  • G.I. Joe Actors Ready for Sequel

G.I. JoeSure, it had cheesy dialogue and ridiculous-looking effects, but G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's $100-million opening weekend was enough for Paramount to grant director Stephen Sommers and company another "Go, Joe!"

The cast is ready to return, with Dennis Quaid telling io9:

Yeah if they do one, I'm there.

And Byung-hun Lee, who played Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe, is reportedly starting work on the sequel at the end of the year according to a Korean news source.

Top star Lee Byeong-Heon is in the new Hollywood film, G.I. Joe 2!

He will be starting the filming by the end of this year and has been contracted for the 3rd sequel, also!

No official word on whether Sommers is retuning for the sequel, though he has said that he would shoot his live-action Tarzan movie next "unless the studio wants a G.I. Joe sequel."

What will go down in G.I. Joe 2? Well, screenwriter Stuart Beattie has already given some hints.

  • G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Has Great "Toys"

Director Stephen Sommers' live-action adaptation of the toy, comic book, and cartoon property G.I. Joe is only a day away, and in anticipation MTV has strung together this series of clips that highlight the great "toys" that the Joes use in their battle against Cobra, specifically, the Delta 6 Accelerator Suit.

This comes right after a viral video was released showing a Joe skateboarding in a Delta 6 Accelerator Suit.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra stars Dennis Quaid as Hawk, Channing Tatum as Duke, Sienna Miller as Baroness, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander.

  • Parent Advocacy Group Targets G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Just days before Lorenzo di Bonaventura's movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is set to debut nationwide, a parent advocacy group has stepped forward to ask that the movie industry stop targeting children in ad campaigns.

The group, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), reportedly sent a petition to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) citing thousands of instances of violent advertisements for PG-13 movies during children's programming.

G.I. Joe is not the only movie mentioned in the petition, however. Other films that CCFC claims have been advertised to children under thirteen years old include Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, all of this summer's biggest blockbusters. Diane Levin of CCFC said in a statement:

It makes it harder for parents to deny requests to see the film when children are subjected to a steady stream of ads telling them that that products linked to the film are especially for them.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is directed by Stephen Sommers and stars Dennis Quaid as Hawk, Channing Tatum as Duke, Sienna Miller as Baroness, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander.

  • Stephen Sommers Talks G.I. Joe Sequel
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Though Paramount won't be having press screenings for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, usually a bad sign for a movie, the lucky few who have seen it reviewed it favorably. Director Stephen Sommers is already "very excited" about a sequel, and told UGO that while he has a live-action Tarzan project lined up, what he really wants is to work on another G.I. Joe:

I'm ready to work with this cast again and do the sequel. My next project will be Tarzan unless the studio wants a G.I. Joe sequel. Then that comes first. We've got some ideas on where we could take this thing that are ready to go.

Sommers reiterated his sequel hopes to SuperheroHype, saying that if G.I. Joe 2 is desired by the studio he'll "take August off, but then sure, I'm right back in there."

And what does Sommers have in mind for the sequel?

Well, the mythology of it, [G.I. Joe comic book author] Larry Hama, who gave me the comic books, gave me a lot of the mythology of it that there's so much more to tell just about these characters and where their relationships go. I think that even though this movie has a beginning, a middle and an end, you still want to know what's going to happen to them. You want to know more about these characters which is the best thing about it. As great as the action is and all the special effects, I think people really fall in love with these characters. The key is that I have a lot of ideas and there's a G.I. Joe mythology. If we get to do a sequel, there's a lot more to tell.

  • New Clip and Trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Reaction to the myriad of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra trailers released so far could be described as either excited or fearful. Early critical reviews have been supportive, and the below trailer capitalizes off of it, specifically using a review from Harry Knowles at AICN and some new footage to highlight the movie.

Even the cynics would have to agree that G.I. Joe poses a tricky adaptation, considering the wealth of back story that several comics books and a TV show have created. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says those difficulties just needed to be simplified.

There are 32 Joes in the comic book, and you couldn't make a movie with 32 characters. So the first challenge is to whittle down the number of characters to where you could do an effective job at portraying them — in my experience that's somewhere between six and ten. Second, when you choose your characters and the relationships between them are so extensive, you have to really think about the evolution of these relationships through the movie and the plot has to then serve those.

