  • Roland Emmerich Teases a Two-Part Sequel to Independence Day

Independence Day 2Talking to MTV, 2012 director Roland Emmerich offered up a few more tantalizing tidbits about his concept for a sequel to his 1996 vision of the end the world, Independence Day. Whether it will actually ever be produced still seems to hinge on whether he can get Will Smith on board, but if it does, the master of disaster is, as usual, thinking big:

What we want to do in the next – it's actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc.

As for the plot, he explains, there is no script yet, but:

The idea is just to continue the story and actually I don't know how many years ago this was — twelve, thirteen, fourteen years ago — and just continue where it ended ... the story will stay firmly on the planet. It's always about earth and that earth gets invaded.

He's even toyed around with a title for the project: ID4-ever parts I and II.

  • Will Smith and Spielberg Remake of Oldboy Gets the Axe

Steven Spielberg remaking Korean horror movie OldboySeriously, can you think of anything thing that sounds worse than Steven Spielberg (one of the most iconic-yet-conventional directors in history) crafting a movie based loosely on the edgy, stomach-churning Korean horror movie Oldboy? Oh yeah ... how about remaking it with Will Smith (one of the most-iconic-yet-conventional actors in recent years) as the star?

The 2003 Chan-wook Park-directed Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and became something of an instant cult classic among connoisseurs of exotic horror and Asian cinema. The story involves a man imprisoned in a room for 15 years under mysterious circumstances. When he finally emerges, he sets about trying to find the identity of his captor.

For some reason, Smith and Spielberg decided it would be a great idea to remake the movie for American audiences, with Smith as the star. Admittedly, they planned to base their version on the original manga rather than on Park's movie; but regardless, it's hard to imagine a director as tame as Spielberg and an actor as mass-friendly as Smith pulling off the story and the character with the necessary edginess.

Thankfully, Latino Review writes that the cinema gods have performed a miracle: Mandate and Dreamworks apparently couldn't reach a consensus regarding the rights to the manga, and the project is now officially kaput. We can only hope that Smith and Spielberg don't try to revive it.

If you haven't seen Oldboy, there are some truly spine-tingling moments involving, among other things, a live octopus and a scene of "denistry" that makes Dustin Hoffman's Marathon Man horror moment seem downright tame. And of course, there's the now-famous hall-fight sequence, which you can see below.

  • Risk the Next Board Game To Hit the Big Screen

Will SmithDirector Peter Berg is adapting Battleship for Universal, the Tron Legacy writers are working on a Ouija Board screenplay for Platinum Dunes and Paramount, so is it any wonder that Sony Pictures wants to make a movie based on the board game Risk? While former players of the game might question how it could be adapted into a movie, Columbia president Doug Belgrad told Variety that the game is a natural fit for the big screen treatment.

The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.

Risk will be produced by actor Will Smith and producer James Lassitter's Overbrook production company. Could Smith be willing to accept an acting role in the adaptation? Well, he does have a history of success with movies that deal with powerful entities vying for total world domination...

  • Roland Emmerich Eyes Independence Day 2

Independence DayHe may end the world with the 2012 apocalypse, but Roland Emmerich sure seems to have a lot of ideas for what he might be doing afterwards. Just the other day, he was talking up his ideas for filming Isaac Asimov's sci-fi classic Foundation, not to mention the who-really-wrote-Shakespeare's-plays mystery he still has in the the works. Now, despite a pledge to stop destroying the world, he's mentioning the possibility of a sequel to the most successful of his disaster flicks, Independence Day.

The real question, though, is why the studio didn't greenlight a follow-up right after the 1996 original scored such a serious hit at the box office. After all, it's not as if the studios are actually shy about making sequels. Emmerich told the Latino Review he has the idea for a follow up, but the sticking point, apparently the whole time, has been Will Smith:

Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel, likely because we've found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean's and my deal, and Will's [Smith] deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it's just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says, "Why don't you do it without Will Smith?" I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience, too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting.

He goes on to emphasize that they already have a "really good great story, a very cool one" thought up, if only the financial end of things could be worked out.

  • Will Smith and Charlize Theron to Return in Hancock 2 - Plus a Third "All-Powerful" Actor

Hancock"Everybody's going to come back for a sequel," said director Peter Berg in an interview with MTV about Hancock 2. Berg's confirmation validates what Charlize Theron said last September when she said she'd happily return to "ride the Will Smith train" if the rest of the key players returned too.

Both Smith and Theron's characters were revealed at the end of Hancock to be immortal gods who become vulnerable when near each other for any length of time. For the sequel, Berg said we can expect the appearance of at least one more all-powerful god. What's more, he's got his eye on a well-known actor to play the third superhero.

We have someone in mind. I'm not gonna tell you who, but we have!"

