  • Matt Damon and Josh Brolin Joining True Grit

Josh BrolinVariety reports that Josh Brolin and Matt Damon are looking to re-team with Joel and Ethan Coen for their upcoming "adaptation" of True Grit.

OK, so Damon has never worked with the Coens before, but he did have a small scene in Finding Forrester, which starred Sean Connery who was in The Rock with Nicolas Cage, so it's practically a return. Brolin is certainly returning, having worked with the Coens on their award-winning No Country For Old Men.

Matt Damon in The InformantDamon is in talks to play a lawman who teams up with U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges stepping in for the late John Wayne) and a 14-year-old girl that head into Native American territory to find the murderer of the girl's father. Brolin is negotiating to play the killer.

The Coens are directing and producing True Grit from their script, which will follow the original Charles Portis novel that inspired the 1969 movie that garnered Wayne an Oscar. True Grit will start production next March and open in late 2010.

The Coens' latest, A Serious Man, received strong reviews and is in theaters now.

  • Josh Brolin Replaces Sean Penn in Cartel

Josh BrolinVariety reports that Josh Brolin has been selected to replace one of the roles vacated by Sean Penn when Penn unexpectedly went on hiatus for personal reasons.

Brolin will star in director Asger Leth's Cartel, which tells the story of a man living in the world of Mexican drug cartels. He must fight to protect his son after his wife is murdered. Production is scheduled to begin early next year in Mexico City.

The screenplay, which was penned by Peter Craig, is loosely based on the 1993 Italian flick La Scorta (The Escort), which involves a judge in a dangerous part of Sicily who takes a job trying to unravel a Mafia plot.

Cartel is scheduled for release sometime next year, although no specific date has been announced.

  • Michael Douglas Reveals Wall Street 2 Details, New Shia LaBeouf Pics Released

Bruce CampbellEmpire recently spoke with Michael Douglas about Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.

The movie, due next April, is Oliver Stone's follow-up to his 1987 movie about a naive young broker (played by Charlie Sheen) who gets taken under the wing of Douglas' character, the monstrous bigwig Gordon "Greed Is Good" Gekko. Douglas went on to win an Oscar for his performance, and to many audiences, Gekko remains one of the most-vile-yet-charismatic villains ever portrayed on screen.

In the interview, Douglas talked a bit about the plot of the new movie, as well as its current relevance.

It's 22 years later. Gordon has done about eight years in jail and got out in about 2001. The picture predominantly focuses on these last couple of years on Wall Street, which nobody anticipated. We shot the first one in 1986 and it was a wild, wild colourful time. And here we have both a train crash and a larger-than-life period leading up to that train crash. It's an exciting time to make a picture about Wall Street.

Douglas will star opposite Shia LaBeouf, who plays an ambitious young trader, similar to Sheen's character in the first movie. Check out LaBeouf in these stills, courtesy of Reel Loop.

Money Never Sleeps also stars Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and Josh Brolin. Oliver Stone has confirmed that Charlie Sheen will also make an appearance.

  • Frank Langella to Star in Wall Street 2, Josh Brolin May Join as Well

Frank LangellaVariety reports that Frank Langella, the veteran actor who most recently starred in Frost/Nixon, has joined the cast of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.

The movie, due next April, is Oliver Stone's follow-up to his 1987 movie about a naive young broker (played by Charlie Sheen) who gets taken under the wing of the monstrous bigwig Gordon "Greed Is Good" Gekko (played by Michael Douglas). Douglas went on to win an Oscar for his performance, and to many audiences, Gekko remains one of the most vile-yet-charismatic villains ever portrayed on screen.

Douglas has already agreed to reprise the role, and Shia LaBeouf is on board as an ambitious young trader, similar to Sheen's character in the first movie. At one time, Javier Bardem was rumored to star, but he has since confirmed that he will not take part.

Langella, meanwhile, will play the role of an older broker who mentors LaBeouf's character. He is also scheduled to star in the thriller The Box, from writer/director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales), and All Good Things from director Andrew Jarecki (Capturing the Friedmans).

In addition, Josh Brolin is rumored as a possible addition to the Wall Street 2 cast, although nothing official has been announced.

  • Jonah Hex Poster Revealed at SDCC

    Comic-Con 2009: San Diego

Jonah HexThe first official poster for Jonah Hex was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con, and by the looks of it, Megan Fox fans are not going to be disappointed by the corset-bound starlet. However, they will likely ignore Josh Brolin's contribution.

Jonah Hex opens June 18, 2010, and stars Brolin as Hex. A scarred bounty hunter, Hex is hunting down a voodoo practitioner (John Malkovich ) who is trying to raise an army of the undead and liberate the South.

IGN saw the trailer at SDCC and called it "a nice blend of the Western aesthetic with elements of horror." From the plot description, that sounds about right.

  • First Pics of Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex

Take a first look at Josh Brolin as the comic-book-confederate turned bounty hunter Jonah Hex. Our friend Harry Knowles over at AICN received the images from a sneaky onset spy.

The photos show the normally handsome Brolin in dirty Civil War garb, sporting a nasty scar on the right side of his face—a ritual mutilation given to Hex by Apache Indians.

Punch replaces Nicole Kidman, who had to withdraw due to a scheduling conflict with John Cameron Mitchell's The Rabbit Hole, which she is starring in and producing.  Details of the plot of Allen's movie are unclear, but according to sources, Punch may play an escort similar to the one made famous by the Eliot Spitzer scandal.

