  • Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin to Host Oscars

Hugh Jackman, just a few days ago, refused a repeat performance as Oscar host. Yesterday, Cinema Blend reported that Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. had also been offered the job, but turned it down.

Steve Martin part of Oscars 2009 hosting duoThe report closed on a positive note, citing that at least the choice indicated a push towards a younger, hipper direction. In retrospect, this statement is as funny as it is wrong. Why? Because the Academy announced a short time later that its choices for next year's hosts are ... Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Scratch your head. Raise a furrowed brow. Begin discussions of all the odd-couple pairings in TV and movie history. Producer Bill Mechanic had this to say about the selections, made with co-producer Adam Shankman:

Adam and I, from our first meeting on, knew we wanted an emphasis on comedy. If we err in any one direction, we want to take a show that can feel long and boring at times and make it feel shorter and more fun. The idea of two co-hosts who could move things along just seemed like a great idea.

Alec Baldwin part of Oscars 2009 hosting duoIn its write-up of the story, The Hollywood Reporter cited some nifty Oscar trivia, pointing out that this would not be the first time the telecast featured multiple hosts. The very first Oscar ceremony in 1929 was hosted by Douglas Fairbanks and William C. de Mille. Jerry Lewis and Celeste Holm shared duties in 1957, although they were in different locations (Lewis in Los Angeles, Holm in New York).

In 1972, the Academy chose the trio of Sammy Davis Jr., Helen Hayes, and Alan King, and again went for a trifecta in 1987 with Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, and Paul Hogan.

In response to Tuesday's decision, Martin quipped, "I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin." Baldwin followed by saying, "I don't play the banjo, but I'm thrilled to be hosting the Oscars."

  • Robert Downey Jr. Says His Sherlock Holmes Role was "Really Difficult"

Sherlock HolmesFrom all indications, director Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is not going to feature the contemplative detective that we have come to know through countless films and TV shows, but rather a more visceral version of the character. Actor Robert Downey Jr., who will portray Holmes to Jude Law's Dr. Watson, said that portraying the character was very demanding.

I am kicking ass for two-and-a-half hours, and all this stuff I've been learning for five years [is applied]. Suddenly, I'm co-choreographing with these veteran stunt guys and bad-asses. And I'm in there, having this meat-eating, man-slaughtering competition with these guys, and then, at the same time, playing a very reserved Brit. And that, to me, was a massive education and just a process.

While Downey Jr. said that his role in Holmes was "technically really difficult," it was his Oscar-nominated role as black-faced Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder that really took its toll on him.

Whatever it was, it was just this massive catharsis for some reason. And then, after that, I was like, "Oh well, now that space is empty." All this kind of venom, rage, discomfort, and hiding behind things stuff kind of went away.

  • RZA joins Downey Jr. and Galifianakis in Due Date

The RZAVariety reports that Wu-Tang Clan rapper RZA will star with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in Due Date, the upcoming comedy from director Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School, Starsky & Hutch).

The story involves a soon-to-be father who is in danger of missing his child's birth. In order to make it on time, he has to enlist the help of an underachieving college student, who takes him on a road trip.

The RZA has already starred in and produced music for a number of features, perhaps most notably those of indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. If you haven't yet seen it, check out this hilarious clip from Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes, in which RZA discusses the ills of caffeine addiction with fellow Wu-Tang member GZA and ... Bill Murray.

RZA is also starring in Paul Haggis's upcoming movie The Next Three Days and is scoring Robbie Brenner's Warriors Way.

Due Date also stars Michelle Monaghan and Jamie Foxx and is scheduled for a November 5, 2010 release.

  • New Iron Man 2 Photo Emerges

Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 2Entertainment Weekly has managed to get ahold of a new Iron Man 2 photo, showing Robery Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in Iron Man armor at L.A.'s infamous Randy's Donuts, where a rumored meeting with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury takes place. The photo is a pensive one, a direction that Downey Jr. says Iron Man 2 will follow.

I was convinced that the sequel had to be about Tony Stark's inner journey. After an origin story, some people think that the best part of the character's world has already been blown and doused. I thought: No, that can't be it. There's so much left unresolved.

With Iron Man 2's many villains, not to mention tensions between Tony Stark, Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), it's possible that Stark may find himself clinging to the bottle in the sequel.

    Not to mention, eating donuts.

Foxx and Downey Jr. recently starred in The Soloist together, a drama by Joe Wright about the true story of Nathaniel Ayers (Foxx), a talented musician who becomes homeless after developing schizophrenia, and Steve Lopez (Downey Jr.), a Los Angeles Times columnist who writes about him for the paper.

In Due Date, Downey Jr. will star as a stressed-out father who hitches a ride from a college student (Galifianakis) in the hopes of making it to his child's birth on time. Foxx will play a longtime friend of Downey Jr.'s character who once dated his wife (played by Michelle Monaghan) and has maintained a secret relationship with her.

  • Iron Man 2 Set Visit Reveals Whiplash in Action

Entertainment Tonight got an exclusive Iron Man 2 set visit and revealed a few sneak peeks into the anticipated sequel. The video contains interviews with Robert Downey Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau about the em>Iron Man love triangle, the fitness regimes of the cast, and, most importantly, a few seconds of Mickey Rourke as strong>Whiplash using his whips to destroy a car on the Monaco Grand Prix. The scene is from the initial meeting between Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, and Whiplash, explained Downey Jr.:

Tony Stark has come to Monaco, supposedly to observe the race, but then, as it happens, he is racing in it. This is where he meets his nemesis, and this big kind of action sequence unfolds on the track. This is probably about my favorite thing in the world to do professionally because you get the free adrenaline rush and it's all safe.

  • Brad Pitt May Play Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes Sequel

LeBron James to star in Fantasy Basketball CampWhile Sherlock Holmes won't appear in theaters for another three months, Warner Bros. is counting on it to be a hit — so much so that the studio is already moving ahead with plans for a sequel. Word coming from The Hollywood Reporter says they've already hired writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney, and get this: "Brad Pitt has had discussions with producers to star as Holmes' nemesis Moriarty."

We figure this must be more than a rumor because, truth be told, this isn't the first report that Pitt has been connected to the movie. There is some evidence that Brad may actually have a small cameo in this first film to set up the next. It wouldn't surprise us, as that's the way they are doing it in Hollywood these days.

In any case, we hope this one is true because we are intrigued by the thought of a battle of wits between Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock and Brad Pitt as Moriarty.

  • Iron Man Has an Invisible Friend?
    Robert Downey Jr.

With the amount of remakes going around, it's no surprise that even Steven Spielberg is getting in on the action. Spielberg's working on a remake of the 1950 movie Harvey, which stars James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, a kind man who has an invisible 6-foot rabbit for a friend. In a piece about Spielberg's movie about President Lincoln, Variety reported a brief note that that none other than Robert Downey Jr. is up for the role in Spielberg's "re-imagining"

Spielberg is currently working on Harvey while his Lincoln movie is being re-written by Tony Kushner. Despite Robert Redford working on another Lincoln-related movie, The Conspirator, Spielberg says there's no conflict between the projects:

We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible.

