  • Exit Tom Cruise, Enter Christian Bale?

Christian Bale, living godMuch is afoot in the world of director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger). First, Variety announced earlier today that the prolific Australian would be directing Tom Cruise in the cold war spy thriller Edwin A. Salt, about a CIA officer suspected of working with those sneaky Reds. Now, Moviehole is reporting that Cruise is opting out of another planned collaboration with Noyce, the political thriller The 28th Ammendment. But don't weep for poor Philip. Word is that none other than The Dark Knight star Christian Bale might be stepping in to replace Cruise in the lead role, as a newly-elected American president who discovers the truth about who really runs the U.S. government (hint: it's the Freemasons).

Nothing's been confirmed, of course, but it appears that the wheels are indeed in motion to get Bale on board.

    Works for us.

  • Will Smith a Scientologist? Hancock Being Delayed?

The web is abuzz with stories that Will Smith has been outed as a Scientologist. Sites across the web are reporting that Smith allegedly funded a Scientology school and that he and wife Jada Pinkett have been secret members of the Church of Scientology for years.

While we don't usually report rumor stories here at ReelzChannel.com, this one is interesting because of the ties it may have to the July 2nd release of Sony's tentpole Will Smith vehicle, Hancock. Reports initially surfaced that the movie was having problems and was going through reshoots. Now the June 10th World Premiere of Hancock in Sydney, Australia has been cancelled and some sites are even reporting that the movie will be pushed back from its July 2nd release date.

Although Sony is positioning the stories as merely the usual last minute issues finishing effects and the like, the recent reports of Smith's connection to the highly controversial Church of Scientology have many speculating that Sony is trying to avert the diasaster Paramount felt on 2006's Mission Impossible: III. During the promotional campaign for that movie, Tom Cruise's antics promoting the benefits of Scientology alienated many would-be moviegoers and seemed to signal the end for one of Hollywood's most reliable box office cash cows. It also effectively ended Cruise's long run with Paramount.

Since then, Will Smith has claimed the box office throne by a very wide margin. Is Smith destined for the same downfall as Cruise? Let's just hope he's not booked for an Oprah couch-jumping session any time soon...

  • Accident on Tom Cruise's Valkyrie set

    The curse of Valkyrie continues.

Eleven extras were injured yesterday on the Berlin set of the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie about the failed assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler during WWII.

Slats gave way on a truck carrying the extras--dressed as German soldiers--sending them tumbling into the street near the Potsdamer Platz. Ten were treated for minor injuries and one more seriously injured person spent the night in the hospital.

Neither Cruise nor director Bryan Singer were on set of the time fo the accident.

  • First Tom Cruise pix from Valkyrie released!

Cruise von StauffenbergDespite trouble getting things off the ground, it appears as though filming has begun on Valkyrie, Tom Cruise's movie about the 'July 20 Plot' to assassinate Adolf Hitler. In it, Cruise stars as Claus von Stauffenberg, the German army officer who planted a bomb inside Hitler's East Prussian headquarters.

Valkyrie, which is benig filmed on location in Germany, has been plagued by trouble from the get-go thanks to the country's vociferous opposition to the Church of Scientology, with which Cruise is strongly associated.

Most recently, the chief spokesman for the German Protestant Church referred to Cruise as "the Goebbels of Scientology," likening him to the infamous Nazi minister of propaganda, and referred to the Church of Scientology as a "totalitarian organization."

Still, principal photography commenced last week in Berlin and United Artists has released two photos of Cruise in uniform. Click on our Valkyrie page to check them out!

  • Germany gives Cruise mixed messages

The Fatherland is having a hard time figuring out exactly where it stands on Tom Cruise--specifically in terms of his new project, Valkyrie.

The movie, which will be written by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, and directed by Bryan Singer (Superman Returns), is about Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, a German man who was executed for staging a 1944 assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler. Cruise, who will play Stauffenberg, is struggling to shoot on location where the events really took place, Variety is reporting.

While German filmmakers are clearly happy to support a WWII movie that is able to paint their country in a positive light and to bring awareness of a man who is now considered a hero, Valkyrie has hit several snags.

As of June 25, the German Ministry of Defense announced Cruise et al. would not be allowed to shoot at military sights (namely the Bendlerblock building where Stauffenberg was executed) because of Cruise's outspoken relationship with the Church of Scientology, which is considered a "totalitarian cult" by the German government.

But three days later, the Ministry revised its statement, saying the problem was actually that part of its offices are located in the Bendlerblock, and the shooting would be disruptive. The Defense Ministry offered a filming permit if that problem could be solved.

Unfortunately for Cruise, the Finance Ministry overruled the decision on the grounds that that filming in the memorial Bendlerblock would disrespect and exploit its spirit as "a place of mourning."

The team's request to shoot at a Berlin police station was also denied. And Stauffenberg's son, Berthold von Stauffenberg, expressed his intense displeasure at the project by informing Cruise that he "should keep his hands off my father."

However, the news isn't all bad. As of July 5, The German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) announced it will be granting $6.5 million to support the project. That should come in handy if Cruise and the German government can ever agree on where to shoot.

Next Showing: Valkyrie is set to begin filming July 18. We'll see about that.