Punch's previous credits include Being Julia, Hot Fuzz, Young Americans, and CBS's sitcom The Class She joins a cast that includes Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts, and Freida Pinto.

  • Woody Allen to Drool Over Freida Pinto

Freida PintoFresh off Slumdog's Oscar wins, Freida Pinto has signed on to play an ingenue in an upcoming, untitled Woody Allen film.

Wonder if ScarJo feels slighted by the Wood-man giving some other hot young thing the ingenue role?

The cast of the movie also includes Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin, and Anthony Hopkins. We can only hope this career development doesn't lead Pinto down an annoying ScarJo career path of He's Just Not That Into You proportions. Let us not forget ladies, it takes more than a pretty face and a "Woody-Ingenue Title" to make a career.

  • John Malkovich Joins Jonah Hex Movie

John MalkovichJosh Brolin's Jonah Hex movie now has another awesome actor joining its ranks. John Malkovich has joined the upcoming adaptation about the comic book cowboy and Confederate bounty hunter.

Not surprisingly, Malkovich will be playing antagonist Quentin Turnbull, who's also known as the man with the eagle-topped cane. Turnbull's son was one of Jonah Hex's military mates in the Civil War, but was killed by Union soldiers who pinned the murder on Jonah, saying he was traitor to the Confederacy. Revenge over his son's death is what sets Malkovitch's character after Hex.

The movie is still in pre-production but will be directed by Horton Hears A Who! helmer, Jimmy Hayward.

  • Josh Brolin on Jonah Hex's New Director

Josh BrolinCollider managed to cull an update on Jonah Hex from Milk star Josh Brolin, who's slated to star in the adaptation of the cult fave comic -- if and when the long-delayed project ever does move forward. When asked why Horten Hears a Who! director Jimmy Hayward was chosen to helm the flick, Brolin replied, "He got an e-mail to me somehow, someway. He wasn't somebody we were even beginning to look at and I read the e-mail and was completely blown away by it. I had to meet the guy."

What was contained in said email that "blew away" Brolin is anybody's guess. Perhaps Hayward got his hands on some incriminating photos of the notorious Hollywood badboy and made some veiled threats. Whatever the case, kudos to Jimmy.

  • Punisher: War Zone Director Mulling Jonah Hex Gig

After being unceremoniously dumped by co-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, D.C. Comics' Confederate anti-hero Jonah Hex is on the prowl for a new helmer to guide his path to the big screen. One name that's emerged as a possibility is Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander, who revealed today that she's on the Jonah Hex short list:

"One of (the scripts) that's been sent to me -- and I'm sure it's been sent to many, many other directors -- is one I've never heard about called Jonah Hex," the German-born filmmaker recounted at today's Punisher press day. "I opened up the first two pages and I was like, 'Great, I'll be doing the same thing for the next 15 years.' But then you get into it...and on page 15 I started visualizing things."

Alexander added later that while she liked the script, it would need some re-tooling before it was production-ready. No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin is still attached to star.

Next Showing: Punisher: War Zone opens nationwide this Friday.

  • Will it be Josh Brolin vs. Christian Bale in Terminator 4?

Josh Brolin, Terminator? With the recent casting of Christian Bale as the emo-punk-turned-leader-of-the-resistance John Connor in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the natural follow-up question arose: Who will play Bale's cyborg stalker in the fourth installment of the blockbuster sci-fi franchise? After all, this ain't no whiny pencil-neck Edward Furlong (or, if you prefer, T3's Nick Stahl) we're talking about; a robot capable of taking down Batman is gonna have to be seriously badass.

With that in mind, Jason Coleman of 213.net prodded T4 director McG for some answers and got this reply:

"It's very difficult to say because it's a decidedly masculine role and I think we're living in a time where a lot of actors are very effeminate and they're sort of skinny, heroin chic and there's really a masculine component to the role. And there's guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we'll see."

No "skinny" or "effeminate" actors? Guess that leaves Ryan Phillippe out of the running.

  • George W to get the Oliver Stone treatment

Political power-movie mogul and conspiracy theorist extraordinaire Oliver Stone has set his sights on a new candidate for his lens - George W. Bush.

Indeed, the man behind JFKAlexander and Nixon is in the process of securing funding for Bush, a movie about George W., with Josh Brolin attached to play the lead. Stone's next project was originally supposed to be Pinkville, about the massacre at My Lai, but that project was halted due to the writers' strike. Bush, however, can go forward because the script was complete before the strike (Pinkville still needs revisions).

Reports are that Stone is trying to get production in gear by the spring so that the movie can hit theaters in time for the November election.

We are very intrigued to see how Stone paints the POTUS.

  • Brolin Indicates Goonies 2 Unlikely

"Where does he get his information?" Josh Brolin asked ReelzChannel when told about Sean Astin's recent comments on a Goonies sequel calling it an "Absolute Certainty."

Astin went on in an interview with ReelzChannel in October to talk about the possibilties of a cartoon and also another live action movie.

"I think he wants it to happen so badly that he’s just telling people it’s happening," Brolin said with a laugh.

Brolin was also less sure about the idea in general, feeling that the original is probably better left to stand on it's own. "It would be great. Or maybe not. It’s hard to say. It’s kind of great for what it is. From a business sense maybe it would be smart to do it again, but do you really want to do that to the original?

"Then it becomes about, “I loved Goonies, but did you see the second one? That was just kind of a bummer. Brand turned out to be a homeless alcoholic and it was awful." (Laughs)

Check out our full interview with Brolin for the Coen Brother's new flick, No Country For Old Men.