So far audiences really like the fact that we spent a lot of time with all these characters and they've given us a good pat on the back for it.

The latest clip of the movie highlights some of the character interaction that di Bonaventura mentioned, but also could be an example of why some fans are leery of the movie with its forced banter between Marlon Wayans and Rachel Nichols:

One small clip can't be indicative of the whole movie, and as LatinoReview points out in their latest review, the movie is called G.I. Joe, so audiences should expect some of the dialogue "is going to be corny." With clips like this one, fans should take comfort in director Stephen Sommers's explanation of the Paris chase sequence, which makes the movie look like it is in assured hands and capable of being a fun and satisfying summer blockbuster.

  • Two More G.I. Joe Clips

Two brand new clips for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra are now online thanks, in part, to director Stephen Sommers and his new website, which has the first clip. No word on whether this is the sequence where Sienna Miller burned her chest, but at least she won't have to worry about explosions until the sequel, which she and the rest of the cast are signed on for.

The second clip (below) also includes the Paris chase sequence, which has been shown in nearly every preview available, But how the two clips work together is anyone's guess, considering they both include Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) uttering the line "he never gives up."

  • Signs that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra May Not Be Terrible?

G.I. JoeThe accelerator suits depicted in the G.I. Joe trailer ruffled the feathers of many fans, and Paramount's hesitation to include new footage in subsequent trailers seemed to cement the feeling that the movie had little to offer — that is, until reviews arrived calling off the "bomb squad."

Two attendees at a G.I. Joe screening wrote in to AICN, calling the movie "cheesy, light-hearted fun", and agreeing that "this movie delivers [action]." (Both also said the acting is pretty sub-par, particularly Channing Tatum as Duke.)

Nothing conclusive about two attendees at a screening, but they weren't alone. Collider called the movie "the cartoon come to life", and again praised the action scenes. They even had kind words for those controversial suits:

The accelerator suits were well used in the movie. Many, myself included, thought they'd be overdone and/or incredibly stupid, but that isn't the case. They were just used in the Paris action scene and provided some good moments.

Good news when the most that's been offered by Paramount is another TV spot that merely combines all the footage that came before it. Let's hope director Stephen Sommers and company are keeping the surprises for the theater.

  • New Photos and TV Spot for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Paramount has released several new photos from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Unfortunately, the photos don't reveal much new footage, which is consistent with the studio's approach to other recent trailers and photos of the movie.

Fans awaiting the movie's August 7 opening have found Paramount's reluctance to show new footage frustrating, such as the choice to only reveal Cobra Commander's face for a second and keeping the look of Destro's silver mask mostly secret. Hopefully it's a sign of faith that director Stephen Sommers will keep the surprises in the movie theater. Hopefully.

Even the most recent TV spot is low on new footage, though it does show Scarlett (Rachel Nichols) use her weapon of choice, the crossbow. Watch it below:

  • New G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Poster and Other News

G.I. Joe: Rise of the CobraLast month, the international poster for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra used a fire-and-ice color scheme that said "the Joes are cool and calculated agents of the government" while Cobra is "hot, sexy and dangerous."

The latest poster levels the playing field, putting all the character in the same blue tint but changing their locations. The Cobra characters look like they're living in an aquarium while the Joes tower over France with sweet metal abs on top of their accelerator suits. Oui oui, those are some real American heroes.

In other G.I. Joe-related news, Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has come to the defense of director Stephen Sommers, who was reportedly fired from G.I. Joe after some poor test screenings. The story turned out to be false, and Gordon-Levitt shared nothing but positive accolades about Sommers to MTV:

Stephen Sommers is like a big kid. We’d get to set every day and it was like playing with toys except the toys are bigger. No one was more excited about the big toys than he was. He talks real fast and real loud and gets really excited. Who else should direct G.I. Joe but a big kid who loves big toys?

