  • J.J. Abrams Too Busy for Dark Tower Adaptation?

J.J. Abrams Only days ago, director J.J. Abrams said that he "will not be directing" Mission: Impossible IV, though he is still teaming with Tom Cruise in producing the movie. Now, Abrams has also pulled the plug on helming an adaptation of Stephen King's "magnum opus" novel series, The Dark Tower, about a gunslinging knight on a quest for the nexus of the universe.

Abrams had planned to develop the picture with fellow Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof after the two purchased the rights from King for $19. Abrams told MTV News:

The Dark Tower thing is tricky. It's such an important piece of writing. The truth is that Damon and I are not looking at that right now.

Beyond hinting at The Dark Tower being a difficult property to adapt, which is an understatement, Abrams did not give a specific reason for the decision. It's likely that he will simply be too busy working on the sequel to his highly successful revamp of the Star Trek franchise — and the seven other movies he is said to have in development — to work on such a massive undertaking.

  • J.J. Abrams Won't Direct Mission: Impossible 4, But Maybe Superman?

J.J. AbramsLooks like J.J. Abrams won't return to direct Mission: Impossible 4, which is currently being scripted. "I'm producing with Tom [Cruise]," Abrams told MTV. "My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie."

Ironically, the entire M:I 4 project came together out of Cruise's desire to reunite with Abrams.

Tom asked if I'd be interested in working with him again. I didn't have a sense of what the story would be, but very quickly this idea came to mind, and Tom reacted to it in a way that got me excited, and then we got [Alias writers] André [Nemec] and Josh [Appelbaum] to come onboard, and they began developing the idea with us.

I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created. It's not a reboot kind of thing.

SupermanSo what are the "other things" that would make Abrams unavailable to direct M:I 4? Besides Star Trek 2, Abrams wouldn't mind working on a Superman movie. Abrams wrote an infamous Superman script back in 2002, when fanboy-hater Brett Ratner was set to direct, but his script was never used and the Superman Returns debacle was made instead. Abrams told MTV that returning to Superman would "be a blast."

Writing that script was a long process. It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don't know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast.

No one has talked to me about it. Obviously I'm sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do.

So far, Warners' "plan" has been to have "no current plans" to make a Superman movie.

  • Paul Dano Joins Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz in Action-Comedy

Paul DanoVariety reports that Paul Dano has signed on to star with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in the upcoming action-comedy from director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line). You might remember Dano from his memorable performances as the preacher rival of Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood and as the mute, Nietzsche-reading teen in Little Miss Sunshine.

The Mangold movie, formerly titled Wichita and yet to be renamed, involves a partnership between Cruise and Diaz, who play a federal agent and a perky Midwesterner, respectively. According to IMDb's plot description, they embark on "a whirlwind of globe-hopping adventure and world-changing secrets." One of these adventures involves the pursuit of Dano's character, an enigmatic inventor-scientist.

Shooting begins in Boston next month, and the movie is scheduled for a July 2, 2010 release.

  • Former Alias Writers To Script Mission: Impossible IV

Plans for a fourth film in the Mission: Impossible franchise are picking up steam. It was only a few weeks ago that it was announced that J.J. Abrams will be joining Tom Cruise in making Mission: Impossible IV. Abrams directed Mission: Impossible III, but it's unclear at this point whether he will also be directing M:I IV or whether he's only producing.

Now, there is news that M:I IV is one step closer to being actualized as Cruise and Abrams have hired Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec to write the screenplay for the film based on an Abrams idea. While they are relative unknowns in motion picture circles, Applebaum and Nemec were co-executive producers on the Abrams-created TV series Alias for four seasons. Abrams told Variety:

I’ve been looking forward to working with Josh and Andre again for years. Their sense of balance between character and action is wonderful, which I know is hugely important to Tom (Cruise) as well. We’re off to an exciting start, so, as usual, fingers crossed.

Cruise is actively involved in the production process of M:I IV, but there's no word whether he will star in the film as Ethan Hunt, his character from the first three films.