Redford's Lincoln movie concerns a woman involved in a conspiracy to kill the President, while Spielberg's Lincoln movie will follow the President and his anguish over the Civil War.

No word if Spielberg is considering Downey Jr. for the Lincoln role as well, but at the rate Downey Jr. is working anything's possible.

  • Don Cheadle Admits Half of His Iron Man 2 Performance is CGI
Don CheadleThe big surprise at San Diego Comic-Con was the reveal that Don Cheadle as Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes would appear as War Machine in Iron Man 2, but what Cheadle didn't realize is how much CGI would go into his performance, as he revealed to ComicBookResources:

I didn't expect the "Rhodey CGI" character to work more days than me. I didn't think my stuntman would work as many days as I did. But you know, really it's a combination of your work. You're in this motion capture suit, then stuntmen do some stuff, you get to do some stuff, then they don't need any of you and they draw it themselves. In a movie like this, you do your performance and then you hand it off. Then teams of people flesh it out and create what we saw, so you have to trust a lot. But wearing the suit, it's heavy this is true.

Despite his surprise, Cheadle is thrilled to be playing a superhero:

You fantasize about it as a kid and think it would be a lot of fun. Then you're 40 and you're like, "Nah." But I saw the first Iron Man and I just really enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job. They were able to really combine the CGI and the pyrotechnics with some real character stuff going on, so I thought it was a very interesting mix. When I got the call I had to ponder it for a while but ultimately I thought, "Yeah, this is a good thing to do."

With that much CGI being poured into Cheadle's role, it must mean that War Machine plays a very significant part in the movie. Will it be enough for War Machine to get his own movie?

We haven't discussed that. I have no idea. Maybe. Potentially. But, he's an integral part of the Iron Man 2 story, for sure. His relationship with Robert [Downey Jr.] is a big part of the story, what happens with Tony Stark and me.

  • No Brad Pitt in Sherlock Holmes

Despite the recent rumors that the first edit of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes was so lacking a strong antagonist that Brad Pitt would be brought in to play Holmes' nemesis, Moriarty, a studio spokesman said that the movie is coming along just fine without Pitt.

Brad Pitt is not joining the cast of Sherlock Holmes and we're extremely pleased with the production of the film.

The stars of the movie, Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes), Jude Law (Dr. Watson), and Rachel McAdams (Irene Adler) were recently called back to the Holmes set, but the studio insists that this is not a sign of trouble.

In order to complete the movie, we've scheduled a few days on set to shoot a couple of additional scenes, obtain pick-up shots, and perfect some of the visual effects elements, all of which is standard film-making practice.

  • Are there Too Many Villains in Iron Man 2?

Iron Man 2It's a common problem for comic book-movie sequels: too many villains. In Iron Man, director Jon Favreau kept things simple by having Robert Downey Jr. square off with only one major villain, Jeff Bridges. For Iron Man 2, Downey Jr. will face off against Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and possibly fighting with best friend Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) as War Machine, whose appearance was confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Cheadle told MTV that his time in the War Machine armor was "significant" and that there will be tension between himself and Downey Jr.:

We kept asking ourselves: How does that play out with Tony Stark being an independent contractor doing what he wants to do, and Rhodes actually being in the military. There's a real chain of command he has to follow. What's the conflict that creates?

Will featuring so many potential adversaries in Iron Man 2 weigh down the movie? Favreau seems aware of the potential villain overload and doesn't see it as a problem:

We had to walk a fine line. I think you're good for number two. Two seems to be the charm because you got your origin story out of the way. You can add some complexity to it and you have room, because you don't have to tell the origin story, to introduce the characters. When you get to number three, you can get hidebound. You're like a beached whale sometimes because you have so much, you collapse under the weight of the complexity that you've created.

Favreau has suggested that a potential Iron Man 3 will likely focus on arch-nemesis Mandarin. Thus far, no other villains have been named. That ought to keep the "complexity" down.

  • Anne Rice Thinks Robert Downey Jr. Would Make a "Fabulous Vampire Lestat"

Robert Downey Jr.Following up on rumors that Robert Downey Jr. could be tapped to play the vampire Lestat in an adaptation of one of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles novels, BSC contacted the author for her reaction. Although Rice wasn't able to confirm or deny the rumor, she was very upbeat about the casting suggestion:

I have not received official word as to the truth of it yet. But I can say without hesitation that I love Robert Downey Jr. and I think he would make a fabulous Vampire Lestat. He is a major actor, a powerhouse of talent and personality, and he evinces an irrepressible and seductive charm. He would bring great energy and skill to the role. I would love to see this happen. I've loved Robert Downey Jr. ever since I saw him in Restoration years ago, and I thought he was magical and powerful in Iron Man. So I hope the rumors are true.

I've posted on my Facebook "fan" page saying pretty much the same thing. Some are saying he is too old to play the part. This is absolutely not true. He is quite youthful. Besides, Lestat is a man when he is made into a vampire. A twenty year old man in the 18th century is the equivalent of an older man today. Age just shouldn't be an issue here, not with an actor of this scope and charisma. I'm thrilled at the prospect that this rumor might be true.

She also went on to explain that more cinematic adaptations of her Vampire Chronicles novels are possible now because of a recent change in the ownership rights.

  • Robert Downey Jr. in Talks To Play Lestat in The Vampire Chronicles

Robert Downey Jr.Actor Robert Downey Jr. has spent the last decade climbing back into the limelight. Now he seems poised to take over Hollywood, one film franchise at a time. Downey Jr. charmed the world as Tony Stark in Iron Man, a film that defied expectations and turned a B-list hero into a $585-million juggernaut. This Christmas, Downey Jr. hopes to capture lightning in a bottle once more by reinventing Sherlock Holmes. With the latest news, it appears Downey Jr. is going for the hat trick.

An unnamed source has revealed that Universal Pictures is looking to resurrect Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles with none other than Downey Jr. as the vampire Lestat Du Lioncort, a character featured in both previous attempts to adapt Rice's books. It's been 15 years since Tom Cruise donned a blond wig and frilly shirt to play Lestat in Interview With the Vampire, and seven years since Stuart Townsend played a black-leathered Lestat in Queen of the Damned — a critical and commercial failure that seemed to spell the end of the franchise.

No further details were offered about which Rice book will be adapted or whether Lestat will be a featured character or simply the narrator. What is apparent is that Universal Pictures is hoping to cash in on the newly invigorated market for vampires, thanks to the HBO series True Blood and the Twilight phenomenon.

  • The Cowboys & Aliens Script Is In, but Robert Downey Jr. Might Be Out

Cowboys & AliensIt was quite a coup for upstart publisher Platinum Studios to have its Cowboys & Aliens comic book picked up by Dreamworks for adaptation into a feature film. It was an even bigger coup when it was announced that the movie script was being written by the dream team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek), and that Robert Downey Jr. might star in the picture.

However, since that original announcement back in 2007, there has been little to report about this project, except that Downey Jr. might be too busy to star in the film. In April, Orci said:

(Robert's) one of the busiest men on the face of the Earth. If the schedule can line up, we'd absolutely love it.

