  • Leonardo DiCaprio Says Inception Makes No Sense

InceptionLeonardo DiCaprio's upcoming thriller Shutter Island looks like a strange movie, but even DiCaprio knows that when it comes to puzzling flicks, Inception beats all. Neither trailer so far has been able to shed light on director Christopher Nolan's "architecture of the mind" movie. In an interview with Inquirer, DiCaprio admitted that the movie's complex storyline was confusing even to the cast and crew.

I don't know what I'm allowed to say about Inception. I don't even know what I'm allowed to say about Shutter Island, to be quite honest. Both Chris and Martin [Scorses, director of Shutter Island] are great directors. The material and its complexity are what I'm attracted to. I'm not happy if I don't have a lot to do. I've been lucky to work with people who want to tell stories that hit on different cylinders simultaneously. Shutter Island is definitely that. Inception is the same. It is Chris delving into dream psychoanalysis and, at the same time, making a high-octane, surreal film that came from his mind. He wrote the entire thing, and it all made sense to him. It didn't make sense to many of us when we were doing it. We had to do a lot of detective work (laughing) to figure out what the movie was about.

At least the cast isn't a mystery. DiCaprio plays Jacob, while Marion Cotillard plays his wife. Ellen Page plays Ariadne, a grad student and DiCaprio's sidekick, Michael Caine plays a science professor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays DiCaprio's associate, and Ken Watanabe plays Saito, the villain of the movie.

Inception opens July 16, while Shutter Island releases February 19.

  • Ben Kingsley Finds Surprising Tenderness Amid Shutter Island's Terrors

Shutter IslandAt a group press conference promoting Shutter Island, Ben Kingsley noted something unexpected emerged during the making of the movie — affection.

It's not the sort of description you would expect based on the movie's trailer, or even more from the Superbowl spot. In those previews, the nightmarish suspense surrounding a woman's disappearance from a, frankly gothic, asylum overwhelms everything else. But, Kingsley insists, there is more here than meets the eye.

And what you perhaps don't see on the page, and even when we were reading it together in the hotel room, Leo [DiCaprio] and I and Mark [Ruffalo], what did emerge was an extraordinary level of tenderness between the characters that actually even though it's — as Leo pointed out — it looks, if you see the trailer, like a thriller — the glue that holds it together is varying levels of tenderness, uh, for your wife, for your child, for your patient, for your friend. Uh, and that is an ingredient that you can't rehearse, you can't anticipate, is always surprising, and can only be brought to film by the director. So our great journey was making something out of nothing, and on the way discovering, tenderness.

Director Martin Scorsese concurs, suggesting that this is the case even for the doctors, who don't exactly come off that way in the trailer, to say the least.

I guess — I think one of the key elements here is that if you care about the person, and I think what Sir Ben said is really right in the sense that one of the things that I was so surprised about to discover ultimately — I knew it but I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't verbalize it — is the love or the caring, the tenderness that he has for the patients. And they all do. And the relationship between the patient and the doctor. And at times stern, at times you don't know what he's thinking, where he's going — why he's saying certain things, why he's behaving a certain way. Is he really telling the truth or not. You don't know. But ultimately underlying all of this is this very strong relationship of believing in this therapy…

None of this is, of course, to deny that the movie is in fact the thriller it has been billed as. There is clearly a hidden, and likely malign, agenda at work on the island that is driving investigators into some pretty strange territory on the border of drug-induced madness. But, taking Kingsley at his word, there is something else to look for in it as well.

  • Super Bowl Spot and Behind-the-Scenes Footage from Shutter Island

Shutter IslandUnsettling images are on parade in the new TV spot for Martin Scorsese's retro-noir thriller Shutter Island. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as a pair of U.S. Marshals sent to investigate the disappearance of a woman at an Alcatraz-like asylum for the criminally insane.

The 30-second commercial, which is scheduled to air during the Super Bowl this weekend, opens with DiCaprio being welcomed to the island but, from the look of things, that's pretty much the last vestige of comfort he is likely to get. After that, it's all nightmarish staccato flashes of half-glimpsed terrors and a doctor's voice ominously intoning, "Men of violence are my specialty."

