAlthough vampires have been the creatures on everyone's lips lately due to the Twilight phenomenon, New York Magazine is taking stock of an overpowering wave of werewolves on Hollywood's horizon. The pack of cinematic lycanthropes will be led by the January 23 release of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (check out the movie's new poster) to be followed on April 3 by the remake of the Wolf Man starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. And there are a litter of lower budget films and not yet finalized projects -- including a rumored werewolf project with Ridley Scott at the the helm --nipping at their heels. The clincher though for NYM, is the prominence of werewolves in the next two Twilight novels, which Summit Entertainment is making moves toward turning into movies as well, starting with New Moon.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans Trailer Debuts at Comic-Con

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

So why do the werewolves and vampires of the Underworld universe dislike each other so much, anyway? We'll find out when Underworld: Rise of the Lycans arrives in theaters next January.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans star Rhona MitraSpeaking at Comic-Con today, Rise of the Lycans director Patrick Tatopoulos explained to the Hall H audience that "we're going to back into the origin of the slavery, when the lycans were overtaken by the vampires, and their quest for freedom, and the incredible love story between the two protagonists, which is Sonja (Rhona Mitra) and Lucian (Michael Sheen) -- Sonja being a vampire and Lucian being a lycan."

Tatopoulos also debuted the as-yet-unfinished Rise of the Lycans trailer, which featured a grungy Michael Sheen inciting his fellow enslaved lycans to revolt against their vampire overlords, followed quickly by copious scenes of werewolves and vampires in battle.

Beckinsale won't be seen in Underworld 3

ReelzChannel.com caught up with Kate Beckinsale the other day at the junket for her upcoming indie flick Snow Angels, and she affirmed fanboys fears that she will not be making any appearances in Underworld 3 (the prequel to Underworld that is to be entitled Underworld: Rise of the Lycans).

Beckinsale said her only involvement with this installment of the franchise is "in a wifely, supportive type way." The actress, who starred in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, is married to the movies' director, Len Wiseman.

"They’re shooting right now in New Zealand and my husband is not directing, he’s producing it," Beckinsale continued. "And my ex (Michael Sheen, who plays Lucian in the series) is the lead."

    "Family franchise," she joked.

Another Underworld movie on the horizon

At the Feast of Love junket yesterday, producer and Lakeshore Entertainment head Tom Rosenberg confirmed that another Underworld movie is definitely in the studio pipeline.

"It's a prequel," said Rosenberg, who is open to the possibility that it may reboot the franchise. While IMDB lists Len Wiseman as a director on the project, Rosenberg would only confirm that the Underworld and Underworld: Evolution director is going to be producing.

No word yet on whether or not Kate Beckinsale or others will be returing, but expect a full announcement from Lakeshore soon.