The screenwriting duo recently updated the project's status, announcing that they — along with writer Damon Lindelof — have completed the screenplay for Cowboys & Aliens, and that now it's just a matter of time. During a group interview last week, Orci said:

We're waiting to hear from the principals. We try not to turn it in until we think it's ready. Obviously, there are always things you can improve.

We're just literally waiting to hear if they hate it or what.

  • Don Cheadle Discusses His Role in Iron Man 2

Actor Don Cheadle's addition to the cast of Iron Man 2 as James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine was one of the most controversial decisions made in pre-production because fans were very fond of the actor who played Rhodey in the first movie, Terrence Howard. During a series of Iron Man 2 roundtable interviews at the San Diego Comic-Con, we asked Cheadle if there was any "bad blood" between the two actors, and he said:

I didn't take a role from Terrence, you know. It's potentially weird between he and them because, you know, that was their deal. But, by the time I came on, he was already not doing the movie.

Terrence has been a friend for a while. I produced Crash and put him in Crash. And I was his friend before that, too, so he knew there was no beef. I didn't snake a part from Terrence. He was cool with me.

When asked about how he prepared himself to play Rhodey, a Marvel Comics character that's been around since the late 70's, Cheadle said:

    Don Cheadle

I went back and looked at a lot of different... there's so many different iterations of James "Rhodey" Rhodes in comic books, so it was hard to go, "Well, I want to be the one in 1982..." It's like, which one am I picking? So...what's the common denominator here? The common denominator was really his friendship with Tony. And, that's what we really tried to track. How is their friendship impacted once Tony comes out and owns, "I am Iron Man," and now I'm in the military and there's a chain-of-command that I have to follow but you're working outside of the military and basically you're a live weapon that can do whatever it wants ... that was the strain, that was the tension that was between their relationship that drives the whole movie, for our characters.

Cheadle said that he was happy to sign a multi-picture deal in order to win the role of Rhodey, but that if he had the opportunity to play any "superhero" he wanted, he would choose the founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama.

I mean, that's a crazy answer, but it's true. Comic books, you know, I really liked Swamp Thing. I loved that comic. And, I loved The Dark Knight. I was a fan of that comic book.

Iron Man 2 also stars Robert Downey Jr., Sam Rockwell, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, and Samuel L. Jackson. There are also rumors that Edward Norton will reprise the role of the Hulk in the film, but Norton has refused to comment.

  • Jon Favreau Discusses the New Characters in Iron Man 2

    Comic Con 2009

Iron ManWriter, actor, director Jon Favreau understands the importance of winning over the core comic book fan base, which is why he debuted footage of both Iron Man films at the San Diego Comic-Con. About the über-zealous fans, Favreau said, "The geeks have inherited the Earth, and that's good news for us."

In a roundtable interview after the Iron Man 2 footage was shown, Favreau explained why Whiplash (played by Mickey Rourke) and War Machine (Don Cheadle) were featured instead of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the original choice for the teaser.

The jury was out on Scarlett for a while ... and when those pictures came out online everybody was like, "Wow." So, I was like, "Okay, that's not the big one," you know? And, with Whiplash, we kind of wanted to show a little bit more of what we're doing with the technology of that character and explain how it fits into the story.

Favreau explained that the character of Whiplash is very much a dark version of Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).

We want to unify the technology of what's going on with Iron Man, what's going on with Whiplash, and ... when ... (Rourke's character is) building Whiplash, it's mirroring in a lot of ways the assembly of the (Iron Man) armor, except under different circumstances. So, it's almost like the shadow version of Tony Stark coming from a different place going through a similar journey as him.

The part of the Iron Man 2 teaser that seemed to most electrify the audience in Hall H was the footage of War Machine, a souped-up, Iron Man-on-steroids hero. Favreau explained:

The thing that's fun about War Machine is it's over-the-top ... Iron Man is the sleek, elegant version where everything is contained under the airframe and War Machine is, you know, the over-the-top, everything hangin' out and ... it creates a little bit of a rivalry between the two of them in that respect. So, we use guns ... there's lots of gun porn in this movie, lets put it that way. And it's not just with that character, there's a lot — we're living in that world and it's the extreme version of the military industrial complex. That's the pool that we spawn from.

Iron Man 2 also stars Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. There are also rumors that either Bruce Banner or the Hulk will make a cameo appearance in the film, but Edward Norton has refused to comment.

  • Sherlock Holmes a "Bromance" Flick?

Sadly, it took a divorce from Madonna to get Guy Ritchie to return to feature filmmaking full-force (we're not counting Swept Away). After the Snatch-esque RocknRolla proved he still had the right stuff, Ritchie jumped right into the director's chair on the big-budget period film, Sherlock Holmes.

The thinking-man's detective might seem like an odd fit for Ritchie, the king of hip, modern gangster movies, but Robert Downey Jr. (Holmes) thinks Ritchie was a perfect choice to direct:

I've been around and Guy really knows how to tell a story. He's done complex storytelling very well, and he's got a great visual sense. And, I think that between that stuff and Jude Law and I really, really becoming very close-knit in our preparation for this, and we've got Rachel McAdams playing the diva adventuress. We just had a great cast and we had a fantastic time shooting it.

McAdams plays the love interest in the movie, but at a recent press event she said that the real romance was between Holmes and Watson. Downey Jr. joked along, saying that Holmes and Watson shared "circumstantial homosexuality." He went on to say:

Before Jude said he was going to do the movie, before he said that he was available, before he said that he either did or didn't want to be courted, we just started talking like two serious actors about what would need to happen to make this work as a piece of straight drama.

We just became really close, really quickly, because we just rolled up our sleeves and started working from jump.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Discusses Stardom and Iron Man 2

    Comic Con 2009

Iron Man 2Actor Robert Downey Jr. burst into the foreign press room after the Iron Man 2 panel at the San Diego Comic-Con with the same cocky confidence that fuels Tony Stark, the character that has propelled Downey Jr. back into the spotlight after too long of an absence.

Despite the ease with which Downey Jr. seemed to handle the adulation of the throngs of people cheering for him in Hall H just minutes before, he admitted that he wasn't entirely comfortable with it:

... when I was a teenager, what I wanted was the experience of walking into a Hall H and having a reaction like that, but I didn't actually want to have to do what it took to maybe earn anywhere near the kind of, you know, pseudo-respect that gets you in that position. So, I don't really quite know what to make of it. I know that it feels good, but I also know that one should exert caution over things that feel good just for a second and then are done.

The first Iron Man had a $100-million opening weekend and went on to gross $585 million worldwide, fueled as much by the mesmerizing performance of Downey Jr. as Stark as by the superheroic CGI effects of the Iron Man armor. Downey Jr. said that the development of the character continues in Iron Man 2 and that there's nothing gratuitous about the action sequences:

    Robert Downey Jr.