Of course, men of violence have long been Scorsese's specialty as well. But the build up is as important as the delivery, and in a couple of recently released behind-the-scenes videos we can see the legendary director at work on some of the relatively quieter early scenes in Shutter Island, before events have gotten too terribly disturbing.

  • Mel Gibson Talks Mad Max 4 and His Viking Movie

Mel GibsonMel Gibson and his production company, Icon Entertainment, may be co-producing the upcoming Mad Max 4, but there's no word if Gibson will appear in the movie. Gibson spoke to Collider about the project, but didn't exactly clear up the confusion.

I've talked to [director] George [Miller] [about Mad Max 4] ... yeah. We talk all the time anyway. I'm abreast of that. He's been trying to do this for years — the 4th installment. At one point I was involved and it fell to bits and then this and that ... so now it's probably gone through a lot of changes and I can't wait to see it cause everything he does is magic. There is a touch of genius about George.

While it doesn't sound like Mel will play a role in the sequel, it doesn't exactly close the door either. While Gibson didn't speak about his next starring role in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, which is drawing protests in Mexico, he did open up about his next directorial project, which will be an untitled movie about Vikings written by The Departed screenwriter William Monahan (who also wrote Gibson's upcoming Edge of Darkness) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

[Next,] I'm working with [producer] Graham [King] on the Viking movie. The very first idea I ever had about making a film ... my first thought about ever being a filmmaker was when I was sixteen years old and I wanted to make a Viking movie. And I wanted to make it in old Norse, which I was studying at the time. It's odd because at that age that's a stupidly ridiculous idea cause how will I ever be a filmmaker. It's just some kind of romantic pipe dream. But that was the first big, epic, wacky idea I ever had was to show Viking real.

I think it's going to be [in] English — the English that would have been spoken back then — and Old Norse. Whatever the 9th century had to offer. I'm going to give you real.

Going back to the original dialect will be a key for the movie, Gibson revealed.

I want a Viking to scare you. I don't want a Viking to say, "I'm going to die with a sword in my hand." I don't want to hear that. It pulls the rug out from under you. I want to see somebody who I have never seen before speaking low guttural German who scares the living s**t out of me coming up to my house. What is that like? What would that have been like?

  • New Inception Trailer and Poster
    Inception

So far, nothing has made much sense about Christopher Nolan's thriller Inception, not the few revealed plot details, nor even the trailer. The latest poster is no help in that regard, showing only a cityscape. Considering that the movie is about the "architecture of the mind," does this mean that the entire city be inside the mind?

It's doubtful that the latest trailer will answer these questions, either. Screening before Sherlock Holmes, several websites that saw the trailer at a recent press screening have done their best to interpret the images and voice-over from Leonardo DiCaprio, which sounds something like this:

What's the most resilient form of parasite? An idea. An idea has the power to build a city ... to change the world, and re-write all the rules ... and that's why I need to steal it.

A version of the trailer, dubbed only in French with no English subtitles, has been doing the rounds on the internet, even though Warner Brothers has been quick to shut it down wherever it lands. You can check it out here, though it may not last for long.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio Gets Animated for The Guardians

Leonardo DiCaprioActor Leonardo DiCaprio has played a wide variety of roles during his career, from a drug-addicted teenager in The Basketball Diaries to the visionary industrialist Howard Hughes in The Aviator. Now, the three-time Academy Award-nominated actor is preparing to add a completely different type of character to his impressive resume by starring in his first-ever animated feature.

A recent DreamWorks press release has been announced that DiCaprio will lend his voice to the character of Jack Frost in The Guardians (working title), a feature-length animated film based on The Guardians of Childhood series of books by William Joyce. The DreamWorks release included a brief synopsis of the movie's plot.