Given that Will and Charlize are about as big as stars come, this means that he's clearly got another A-lister in mind for the movie. What a tease!

  • Hancock Sequel on Way; Writers Hired

HancockWhen a movie makes $624 million dollars, as Hancock did, a sequel is guaranteed. Hancock 2 is taking shape, starting with the hiring of screenwriters Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara. Both writers worked previously on FX's The Shield.

Plot details are being kept secret, but director Peter Berg, who will return for the sequel, gave some spoilers to SciFiWire. In Hancock, Will Smith is an immortal god whose invulnerability disappears when in the presence of his immortal goddess, Charlize Theron. Berg expects the sequel to introduce more immortals.

There might be another god out there. Might be another one.

Hancock took 12 years to make it to the big screen. Berg says the sequel will arrive faster, but won't be rushed.

They like to fast-track it, but Will's busy, I'm pretty busy. We're excited to do one, but we want the script to be right and the movie to be right. We don't feel a burning imperative to go right back into it.

In other words: Get it "right," Fierro and Mazzara, or more writers will be hired.

  • McG Talks About Updating 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20,000 Leagues Under the SeaMcG recently announced that he will be making Terminator 5, but before he does, he'll finish his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. McG's been working hard on the remake of Disney's first live-action movie — scouting locations all over the world has to be exhausting. Recently, he described the changes he has in store, which includes being more politically correct than the 1954 original.

It's a bit of a departure from the [Richard] Fleischer movie, and much more in keeping with the spirit of the novel, as far as what Aronnax is up to, and the becoming of Nemo, and how the man became at war with war itself. So there's a little bit more meat on the bone in regard to the genesis of the Nemo character than you're given in the '50s movie that Disney made. And also, it's a little more contemporary, because in that movie, there were... You know, I love that movie, but there were two female characters, they were both prostitutes. And there were a couple of black people in the film, and they were all electrocuted. So nowadays, I think we need to progress a little bit beyond that.

One way of showing that "progress" is casting Will Smith as Nemo, something McG was trying to accomplish in January, though now he claims he's hoping to cast Sam Worthington in the role. Whoever does get cast as Nemo will have to prepare himself for a workout.

It will be a great deal of action, because I mean, let's face it, the guy is an adventurer. And I think that's the intention of [Leagues author Jules] Verne. The idea is getting up and then going around the world, living under sea, doing what no one does. And it's the spirit of the adventure that I want to capture.

There's no release date yet for Leagues but production is supposed to begin this year.

  • Michael Bay Calls Megan Fox Comments "Ridiculous"

Michael BaySome people just can't catch a break. Take director Michael Bay, for instance. The oft-criticized director is hot off of a blockbuster opening, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, that saw the movie earn an estimated $201 million in its first five days, and he's already having to defend himself from another attack. This time, it's one of his "discoveries," actress Megan Fox, who played Mikaela Banes, love interest to Shia LaBeouf's Transformers character, Sam Witwicky, who is lobbing the criticism at Bay.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fox complained about Bay making the actors go through unnecessary training and said that Transformers was about special effects and not acting. When asked to comment on Fox's statements, Bay said:

Well, that's Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she's 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do. You roll your eyes when you see statements like that and think, "Okay Megan, you can do whatever you want. I got it." But I 100% disagree with her.... Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in Transformers.

Bay also mentioned that his films helped the careers of Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Martin Lawrence and LaBeouf. Despite defending his use of special effects, however, Bay said that he's looking to switch gears with his next project:

I've been talking to some big actors right now about something that is totally different. A small dark comedy, a true story, with actors just acting, no effects. I'm done with effects movies for now.

  • Channing Tatum Wants to Play Captain America

Channing TatumG.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra star Channing Tatum is really into playing the lead role in First Avenger: Captain America and the follow-up The Avengers. Tatum told MTV:

I would love to play Captain America. I actually really, really would love it. I love Captain America. I'm not a big aficionado on him. But I know who we was, and I like him as a character.

Whether Tatum is up for the role is not known, but it's notable that he still believes the long-overturned rumor that Will Smith is playing the role:

I'd absolutely be next in line [after Smith], as long as people wouldn't hate that I'd do G.I. Joe and Captain America and be like "Okay, you need to do something different than a soldier." I don't want to be that guy that everybody's like "We've seen you do that sort of thing."

With few names mentioned for the Captain America role at this point (Matthew McConaughey is a potential "maybe" for the part), Tatum could very well be a contender, much like his character in Fighting. Or, wait, is that too much of the same thing?

