  • New World War Z Script on Its Way
    World War Z

Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster surprised everyone when he turned down another Bond flick to direct the adaptation of Max Brooks' best-selling novel World War Z. A script from J. Michael Staczynski was already in place and had been hailed as "a horror epic, a serious, sober-minded adult picture waiting to be made" and "a genre-defining piece of work" by an AICN script review. Straczynski himself described it as a "thriller" along the lines of Bourne Identity. You know, but with zombies.

Forster disagreed, however, claiming the script was "far from realization" and decided to make the thriller Disconnect before starting work on World War Z. Screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom) was brought in to work on another draft in the meantime.

All of this was confusing to Brooks, who recently told MTV that he doesn't understand why Carnahan was brought in to work on a script he already thought was "brilliant."

You know... the studio comes in and gives their notes and Forster came in and gave his notes. Carnahan was brought in for reasons unbeknownst to me. Maybe he's doing a polish, maybe he's doing a top-down rewrite. I know that his draft is supposed to come in in the next few weeks.

I read Straczynski's first draft, and it was f**king brilliant. As the book writer I know that's sacrilege to say, but it really was good. I turned to my wife and said, "Honey, this is as good as the book. This is gonna be an amazing movie."

When Forster originally joined WWZ, the movie was tentatively scheduled to be released in 2010. With Forster now working on Disconnect, WWZ is more likely to arrive in 2012, but with a script revision arriving "in the next few weeks" and a box office landscape currently being ruled by the zombie comedy Zombieland, World War Z may enter theaters sooner rather than later.

  • Who Should Replace Hardwicke on New Moon?

Twilight castTwilight lived up to some pretty lofty expectations, so the news that its director, Catherine Hardwicke, has flown the coop is rather disheartening. Hopefully, the film's success will mean that Summit can raise the bar even higher when it seeks out a helmer for the highly anticipated sequel. Of course, the sheer abundance of gun-for-hire hacks roaming the streets of Hollywood is enough to make any Twilight fan's skin stop sparkling.

So who should direct Twilight's more-demanding, more-expensive sequel, New Moon? Alfonso Cuaron, who elevated the Harry Potter franchise from Chris Columbus' jumbled beginnings to the dark, superior third movie, Prisoner of Azkaban, would seem the perfect choice. He's got a consistently busy schedule, but he might be willing to rearrange if Summit makes an offer he can't refuse. Sofia Coppola could use a resurgence after the disappointing Marie Antoinette and has experience working with younger casts, though the auteur does tend to lean towards artier fare.

Whatever happens, let's just cross our fingers that Paul W.S. Anderson and Brett Ratner are unavailable.

Who would you like to see direct New Moon? Post a comment below and let us know!

  • World War Z: Bourne with Zombies

World War ZWorld War Z screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski spoke with MTV about the plans for his adaptation of Max Brooks' best-selling novel now that he's finishing another draft for recently attached Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster.

It's clear Forster and company are not making the typical zombie movie. "Most zombie movies to this point have been small, focusing on a few people in a house. And this has got real scare. You're in India with hundreds of boats trying to get out of there with a tidal wave of zombies. The scale of what we're doing here is phenomenal," said Straczynski. "We talk about it as a thriller, the closest comparison being 'The Bourne Identity.'

Does this mean a shotgun blast to head will be replaced by a rolled-up magazine to the head? We'll have to wait and see, World War Z starts production in early 2009.

  • Quantum of Solace Director Pulls Another Surprise

Marc ForsterMarc Forster raised plenty of eyebrows when he accepted the 007 gig after making a career of directing more serious dramas like The Kite Runner and Monster's Ball. Still more eyebrows are raising now as Forster has turned down the next Bond film to direct World War Z, the film adaptation of Max Brooks's best-selling novel that chronicles interviews of survivors 10 years after a zombie apocalypse.

The film will be Forster's first attempt at the genre. However, he told Variety, "The genre [has] always fascinated me, and when they pitched it to me, it reminded me of the paranoid conspiracy films of the '70s like All the President's Men." What about the zombie films of the 1970's, we wonder?

  • No More Bond for Forster; No Thor for Daniel Craig

No voyages to Asgard for Daniel CraigQuantum of Solace director Marc Forster revealed on Monday that he was offered, but declined, the director's job on the next James Bond flick. "They offered me the next one," the Switzerland native told us. "But I'd like to switch genres. I don't want to do (Bond 23) because when you're doing these kinds of movies, you don't have a life. You're working all year, 24/7, around the clock, and that's what your life becomes. I don't necessarily want to do that again."

In other Bond-related news, IESB reports that Quantum star Daniel Craig turned down the starring role in Thor. Craig, who's currently committed to making two more 007 flicks, said that playing Marvel Comics' Norse god/superhero would be "too much of a power trip."

If Craig is ever seriously concerned that he might be on the verge of a power trip, all he needs to do is pop in a DVD of The Golden Compass. That should bring him back down to earth in no time.
