  • Scream 4 a Hit at the American Film Market

Neve CampbellThe American Film Market is an annual meeting where the movie industry gathers together to sell or buy distribution rights and gain financing for upcoming projects. ScreenDaily reports that 2009's AFM was a success for independent studios, particularly The Weinstein Company's upcoming project Scream 4. Through the AFM, a teaser poster and synopsis were revealed.

The horror series that reignited the genre and gross[ed] more than $500 million worldwide is back! From Kevin Williamson, creator of the original Scream trilogy, the new film sees the return of cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, along with a group of new stars, who can all hopefully stay alive long enough to figure out the new rules to this one-of-a-kind horror franchise!

The synopsis agrees with the Scream 4 details Williamson revealed to MTV.

The fourth one is an ensemble. It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more.

Williamson says he is currently writing the script for 4, while planing a new Scream trilogy that will be well aware of its numeric place in its own franchise.

I guess I'll just have to be very aware of the fact that we're a 4 and that we're beating a dead dog. I'm going to make that very apparent in the dialogue.

Come on! It's the age of the remake! And 3-D and all that [other current horror fads], can you imagine what [Scream's movie-within-a-movie] Stab 10 is like?

Scream 4 currently has no director attached.

  • David Arquette Confirms Role in Scream 4 with Courtney Cox

In an interview with Marc Malkin of E! Online, David Arquette confirmed that he and his wife Courtney Cox have signed on for a fourth installment of the Scream franchise.

We are going to be doing Scream 4. Kevin Williamson is writing the script at this moment, and hopefully Wes Craven is going to direct ... Kevin has sort of put out the broad strokes, but I don't think I'm at liberty to share any of that.

The franchise began in 1996 with Scream. Neve Campbell starred as Sidney, a suburban teenager hunted by a serial killer who takes cues from horror movies. Arquette played Dewey, a hapless local cop who falls in love with Cox's character, the opportunistic reporter Gale Weathers.

Two sequels followed over the next four years. Craven directed all three installments, while Williamson wrote the scripts for Scream and Scream 2 before deciding not to return for the third movie.

Campbell has decided against playing Sidney a fourth time, but Arquette said he hopes she reconsiders. He also talked about his enthusiasm for the project:

I fell in love with my wife on Scream, so the opportunity to bring [Dewey] back to life and for my wife to play that really bitchy character again, it's just going to be really fun. It's just great.
