  • XXX 3 Lands a Director
    XXX

The third installment in the XXX opus is on its way, and Columbia Pictures has hired Ericson Core to direct it. Titled XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, relative newcomer Core (Invincible) will need to be approved by Vin Diesel, though Core and Diesel have worked together previously on The Fast And the Furious where Core acted as cinematographer.

XXX director Rob Cohen was originally supposed to reunite with Diesel. When Cohen backed out to direct Medieval, he called the decision to leave "tough" and hoped the production would wait for him. Apparently, it hasn't.

The script for The Return of Xander Cage was written by Terminator Salvation writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris, and will follow Cage's return to the National Security Agency after an absence of eight years.

  • Another Riddick Movie a Matter of Rating

Chronicles of RiddickDespite the critical drubbing of Chronicles of Riddick, neither star Vin Diesel nor writer/director David Twohy have given up on making another Riddick movie. Diesel used his Facebook page to announce some news about the next installment of Riddick:

The Riddick discussion is about rating now .... Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings, the next chapter in the COR series was always envisioned as an R rating, like Pitch Black ....

One Studio exec suggested doing both The Underverse and The Furyan, (working titles) at the same time, allowing us an R rating for the first and a PG rating for the second.

The good news- David Twohy's script comes in next month.

Diesel has said that he and Twohy planned for Chronicles to be the start of a trilogy, one that would take place sequentially before Pitch Black, and that he and Twohy could make the next two Riddick movie simultaneously, though his Facebook update suggests they would only do this if they can get their R-rating. Twohy gave more details about the next Riddick to ShockTilYouDrop, including an explanation of what went wrong in Chronicles of Riddick :

I've sketched out two ideas for the next installment. Vin and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there's some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with Riddick that we shouldn't have made. We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that Pitch Black was, and we'll spend less money doing it.

The Riddick character continues to spawn successful video games (with Diesel providing the voice), but Twohy basically concedes that to continue making Riddick movies means borrowing from Pitch Black in more ways than just focus:

The third movie would be more modestly-scaled and it would probably feel more like Pitch Black then Chronicles. It will always be Riddick-centric. If the question is whether it will be more like the first one than the second one, the difference is that yeah, you can sell it on its creatures and say "This is a creature fest and we're going to go out as us vs. the creatures," but that's like a lot of different movies. However, the hallmark of a good movie, and I think Pitch Black is a good movie, is that even if you took the creatures out of the picture, you'd still have some pretty interesting character dynamics going on within that group, and it's almost like you can tell the same story without the creature or substitute some other external pressure on the group, because there were internal pressures as well that were interesting.

More details will probably arrive when the Twohy script is handed over next month. Do you think another Riddick movie should be made? Share a comment with us!

  • Rob Cohen Leaves XXX 3 for Medieval

XXXRob Cohen has decided not to reunite with Vin Diesel. The director and star were both set to return for XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, when Cohen jumped at the chance to direct Medieval, a movie that Cohen describes as "The Magnificent Seven in the Middle Ages."

Cohen and Diesel had also worked together on The Fast and the Furious and were supposed to reunite for XXX: State of the Union. However, both left that project. Cohen wasn't happy about leaving the third XXX either:

It was a tough decision about XXX. I talked to Vin over the weekend and said I hoped they would wait, but that if they find another director who's right for the sequel, I certainly wouldn't be angry. But I could not let something like this go.

Medieval looks to bring warriors together from disparate cultures and was written by Alex Litvak (Predators) and Michael Finch. McG will produce.

  • Super Bowl Trailer Fast and Furious Wrap-up!

Super Bowl 43Wow, what a game! The Cardinals came back and took the lead 23-20 with only 2 mins 30 on the clock. Riveting last minute play got the ball back in the hands of the Steelers who took it down to the 7 and with only 43 seconds left, they made a TD and extra point to take the lead back 27-23. Now that Arizona has the ball back they have 22 seconds to get down the field.

What's left of the trailers you ask? They've kinda petered out as the game has come to a close, but be sure and scroll down to see all the ones we've blogged about: G.I. Joe, Transformers, Angels & Demons, Land of the Lost, Star Trek, Monsters vs. Aliens, Up, The Year One and Race to Witch Mountain.

    15 Seconds left...

But there is another one that aired earlier that I skipped over simply because it has been shown before -- on TV prior to the game. Still its fairly new, so I'll end with it. It's the next Fast and Furious franchise film and you can see the newest trailer below.

And... The Cardinals couldn't pull it out in time. Steelers win 27-23. Game over. Now go see a movie.

