  • Thor Update: Casting, Set Report, and Stan Lee's Cameo

Idris ElbaThor, which starts production in mid-January, seems to be on the fast track to complete its casting. Earlier this week, director Kenneth Branagh and Marvel cast the Warriors Three, and today, THR reports that Idris Elba has joined the cast as Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard.

Stan LeeWhile the cast is coming together, the cameo role for Stan Lee isn't. Lee Told MTV that he has met with Branagh, but a cameo role has not been chosen yet.

I had lunch with Branagh, [who's] the nicest guy in the world as well as the most talented. Months ago, when he was first starting on the movie, he said he would get a cameo for me. When we had lunch, I was sure he had asked me to lunch because he wanted me to play Odin, [Thor's father, a role Anthony Hopkins will be playing] but it was a big disappointment. I figure I'll end up carrying his spear.

Once Lee does get his cameo lined up, he'll get to visit the set like Marvel comics writer Brian Michael Bendis did. He used his Twitter account to tell fans about his on set experience.

Broadcasting live from marvel west. Thor movie meeting with Ken branagh was over the top amazing. Visited the sets! I was in Odin's chamber!

  • Obsessed Reviews, If You Can't Say Something Nice...

ObsessedWe've been searching around for reviews of the new Beyonce Knowles movie Obsessed and let's just say, we've had an easier time finding a parking place at the mall on Black Friday. It took a bit of driving around the Internet, but we managed to find a few reviews from online bloggers:

    BDKReviews.com writes:

Obsessed is your typical stalker thriller but is horrifically written and terribly overacted. Beyonce Knowles' performance is completely laughable and Idris Elba needs to look back over his resume and do more of the good flicks and T.V. shows; i.e. American Gangster, "The Office" and "The Wire."

    From TheMovieBoy.com:

There is no excuse for a dumb thriller when the people behind it prove capable enough to make an intelligent one.

    Metromix.com gives us this gem:

A subpar thriller that falls into the classic B-movie trap of too much mundane dialogue, too little pulse-quickening action. The climax arrives in the form of a glorious girl-on-girl smack down that will someday make a fine clip on YouTube. Until then, do what the actors should've done: hold out for something better.

    And from BrianOrndorf.com:

What better way to show some imposing box office muscle than to headline a trashy, empty calorie thriller that plays with racial bugaboos and DTV slasher conventions for a cheap, conversation-with-the-screen response. Oh my, this picture is junk food, but worse, it's an absolute toothless bore.

Sony never screened the movie for the press. Given these reviews, they were wise to just let the movie rest on Beyonce's name and fan base.

  • Idris Elba's Hoop Dreams

Idris ElbaWhat are the chances of circumspect superstar Michael Jordan agreeing to a biopic that's mostly about his life off the court, as an international brand icon? About as good as, say, a porpoise hitting a half-court shot at the United Center. But if The Wire's Idris Elba can actually pull this off someday, we definitely want front-row seats.
