  • Peter Jackson Previews The Lovely Bones, Talks About The Hobbit

    Comic-Con 2009: San Diego

EW reports that Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson spoke to the public at Comic-Con in San Diego following a screening of Neill Blomkamp's District 9, which he his producing. Jackson spoke about both The Hobbit, which is being directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), and his own The Lovely Bones, due in theaters this December.

Jackson will deliver a script for The Hobbit in a few weeks, and he says that work on the movie is still very preliminary.

We don't have a budget. We don't have a green light. We can't offer any actors roles til then.

Meanwhle, Jackson screened a short clip for The Lovely Bones ahead of the release of the first official trailer on August 7. The movie tells the story of a 14-year-old girl — portrayed by Saoirse Ronan — who is murdered and afterwards watches over her family from heaven. She also sees her killer (Stanley Tucci) and struggles with a desire for revenge. Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz play the girl's parents.

Although the subject matter of the movie is grim, Jackson finds humor in the main character.

She's wonderfully funny. She feels no self pity and makes ironic, wry observations.

  • Robert Pattinson Joins Unbound Captives

Robert PattinsonRobert Pattinson has apparently signed on to appear in period drama Unbound Captives, alongside Hugh Jackman (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Rachel Weisz (The Mummy).

Production on the movie is due to start at the end of the year, which leaves just enough time for Pattinson to finish New Moon promotional duties. Rumor has it he accepted the part last fall, before he shot to instant fame with Twilight.

To be written and directed by Madeleine Stowe, Unbound Captives sees the widow Weisz's two children captured by a Comanche war party in 1859. Jackman plays the frontiersman who rescues her, with Pattinson taking on the role of the son.

Things are looking good for the young British actor, who was also recently linked with 2010's Dune update. We're betting he's glad he auditioned for that little project called Twilight. Unlike co-star Kristen Stewart, he knows when he's got a good thing going.

Rachel WeiszAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Rachel Weisz -- who won an Oscar for her role in The Constant Gardener -- may portray Hedy Lamarr in the upcoming movie Face Value.

Lamarr, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Austria, was best known for her performance as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949). However, Face Value reportedly will focus a great deal on her often-overlooked career as a scientist. In the '40s, she helped pioneer a communications technology currently utilized by today's WiFi devices.
