  • Anne Hathaway Plays Alice's White Queen Like a "Punk-Rock, Vegan Pacifist"

Alice in WonderlandLike most of the other curious characters that populate Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the White Queen is quite the piece of eye-candy. Snow White to all appearances, set off by ruby red lips and nails, dark brows, and a hint of whimsy, perhaps even madness, in her eyes. But unlike her sister, the Red Queen, she assumes relatively human proportions, even if she displays a not-quite-so-balanced personality.

The studio has released a new high-res publicity still to highlight her charms, and along with it a Q & A in which Anne Hathaway talks about what it was like to take on the role. She starts off by pointing to some surprising inspirations.

I play the White Queen. When I was trying to work her out, I kept saying to myself, "She is a punk-rock, vegan pacifist." So I listened to a lot of Blondie, I watched a lot of Greta Garbo movies, and I looked at a lot of the artwork of Dan Flavin. Then a little bit of Norma Desmond got thrown in there, too. And she just kind of emerged. And I really like her. When I first came onboard the project, Tim talked a lot about the relationship between the sisters, and that really opened the character up to me a lot. She comes from the same gene pool as the Red Queen. She really likes the dark side, but she's so scared of going too far into it that she's made everything appear very light and happy. But she's living in that place out of fear that she won't be able to control herself.

Since this is not so much a retelling of the classic Lewis Carroll tales as it is a sequel, with an amnesiac Alice revisiting Wonderland, Hathaway goes on to explain how she fits in to the altered landscape.

The White Queen has had her crown taken from her, and she's basically powerless to stop her sister's reign of tyranny. Her sister is the Red Queen. And so, she is waiting. She's basically taken a vow of non-violence that she cannot break, and she's waiting for her champion to arrive to help her reclaim her throne — the citizens of Underland [the true name of Wonderland] would like to see that happen. They want to see her restored to power, because she's kind.

Or at least she seems to be kind. The actress concludes on a note of ambiguity:

I love my character. I love that she seems to be the voice of reason — you'd think that she would be the good queen. But she didn't have to be. I really had a lot of fun playing around with this idea, that what's good in Wonderland is not necessarily good in the real world.

  • In Alice, Johnny Depp Plays the Mad Hatter "Like a Mood Ring"

Alice in WonderlandIn a new short production video, we are invited to look upon some of the many faces of madness offered up by Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Woven in between these images is an interview with Depp, who explains what it was like to play one of that topsy-turvy world's most curious inhabitants.

I play the Mad Hatter. He's mad. He's unpredictable. You see instantly what he's feeling. Like a mood ring, his emotions are very very close to the surface. He's a fascinating character. Being able to play the Mad Hatter and breathe life into that was a dream come true.

Still more of the Mad Hatter and his world can be glimpsed in a new set of images from the movie over at The Sun, including the Cheshire Cat in various poses and a pretty arresting picture of Depp wearing a kilt and wielding a sword.

  • Track List for Alice in Wonderland Unveiled

Alice in WonderlandRumors have been circulating for a while now about what would be included in the soundtrack to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and by and large they turned out to be mostly true. The complete track list has popped up on MySpace, and offers an assortment of songs inspired by the curious characters in the movie — with a pop and goth twist.

Only one song, "Very Good Advice" by The Cure's Robert Smith, is a cover of a tune from Disney's 1951 animated version of Alice. (We've listened to the original on YouTube and are tring to imagine exactly how he might interpret it).

The compilation, Almost Alice, won't hit stores until March 2nd, but a video for Avril Lavigne's "Alice (Underground)" is slated to come out in early February. And now here's the list itself:

    1. Alice (Underground) Performed by Avril Lavigne
    2. The Poison Performed by The All-American Rejects
    3. The Technicolor Phase Performed by Owl City (previously released)
    4. Her Name Is Alice Performed by Shinedown
    5. Painting Flowers Performed by All Time Low
    6. Where's My Angel Performed by Metro Station
    7. Strange Performed by Tokio Hotel and Kerli
    8. Follow Me Down Performed by 3OH!3 featuring Neon Hitch
    9. Very Good Advice Performed by Robert Smith
    10. In Transit Performed by Mark Hoppus with Pete Wentz
    11. Welcome to Mystery Performed by Plain White T's
    12. Tea Party Performed by Kerli
    13. The Lobster Quadrille Performed by Franz Ferdinand
    14. Running Out of Time Performed by Motion City Soundtrack
    15. Fell Down a Hole Performed by Wolfmother
    16. White Rabbit Performed by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

In a bit of very careful target marketing for the release, Disney has also announced that a second "exclusive" version of Almost Alice with two bonus tracks will be available exclusively at Hot Topic.

