It's good to have a fan base, particularly such a dedicated and relentless one. After a long struggle, Cherrybomb, an edgy coming-of age drama starring Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies), has finally secured a distribution deal. Although it was well received on the film festival circuit, getting Cherrybomb out to general audiences proved more of a challenge. The producer credited the a fan-organized lobbying campaign with making the difference.
With a lot of independent films, it is hard to get them noticed. Rupert Grint has a very dedicated fanbase and it was very much down to them that this started.
Although the exact release date hasn't been fixed yet, it is now expected to hit theaters in the UK in the first half of 2010 and filmmakers are in negotiations with an American distributor.
The trailer already offered a few glimpses at what a different side of Grint this picture will show off, as he competes for the affections of a femme fatale in a wild weekend of drugs and theft. For more on the movie along along with some new clips check out this interview with stars Grint and Kimberley Nixon.

Rupert Grint has a posse. And they are determined that as many people as possible get to see his new film Cherrybomb.
Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, ventures into new territory in this coming-of-age drama, getting caught up in a wild weekend of drink, drugs, shoplifting, and stealing cars while competing for a young woman's affections. Although the new Harry Potter movie is being promoted as "sex, potions, and rock and roll," this movie really does seem to be a step beyond for the young actor who, like Daniel Radcliffe in Equus, will be getting a bit more exposure here than he is used to. If the movie gets released, that is.
Because of the economic crisis, Cherrybomb is having trouble securing distribution rights. And this is where the posse comes in. Unwilling to leave the fate of the movie up to the whims of the market, fans have launched an international petition campaign to make sure that audiences have a chance to see it. Check out the trailer below and see if you think it looks worthy.
