  • Michael Caine Says No Johnny Depp in Batman 3

Caine, Nolan, and Bale in Dark KnightMichael Caine may be in hot water again. He got in trouble when he confirmed rumors with MTV that Johnny Depp would play The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman would play The Penguin in Batman 3. At the time, Caine said:

When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do The Dark Knight next, I didn't [know] what that meant in Batman terms. I said, "What's the story?" and he said The Joker. I said, "Oh, s**t! How are you going to top Jack [Nicholson]?" He said, "Well, I've cast Heath Ledger. And I went "Ha! I couldn't top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could." And he did.

I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, "Are we going to make another one?" They said yeah. I said, "How the hell are we going to top Heath?" And he says "I'll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin." I said, "S**t, they've done it again!" [Laughs]

A year later, Caine is trying to do damage control, speaking with MTV again, and refuting those same newspaper rumors he was so quick to confirm.

Johnny Depp is great in anything, but there is no Johnny Depp in this Batman. They tell me in no uncertain terms.

Depp has claimed he'd "juggle" his schedule for the chance to appear in Batman 3, though there's little reason to worry about that now, since Caine says there's little chance that Batman 3 will see the light of day soon.

There is nobody, there's no script, there's nothing. It can't possibly be made before 2011 because [Nolan's upcoming thriller] Inception is such a big picture.

Of course, after all the trouble he made last year, Caine is currently the last man to know anything about Batman 3.

[They] won't tell me anything because I said this before. No one will tell me anything now. They say, "Don't tell Michael, he'll tell everybody."

  • Casting Doubt

Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt John Patrick Shanley's Doubt has traveled far in the past four years -- from its off-Broadway beginnings to Broadway success to holiday-release movie. Awards buzz has followed Shanley's work throughout. The play won a Pulitzer Prize along with several Tony and Drama Desk awards. To date, the movie has racked up 10 SAG and Golden Globe nominations, with Oscar season fast approaching.

Shanley's success isn't too surprising, given the caliber of talent he's brought to his casts. In the movie, Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman star as the embattled Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn. Recently, ReelzChannel sat down with both stars to discuss bringing this tale about the consequences of blind justice to the big screen. See our interview with Meryl Streep and interview with Philip Seymour Hoffman.

  • Hoffman Squashes Batman Rumor

    Toronto Film Festival

Philip Seymour HoffmanAt the Toronto Film Festival, Philip Seymour Hoffman told Dailies' Andrea Bain that he's not planning on playing the Penguin in the next Batman movie. And not just denying it, but denying it strongly: "It is truly the definition of rumor. It's wild because I've never heard this until a friend of mine told me she read about it in the paper and I was like, "That's, that's a rumor. If you looked it up in the dictionary, it would say, 'That is a rumor.' That's wild."

His response when asked if he'd be interested? "I don’t know," he said. "I haven't read anything, no one's ever offered me anything, it might just be completely bogus." Which, if you ask us, can only mean one thing: Philip Seymour Hoffman is not playing the Penguin in the next Batman movie ... unless someone offers him the gig.

According to our Batman Villains & Casting Speculation article, that leaves Jack Black as the other option.
