  • "Twisted" Oz Project Clarified
    Oz

The creator of the popular Spawn line of comics and toys, Todd McFarlane, recently went on record as saying that screenwriter Josh Olson's adaptation of the works by famed writer L. Frank Baum wasn't "sexy" enough and that Warner Bros. executives were "lukewarm" to it.

Now Olson is striking back at McFarlane and his adult-oriented "Twisted Land of Oz" toys. In an open letter to the public, Olson said:

Just to clarify - the Oz project I wrote wasn't "twisted" in any way. McFarlane's involvement with the project and the fact that his line of toys live up to that epithet has led to a lot of confusion in the last couple years. The pitch I sold to Warners was entirely my own, based on events in several of the Baum books, combined with a story of my own creation.

But for the record, the project we sold Warners on was in no way based on the "Twisted Land of Oz" figures. There was no bondage Dorothy, and no gigantic Toto monster. I've never met Todd, never heard his take, and we had one brief telephone conversation after I sold the pitch in which no details of the project were discussed. To be honest, I don't even know if he's read my script.

  • Venom Could Return in Spider-Man 4

Spider-Man 4Sam Raimi has been clear that the villains of Spider-Man 4 will be revealed by Sony at the end of the summer when the script is delivered. However, that hasn't stopped former Spider-Man artist and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane from speculating about a Spider-Man 4 return of Venom, Spider-Man's evil counterpart (played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3). McFarlane told MTV:

I co-created Venom. He was in the last Spider-Man movie. And I think he might make an appearance here in the next one, too.

If Venom does return, McFarlane would like to see some changes:

I would've done a few things different [in Spider-Man 3]. I would've done something more dramatic. When I first created him, I made him huge. That would've been the first thing for me; I would've wanted somebody who looked like he was three times the size of Spider-Man, so it was almost like Spider-Man going against the Hulk. [I also would've increased] the nastiness. I think one of the reasons why Wolverine is so popular is because he did stuff that Captain America or Batman would never do. Today's generation, they can handle that stuff.

Sony sure wouldn't mind a little of Wolverine's recent success.