Every piece of action that happens in Iron Man 2 is a direct result of a part of a character arc, including probably the biggest sequence in the first hour of the movie ... everything is a result of essentially dysfunction or mistakes made, and those mistakes, when you're Iron Man, and when you're surrounded by the kind of people he is, the ramifications are ginormous.

Though he didn't go into specifics about what sort dysfunction Tony might have, Downey Jr. did say that Stark is "struggling with some sort of contamination of his own system." To comic book fans, this statement seems to inform the inclusion of elements of the famous "Demon in a Bottle" comic book storyline, in which Tony struggles with alcohol addiction. Downey Jr. said that part of Tony's character arc includes the realization that it's okay to ask for help when you're in trouble:

I think that Tony thinks he can handle everything if he just gets enough space and he can figure everything out if he just puts his mind to it. And, that's not the way it works. And, I think that's the big lesson in this film, is that he has to utilize not only all of his own resources but the resources of those close to him and then resources from somewhere he never, ever, ever could've imagined.

Terrence Howard's prophetic utterance of "next time" from Iron Man is the key to Jon Favreau and company's biggest surprise revealed at San Diego Comic-Con. During an Iron Man 2 panel discussion, Favreau told the crowd that War Machine will indeed appear in the movie:

We wanted to use Comic-Con as our venue to have the first images of War Machine come out. There's been talk of whether it was [in the film] or not, and we've been holding back. We haven't talked officially about it. We wanted to show the fans some of that.

For those unfamiliar with the character from the comic books, Favreau explained:

War Machine is another character that's based on the Iron Man technology. James Rhodes, or 'Rhodey,' the character in this film played by Don Cheadle [replacing Howard], he has his own suit. It looks different, different coloring, different weapons on it. War Machine and Iron Man, typically in the books, are at odds. And so, it's Iron Man facing up against someone of equal power and stature using the same technology.

Favreau then showed a 5-minute clip of the movie that featured Cheadle being offered the armor by Tony Stark rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) and ended in an action shot of War Machine firing weapons from his armor.

With Mickey Rourke looking to complicate things as nemesis Whiplash and Scarlett Johansson possibly working to bring down Tony Stark as well, the addition of War Machine is sure to give Robert Downey Jr. a lot to deal with in the sequel. After seeing the footage of War Machine, Downey Jr. was not pleased.

"I can't believe your rig is better than my rig," Downey Jr. said to Cheadle.

"It was a contractual thing," Cheadle responded.

  • Sam Rockwell Says Iron Man 2 Is "Awesome"

    Comic Con

Iron Man 2The stars were out at the San Diego Comic-Con to promote their movies and we were there to talk to the cast of Iron Man 2. In the sequel to Iron Man, Sam Rockwell plays Justin Hammer, Tony Stark's competitor and, ultimately, his nemesis. However, according to Rockwell, the role of Hammer was not so clearly defined when he initially took the role. Rockwell said:

We sort of didn't know where (Justin) was going and we discovered that as we shot the film, which is also kind of exciting. It also takes the pressure off you, because you're like — you know, I got a speech a half-hour before we shot it. I got a speech at lunch time, so I had to learn that and figure that out and use little tricks, you know, but we got it. It's on film, it's on celluloid.

Only minutes before the interview, Rockwell had been on stage in front of more than 6,000 fans for the Iron Man 2 panel. He was somewhat subdued during the panel and did not say very much. When asked if the crowds were intimidating, Rockwell said:

It's a little intimidating, but seeing the trailer is really wild because we've been working on the film — we just wrapped about a week ago, so it felt like a smaller endeavor to us, and then to see that kind of filmmaking up there is pretty awesome, pretty impressive. So, I'm kind of like, "Wow, this is a big deal."

Sam RockwellRockwell couldn't divulge too much about the plot, but he admitted that his character and Mickey Rourke's character, Whiplash, team up against Iron Man. He even called Hammer a "patron of evil." When asked about the process of developing the character of Justin Hammer, Rockwell said that it was not difficult, even though he was only given bits and pieces of the script to work with. He said:

It's kind of like the way we worked on Charlie's Angels, with the exception that we had 17 writers for that and we only had one writer, which was Justin Theroux — thank God, you know — but it's a similar process and yet, because (director Jon Favreau) is an actor who comes from improv it's really actor-friendly, this process. So, it's very character-driven. We didn't get a full script until like a week before shooting. I would get little pieces here and there. But, I would have conversations about it and I would get the scenes and go to my acting coach — a guy named Terry Knickerbocker — and we would work on the material. Even though the material might change ... the homework I had done on it still pays off because it's still the same imaginary circumstances even though (something has) changed. So, it is possible to do preparation for a movie like this, but it's an unconventional way to work.

Iron Man 2 also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Don Cheadle as Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Jon Favreau returns as director.

  • More Iron Man 2 Photos

Iron Man 2USA Today released a gallery of Iron Man 2 photos, days after a photo of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow hit the Interwebs.

The photos sweep through most of the cast, starting with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) on a racetrack after a crash has occurred, Don Cheadle as Col. James Rhodes, another shot of Johansson, and one of Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts.

The cast talks briefly about the expectations for the big-budget sequel, something that Downey Jr. takes very seriously.

We know now [the audience] gets the jokes. They get what we're trying to do with the story. Now we have to tell a better one.

  • Thor Visits the Iron Man 2 Set
    Thor

After the shadow of bankruptcy threatened to dismantle the number one comic book company in America just a decade ago, Marvel Comics has emerged bigger and better than ever, helped in great part by the success of its movie production branch, Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige, President of Production for Marvel Studios, assumed command just as Iron Man was beginning production and today he is in charge of coordinating a whole slate of films in an effort to create a "shared universe" for Marvel characters to inhabit, where cross-overs and team-ups are commonplace, just as they are in the comics.

The precedent for cross-overs has already been set, with Robert Downey Jr. appearing as Tony Stark in both Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Likewise, Samuel L. Jackson signed on to reprise the role of Nick Fury in as many as nine movies. So, who's next? It just might be the Norse thunder god Thor. While discussing Marvel's preparations for the San Diego Comic-Con, Feige dropped the news that Chris Hemsworth, recently signed to play Thor, stopped by the set of Iron Man 2:

Chris Hemsworth came by the (Iron Man 2) set a few weeks ago. There was nobody around, but it was the historic meeting of Thor and Tony Stark. Within a few minutes, the crew was whispering, "There's Thor." Some of them had worked on Star Trek, so they knew who he was, but you could feel the buzz.

The decision to cast Hemsworth, a relative unknown, in the title role of a big-budget effects-driven movie has been questioned by some and criticized by others, but Feige defends the decision:

I think the Marvel way is casting the best actor for the part. It can be somebody relatively new, but it can also be someone like Robert Downey Jr., who you wouldn't necessarily call an unknown.

Kenneth Branagh is signed on to direct Thor, with Natalie Portman cast as Jane Foster, Thor's human love interest, and Tom Hiddleston cast as Loki, Thor's evil half-brother.