Not everyone would agree. An audience member from a March screening wrote an early review for SlashFilm, saying Paramount should be "embarrassed" by the movie. The reviewer goes on to say that the very popular character of Snake Eyes (Ray Park) is "the best part of the movie." Knowing that could be half the battle to getting G.I. Joe fans into theaters August 7.

  • Stephen Sommers Not Fired from G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

G.I. JoeRumors started circulating when LatinoReview reported that G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers was locked out of the editing room by a Paramount executive after a screening went poorly.

However, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura later responded to the report to not only clear up the rumors regarding Sommer's supposed dismissal, but the poor test screenings as well. Said di Bonaventura about Sommers:

It's very unfair to Steve, it's completely untrue he was never asked to leave or been fired or any of that. That's ridiculous. The movie tested very well.

    As for the test screenings:

We had three test screenings, three different times and tested it and each time it just got better and better. We started off in a good place and we ended up in even in a better place, which is what you hope on a film from testing it.

So, Sommers is still on the job. In fact, he even has final cut. So now fans will have to wait until August 7 to see how well Sommers did, or did not do, with G.I. Joe.

  • Snake Eyes Won't Talk in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

G.I. JoeFans of the G.I. Joe already have a bones to pick with the current big screen adaptation G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: Cobra Commander's new scuba-like mask or Destro's "nanotechnology" mask that looks like the costume director unloaded a can of silver spray paint on actor Christopher Eccleston's face, but there's one thing that fans can take solace in and that's the lack of dialogue coming from the martial arts expert Snake Eyes.

Channing Tatum (Duke) told MTV that Larry Hama, the movie's creative consultant and the writer of the G.I. Joe comic in the 1980's, laid down the law concerning Snake Eyes:

I think that the first and the one thing that [Hama] said was, ‘Okay, I’ll do this. But Snake Eyes can’t talk. No matter what, Snake Eyes can’t talk.’ At one point they had Snake Eyes saying one line or something like that at the end of the movie and he’s just like, ‘Never. Never in a million years. I’m never going to let that happen.’ So he doesn’t.

While that may pacify some fans, Tatum offered other reasons to worry about the adaptation. According to Tatum, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is "almost 75% digital" which could be good news or bad news depending on how you feel about director Stephen Sommers's track record of effect's-heavy efforts like The Mummy, Van Helsing, and, before anyone thinks this is bad news, 1989's submerged horror flick Deep Rising. Feel good? No?

Tatum also told SciFiWire that he and other actors had a hard time keeping a straight face while working on the movie:

I don't know anyone that wasn't laughing on the set all the time on G.I. Joe. I'm sitting there looking at a green screen like, "RIPCOOOORD! NOOOO!" Stuff like that, and you're just like, "What am I doing?"

Before fans burn their comics or tear their action figures, Tatum did say that the script is very self-referential, with Marlon Wayans at one point mentioning a "kung fu grip." Now you can feel better.

  • Brendan Fraser isn't Gung Ho about his G.I. Joe Cameo

G.I. Joe: The Rise of CobraInkheart actor Brendan Fraser revealed to a roundtable of reporters that he does a gag bit in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra -- reuniting with his Mummy director Stephen Sommers.

But Fraser was quick to dispel earlier rumors about being resident Marine Gung Ho.

Let me get something straight. I'm not Gung Ho. I don't know what you've read, but that is not the name of my character. If you look him up, with all due respect, he looks like a refugee from the Village People, and, no, I did not attire myself as such. I will tell you that they gave me a really cool motorcycle to ride. It's a sight gag. I show up, and you're supposed to go, 'Hey!'

When an intrepid reporter asked whether that meant he would be playing one of the villainous mercenaries called Dreadnoks, Fraser immediately clammed up, "I'm not talking about that."

Love your '80s nostaliga trips? You're in luck.

Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) pitched his heart out to the execs at Paramount on Weds night and they were hearing what he was putting it out there. The studio hired him in the room to direct a live-action version of G.I. Joe, and is now looknig for a writer. Filming is scheduled to start in Febuary and the movie will come out during summer 2009.

And director Betty Thomas has been hired to direct a comedic adaptation of Dallas. The movie was previously slated to be a drama, with Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) attached to direct, but it will be going in a different direction. John Travolta is still attached to star as J.R.