Next Showing: Mission: Impossible IV is currently slated for a 2012 release

  • Baiting for Oscars

Seven PoundsThe Oscar statuette is the pinnacle of one’s career in Hollywood. Win one of these hallowed golden naked men - standing perfectly erect, arms folded, head high – and a star is once and forever smiled upon by the movie Gods throughout eternity.

So it might come as a surprise that the path to Oscar glory isn’t always that hard to figure out. The Academy certainly has its perennial favorite themes. While they occasionally throw viewers for a loop by making the less expected choice (American Beauty, No Country for Old Men), they have picked the predicted winner more times than not.

Baiting for Oscars has evolved into an art form in Hollywood. Actors will gladly take a pay cut in order to throw their hat into the award season competitions. With such acclaim comes a feeling of accomplishment and, in most cases, career success for years to come. Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way. Just ask Cuba Gooding Jr. or Mira Sorvino.

The 2008 Oscar season is already in full swing, with a few shameless Oscar bids hitting theaters this month. Yes, I’m talking to you, Will Smith and Tom Cruise. As such, we thought the timing was appropriate to take a look at Oscar baiting over the years, both the successes and the failures. Check out our Oscar Baiting Guide for more.

  • Keanu Reeves Signs Up for Sword Saga

Tom Cruise is furious in The Last SamuriTurns out, Tom Cruise is not the last samurai, after all. Keanu Reeves will play the lead in 47 Ronin, which Variety describes as "an epic period film for Universal Pictures based on the true tale of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan." The movie will reportedly mix Lord of the Rings-style fantasy with Gladiator-like gore…and, we're betting, lots of shots of Reeves looking eerily calm. After the lethal yelling and general World Wrestling Entertainment vibe Cruise brought to the samurai world, we're looking forward to Keanu's undoubtedly more Zen-like approach!

Or does he just look dynamically stern and purposeful throughout the entire flick? New clues available tonight, as Yahoo! Movies premieres the movie's official final trailer at 8 PM PT.

  • Tom Cruise Is Not Dead (at Least Not in New Zealand)

Tom Cruise: Not Dead?Tom Cruise's publicist has furiously denied internet rumors that the Valkyrie star recently fell to his death in New Zealand. "This is completely not true. Tom is not in New Zealand nor has he been there recently. This is erroneous and unreliable internet garbage," said Cruise spokesman Jeffrey Raymond. Curiously, Raymond's statement only appears to deny that Cruise was in New Zealand, but leaves the whole death issue wide open.

Were Cruise to have actually perished, world leaders would have no doubt moved swiftly to activate one of his clones, which the three-time Oscar nominee is rumored to have stationed on each of the seven continents. Like the embattled insurance conglomerate AIG, Cruise is considered "too big to fail," as the ensuing fallout would seriously threaten global stability.

(None of that is true, of course, but a ridiculous internet rumor deserves an equally ridiculous response.)

Descending Stalker Track: Cruise, Cusak, Biggs A woman who was once arrested for stalking Tom Cruise, and more recently arrested for stalking John Cusack, is mentally competent to stand trial, a judge says. Certainly lowering one's expectations from Cruise to Cusack does suggest a degree of clear-headed logic -- the latter is way more realistically stalkable! The case goes to trial in September, and no doubt Jason Biggs is hoping the D.A. is a good one.

  • Exit Tom Cruise, Enter Christian Bale?

Christian Bale, living godMuch is afoot in the world of director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger). First, Variety announced earlier today that the prolific Australian would be directing Tom Cruise in the cold war spy thriller Edwin A. Salt, about a CIA officer suspected of working with those sneaky Reds. Now, Moviehole is reporting that Cruise is opting out of another planned collaboration with Noyce, the political thriller The 28th Ammendment. But don't weep for poor Philip. Word is that none other than The Dark Knight star Christian Bale might be stepping in to replace Cruise in the lead role, as a newly-elected American president who discovers the truth about who really runs the U.S. government (hint: it's the Freemasons).

Nothing's been confirmed, of course, but it appears that the wheels are indeed in motion to get Bale on board.

  • Will Smith a Scientologist? Hancock Being Delayed?

The web is abuzz with stories that Will Smith has been outed as a Scientologist. Sites across the web are reporting that Smith allegedly funded a Scientology school and that he and wife Jada Pinkett have been secret members of the Church of Scientology for years.