When an evil spirit called Pitch becomes bent upon taking over the world by inspiring fear in the hearts of kids everywhere, a group of our greatest heroes — Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost — band together for the first time, determined to stand in Pitch's way. More than a collection of storybook subjects, "The Guardians" are also a band of superheroes, who possess their own special powers. Now joined in opposition of a common foe, the Guardians heed the call and combine their powers to defeat Pitch and protect the world from his campaign of fear.

The Guardians is being produced by Christina Steinberg and Nancy Bernstein, with Peter Ramsey directing. No other cast announcements have been made.

While no official images accompanied the DreamWorks press release, the movie site SlashFilm has posted a "concept rendering" of DiCaprio's character.

  • Tom Hardy Fighting with Leonardo DiCaprio on the Inception Set

Tom HardyTom Hardy's career certainly isn't getting banged up, but the British actor sure is. Hardy talked to MTV from the set of Inception, Christopher Nolan's upcoming thriller that no one will discuss, where he admitted he often brawls in between takes with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

He's a big MMA fan, so we've been kicking each other. Kicking and elbowing each other. He keeps bruising me. He gives me as good as he gets.

Hardy's work in front of the camera doesn't sound much better considering the scene he was currently working on involved him "being plummeted through a floor." Before Inception, Hardy was working on the mixed martial arts drama Warrior, where he suffered a broken toe, torn ligaments, and cracked ribs. In comparison, Hardy seems quite happy sparring with DiCaprio.

I was in shellshock because I'd been pretty badly beaten up on [Warrior]. It was like [Christopher Nolan] swept me up on this carpet of love and took me around the world.

  • A Few Inception Details Sneak Out

InceptionThe mystery surrounding Christopher Nolan's upcoming thriller Inception has been extremely hard to penetrate. Along with the earlier trailer revelation that it contains airborne hallway battles, there's the photographic "reveal" this weekend that the movie will feature a sharply dressed Leonardo DiCaprio sitting dangerously on a window sill.

In addition, Nolan favorite Michael Caine has offered up a small tidbit about his role: "I play a professor who's teaching a guy science," Caine told Empire. "It's Leonardo DiCaprio. He's going off to do a science project and he speaks to me before he goes."

Caine couldn't reveal more because he was only handed his one scene, but another Nolan regular, Cillian Murphy, has seen the entire script and still wouldn't reveal much about the movie to MTV.

This is my third film with Chris. He showed me the whole script. It's very very complex and amazing. I'm hugely excited for next year when it comes out. It's conceptual. It doesn't fit into any genre. There are elements of different types of things in it but it is all from Chris' imagination. I've never read anything close to it before.

There is one thing Nolan can't keep secret: Inception opens July 16, 2010.

  • Second Trailer for Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island

Shutter IslandOriginally scheduled to have opened this past weekend, Martin Scorsese's gothic thriller Shutter Island has been delayed until February 19, 2010. Instead, the studio is offering us another trailer with new glimpses of the mysteries and horrors lurking inside this Alcatraz-like asylum for the criminally insane.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo play 1950's federal marshals sent to investigate the disappearance of an inmate who, the chief physician (Ben Kingsley) informs them, appears to have "evaporated, right through the walls." Once they arrive, they find themselves treated almost like patients themselves and nothing is as it seems. The nightmarish, apparently drug-induced, visions don't appear to be helping their investigation much either. Check it out below.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio Joins The Deep Blue Goodbye

Leonard DiCaprioHere's some shocking news: Leonardo DiCaprio is setting up a possible franchise for himself at Fox that has zero input from Martin Scorsese ... at least so far.

Variety reports that DiCaprio is set to star in an adaptation of The Deep Blue Goodbye, where he will portray Floridian "salvage consultant" Travis McGee in the first of what was to become a 21-book series by the late mystery novelist John D. MacDonald. In the book, DiCaprio's character, who recovers lost or stolen items or money for clients, tracks down a psychotic murderer in possession of a soldier's treasure lost somewhere in the Florida Keys. No details were given on how Dana Steven has altered the story in her screenplay.