  • The Red Queen Makes Her Move in New Trailer for Alice in Wonderland

Alice in WonderlandA new trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is out, full of lush imagery and all sorts of hints about the direction of the plot. The Alice story has been around for more than a century, but as we can see here, Burton has his own take on it, and is whimsically reassembling choice bits of Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass into his own unique concoction, which from the look of this impressive trailer might well be labeled "Drink Me."

As previously hinted, this is the story of Alice's return to Wonderland, where things have gone a bit sour. Since her last visit, which she can't remember, the Red Queen has moved in and taken everything over. And Alice, in varying proportions, and eventually in armor, is the champion of the resistance, as armies of chess pieces prepare to go to war in this psychedelic landscape.

There is lots more of Johnny Depp here as a very mad hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and especially Helena Bonham Carter as the equally mad Red Queen, whose lust for power has quite literally gone to her head. Amazing visuals throughout, which you can also explore at a bit less frenetic pace in the new batch of stills released in conjunction with the trailer.

  • Johnny Depp Confirmed in Dark Shadows Adaptation

Johnny DeppAs far back as July 2007, Johnny Depp was rumored to be interested in starring in a theatrical version of the '60s TV series Dark Shadows. In August of this year, Tim Burton, who has directed Depp in several movies, said "the plan" was for him to direct Depp in the Dark Shadows adaptation, but he admitted that it was still in the "early days" of the project.

Now, producer Graham King has confirmed that Depp and Burton will follow up their Alice in Wonderland pairing with Dark Shadows.

We're actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny.

We've been working on the script a lot, even though [Burton's] working on Alice. We've been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We're making some changes, but the film's going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.

  • New Images and Whimsy from Tim Burton's Alice

Alice in WonderlandLots of new glimpses of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland have been leaking out over the last few days. Over the weekend, some scans of a magazine spread with images from the movie popped up, including a first peek at the Caterpillar, who will be played Alan Rickman, perched atop a giant mushroom with hookah in hand.

The spread was followed up this week by a staggered release of new posters for the movie via the Facebook page for The Disloyal Subjects of the Mad Hatter. All have been nicely teased by the Hatter, who is demanding increasing thousands of "likes" for each new peek.

First up is a gorgeous character composite dominated by the imperious Red Queen. After a bit of a delay and 7000 "likes" later, the Hatter deigned to let out a second poster featuring Alice and the White Rabbit amid a psychedelic landscape of tea party, flowers with human faces, and a mysterious door to nowhere. Ever more demanding, the Hatter has now ordered his following to offer up 9000 more "likes" before he releases the final poster. It took a while to fill the last mad order, so if you are anxious to see the final poster in this series, you had better head on over to Facebook and give him what he wants.

  • Michael Sheen Channels His Inner Fluffy White Animal for Burton's Alice

Alice in WonderlandMichael Sheen is strapping on some big ears for his role as the White Rabbit in Tim Burton's gothic adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. To get it right, he's had go a bit down the rabbit hole himself, as he explained to Parade:

Everyone has an inner white fluffy animal, it's just a question of finding it before it's too late. The White Rabbit is such an iconic character that I didn't feel like I should break the mould too much, so I just sort of went with it. The story had a huge impact on me as a child and it's stayed with me ever since, so to be part of Tim Burton's version is just like a dream come true.

Given that it's Burton's vision, we shouldn't expect things to get too fluffy and cuddly, though. A number of the characters we've seen so far in the teasers don't seem like they have anything too fluffy inside. Certainly not Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter in any case.

  • Nicolas Cage's Superman Costume Test

Yes, it's true. Prior to Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, there was indeed a planned version of the rebooted Superman franchise in which director Tim Burton would remake the man of steel in his quirky style — and Nicolas Cage would portray the hero. The surprising thing is that it got past costuming stage, as is evidenced by this leaked video that recently appeared online.

All reports say that this video is legit, and by the looks of it, comic book movie fans dodged a speeding bullet.

  • More New Images from 9

9In terms of eye candy, it's hard to think of a movie this fall that frame-by-frame is likely to deliver as rich and exotic a visual landscape as Shane Acker's 9. More evidence of this is in our gallery of new stills, including a couple of shots of the Cat Beast that was featured in a clip linked earlier today. It's a machine, but one made more alien, and menacing (and weirdly Victorian) by incorporating the skull of a cat into its design.

No doubt it was the potential for imagery like this that got Tim Burton signed on as producer in the first place.

  • Clip from 9 Features the Monster's Point of View

There's a lot of getting into trouble and getting rescued in Shane Acker and Tim Burton's animated post-apocalyptic movie 9. As the band of "stitch punks" explore their landscape, they stumble across all sorts of menacing quasi-mechanical threats to their existence and survive by working together as a group.