  • Fast & Furious' New Model: Sexy Beanpole Gal Gadot

Gal GadotIn the world of high-stakes street racing, timing is everything. And so far, we'd have to say the timing of Fast & Furious is a little off. As we already noted yesterday, there's an awful lot of running in the new trailer. Obviously, the movie was filmed when gas was four bucks a gallon, and with Vin Diesel no longer the surefire box office draw he once was, well, you gotta economize, right? So, more foot chases, fewer car chases. Of course, gas prices have since calmed a bit, and had the franchise's fourth installment been ready to roll a month ago, when gas was gloriously cheap, audiences would have no doubt flocked to theaters to celebrate the return of rival petro-holics Dom Toretto and Brian O'Conner.

Unfortunately, the movie's editors weren't working fast and furious enough, and now that gas is topping two bucks a gallon again, mindless fuel consumption no longer seems so sexy. Luckily, the movie has one alternative energy source working in its favor: Maxim cover model and former fitness instructor in the Israeli Defense Forces, Gal Gadot. At a reported 94 lbs., the 5' 11" beauty may not pack the obvious wallop of, say, her more sturdily built Fast & Furious co-star Michelle Rodriguez. But if you like your Hollywood bombshells as slim and tapered as a Tomahawk warhead, Gadot may qualify as your new dream gal. We can't say for certain though, because even after multiple viewings of the new new trailer, we're not sure if she appears in it or not. Maybe she's just standing sideways.

  • Fast & Furious Poster Revealed

Hard to believe it's been almost eight years since Vin Diesel and Paul Walker sped into the hearts of audiences all over the world, but they're back to remind everyone of the magic and MTV has the exclusive poster to the fourth installment.

Noticeably absent is Lucas Black, star of The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, and for those confused, worry not: Fast & Furious takes place before Tokyo Drift and after 2 Fast 2 Furious, so all the intricate plot lines from Tokyo Drift won't get in the way of Fast & Furious which sees Diesel and Walker joining forces to bring down a common enemy.

  • Babylon A.D. Trailer Unveiled; Is Vin Diesel Back?

Can't believe I passed on the XXX sequelIt wasn't long ago that Vin Diesel was being touted as the Next Great Action Hero. Then came The Chronicles of Riddick, and suddenly the one-time heir to the Schwarzenegger throne couldn't get arrested.

IGN Movies today debuted the first full-length trailer for Diesel's latest flick, Babylon A.D., and if the movie delivers on the promise of the explosive two-minute clip, the Pacifier star may very well be poised for a comeback. Based upon the novel Babylon Babies by French sci-fi author Maurice Dantec, Babylon A.D. looks like sort of a futuristic version of The Transporter, if the Jason Statham character also had to fend off the apocalypse. Works for me.

Check out the Babylon A.D. trailer in all its HD glory over at IGN Movies.

  • Babylon A.D. Being Trimmed?

Reports of major trims to the final cut of the Vin Diesel Movie Babylon A.D. have been widespread of late. The original cut of the movie was apparently more epic in nature coming in around 160 minutes. The new final theatrical cut has been trimmed some 70 minutes to bring it down to a more short attention span-friendly 90 minutes.

For Diesel, this must feel a bit like deja vu after similar cuts greatly altered the Pitch Black sequel Chronicles of Riddick. Let's hope this one receives a warmer reception at the box office.

Babylon A.D. is based on George Dantec's sci-fi novel Babylon Babies. It will be released August 29, 2008.

  • Will Vin Diesel be the next Terminator?

The Pacifier, Vin Diesel's finest hourLike the unstoppable killing machines featured in its films, the Terminator franchise simply refuses to die. If CHUD and Ain't It Cool News are to believed, a fourth chapter in the venerable Sci-fi series is in the works, with McG directing and Vin Diesel possibly starring.

It's the role Diesel was born to play: stilted, robotic movements, little dialogue, lots of flexing. I must say, however, that I'm a little disappointed with Skynet. After the T-100 made its impressive debut, the Terminator product line really went downhill. The liquid metal T-1000 was a flashy bust, and while the T-X was certainly easy on the eyes, its performance in the field was a tad underwhelming. Will the Vin Diesel model halt this disappointing trend? I'm not optimistic, but I'll reserve judgment until I see Terminator 4.

Diesel seems to be emulating the career path of fellow tough guy Arnold Schwarzenegger, albeit in sort of a second-rate, b-list fashion. First there was the Kindergarten Cop re-hash The Pacifier, and now we have this Terminator re-hash. What's next, a run for West Hollywood City Council?
