David Goyer, writer/director of the upcoming The Unborn told IESB that the DC comic book adaptations at Warner Brothers, movies like The Flash, which Goyer was writing at one point, have been put on hold.
"A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out ... they're going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment. It was the doubleheader of both Iron Man and The Dark Knight coming out, so more than ever I think they've realized, I think DC was responsible for 15% of Warner Brothers' revenue this year, something crazy like that, so they realized that comic books, it's become a new genre, one of the most successful genres."
Also on hold is Goyer's adaptation of X-Men Origins: Magneto, and Goyer told Craveonline: "they [Fox] still want to make it and they're hoping Wolverine will be a big hit and that'll open the way for Magneto."

A foreign object in her eye, bugs in her bra, researching exorcisms on YouTube, and beheading porcelain dolls. They are all on the menu in a Fear.net interview with Odette Yustman about her role in The Unborn. Some of the more uncomfortable scenes to movie came as a bit of a surprise, she confesses. Director David Goyer sneaked in an eye speculum scene without much warning, and she had no idea that the potato bugs crawling all over her could bite. Not to mention the very real earthquake that happened during shooting. And when researching amateur exorcisms on YouTube she found out just how crazy some parents could be. Her childhood did give her a good background for horror though. She says she first watched The Exorcist at the age of 7 and dealt with a fear that her doll collection was possessed by beheading the lot of them with a hammer.

Conventional wisdom says Hollywood overrelies on sex to sell movies, but have you been checking out movie posters lately? Out of Hollywood's 150 top-grossing movies last year, do you know which one boasted the most risque promotional poster? Mamma Mia! Seriously, we are not joking. Unless you have a thing for Ben Stein showing some seriously flirty knee in a schoolboy's uniform, Amanda Seyfried in a shoulder-revealing wedding dress was as provocative as Hollywood got in 2008, poster-wise. (Unless you live in Canada, that is, where they are not afraid to show fully clothed actors making silly faces.)
Just a week into 2009, however, things are looking better, thanks to The Unborn, whose poster features budding scream queen Odette Yustman's better half -- and worst half -- simultaneously. We have no idea why Yustman is hanging out in what appears to be an elegant but shabby subway station restroom in her undies. Or why the ghost of Eddie Munster, menacing her from the mirror, is in such a bad mood. But we're going to this movie, anyway, yes, we are. We don't even need to watch the trailer to convince us.

In an interview with SCI FI Wire, filmmaker David Goyer explains how The Unborn is based on an account of an actual 17th-century Jewish exorcism which apparently didn't go so well -- the "patient" died. It did however provide access to a wealth of less familiar legends and lore pre-dating Christian tradition that Goyer remixed to provide a backstory for the horror.
The Book of Mirrors referenced in the movie is an amalgam of Kabbalah books, and Jewish folklore provided the unique concept behind The Unborn, the idea of an evicted soul searching for a new body.
No mention is made however of why the Jewish tradition of exorcism might be so much hotter than the Christian one. That curiously mixed message seems to have been left to the promotional poster.

A new viral (they hope) promotion for The Unborn invites visitors to take possession personally. The site features a Blair Witch-style YouTube video of a couple of girls moving from a mysterious change of eye color to getting possessed as a presence in the background insists with increasing intensity that it wants to be born now. You are invited to help with the birth by adding the name and picture of a friend (or perhaps enemy) to have them materialize on a TV screen in the girls' room and then e-mail the personalized result.
Check out the trailer below. One of the creepiest in recent memory.

In the first clip from David Goyer's supernatural thriller The Unborn, which just surfaced on MySpace, the eyes have it. Demon-possessed eyes that is. There is no dialogue, but plenty of terror and screaming in this glimpse of a demonic unborn twin who gets stronger with every possession. Just a glance from this ghoulish-looking young boy possessed, and stuff starts flying, people run in terror, and even the priest lets loose with a blood-curdling scream. It looks as if this attempt at exorcism has gone decidedly awry.
