• Thriller newz: Armored and Escape from New York

  Matt Dillon has just signed on to star in Armored, a thriller about an armored car guard who succombs to the temptation of the $10 million in his truck. Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) will direct.

  Things aren't going so well for the Escape From New York crew, however. Gerard Butler had signed on for the remake, but has left over 'creative differences' (don't they all?). New Line has commissioned a rewrite by Jonathan Mostow, with whom they may also replace Len Wiseman as director.

• Movie newz: Youth in Revolt, Escape from New York, and The Unforgettable

  Michael Cera's star is definitely rising. After making his name as in awkward teen roles in the critical favorite Arrested Development as well as this weekend's Superbad, Cera has signed to star in Youth in Revolt. The teen comedy was adapted and will be directed by Gustin Nash (Charlie Bartlett) from C.D. Payne's self-published 1993 novel about a teenager who goes to great lengths to win a girl he meets on a family vacation, reports Variety.

  Variety is also reporting that director Len Wiseman has picked his next project. The man behind Live Free or Die Hard will be remaking Escape From New York, with a script by Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down). 300's Gerard Butler will play the Snake Plissken role, which was originated by Kurt Russell.

  And Tarsem Singh (The Cell) plans to direct The Unforgettable, a sci-fi movie about a homicide cop who realizes not only that he isn't human, but that there is an alien war on. Originally entitled Species X, Singh will direct from a script by Kurt Sutter says The Hollywood Reporter. Sutter also wrote The Punisher sequel (official title: Punisher: Welcome Back Frank).

• And the Golden Popcorn goes to...

  The 2007 MTV Movie Awards went off without a hitch last night, as the music network celebrated the edgier side of Hollywood by doling out its irreverent Golden Popcorn honors to the movie industry.

  Emcee Sarah Silverman wasn't as dirty as she can sometimes be, but she did make some nice cracks about heiress-on-the-wrong-side-of-the-law Paris Hilton--who was in the audience at the time. Uncomfortable!

  The big winners of the night were Johnny Depp with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - it won Best Movie and he won Best Performance - and Sacha Baron Cohen, who won Best Comedic Performance for Borat and Best Kiss (along with Will Ferrell) for Talladega Nights. The two men celebrated their win by rolling around on stage and making out.

  Other winners include: Jack Nicholson for Best Villain in The Departed, Jaden Smith for Breakthrough Performance with The Pursuit of Happyness, Gerard Butler for Best Fight in 300, Transformers for Best Summer Movie You Haven't Seen Yet, Josh Greenbaum for mtvU Best Filmmaker on Campus with Featured Film: Border Patrol, United 300 for Best Movie Spoof, and Mike Myers for the MTV Generation Award.

• Cage out, Butler in for Untouchables prequel

  Talks for Nicolas Cage to join the cast of Brian De Palma's Untouchables prequel have fallen through.

  As we previously reported, Cage was in negotiations to star as the young Al Capone in The Untouchables: Capone Rising. According to Variety, Cage will not be taking on the project as a result of scheduling issues.

  However, 300 badass Gerard Butler has joined the cast as Jimmy Malone (the Sean Connery part). Do you think he'll show his abs?

• 300 Bloodies the competition

  Okay, so we've known for a while now that 300 was going to be a big hit, but $70 million! That goes beyond big hit. It's the biggest March opening ever and the third-largest R-rated opening in movie history.
  

  So what does this mean for Hollywood? Well, 300 director Zack Snyder is now Hollywood's hottest director. His follow-up, an adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel Watchmen will get a bigger budget and bigger stars attached. The King of the Spartans, Gerard Butler, is now possibly a superstar. He'll land some A-list caliber roles. And the sword and sandal epic? It's back in a big way. Troy 2, Alexander's Return and Gladiator with a Vengeance are all likely being green lit across Tinseltown this week.