  • Iron Man 2 Will Feature a Cockatoo and Other Spoilers

Iron Man 2Entertainment Weekly's coverage of Iron Man 2 did more than just show Scarlett Johansson in her Black Widow costume. It also revealed a few spoilers about the upcoming sequel. WARNING: If you'd like your Iron Man 2 viewing to remain unspoiled, time to stop reading.

Most superhero movie sequels are given the "double villain" treatment and Iron Man 2 is no different. However, this time villains Mickey Rourke as Whiplash and Sam Rockwell as weapons-manufacturing rival Justin Hammer won't be working alone. They'll be joined in their fight against Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) by ... a cockatoo? Rourke explains the need for his new right-hand, er, shoulder, man.

I told [director Jon] Favreau, "I don't want to just play him as a one-dimensional p----." He let me have a cockatoo, who I talk to and get drunk with while I'm making my suit.

Johansson's Black Widow will be complicating matters, specifically for Stark's former assistant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). "The men want it to be, like, 'Ooh, the girls are fighting over Tony,' but it's not as standard as that," explains Paltrow. Downey Jr. agrees that there's a "a weird male catfight fantasy" to contend with between the two women, but this is the Iron Man franchise, as Downey is quick to point out.

We're horny. Not, like, can't-bring-your-kids horny, but just ... horny.

The replacement of Terrence Howard's Colonel Rhodes with Don Cheadle will also be addressed "in one exchange," says Cheadle. "We're not trying to fool people."

Considering the pressure put on a sequel whose predecessor was as successful as Iron Man, there are likely plenty more suprises in store. No one is more aware of that, however, than Downey Jr.

There are a lot more invisible eyes on us now. People are going to be more critical. That's their prerogative.... In a way, there's no way to win, except to win. Big.

  • Daniel Radcliffe Can't Wait for Sherlock Holmes

Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes isn't due in theaters until December 25, but fans are already excited about the movie. Count Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's Daniel Radcliffe among them. He told Entertainment Weekly that Holmes is the movie he's "most looking forward to seeing" this year.

Apparently Radcliffe is a "huge fan" of the British Sherlock Holmes TV show starring Jeremy Brett. He says Brett's Holmes is a great example of playing "an over-the-top character without ever being over-the-top himself." We hope Radcliffe knows that Robert Downey Jr. is Holmes this time around.

It's easy to be swept up into Radcliffe's enthusiasm after watching the latest trailer for Sherlock Holmes. Even a fickle New York audience applauded it. Check it out below:

  • No Action For Jackson in Iron Man 2
    Samuel L. Jackson

With Samuel L. Jackson signed on to play S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury for 9 Marvel movies, it's inevitable that Jackson will get into some action, possibly even a movie all his own. Iron Man 2 is the next Marvel movie that Jackson will appear in, but he told MTV not to expect any action:

Not this time, not yet. We still haven't moved Nick Fury into the bad-ass zone. He's still just kind of a talker.

Jackson's scenes were limited to appearing with Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson. However, the "bad-ass zone" may not be far away. When asked if Fury might be unleashed in The Avengers, Jackson replied:

    Looking forward to that, yeah.

  • Stan Lee More Than a Cameo in Iron Man 2

Stan Lee has made an appearance in most of the Marvel movies based on comics he created, but typically they are blink-and-miss cameos such as "Milwaukee Man Drinking from a Bottle" in The Incredible Hulk or "Man Dodging Debris" in Spider-Man 2. Iron Man 2 will see Lee step up his game by playing CNN Host Larry King.

Sources have split on what Lee's scene entails. Lee's scene could have him, as King, interviewing Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) about his new, "black" Iron Man suit. Or, as told to Collider, Lee will be asking Downey Jr. when he will appear on the Larry King show. Perhaps they are both right, which would double the usual Lee screen time.

Iron Man 2's May 7, 2010, will reveal the truth, but until then, enjoy Lee's cameos of old in the video below:

All my scenes [in Iron Man 2] are with Robert Downey Jr. and one other actor. I don't know how much I can say. We were [improvising] and it came to me (to say a line) … (Later) Robert said, "Can we just stop a second and give Olivia a round of applause. She is rocking it." That made me feel good.

  • What Happened to Sherlock Holmes with Will Ferrell and Sasha Baron Cohen?

Will FerrellAround the same time that Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes was being prepped for production, another Sherlock Holmes was announced. Instead of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law playing Holmes and Watson, it would feature Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen as the famous duo in the first comedic version of Holmes since Michael Caine in 1988's Without a Clue.

Ritchie's Sherlock is opening December 25. However, the Ferrell-Cohen version seems to have disappeared. Ferrell explained the situation to HollywoodOutbreak:

We're trying to develop [Sherlock Holmes]. We've got a script written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder). I just met with Sacha three weeks ago, we're kinda talking about it some more. It's just a question of the Robert Downey Jr. one that they just shot, which I think comes out during Christmas. I think everyone just wants to see ... well, that one's probably going to be, you know, a hit kind of franchise, and whether that is something you want to go up against or would it inform the audience to allow for us to do a comedy version or would it just feel like, "Oh we're just trying to copy them." Even though, I think, we wrote our script before they did. But yeah, we're thinking about it.

This follows a string of bad luck for Ferrell, whose Land of the Lost bombed at the box office while the possibility of an Anchorman sequel recently became doubtful at best.

  • Jon Favreau Talks Iron Man 2, First Look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash

Iron Man 2USA Today has posted a new image of Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2 as the Russian villain Ivan Vanko, a.k.a. Whiplash. They also spoke with director Jon Favreau about the character, who sports a suit similar to the one worn by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Favreau was willing to divulge a few details, but wanted to leave a few surprises for the audience:

The technologies are definitely related. That's part of the core theme of the film ... [Vanko] has has constructed his own version of a suit ... We like to play into and against the expectations that people might have, so we mixed it up a bit.

Whiplash's unique contributions to the suit include a pair of whips (of course).

The article confirms that the image of Rourke is set at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. Now that we've seen Rourke, we can't wait to hear him, as he's been brushing up on his Russian to lend his character some authenticity.

  • Marvel's Kevin Feige Updates The Avengers, Thor, Ant-Man and More

MarvelMarvel President of Production Kevin Feige has been very busy lately speaking about the upcoming slate of movies Marvel has in production, from The Avengers to Thor and even Ant-Man, giving plenty of updates about each one.

While he could not confirm another Incredible Hulk movie, Feige did confirm that Hulk will appear in The Avengers:

Now at least we can talk about Hulk being onscreen and Hulk being in a movie. It will have been four years since he was in a movie by that point. By 2012, I'd like to see him in it. We're just starting the story. I was on the phone with [Avengers screenwriter] Zak Penn this morning. He's coming in next week and he's going to work on the outline this summer. It's so intertwined with what we're doing before it. I almost wanted to get done with production on Iron Man 2, and the scripts to Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America well underway, before we even started The Avengers.

With many of the movies being intertwined, this means that several characters will make appearances in different movies, in particular Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Feige explained that he hopes to provide fans with a comic book experience, where characters from other books show up unexpectedly.