Yet, as we see in this new clip from the movie, they have an advantage — some of the nasty critters they're fighting really can't see all that well.

  • Johnny Depp Eyes Dark Shadows

Time to get ready for even more vampires at the cineplex. After Hollywood's long zombie fixation, Twilight brought the children of the night back into vogue and now vampires are crawling out of the woodwork. HBO has True Blood, Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant opens in October, and news recently broke that Robert Downey Jr. is in consideration to play Lestat in a relaunch of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. Now, Johnny Depp might be playing a vampire as well in a Tim Burton-directed remake of the creepy 60s TV series Dark Shadows, which was basically a soap opera with a twist: the lead character, Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid), was afflicted with vampirism. Depp said:

I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins' posters when I was five or six.

When asked about the possibility of making a Dark Shadows movie, Burton said:

That's the plan. There was something very weird about (Dark Shadows), it had the weirdest vibe to it. I'm sort of intrigued about that vibe. It's early days on it, but I'm excited about it.

  • An Armored Heroine for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Alice in WonderlandDespite all the applause that his sneak peek drew at Comic-Con, Tim Burton is still nervous about Alice in Wonderland, reports the LA Times. Dealing with such a complex cocktail of special effects for the first time is driving him as mad as ... well, let's just say he's finding the experience extremely frustrating. As a result, Burton worries that he may be facing a potential logjam of visual effects work right up until the movie debuts in March 2010.

Burton has also set himself the daunting task of assembling an original collage of material drawn from the full range of Lewis Carroll's Alice works. A lot of the vibe he's aiming for in his adaptation of Alice, he says, was drawn from Jabberwocky, a hauntingly surreal poem constructed largely out of words that Carroll just made up. On top of that, he is putting together a complex inner life for his characters. Alice, he tells the Times, will evolve from an a wide-eyed and naive young girl into an empowered action heroine who sports her very own suit of armor — not something you'll find in any of Carroll's works.

Those who spotted the invite and followed the directions found a colorful array of props and images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland at an undisclosed location in San Diego.

On exhibit were surrealistically distorted doors, fresh-faced flowers, and the Hatter's tea table itself, all set up with place markers for some rather eccentric guests. Empire caught the tour and offers a cool video of the experience set to to some appropriately trippy music.

  • Disney: 3D Panel Features Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Tron: Legacy, and A Christmas Carol

    Comic-Con 2009: San Diego

    Alice in Wonderland

One of Thursday's most anticipated events at Comic-Con was the Disney: 3D Panel. The panel didn't disappoint, either, with Robert Zemeckis kicking things off by speaking about 3-D movies as the wave of the future, though not necessarily right for all movies. The main focus of his talk was on his upcoming re-imagining of A Christmas Tale, which is a decidedly eerie take on the classic novel. The clips he showed definitely upped the creepiness factor in Zemeckis' attempt to reach the surreal tone of the book. He also revealed that Jim Carrey will be playing eight roles in the movie, though why Zemeckis would want that is still unclear.

Despite a little wind being kicked out of his sails, Tim Burton's part of the panel was still the highlight. Although the clip he showed was leaked earlier, it still made quite an impression. Plus, Burton still had a surprise up his sleeves, and brought out his friend Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter in Burton's upcoming adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

Last up was the Tron panel, which showed footage from last year in 3-D as well as new clips that weren't yet converted. No new details about the plot or technology that's being used to create the movie were offered, but it was officially titled Tron Legacy and the original Tron's creator, Steven Lisberger, joined Jeff Bridges and director Joseph Kosinski onstage.

We'll have videos from this event and others posted shortly, so stick around.

  • Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Trailer Leaked, Movie in 3-D
    Alice in Wonderland

Anticipation is building around Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Rumours have been circulating that Comic-Con would offer with it some new treats for fans, since Burton himself is there, and apparently those rumours were correct.

Well, almost correct. The teaser trailer was set for Comic-Con, but was leaked to the internet a day early. Since then, Disney has been trying to close up the leak, but many sites still have the footage online. This one, for instance.

We can't guarantee how long the trailer will stay up there, but those who are lucky enough to catch a glimpse will probably be bowled over by the footage. In a nutshell, it's utterly gorgeous, even for Burton, and shows off new footage of the the Cheshire Cat and Tweedledee and Tweedledum. If the rest of the movie looks this good, Alice in Wonderland could be Burton's best-looking feature yet — no easy feat.

Not only that, but the trailer also drops another bomb: Alice in Wonderland will be in 3-D!