No director is currently attached to The Deep Blue Goodbye, but with DiCaprio also serving as producer, it's expected that DiCaprio will find a suitable candidate. Considering his almost constant working relationship with Scorsese, could he be along for the ride? Their first joint effort on a thriller, Shutter Island, has been pushed back for a February 19, 2010, release, usually not a good sign. However, bringing on Scorsese might help DiCaprio seal himself into a franchise, though with his current schedule loaded with movies like Brave New World, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (with Scorsese), and about 24 others, who knows when DiCaprio will find the time to complete The Deep Blue Goodbye, much less 21 more crime movies.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio Journeys to a Brave New World

Director Ridley Scott is highly regarded by fans of science fiction as a visionary thanks to his 1982 movie Blade Runner, an adaptation of the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick. So Universal Pictures has high hopes that if anyone can faithfully translate the classic dystopian novel Brave New World into celluloid, it's Scott. Of course, having an A-list actor like Leonardo DiCaprio on board to star in the movie can't hurt.

Writer Aldous Huxley's most famous work, Brave New World takes place in the bleak future of the 26th century, where society is rigidly stratified, families are outlawed, and human reproduction occurs only in factories. Rumors have circulated about Scott's involvement in a possible movie adaptation of the novel for a while now, but this is the first time that the noted director has been officially linked to the project. Scott and DiCaprio have set up shop at Universal and will co-produce via their respective production companies, Scott Free and Appian Way. The two have worked together as director and actor before, on Body of Lies, and are expected to reprise that dynamic on this movie, with DiCaprio likely playing Bernard, the central character in Huxley's novel.

    Leonardo DiCaprio

It's unclear at what phase of development Brave New World is in, but it's unlikely that it will get off of the ground anytime soon because of the plethora of projects Scott and DiCaprio are currently involved in. Scott is currently shooting Robin Hood and has as many as ten other features in various stages of development, while DiCaprio is currently filming Christopher Nolan's Inception and is attached to star in at least a dozen other movies, including at least two genre films: Aquaman, based on the DC Comics superhero, and Akira, a live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Ôtomo's award-winning anime.

  • Titanic to Set Sail in 3D?

Titanic posterEmpire caught up with Titanic mastermind James Cameron at Comic-Con and the talk inevitably turned to a 3D version of his epic disaster movie. When asked about the possibility, Cameron said:

"We're going to do Titanic in 3-D! We've already done a 90 second clip of it and it's phenomenal and gorgeous, so that's going to be the project for next year. It's a conversion of it, not native photography; we can't go back."

He also expressed interest in giving Terminator 2 the 3D treatment, saying it "could be fun because I think that's a film that stands the test of time for me." Is a bigger, better Titanic something you'd like to see? Or is Leonardo DiCaprio in 3D too much for anyone to sit through? We're sure Kate Winslet wouldn't get too many complaints...

  • Leonardo DiCaprio Hires Writer to Pen Twilight Zone Movie

Leonard DiCaprioVariety is reporting that Leonardo DiCaprio and his production company Appian Way have hired Rand Ravich to pen a new Twilight Zone movie. Ravich wrote the screenplay for The Astronaut's Wife and also created the NBC TV series Life.

This would be the second cinematic adaptation of Rod Serling's classic TV series, which ran from 1959 to 1964 and included 156 episodes. The first movie came in 1983, with segments directed by Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante (Gremlins, Small Soldiers), and John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson's Thriller video).

There's no official word yet on if DiCaprio will star in the film, or if the movie will draw material from the TV series.

  • Christopher Nolan May Not Return for Batman 3

The Dark KnightChristian Bale has already bemoaned that he is contractually obligated to return for Batman 3 whether Christopher Nolan is involved or not. While Nolan and writer David Goyer have been discussing possible story ideas for some time, Bale may be without the director that revitalized the Batman franchise with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

According to a source speaking with Batman-on-Film, it took a lot of convincing to bring Nolan back for The Dark Knight, but after Heath Ledger's tragic death, it may be impossible to convince the director to come back again. The source confirmed that Nolan, Goyer, and Jonathan Nolan have discussed story ideas, but had originally intended for the Joker to return in Batman 3, creating a problem they have not been able to solve. So far, no decisions have been made regarding the story for Batman 3, pushing the movie's release until 2012 or, possibly, 2013.