Feige gave an update on Thor confirming that Donald Blake, Thor's human alter ego, will not appear in Thor, which will take place on both Earth and Asgard. Meanwhile, The First Avenger: Captain America will "primarily" be a period piece taking place during World War II, with an appearance by Cap's sidekick Bucky "a safe bet."

As for casting Captain America, Feige clearly hasn't made a decision:

There are only a handful of stars that mean anything here, much less overseas. I do think that will be a factor in it. As long as we have the freedom to cast the best actor for the part. Whether it's an actor who's been a great actor, but hasn't starred in marquee action movies before like Robert Downey, or somebody that came out of Australia that we've never heard.

As for the Ant-Man adaptation that Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright is working on, Feige said:

I want to make Ant-Man one of these days. I think that'll be surprising and funny. I love Edgar Wright. What he likes about it is that when he says he's doing Ant-Man, people go, 'Ant-Man? What the hell is that?' I think that's funny.

Ant-Man isn't the only movie Feige hopes to make post-Avengers, he's also excited about Doctor Strange:

I think Doctor Strange would kick ass. I think we've done very well at this street-level superhero aspect of the Marvel Universe. I think with Thor, you'll see us cracking into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe in a very good way that's never been done before in our movies. I'd love to get into that supernatural element.

Marvel and Feige clearly have a lot on the horizon. However, ultimately, it's The Avengers that Feige is most excited about:

I think The Avengers is going to have it's own vibe. It'll have a different tone than the other Marvel movies. It is about saving the world, because there's no other reason for characters that powerful to band together. I think the scope and the scale will feel like a much bigger thing.

Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, while Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America are due May 20 and July 22 of 2011, respectively. The Avengers should open May 4, 2012.

  • Mickey Rourke Learned Russian for Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2Mickey Rourke's career has experienced a resurgence following his turn in Sin City and his Oscar-nominated performance as a charismatic but troubled has-been wrester in Darren Aronofksy's The Wrestler. Now, Rourke will appear as the nemesis of Tony "Iron Man" Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Rourke talked about his upcoming role as the villain in Iron Man 2. Rourke plays the heavily tattooed Russian Ivan, also known as Whiplash. In preparation, Rourke took a stab at learning a little of his character's native tongue:

I decided to do half my role in Russian, and that's hard because the Russian language doesn't roll off the English-speaking tongue very easily. I spent three hours a day with a teacher, and after two weeks I know four sentences! Let me see, it's sort of like ... "Yezzamee menya ... Yezzamee manya obott ... Er, nemaboootty menya..." It means, "If someone kills me, don't wake me up, because I'd rather be dead than live in your world."

We can't wait to see what Rourke looks and sounds like dishing out those lines.

  • Story and Casting Updates for Thor

AvatarThor is really starting to fill out its ensemble, with Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as his evil half-brother Loki, and Kenneth Branagh-favorite Brian Blessed as their father Odin.

What concerns comic fans, however, is not so much the casting but instead how Branagh and company plan on handling Thor's odd position as both superhero and Norse god. With Thor looking to be released only a year prior to The Avengers, will Thor's integration into a team of heroes seem natural or will Thor stand out among his more human counterparts like Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man? Nothing to worry about, Thor screenwriter Ashley Miller told CineFOOLS:

Thor's powers are godly, yes. And his zip code is a little different. But at the end of the day, he's a man. In the comics, Odin sends him to Earth because he's not perfect. He's brash, arrogant. Even over-confident. We all know that guy -- some of us have even been that guy. Our script is very firmly rooted in the Marvel film world. We were constantly looking for ways to connect Thor to the other movies and heroes, even if they were simply in passing.

Director Branagh is also interested in the story, reading tons of Thor comics and taking advice from several Marvel writers and editors. With such in-depth research, clearly Branagh has some favorite storylines? He told MTV:

I think that [Thor stories] go through golden patches and purple patches and everyone has personal favorites. The recent runs have been marvelous. The J. Michael Straczynski run has been a tremendous achievement. But I’ve also been reading way back, reading classic, vintage runs as well. There are many Thors and many accounts of the stories across nearly 50 years of the comics. We look to raid from the best.

So really, the story could come from anywhere in Thor's 45-year history. That ought to satisfy fans.

  • Terminator Salvation Producer Talks Sherlock Holmes and Lara Croft Prequel

At the US premiere of Terminator Salvation, About.com interviewed producer Dan Lin, who talked about, among other things, a couple of his upcoming projects. Lin is producing Sherlock Holmes -- directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law -- and a prequel to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which is not yet in production and has no one attached to it.

Here's what he had to say about Sherlock Holmes:

The tone is period Butch and Sundance. It's almost like a buddy cop movie set in the period world. Like Butch and Sundance, it's action-oriented, but there's definitely comedy to it. It's really about these two guys, Sherlock and Watson, who basically they're best friends and there's an incident that sets them apart and they have to come back together at the end of the movie.

Sherlock Holmes reimagined as Butch Cassidy? Interesting notion.

Lin then gave some details about the Lara Croft project, which will be a prequel to the other two movies.

Really excited -- it's a great origin story that we're going to tell. A very character-oriented, I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies ... I would say it's like Terminator -- character-driven action. I think for me the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character.

The movie will also require a re-casting, since it involves a Lara Croft significantly younger than Angelina Jolie.

You can view the interview in its entirety here.

  • Catfight on Iron Man 2 Set -- PLUS a Climactic Fight Scene!

Iron Man 2Rumors say that Scarlett "Black Widow" Johansson and Gwyneth "Pepper Potts" Paltrow aren't playing nice together on the set of Iron Man 2.

While admittedly, you can't believe everything the British papers say -- especially the Sun -- the paper reports that Paltrow feels her on-set rival is hogging the limelight and now sparks are flying between the two female leads.

    According to their unnamed source...

Gwyneth has become very frustrated with Scarlett. They come from different worlds and have completely different styles. Gwyneth has found Scarlett very demanding of the attention of the crew. It's not a happy set.

The insider went on to say that all this stems from jealousy over the fact that Scarlett gets to wear tight leather outfits and carry guns, while Gwyneth is relegated to business suits and office scenes. Oh the drama!

Almost as a side note, the article mentions that Gwyneth will get her chance for action in movie's the climactic battle scene...

The most spectacular sequence in the movie is a huge fight between Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke, and she (Paltrow) is going to be right in the thick of things. That section of the movie is going to be three straight weeks of filming in June. It is by far the most expensive sequence, the centrepiece of the whole project.

Now that's the kind of drama we want to see!

  • Robert Downey Jr. in First Trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes

The first trailer for Sherlock Holmes is now up on the web. And it looks like the normally mild-mannered sleuth is now a raging action hero and ladies' man. We were wondering how Robert Downey Jr. would look in a deerstalker, but there is nary a deerstalker to be found in this preview. There is, however, Mr. Downey engaging in some fisticuffs and some Bond-esque repartee.

This latest adaptation of the classic mystery series stars Downey as the famous detective and Jude Law as his compatriot, Dr. John Watson. The story is based on the yet-to-be-published comic book created by producer Lionel Wigram, which was in turn based -- very loosely, it appears -- on the original characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. No surprise, this movie is directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and is set for a Christmas Day release, which should ensure a good audience.

