  • I Can Do Bad All by Myself Reviews

9It took until September for the prolific Tyler Perry to release his second movie of the year. Is it worth the wait?

9"I Can Do Bad All By Myself, based on Perry's play of the same name, is all that, with a booster shot: It's probably the impresario's best-made movie yet, his most joyful, and his most moving."

    — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

6"Perry plugs into the primal power of gospel, blues, soul, and the black church in ways that make Bad far more affecting than it has any right to be. His oeuvre has always been shameless and over the top, but Bad might just be the first of Perry's films to border on operatic."

    — Nathan Rabin, Onion AV Club

5"Mr. Perry, who also wrote and directed the film, becomes mired in clichés when the movie turns to its capital-L subjects, Love and Loss. And — no surprise here — he goes on two or three tear-jerks too long and passes up an opportunity for a nice, understated ending in favor of a gaudy, obvious one. Restraint, though, is hardly what fans of the Madea franchise are after."

    — Neil Genzlinger, New York Times

5"...Perry's latest emotional roller coaster starts with considerable promise and a high-wattage cast, including Taraji P. Henson and singers Gladys Knight and Mary J. Blige, before giving way to melodramatic predictability."

    — Peter DeBruge, Variety

    5"Alternately stupefying and entertaining...."

    — Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter

  • Tyler Perry Wants Madea Dead

MadeaShocker! Tyler Perry would like to see Madea die. "I would love to see Madea die a slow death in the next film," he confesses. It's not such a shocking confession when you consider the effort it takes for the man to play the big momma. Madea may be "a whole lot of fun to watch," says Perry, "But to do it is a nightmare."

The nightmare involves zipping his 6-foot-5-inch self into a sweat-inducing body suit with heavy hips and big breasts. "Holding those things upright can be tough," he says. But considering that Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail won the box office last weekend, earning $41 million in three days, we're guessing Perry will keep somehow manage to keep bearing the burden and Madea will remain alive and well.

  • Exclusive New Images from Madea Goes to Jail and Madea MySpace Page Launches

Just in time for a certain rapidly-approaching holiday, we've got two exclusive new images from Madea Goes to Jail. Both feature Madea in the slammer, something we can't wait to see on film. The first even shows the big lady sporting a new (to us?) hairstyle with her grey locks done up in braids, while the always flamboyantly dressed Leroy stands by holding what looks to be a bible. In the second, our lady is shown doing laundry in the slammer -- perhaps her job in there -- but with more sass than we've ever seen someone approach a commercial dryer.

We've also got word of a new MySpace page for the movie that launched last night. It's not a page for Madea herself but for a movement to "Free Madea" from jail. The site tells you how you can attend a rally in your area to support the cause. If that's sounds like too much effort, it might be easier to just kill some time at work inserting your own photo into Madea's mugshots, which you can also do on the page.

  • Meet the Browns on TV

Tyler Perry's MadeaVariety reports that TBS has commissioned Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, which scored almost $42 million theatrically earlier this year, as a 10-episode half-hour television series. The show will be taped in Atlanta, where Perry's other show, House of Payne, currently tapes.

David Mann will reprise his role of Leroy Brown from the movie. No word, yet, on whether other cast members from the Browns -- such as Angela Bassett, Rick Fox, or Perry, himself -- will appear in the series.

Meet the Browns will debut on TBS in January.

  • Tyler Perry's Madea Offers Life Lessons to Live By
This weekend Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns hits theaters nationwide. The director has been on quite a hot streak at theaters over the last few years successfully converting his stage shows to the big screen. Although some critics have been baffled by their success, Perry's movies have an undeniably loyal fan following that seem to identify with the world Perry (and his elderly alter ego in drag, Madea) have created.

Although Madea only makes a brief appearance in Meet the Browns, the wisdom she has taught us over the course of Tyler Perry's filmography applies not just to his movies, but to life in general. In an exclusive from Hawa Macalou, Tyler Perry's Madea offers up five lessons to live by.
