  • Green Lantern Screenwriter Offers an Update

Green LanternGreen Lantern co-screenwriter Marc Guggenheim spoke to SciFiWire and updated the status of the movie's script and casting issues. Guggenheim had just delivered a new draft of the script, which he says focuses on the first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, and how he becomes part of the Green Lantern Corps.

You know, there's no desire on anyone's part to completely change the character and just call this other character Green Lantern and try to ... draft off the name recognition. This is all about "How do we bring the best version of this character to the silver screen?" We've drawn heavily from ... a lot of different sources in terms of the comic books.... The character ... is several decades old, so ... we've really had an incredible amount of source material to cherry-pick from.

While Guggenheim says no decision in casting has been made, he did address some of the recent rumors that had either Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) or Chris Pine (Star Trek) cast in the lead role.

They're all false. I mean, they're all false insofar as we haven't chosen anyone yet. They're still in the negotiations, you know? There's a lot of names being talked about, and there's a lot of people being met, and a lot of ... actors reading the script. But if you read online [that] Pauly Shore's been cast as Hal Jordan, I can guarantee you we have not cast anyone.

Pauly Shore? Did Guggenheim perhaps mean Brian Austin Green, who's been openly campaigning for the role? In any case, note that while Guggenheim didn't exactly agree to Shore, but he didn't say no either. So, there's a chance! Keep your fingers crossed, Pauly!

Green Lantern starts shooting this summer in Australia and arrives in theaters on June 17, 2011. Martin Campbell will direct the production.

  • Green Lantern Movie Gets $150 Million Budget and a Studio in Sydney

Green LanternThe Hollywood Reporter has put a number on the amount of money that Warner Bros will be laying down for the Green Lantern movie. Reportedly, the $150M figure is about the same that they shelled out for their most recent super movie Watchmen.

We almost had a nerdgasm when script details came out last summer. The proposed storyline is gigantic in scale, and if loyally followed, it won't be your typical earth-bound comic book movie, but a space saga of epic proportions -- complete with cosmic battles requiring tons of sweet SFX. It could clearly be kick-ass, and this budget bodes well for the post-production quality of this movie.

Also noted in the news is a release date of December 2010, and the filming location confirmation over at Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia, where the recent decline of the Australian dollar should help stretch that $150 million budget even further. The studio choice may have also been a part of the Warners/Fox legal settlement over Watchmen -- sheer speculation on our part, but still interesting to note.

Now everything is nailed down except a lead actor. So, expect an announcement soon of the star who will slip on the power ring. All are rumors at this point, but some names that have been bandied about are Ryan Gosling, Trekkers Anton Yelchin, Chris Pine and ex-90210er Brian Austin Green -- who has a winning name for the role.

  • Brian Austin Green Lantern?

Brian Austin GreenWhile Green Lantern fans don't have to worry about the Chris Pine casting rumors anymore -- the Star Trek actor confirmed that he did "not have the part" and never "read a script" -- there is another actor interested in the role: Brian Austin Green. The former Beverly Hills 90210 star told Comic Book Resources why he would make a good Green Lantern:

I've always kind of felt that Hal Jordan needs to be a man. He needs to be somebody who lives a little and experienced a lot... I think he's a guy who has a lot of demons and he's fighting them constantly.

Anyone who dated Tori Spelling's Donna for as long as Green's David did ought to know about demons.

Green became interested in the role after seeing fan art depicting him as Green Lantern, and, in all fairness, the irony of "the kid from 90210" trying to be cast in a big budget superhero movie isn't lost on Green:

I understand that I'm kind of a tough sell. I wouldn't be what somebody would normally be looking for in a film like that. I mean I don't have film draw. I haven't been in anything that has gotten people into a movie theater. So it would be a big risk for a company to take, I get it. But at the same time, sometimes those risks are the things that seem to work and pay off the most.

As risky as a West Beverly Hills High graduate attempting a music career?