Warner Bros. has also posted production photos at the movie's official site.

  • Rockwell's Hammer in Iron Man 2 is Not the Comic Version

Iron Man 2Sam Rockwell (Choke) will be portraying Justin Hammer, one of the classic Iron Man rogues in next summer's Iron Man 2, but don't expect to see the Marvel Comics version of the character. According to Rockwell, the character was updated for the movie:

They wanted to go with a rival for Tony Stark who is closer to his age, and make him American

When MTV showed Rockwell a copy of Iron Man #240 featuring Hammer, Rockwell joked:

That looks like Jeremy Irons. I guess they couldn't get Jeremy Irons for it.

Robert Downey Jr. returns in the title role, with Gwyneth Paltrow once again portraying Tony Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts, and Samuel L. Jackson resuming his role as Nick Fury. Iron Man 2 also stars Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Mickey Rourke as Whiplash.

Robert Downey Jr.USA Today has the exclusive first official photo from Iron Man 2. It shows "out-of-the-closet" superhero Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, sitting at his high-tech workstation contemplating his next armored adventure.

Is it just me, or does Robert Downey Jr. look a little like a wax mannequin from Madam Tussaud's?

If you look closely, you can see four of his alter-egos in the blurry background. Mark I-IV are there, but unfortunately, no War Machine armor can be seen. More than likely, that suit will be kept under wraps as long as possible to build anticipation among the fanboys. But mark our words, the heavily armed armor will make its live-action debut in this movie. Otherwise, side-kick Don Cheadle will be naked part of the time!

This super sequel to last summer's blockbuster is sure to be a huge hit, especially with director Jon Favreau's cutting edge connection to comic book movie fans. He's a hit on Twitter -- enthusiastically tweeting his daily experiences on the set.

  • Terrence Howard Finally Discusses Iron Man 2 Firing and other Iron Man News

Terrence HowardWhen Iron Man actor Terrence Howard was surprisingly replaced by Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2, money was rumored to be the problem. With Iron Man 2 already shooting, Howard spoke with Parade about what really happened:

Marvel made a choice, and it was a very, very bad choice. They didn't keep their word. They didn't honor my contract. They produced a great bounty with the first one but they put it all in the storehouse and you were not allowed in. They did the same thing with Gwyneth Paltrow, from what I've been told. They did it with almost everyone except Robert Downey [Jr.]. One of the things that actors need to learn to do is always stick together, one for all and all for one.

Howard has also seen the script for Iron Man 2 but won't elaborate:

I've seen the script, I know what's going to happen, but I'm not revealing anything. I believe in karma. When someone does something wrong, you don't have to get them back. Everything right will return the favor for you.

Perhaps karma will have Howard replace Cheadle for Iron Man 3 where Mandarin is rumored to be the villain, perhaps played by Iron Man actor Faran Tahir. Tahir won't be in Iron Man 2, but Clark Gregg (returning as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson) and Kate Mara (in an unknown role) will be, having been recently added to the cast.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Opens Up About Iron Man 2

Robert Downey Jr.Anticipation is high for the follow-up to Jon Favreau's Iron Man (2008), with new rumors circulating about the sequel's villains, script and cast on a daily basis. Now, we finally have some concrete information, direct from the source.

In a recent interview, Robert Downey Jr., who plays the billionaire playboy-turned-superhero Tony Stark, opened up the Iron Man 2 vault to share some juicy bits of information with his fans.

Downey Jr. confirmed that there will be a new suit of Iron Man armor, saying:

Everything has been improved. Everything is ergonomic and the story is incredibly risky and artistic for a big genre movie.

When asked about filming with Mickey Rourke, Downey Jr. admitted that they hadn't yet filmed any scenes together, but that he had seen Rourke's dailies:

I've seen his stuff and it is literally remarkable. Literally remarkable. He's so good. And he's formidable and he's very much reminding me of that kind of charming, confident guy that we know.

Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Tony Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts with Samuel L. Jackson resuming his role as Nick Fury. Iron Man 2 also stars Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer.

  • Gary Oldman on the Set of Iron Man 2

Gary OldmanInsider sources on the Iron Man 2 set recently reported a visit by Garry Shandling, the hilarious actor and comedian of It's Garry Shandling's Show and the satirical late night talk show spoof, The Larry Sanders Show. It has been rumored that Shandling will appear as Senator Stern, the character in the X-Men mythos who uses his political power to champion the Mutant Registration Act.

Now, according to IESB, Gary Oldman, the chameleonic actor who became famous playing gruesome villains in True Romance, The Professional and The Fifth Element, and who recently portrayed Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight, has been spotted on the set. There was no speculation about what character (if any) Oldman will portray or how long he will be on set, especially considering the fact that he is currently filming The Book of Eli.

This wouldn't be the first time that an actor appearing in a major motion picture based upon a character from one of the "big two" comic book companies made the leap to a film based on a character from the competition. James Marsden portrayed Marvel Comics' Cyclops in all three X-Men films and then appeared in DC Comics' Superman Returns as Lois Lane's love interest.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Pumping Up for Iron Man 2

Actor Robert Downey Jr. has been working non-stop since he played Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008). His hilarious portrayal of Kirk Lazarus, an actor who undergoes a skin pigmentation-altering procedure to “get into character” in Tropic Thunder (2008), was followed with a performance as a journalist in The Soloist (2009), and he recently completed filming for Guy Ritchie’s latest endeavor, Sherlock Holmes, due in theaters this December.

While Downey Jr.’s portrayal of the world’s greatest detective (sorry, Batman) in Sherlock Holmes is eagerly anticipated, what fans are really curious about is his return to the role that brought him his most recent wave of fame. Iron Man was the 2nd-highest grossing film of 2008 and helped further legitimize superhero films as a distinct movie genre capable of both financial and critical success.

In a recent interview with ET!,

    Downey Jr. said:

"It's one thing to say you're Iron Man, it's another thing to be fully ready to do that."

When asked if he would be in shape to play a superhero after losing weight to play the gaunt Sherlock Holmes, Downey Jr. replied:

"I'm on Beefcake Charlie status. I've got to not be the skinny Brit anymore. I have to be the Tony that you know and may have loved."

Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Tony Stark’s assistant, Pepper Potts with Samuel L. Jackson resuming his role as Nick Fury. Iron Man 2 also stars Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer.

  • Iron Man 2 Casting Confirmed for Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett JohassonDeadline Hollywood has supplied the scoop and final word regarding Iron Man 2 casting rumors that have been floating around of late.

First off, Mickey Rourke, fresh from his Oscar-nominated popularity, has finally signed on to play an unknown Russian antagonist, which every geek knows is probably a villain called Whiplash. He'll be in good company as the main baddie against fellow "comeback kid" actor Robert Downey Jr. in the title role.

Next, we have word that Scarlett Johansson will indeed be replacing Emily Blunt in the role of Black Widow, the Russian spy and possible new love interest for Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. This also may be the reason why Gwyneth Paltrow has not yet been alerted to her involvement in the sequel, or the lack thereof.

