  • Neve Campbell Back for Scream 4

Neve CampbellTwo months ago, David Arquette confirmed that he and wife Courtney Cox were returning for a fourth installment of the Scream franchise. There was doubt, however, as to whether Neve Campbell and Wes Craven would return. In all three previous movies, Campbell starred as the protagonist, Sidney, and Craven was behind the camera.

Well, now it appears that one of those two question marks is gone. Variety says that Campbell has agreed to return for Scream 4.

According to producer Bob Weinstein, Scream 4 will be the first in a new trilogy, although it was not specified whether the cast members had already agreed to return for the fifth and sixth installments. Production will begin sometime next spring. Weinstein also said that Scream is just one of the "revamp" projects he's at work on.

I'm going back to doing what I do best.... I'm heading back to my franchise films. These films are our strength, and we are committed to doing them in style.... There is no question that financing is readily available to produce and market these films.

Upcoming Weinstein productions include Spy Kids 4, Halloween III, and remakes of Children of the Corn, Short Circuit, and An American Werewolf in London. He also mentioned he is taking a greater interest in 3-D releases.

  • David Arquette Confirms Role in Scream 4 with Courtney Cox

In an interview with Marc Malkin of E! Online, David Arquette confirmed that he and his wife Courtney Cox have signed on for a fourth installment of the Scream franchise.

We are going to be doing Scream 4. Kevin Williamson is writing the script at this moment, and hopefully Wes Craven is going to direct ... Kevin has sort of put out the broad strokes, but I don't think I'm at liberty to share any of that.

The franchise began in 1996 with Scream. Neve Campbell starred as Sidney, a suburban teenager hunted by a serial killer who takes cues from horror movies. Arquette played Dewey, a hapless local cop who falls in love with Cox's character, the opportunistic reporter Gale Weathers.

Two sequels followed over the next four years. Craven directed all three installments, while Williamson wrote the scripts for Scream and Scream 2 before deciding not to return for the third movie.

Campbell has decided against playing Sidney a fourth time, but Arquette said he hopes she reconsiders. He also talked about his enthusiasm for the project:

I fell in love with my wife on Scream, so the opportunity to bring [Dewey] back to life and for my wife to play that really bitchy character again, it's just going to be really fun. It's just great.

  • Will Wes Craven Return for Scream 4?

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

Last weekend at Comic-Con, Kickin' It Old Skool star Jamie Kennedy stressed to anyone who'd listen that a new Scream sequel is in the works. At first we were inclined to dismiss it as wishful thinking on the part of Kennedy, who starred in the last episode of blockbuster horror franchise, Scream 3, way back in 2000. So later on we sought out a more credible source to Scream star Neve Campbell, back when she was relevantcheck the veracity of Kennedy's Scream 4 claims: Wes Craven, director of the first three Scream flicks.

"I've heard that (Scream producer) Bob Weinstein is thinking about it, and I think he has asked around my agency whether I'd be interested," said Craven, who was at the Con to promote his new movie 25/8. "Right now I don't think anything's official but I have heard that he's thinking about it seriously for the first time."

Roughly translated from vague Hollywood industry jargon, Craven's comments most likely mean that he's in negotiations to direct Scream 4 but is prohibited from talking about it until the contract is signed.