  • Tim Burton on How He's Updating Alice in Wonderland

Alice in WonderlandIn an interview with MTV, Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton explains why he chose to update his version of the classic fantasy story — earlier adaptations of the story were too disjointed and episodic, he'd concluded. So in his version, Alice (Mia Wasikowska), now 17, is revisiting a Wonderland that she has forgotten:

We tried to take the Alice mythology and characters and make a story out of it and be true to the spirit of what Alice is about. The other versions for me suffer because there's no movement to it. It's just one weird event after another. We're trying to ground it a little a bit.

As a result, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is going to play a bigger role:

With him, we are always trying to find a subtext and layer to it, so it's rooted in humanity to some degree — something deeper than just being nuts.

And it's not just a complex plot Burton has to assemble. Working with a mix of animation, live-action, and motion-capture has proved to be a "mysterious puzzle that's frightening and exciting at the same time." So, what he has to show this Thursday at Comic Con will not involve a lot of footage. It will be a kind of "semi-trailer." If it comes anywhere close to the promise of the pictures and concept art that have been released so far though, it will be well worth watching.

  • International Trailer for 9 Brings on the Hero

9Although a lot of the recent promotions for Shane Acker's 9 have focused on fleshing out the other numbers of its post-apocalyptic stitch-punk gang, the just-released international trailer puts rag doll number 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) front and center. He is singled out by the scientist who created him with the task of protecting mankind's legacy, now that humans themselves are gone. It's a task made all the more daunting by the far more immediate imperative of simply not falling prey to the host of deadly mechanical beasties that also populate their world.

  • More Photos and Concept Art from Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland

All sorts of new images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland have been appaering lately. Following up on the character posters and amazing concept art that showed up the other day, we now have some full-length character photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Each is posing with an animal: Alice, of course, with a white rabbit, the Red Queen with a baby pig, and the Mad Hatter with another rabbit.

Transitions between the human and animal worlds play a major role in the original Alice books, and this seems to be a signal that the movie will follow suit. Juxtapositions of size and proportion are also key to the magic of the original and some concept art for the movie featuring Alice among giant mushrooms suggests that this is central to Burton's vision of Wonderland as well.

  • Concept Art and Photos from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
    Tim Burton

USA Today goes down the rabbit hole with Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and comes back up with some amazing pieces of eye candy. Alice, played by the Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, is glimpsed wandering in a garden populated by towering mushrooms and flowers with human faces, not to mention being checked out amid some surreal topiary by The White Rabbit. We also get a look the rather disturbing-looking twins, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who resemble giant bloated versions of Pugsly from The Addams Family.

To go along with all this, the studio has also released some appropriately surreal promo photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as The White Queen. The latter two characters are actually drawn from the Wonderland sequel, Through the Looking Glass, so clearly Burton is aiming to give the Lewis Carroll classic his own unique spin.

The USA Today article drops some hints about the direction of these changes, noting that Burton's version features a more grown-up Alice, who begins her adventures by escaping from a snooty Victorian dinner party only to fall back into Wonderland. She had been there once before but for some reason doesn't remember a thing about it.

There's a lot here to explore. Clicking on the machine with the magnifying glass opens up a video of Elijah Wood (the voice of 9's ragdoll hero) introducing the site. Other highlights include elaborate diagrams of various rather baroque machines and some mysterious symbols that open audio clips offering tidbits about what the world was like before the humans disappeared. • A Look at the Seamstress from Tim Burton's 9

9In 9, Tim Button envisions a nightmarish post-apocalyptic future in which earth has been left a charred planet bereft of human presence. Amid the ruins, rag dolls imbued with life confront the other terrifying survivors of the machine age. One such malevolent survivor is the Seamstress, a scorpion-like creature fashioned out of metal and cloth and inspired by the Medusa of ancient mythology.

Dread Central has posted some interesting concept design diagrams for this creation, and the accompanying description is classic Tim Burton macabre:

Fashioned with a doll's head, grasping prehensile arms, an intricate thread-spool mechanism, and hypnotic eyes, the Seamstress lures her prey out of hiding and stuns them into submission before sewing them up within herself.

A recently released clip shows in detail just how formidable this predator can be for the rag doll heroes of 9.

And, as Dread Central goes on to point out, an online prequel is now fleshing out some of the background of the world of 9 in the form of a Facebook diary of the scientist who gave the movie's rag doll hero life.

The release of Sweeney Todd is fast approaching, but Tim Burton is not one to rest on his laurels. The director has lined up two 3-D projects with Disney to start shooting in the new year.

First, Burton will undertake his vision of Alice in Wonderland. The live action version of the Lewis Carroll story will involve the performance-capture techniques currently making waves in Beowulf.

After that, he'll direct a stop-motion digital 3-D version of Frankenweenie, which is bsed on a 1984 short he did about a dead dog brought back to life. Sounds creepy.