  • Denzel Washington Is America's Favorite Movie Star

Denzel WashingtonWe are not joking. You may, however, be scratching your head, trying to remember the last Denzel Washington movie you saw. Us too. And yet according to The Harris Poll, an online survey of 2,388 U.S. adults conducted in December 2008, Denzel Washington is our favorite movie star. For the third year in a row! Conclusion: Someone must actually be watching The Bone Collector, which seems to be playing on cable every time we turn on the TV. Certainly Washington didn't achieve favorite status at the multiplex. Out of the nearly 40 movies he's appeared in, only three have topped $100 million at the box office. And only one has topped $130. Even in a bad year, Will Smith does better than that.

  • Who is the Fastest Hollywood Celebrity?

William BaldwinWill Smith may have won 2008's box-office race -- at least according to those movie theater owners voting in the annual Quigley Poll. But who is Hollywood's fastest celebrity when it comes to running marathons? We wouldn't have guessed pudgy Will Ferrell, who according to this this Examiner.com story, is pretty near the top of crop, running the 2003 Boston Marathon in 3:56:12. As impressive as that is, Anthony Edwards, who has the stringy, authentically haggard-looking appearance of a hardcore distance runner, has him beat, with a 3:55:40 showing in the 2003 Chicago Marathon. Faster still, at least nineteen years ago, is William Baldwin, who turned in a 3:24:29 performance at the 1992 New York Marathon.

The slowest? Freddie Prinze Jr.'s 5:50:49 in the 2006 L.A. Marathon.

  • Peter Bart Issues Memos to Will Smith, Baz Lurhmann

Will SmithAs we near the end of 2008, Variety's Peter Bart has issued a memo to Will Smith in which he offer's the rather obvious observation that Seven Pounds "doesn't really work" and cautions the actor's reliance in Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers: The Story of Success. "Your career provides testimony to my point theory that 'innate talent' wins the day, but you're beginning to negate that talent by trying to goddamned hard," Bart tells Smith in the memo.

The memo follows a similar tirade to Baz Lurhmann regarding the director's announced plans to remake The Great Gatsby. "My advice (unsolicited) on Gatsby can be summed up in two words: Think again," Bart says to Lurhmann, adding that Fitzgerald's classic work "doesn't translate to screeen" and can be "an expensive trap."

  • Stars Buzzing About New Hollywood 'It' Book

OutliersThe book is called Outliers: The Story of Success, and in it, best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell outlines his theory that it takes 10,000 hours to master whatever in life you are trying to master. The LA Times reports that it has caught Hollywood's fancy, with everyone from Will Smith to Dustin Hoffman to Revolutionary Road director Sam Mendes dropping references to it at recent parties and events. In a town where some people become A-list stars based on the fetching plumpness of their lips and others spend twenty years in acting class pretending to be an angry eggplant and yet never even land a deodorant commercial, the book is a natural conversation starter. And, of course, the implications for reality TV are frightening -- does anyone really want to watch a 10,000-episode season of Dancing With the Stars?

  • Baiting for Oscars

Seven PoundsThe Oscar statuette is the pinnacle of one’s career in Hollywood. Win one of these hallowed golden naked men - standing perfectly erect, arms folded, head high – and a star is once and forever smiled upon by the movie Gods throughout eternity.

So it might come as a surprise that the path to Oscar glory isn’t always that hard to figure out. The Academy certainly has its perennial favorite themes. While they occasionally throw viewers for a loop by making the less expected choice (American Beauty, No Country for Old Men), they have picked the predicted winner more times than not.

Baiting for Oscars has evolved into an art form in Hollywood. Actors will gladly take a pay cut in order to throw their hat into the award season competitions. With such acclaim comes a feeling of accomplishment and, in most cases, career success for years to come. Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way. Just ask Cuba Gooding Jr. or Mira Sorvino.

The 2008 Oscar season is already in full swing, with a few shameless Oscar bids hitting theaters this month. Yes, I’m talking to you, Will Smith and Tom Cruise. As such, we thought the timing was appropriate to take a look at Oscar baiting over the years, both the successes and the failures. Check out our Oscar Baiting Guide for more.

  • Will Smith Is Not Lacking for Ambition

Our next President? The election season may be over, but that hasn't stopped Will Smith from making a lot of bold promises. While out on the campaign trail this week to promote his upcoming Oscar-baiting drama Seven Pounds, Hollywood's top-earning actor set forth quite an ambitious agenda. Over the past few days, he:

    Assured Collider that he has a "fantastic idea" for an I Am Legend prequel, involving the fall of Manhattan;

    Promised JoBlo that we will "definitely" see a Hancock sequel in "a few years";

Hinted to Movieweb at the possibility of playing Barack Obama in a biopic, boasting that his ears make him a "lock" for the role; and

Bragged to Barbara Walters that there was "no question" he himself could get elected president, if he wanted to.

Next week, Smith reportedly plans to present his Comprehensive Unified Field Theory to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, at last bridging the gap between quantum physics and Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

  • I Am Legend, Again?