Incidentally, Johansson finished last in our user poll about who should play Black Widow.

  • Mark Strong Ruins the End of Sherlock Holmes

Can't anyone keep a secret anymore? Sherlock Holmes actor Mark Strong can't, that's for sure. Strong told TotalFilm the ending of the upcoming Guy Ritchie-directed movie:

There's a fantastic sequence where we duel to the death on a half-built Tower Bridge. It's a perfect way to end the movie, Robert [Downey, Jr.] and I hammering seven bells out of each other on top of this swinging bridge with Victorian London as a backdrop. It's going to be amazing.

You know what's amazing, Mark? Keeping a secret.

  • The Villain in Iron Man 2 is... Alcohol

Iron Man 2A major plot point of Iron Man 2 has been leaked out by the movie's set designer in an interview with NPR. The spoiler reveals the true antagonist of the sequel: booze.

Designer J. Michael Riva told radio listeners that the first thing he had to build for the set was a toilet for Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, to puke into.

While that might not mean anything to some, comic book readers know that praying to the porcelain god is confirmation of the major villain in Tony's life. Alcoholism has played a large part in the Iron Man storyline since the beginning, and this leak lets us know that addiction will be a certain struggle in the next movie.

In fact, a lot of fans were disappointed that alcoholism wasn't addressed in the first movie, but this latest leak lets us know that producers are staying true to the source material and making addiction the struggle for our hero in the second.

  • Rourke Not Playing Crimson Dynamo in Iron Man 2

MTV recently spoke to Robert Downey, Jr. on the Sherlock Holmes set about the upcoming Iron Man 2, and clarified the role that Mickey Rourke will play, should he accept Marvel's lowball offer. When Rourke as Iron Man villain Crimson Dynamo is mentioned, Downey Jr. says, "That's actually incorrect."

Speculation had Rourke playing either Crimson Dynamo or Whiplash, and when Downey Jr. was asked if Rourke was playing Whiplash instead, Downey retorted, "I can neither confirm nor deny. Or maybe it's some semblance of both."

As to who the villain will be, Downey Jr. had this to say: "The enemy comes from within," he jokes, then straightens up. "Here's what I would say. It's one thing to say you're Iron Man, it's another thing to understand what it is to hold that responsibility. And if that sounds like a familiar theme, trust me, it's not. This film is three times more fun and strange."

  • Robert Downey Jr. is the Antidote to Brad Pitt

Robert Downey Jr.Could Brad and Angie stop complaining about how hard it is to be famous? Could we all stop pretending that Benjamin Button deserves all these accolades? (See our review.)

Thankfully we have one Robert Downey Jr. to serve as a refreshing, rehabbed antidote to Brangelina. Downey participated in a Newsweek Oscar roundtable with Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway, Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella, and Sally Hawkins. Pitt does his usual being-me-is-so-hard-I-have-no-privacy-I-just-get-to-impregnate-Angelina thing, says he's never Googled himself, and says he doesn't even know how to use a computer (who is he, John McCain?).

The others pretty much confer with him, except for Downey who admits to Googling himself and says, "Oh, I love all that s*** personally. Sorry. I just love it. Because it's a hoot. Some people overstate their support, like they know you. Other people are busy doing something else and just want to go on this chat site and say some despicable character assassination, which I honestly think they kind of nailed it. I do have that shortcoming. It's really fun."

Downey's refreshing honesty continues later in the roundtable when he says, "Lately for me, the biggest, most commercial projects that I've done are the most creatively satisfying, the most collaborative and the ones that the audiences respond to."

We love a good indie as much of the next person, but after losing hours of our life to some of this year's dismal wannabe-prestige pics (you know who you are), it's nice to hear that Downey doesn't take it, or himself, as seriously as some of his cohorts. This bodes well for Iron Man 2.

  • Rockwell Confirms Corporate Villain Role in Iron Man 2

MTV got in a quick star-on-the-street interview with Sam Rockwell, where he confirmed earlier reports that he will be playing corporate villain Justin Hammer, rival and business badguy to Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

    Said Sam:

Yeah, he's a rival. He takes over all the weapons stuff after Tony's left. I don't know if he takes over Stark Industries. I'm not really sure yet. He's a money dude. That's about all I can say.

Incidentally, this won't be the first run-in that Rockwell has had with the armored avenger. The versatile actor was almost picked for the part of Tony Stark in the original movie, and his current girlfriend Leslie Bibb played reporter (and Stark's one-night-stand) Christine Everheart.

Rockwell also added that he expects to be shooting at Manhattan Beach by mid-April.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Talks Iron Man 2 and Avengers Movie

Iron Man 2MTV caught up with Robert Downey Jr. on the London set of Sherlock Holmes and talked about the upcoming Iron Man 2 and Avengers movies.

According to Downey, Iron Man 2 is going to focus on the man "beneath the armor" and what Tony Stark does with his new responsibility as the iron-clad hero. In the sequel, Downey will likely get to play Tony Stark's darker side, which, in Stark's case, probably means alcoholism. Downey added: "I think we could have more excitement. We could use a love triangle or two." Looks like he'll get both. A recent casting notice calls for a female lead who is "beautiful, speaks several languages fluently and is equally proficient in martial arts" and "30s, Eastern European, brilliant, gritty" male lead. Crimson Dynamo and Black Widow perhaps?

Once Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Marvel will release Thor (July 16, 2010) and First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011) next before Avengers hits theaters in July of 2011. Downey is excited, if cautious. "Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants, it warrants much further discussion."

And Marvel is looking for Avengers to be huge. "That means if we don't get it right, it's really going to suck," says Downey. "It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel's best and brightest, because it's the hardest thing to get right. It's tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters."

  • Robert Downey Jr. in blackface: It's laffensive!!!

Downey Jr. in blackfaceBlackface technology has certainly come a long way since comedians first employed the offensive practice in the cartoonishly racist "minstrel shows" of the early 1900s. Witness EW.com's preview of Tropic ThunderBen Stiller's new comedy about a film crew shooting the most expensive Vietnam movie ever, which features the first-ever image from the film. Standing in between stars Jack Black and Stiller is a fairly innocuous-looking African-American man; look closer, though, and you'll discover it's none other than Robert Downey Jr.

Funny? Offensive? Either way, you have to admit it's a darn good makeup job.

  • Downey Jr. game for an Avengers flick

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony StarkOn the heels of Robert Downey Jr.'s appearance at Comic-Con, I asked the Iron Man star if he'd be interested in a possible Avengers movie.

"Oh yeah," he joked. "I'd probably be the best deal on the lot."

Indeed, bringing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the rest of the Avengers crew together would be an expensive proposition -- and quite logistical challenge, too.

Marvel exec Kevin Feige didn't seem too worried when I asked him about the difficulty of assembling the Avengers. "Truth is, if we can do an X-Men film with 15-20 big name actors and get them all scheduled, you can do (Avengers)," said Feige. "It can be done."

Yesterday director Jon Favreau became the runaway hit of Comic-Con when he debuted some dazzling footage from Iron Man.
