  • Resident Evil 4 Adds Cast Members and Starts Production

Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil ExtinctionSony Screen Gems has announced that production has officially begun on Resident Evil: Afterlife in Toronto, Canada.

Some casting announcements for the fourth installment of the Resident Evil series were made as well. Boris Kodjoe already Tweeted his involvement in the movie, then revealed the casting of Prison Break's Wentworth Miller as well. Afterlife's press release reveals that Miller will be playing game character Chris Redfield, the brother of Ali Larter's Claire, who first arrived in Resident Evil: Extinction. Spencer Locke will return as Extinction's other survivor, K-Mart, and Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) is cast in an unspecified role.

In a surprising re-casting, Shawn Roberts (Diary of the Dead) will take over for Jason O'Mara as the evil Dr. Albert Wexler. Also of note, IMDb's cast list includes some curious casting rumors with Jensen Ackles playing game character Leon S. Kennedy and Eva Mendes playing a character named Excella Gionne. IMDb still lists O'Mara in the cast, so perhaps those rumors are just that.

Afterlife sees the return of Paul W.S. Anderson to the director's chair, after only writing and producing the previous two sequels Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Extinction. In a statement, Anderson had this to say about Afterlife:

Alice's battle with The Umbrella Corporation isn't finished. Last time we saw Alice [Milla Jovovich], she let them know she was coming after them. It's time to settle the score.

Afterlife is being shot in 3-D and opens August 27, 2010.

  • Green Lantern, Sucker Punch Get New Release Dates

Warner Bros. has decided to delay two upcoming movies, moving possible superhero franchise Green Lantern to June 17, 2011, while Zack Snyder's Watchmen follow-up, Sucker Punch, has been moved from October 2010 to March 25, 2011. The change for Sucker Punch may have come from the recent cast changes, but Green Lantern is now poised to compete with Marvel's big summer, opening a month after Thor and Spider-Man 4, but a month before First Avenger: Captain America.

Clearly, Warner Bros. is feeling confident about Green Lantern, and perhaps they wanted to give director Martin Campbell more time to cast the lead role. With rumors of Bradley Cooper surfacing, Latino Review reports that Shawn Roberts has "auditioned several times" for the part. Roberts just wrapped Campbell's Edge of Darkness, but it may be long-rumored choice Sam Worthington, who has not only Terminator Salvation and Avatar opening this year, but Clash of the Titans in 2010, that Campbell may be holding out for. Worthington told Moviehole:

I've been talking to Martin Campbell about [Green Lantern]. It's one of those things where they're still doing the script. I said, "Give me a script. Let me have a look at it." I like Martin a lot. I met him on the Bond stuff, and I like his work, but the second step is, "Is it a movie that I'd go and see?"

Moving Green Lantern to 2011 sure gives Worthington some time to think about it.
