According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barack Obama's mother is going to be the subject of an upcoming documentary. Stanley Ann Dunham: A Most Generous Spirit will focus on both her raising Obama in Indonesia and Hawaii and her contributions to female entrepreneurs in Third World countries.
Mary Aloe of Aloe Entertainment, who is executive producing the project, spoke briefly about Dunham.
She gave a lot of the backbone to our current president and his compassion to the people. With these small-scale economies, she took a concept that was emerging just as women were getting their rights and got them to think outside the box. She is a fascinating woman, and she was ahead of her time.
The movie will be directed by noted African-American filmmaker Charles Burnett, a veteran known for his focus on everyday life in Black America. His 1977 feature Killer of Sheep depicted urban life in Los Angeles and was shot during his time as a student at UCLA. Arguably his most high-profile release was To Sleep with Anger (1990), which starred Danny Glover. Most recently, Burnett completed Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation in 2007.
The project will reportedly begin shooting early next year in Indonesia, Hawaii, and Washington. Producers are currently working to secure Obama's participation.