Nolan is currently working on Inception, his sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Obviously, fans would love to have Nolan return for the third Batman, but until Nolan's involvement is official, they will have to find solace in a report from February that said Nolan's studio deal for Inception included an agreement to make Batman 3. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Scorsese to Tackle Frank Sinatra

Universal and Mandalay will bring the first feature-length biopic of Frank Sinatra to the big screen, with the legendary Martin Scorsese directing. No actors are yet attached to the untitled project, but Leonardo DiCaprio should be considered a prime candidate, since he has starred in Scorsese's last four movies.

"Ol' Blue Eyes" received the small-screen treatment in 1992 with the TV miniseries Sinatra, which starred Philip Casnoff and won two Golden Globes. However, bringing a big-screen movie to fruition proved a daunting task. Executive producers Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman apparently worked for several years to acquire all the necessary rights to Sinatra's music and life story, Schulman told Variety:

The responsibility we are taking on to tell his story ... that would cause anyone to be very careful about who they grant these rights to.... Everyone knows that Marty Scorsese is a final-cut director. So there had to be a lot of trust that he would tell this story in a way that didn't destroy [Sinatra's] memory.

Speaking about the movie itself, Schulman added:

It's not a cradle-to-the-grave traditional portrait of the consecutive events in a man's life. Instead, it's more of a collage, and in many ways, it will feel like an album itself. It's a collection of various moments and impressions in his life, and together, we hope they'll tell the full story and present full themes.

The movie's screenwriter, Phil Alden Robinson, wrote and directed Field of Dreams. He's also executive producing with Sinatra's dauger, Tina Sinatra, and Gary LeMel, former president of worldwide music distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures.

  • Leo to Join Nolan's Inception

Lenoardo DiCaprio Joins InceptionDirector Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller Inception, otherwise known as the movie that's keeping a sequel to The Dark Knight on hold, has found the star power it needs to compete on its tough opening day of July 16, 2010, the same opening day as possible superhero blockbuster Thor. Variety reports that Leonardo DiCaprio will join Nolan for the first time to star in the thriller about the "architecture of the mind."

  • Advice for Directors Married to Movie Stars

Kate WinsletKate Winslet tells People.com she had a "total meltdown" while her husband Sam Mendes was directing her in a sex scene with Leo DiCaprio for the upcoming Revolutionary Road. Apparently Mendes was giving her too many detailed instructions about where her hands should be and things like that. Admittedly, this is a small demographic, but just in case you happen to be a director married to a movie star, you can learn from Mendes' mistakes. Some rules to follow:

    1) Make sure you give your wife's co-star some instructions too, so she doesn't feel like she's the only one doing things wrong.

    2) Don't be afraid to let her improvise a little; a little extra film footage is much cheaper than a divorce.

    3) Never, ever, ever tell her her posterior looks fat out of those jeans.

  • Marvel Eyeing Leonardo DiCaprio for Captain America

Captain America?A decade ago, a headline like the one above would have elicited a hearty laugh. But with more "serious actor" types like Christian Bale, Edward Norton and Robert Downey Jr. gravitating toward big-budget comic book flicks, the prospect of Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio donning the red, white and blue tights as the patriotic superhero Captain America is no longer so absurd.

According to LatinoReview.com, Marvel Studios has yet to approach Leo for the role; they've simply placed him atop their wish list. Still, the mere possibility is more than enough to inspire furious debate on fanboy discussion boards everywhere. Personally, I think Leo's voice is a bit too whiny for Steve Rogers/Captain America. Plus, his oversized noggin might prove a tad distracting while in costume, dwarfing Cap's iconic shield. Disagree? Discuss.

The studio is hoping for similar success with their new pickup, the South Korean thriller hit The Chaser. The studio is taking a similar approach to Departed, with early talk of Departed screenwriter William Monahan writing Chaser and Leonardo DiCaprio as a possible lead.
