  • Disney Rejects David Mamet's Version of Anne Frank

David MametAbout six weeks ago, Disney announced that it was considering a new movie based on The Diary of Anne Frank, with David Mamet to direct. Like most people, we had only one thought: David Mamet and Disney?!

The acclaimed director and playwright — who earned a Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross and a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination for Wag the Dog — is famous for his poetic use of vile language and his unsparing examination of racial and sexual politics, hardly family-friendly stuff. It seemed like a match made in hell, and yesterday, Disney finally seemed to realize it.

The Wrap reports that the studio officially announced that they are abandoning the project. One executive made a statement to the press:

It's very intense, and dark and scary. It's not a film version of The Diary of Anne Frank. The story evolved into something more intense.

Apparently, what Mamet had in mind was a complete reimagining. His version would involve a young girl who travels to present-day Israel and learns about the horrors of suicide bombing. The story would also involve a very intense examination of current anti-Semitism.

Again, we have to ask: Why was this ever brought to Disney?! Now that the project is in turnaround, we suppose Mamet will take it somewhere else. Hopefully, he'll exercise better judgment next time.

  • Disney to Produce New Diary of Anne Frank Movie, David Mamet To Direct

Disney has acquired the rights to The Diary of Anne Frank and plans to make a new movie adaptation with David Mamet, according to Variety.

Frank's diary chronicles her time in hiding from the Nazis. She and several family members resided in a secret attic in Amsterdam for two years before being captured and sent to concentration camps. Frank died just a few months before the end of World War II in May 1945. Her family published the diary posthumously, and it has since sold many millions of copies in all major languages.

Mamet is perhaps most famous as a playwright, earning a Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross, which was adapted for the screen in 1992. He directed The Spanish Prisoner, Heist, and State and Main, and also earned a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination for Wag the Dog (1997).

Reportedly, Mamet will add his own interpretation, drawing from both the original diary and the play by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich. That play led to the 1959 movie adaptation, which won three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Shelley Winters. Here is the trailer:

  • David Mamet on Redbelt

He of the acid tongue, David Mamet, is turning over a new leaf with Redbelt, his ode to the mixed martial arts starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as a jiujitsu instructor forced into the competitive arena against his will.

Turns out the writer/director responsible for such lines as 'Coffee is for closers' is actually a very polite, nice, teddybear of a guy in person, as I discovered during our Redbelt interview. And he's been studying jiujitsu for years.

Read more about what he has to say in my Interview with Redbelt's David Mamet.

Next Showing: Redbelt opens Friday, May 2, 2008.