While we don't usually report rumor stories here at ReelzChannel.com, this one is interesting because of the ties it may have to the July 2nd release of Sony's tentpole Will Smith vehicle, Hancock. Reports initially surfaced that the movie was having problems and was going through reshoots. Now the June 10th World Premiere of Hancock in Sydney, Australia has been cancelled and some sites are even reporting that the movie will be pushed back from its July 2nd release date.

Although Sony is positioning the stories as merely the usual last minute issues finishing effects and the like, the recent reports of Smith's connection to the highly controversial Church of Scientology have many speculating that Sony is trying to avert the diasaster Paramount felt on 2006's Mission Impossible: III. During the promotional campaign for that movie, Tom Cruise's antics promoting the benefits of Scientology alienated many would-be moviegoers and seemed to signal the end for one of Hollywood's most reliable box office cash cows. It also effectively ended Cruise's long run with Paramount.

Since then, Will Smith has claimed the box office throne by a very wide margin. Is Smith destined for the same downfall as Cruise? Let's just hope he's not booked for an Oprah couch-jumping session any time soon...

  • Accident on Tom Cruise's Valkyrie set

    The curse of Valkyrie continues.

Eleven extras were injured yesterday on the Berlin set of the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie about the failed assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler during WWII.

Slats gave way on a truck carrying the extras--dressed as German soldiers--sending them tumbling into the street near the Potsdamer Platz. Ten were treated for minor injuries and one more seriously injured person spent the night in the hospital.

Neither Cruise nor director Bryan Singer were on set of the time fo the accident.

  • First Tom Cruise pix from Valkyrie released!

Cruise von StauffenbergDespite trouble getting things off the ground, it appears as though filming has begun on Valkyrie, Tom Cruise's movie about the 'July 20 Plot' to assassinate Adolf Hitler. In it, Cruise stars as Claus von Stauffenberg, the German army officer who planted a bomb inside Hitler's East Prussian headquarters.

Valkyrie, which is benig filmed on location in Germany, has been plagued by trouble from the get-go thanks to the country's vociferous opposition to the Church of Scientology, with which Cruise is strongly associated.

Most recently, the chief spokesman for the German Protestant Church referred to Cruise as "the Goebbels of Scientology," likening him to the infamous Nazi minister of propaganda, and referred to the Church of Scientology as a "totalitarian organization."

Still, principal photography commenced last week in Berlin and United Artists has released two photos of Cruise in uniform. Click on our Valkyrie page to check them out!

  • Germany gives Cruise mixed messages

The Fatherland is having a hard time figuring out exactly where it stands on Tom Cruise--specifically in terms of his new project, Valkyrie.

The movie, which will be written by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, and directed by Bryan Singer (Superman Returns), is about Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, a German man who was executed for staging a 1944 assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler. Cruise, who will play Stauffenberg, is struggling to shoot on location where the events really took place, Variety is reporting.

While German filmmakers are clearly happy to support a WWII movie that is able to paint their country in a positive light and to bring awareness of a man who is now considered a hero, Valkyrie has hit several snags.

As of June 25, the German Ministry of Defense announced Cruise et al. would not be allowed to shoot at military sights (namely the Bendlerblock building where Stauffenberg was executed) because of Cruise's outspoken relationship with the Church of Scientology, which is considered a "totalitarian cult" by the German government.

But three days later, the Ministry revised its statement, saying the problem was actually that part of its offices are located in the Bendlerblock, and the shooting would be disruptive. The Defense Ministry offered a filming permit if that problem could be solved.

Unfortunately for Cruise, the Finance Ministry overruled the decision on the grounds that that filming in the memorial Bendlerblock would disrespect and exploit its spirit as "a place of mourning."

The team's request to shoot at a Berlin police station was also denied. And Stauffenberg's son, Berthold von Stauffenberg, expressed his intense displeasure at the project by informing Cruise that he "should keep his hands off my father."

However, the news isn't all bad. As of July 5, The German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) announced it will be granting $6.5 million to support the project. That should come in handy if Cruise and the German government can ever agree on where to shoot.

Next Showing: Valkyrie is set to begin filming July 18. We'll see about that.