Will SmithWhen it comes to blockbuster tentpole flicks, Hollywood's modus operandi is to greenlight sequels almost immediately after the first receipts come in. But what happens when the highly-recognizable, virtually indispensable hero of said blockbuster eats it at the end of the movie? Such is the dilemma facing the producers of last year's unexpected megahit, I Am Legend. In an uncharacteristically brave move, they opted to kill off star Will Smith, a guy who just happens to be the most popular actor on the planet, in spectacular -- and thoroughly conclusive -- fashion at the end of Francis Lawrence's post-apocalyptic epic. (We'd put a "Spoiler Alert" here, but if you're one of the seven people in the country who hasn't seen I Am Legend, chances are you probably don't have internet access, either.)

Initial reports indicated that Warner Bros. intended to make an I Am Legend prequel -- seemingly the only realistic option available that would allow the studio to continue milking the franchise and not appear utterly shameless -- but now AICN is reporting (via an untested source, they caution) that they've changed course and that a sequel is indeed in the works.

If AICN's report is true, I Am Legend sequel producers have three explanations for bringing Smith back, according to standard Hollywood procedure: 1) Explain that it was all just one big, crazy dream; 2) Reveal that Smith's character, Robert Neville, has a previously unmentioned twin or clone; or 3) Have Smith only appear in flashbacks, Saw-style. Either way, we smell a hit.

What do you think the sequel should be called? Our suggestion: Live Free or I Am Legend.

  • What Does It Take To Be Influential in Hollywood?

Forbes, which we like to think of as the Seventeen of financial magazines because of its incessant list-making, has another list: Hollywood's Influential Actors. To determine the top 10, Forbes relied on data gathered by E-Poll Market Research, a Los Angeles company that gathers information on 4500 celebrities. Apparently, 40% of those polled believe Denzel Julie RobertsWashington is "influential," and that's good enough for the top of the list. The others, in declining order of influence, include Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, and "Julie" Roberts. Which just goes to show you, Hollywood stars don't have nearly as much influence as they're typically given credit for -- Roberts hasn't even been able to influence the creators of this list to get her first name right.

Meanwhile, where are the outspoken Hollywood stars who genuinely make an effort to influence people -- Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Leo DeCaprio, Kelsey Grammer, Arnold Schwarzenegger? The best way to be influential in Hollywood, it seems, is to make mainstream movies that do well at the box office for a couple decades or so, project a vague sense of progressive gravitas at award shows without being overtly political, don't be a woman, and most especially of all, don't be a comedian!

  • Will Smith Offered Captain America Role?

Will Smith: Captain America? In a testament to the state of modern journalism, MTV's Splash Page is reporting what may very well be the biggest movie news in months -- or merely an unsubstantiated rumor. Addressing the state of the film industry during an interview to promote his new movie Miracle at St. Anna, star Derek Luke remarked offhandedly, "I heard they offered Will Smith Captain America.” Cue the discussion board floodgates.

If true, the bombshell does present a bold and potentially brilliant casting coup, and seeing the country's biggest action star play its definitive patriotic superhero would certainly be an enticing proposition. But is the I Am Legend star really down for the Captain America gig? After seeing colleagues Robert Downey Jr. and Christian Bale draw raves for playing comic book characters, he may very well want in on the fanboy action. Then again, he could still be smarting from all the negative reviews his recent dysfunctional superhero flick, Hancock, received from critics.

We'll be sure to update you as this one unfolds.

  • Will Smith a Scientologist? Hancock Being Delayed?

The web is abuzz with stories that Will Smith has been outed as a Scientologist. Sites across the web are reporting that Smith allegedly funded a Scientology school and that he and wife Jada Pinkett have been secret members of the Church of Scientology for years.

While we don't usually report rumor stories here at ReelzChannel.com, this one is interesting because of the ties it may have to the July 2nd release of Sony's tentpole Will Smith vehicle, Hancock. Reports initially surfaced that the movie was having problems and was going through reshoots. Now the June 10th World Premiere of Hancock in Sydney, Australia has been cancelled and some sites are even reporting that the movie will be pushed back from its July 2nd release date.

Although Sony is positioning the stories as merely the usual last minute issues finishing effects and the like, the recent reports of Smith's connection to the highly controversial Church of Scientology have many speculating that Sony is trying to avert the diasaster Paramount felt on 2006's Mission Impossible: III. During the promotional campaign for that movie, Tom Cruise's antics promoting the benefits of Scientology alienated many would-be moviegoers and seemed to signal the end for one of Hollywood's most reliable box office cash cows. It also effectively ended Cruise's long run with Paramount.

Since then, Will Smith has claimed the box office throne by a very wide margin. Is Smith destined for the same downfall as Cruise? Let's just hope he's not booked for an Oprah couch-jumping session any time soon...
