  • Director Martin Campbell Confirms Green Lantern Will Make "Constructs" with His Ring

Green LanternThe adventures of a superhero named "Green Lantern" date back to the publication of All-American Comics #16, published in July 1940, making the character nearly as old as the first superhero, Superman. The original Green Lantern was named Alan Scott and his powers derived from a magic ring and lantern that gave him incredible abilities. When the appeal of the character — and the superhero genre in general — waned in the late '40s, his comic book was canceled. However, the name would live again in the '50s with the creation of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who also wielded a power ring and lantern, but whose abilities derived from science.

Though they may have different alter-egos, costumes, origins, and weaknesses, what unites the two disparate Green Lanterns is their power ring. The ring bestows many abilities to the user, including flight, telepathy, power blasts, and others, but the trademark ability of the ring has always been the creation of "solid-light" or "solid-energy" constructs limited only by the imagination and will power of the ring wielder. In many older comic books, Green Lantern typically created simple constructs with the ring, such as a giant pair of scissors or a giant boxing glove, but as comic book readers have become more sophisticated, so have Green Lantern's constructs. In a typical modern issue of Green Lantern, Hal Jordan may use his ring to create anything from a Tyrannosaurus Rex to an F-22 Raptor fighter jet.

Since the announcement that Warner Bros. was developing a live-action Green Lantern, fans of the character have been speculating about whether this ability will be featured in the movie. Any doubt that director Martin Campbell might opt to feature Green Lantern's more pedestrian powers can now be laid to rest. While doing press for his latest movie, Edge of Darkness, Campbell revealed to MTV that this ability will be actualized in the movie. Campbell even gained some comic-nerd cred by correcting the interviewer's inaccurate use of the word "object" to describe the creations.

They're called constructs, and indeed he will [create them]. So, one of the nice things is you all sit down and say, "What are we gonna do here?" We can make something a little imaginative, we can do this, we can do that.... So, really, it's as much as your imagination can go to make the constructs, if you see what I mean.

When asked if there was a specific construct effect that Campbell was particularly pleased with, Campbell said it was still too early to make those types of decisions.

Well, we haven't even ... because I haven't even started filming, we've locked off a few, but beyond that, no. They'll all be, of course, done in post-[production], so we'll have a reasonable amount of time to be thinking.

Green Lantern goes into production in March with Ryan Reynolds portraying Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. The only other confirmed cast member at this time is Blake Lively in the role of Hal's boss and love interest, Carol Ferris.

  • Director Martin Campbell Says Green Lantern Will Only Have One Villain

TransformersDirector Martin Campbell's latest movie, Edge of Darkness, is in theaters now, but the movie he seems to be questioned about the most is his upcoming DC Comics adaptation, Green Lantern. At the L.A. premiere of Edge of Darkness, Rebecca Murray of About asked Campbell about the Internet rumors that there will be two villains in Green Lantern — Dr. Hector Hammond and Sinestro — which he emphatically denied.

No, no, no, no, no. Don't listen to that nonsense.

Campbell has previously admitted that classic Green Lantern villain Sinestro will be in the movie, and that actor Mark Strong is in talks for the role, but that Sinestro may not not be a villain in his live-action debut. This leaves only Dr. Hector Hammond as the resident bad guy, a role that Peter Sarsgaard is reportedly in negotiations to fill.

When asked for plot details, Campbell reiterated a previous statement he made about the Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn mini-series serving as the basis for the movie.

Well, I'll tell you what. Get the origin story, read that, and you'll be pretty much on target. Well, you know, it varies slightly. But it's pretty much the origin story of Green Lantern

Green Lantern goes into production in March. Ryan Reynolds will play the title role of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, with Blake Lively starring as Carol Ferris, Hal's boss and love interest (and eventual enemy in the comic books). No other cast members have been announced as of yet.

  • Ryan Reynolds Working With Deadpool Writers "Every Day"

Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: WolverineWhile Ryan Reynolds is preparing himself to start shooting Green Lantern this March in New Orleans, he's also keeping tabs on the other franchise movie he's trying to ignite: the X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off Deadpool. Reynolds told MTV that he's in constant communication with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

I talk to them every single day. We're all very sick of each other already. It's actually a really wonderful creative trifecta — we're having a very good time.

Wernick and Reese were responsible for writing Zombieland and, since the movie opened last October, have found themselves to be hot commodities in Hollywood. Reynolds says the two writers are perfect for Deadpool.

Tonally, they got it. They just [understood 'Deadpool'] right off the bat. They're fans of the character and they were so excited. We couldn't have done any better [than Reese and Wernick].

Green Lantern opens June 17, 2011, but Deadpool is only in script stage and it will be some time before a director and other cast members are brought in on the project. Reynolds has suggested Quentin Tarantino as a "dream director" for the movie.

  • Ryan Reynolds' Buried Gets Picked Up at Sundance

Ryan Reynolds in BuriedIn a speedy deal that Variety says "defies recent history," Ryan Reynolds' independent thriller, Buried, was one of the first major feature movies snatched up after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival. Lionsgate reportedly acquired the North American distribution rights for between $3 million and $4 million.

Written by Chris Sparling (An Uzi at the Alamo) and directed by Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés (The Contestant), Buried takes place nearly entirely in a coffin. The story revolves around a private contractor (Reynolds) in Iraq who wakes up to find that he has been buried alive.

Cortés was apparently delighted with the Lionsgate deal and said that the distribution arrangement is "a very natural fit" for his movie. Jason Constantine of Lionsgate called Buried "one of the tightest, most intense thrillers we've ever seen."

  • Ryan Reynolds Praises the Hiring of Blake Lively for Green Lantern

Ryan ReynoldsOf the five candidates reportedly considered for the part of Green Lantern love interest, Carol Ferris, Blake Lively seemed the odd woman out. But in a conversation with MTV, Ryan Reynolds praised Lively's audition.

She's amazing — that girl is nobody's fool. She came in and, much like everyone else in the film, had to fight for the role and read [for the character]. She did such an amazing job. She's going to be flawless, she's going to be perfect.

Should Green Lantern prove successful, Lively could appear in future sequels, where her character will likely turn into the villain Star Sapphire. How much Lively will appear in the upcoming Green Lantern is unknown, considering director Martin Campbell told MTV that a good portion of the movie will take place in space.

I don't know what the percentage is, but there's quite a bit in space. The initial trip up there, the training sessions he has to go through in order to become a Green Lantern. Then, of course at the end, he goes back up to Oa again. There are a couple of bits [on Earth] in between [the space scenes]. I think there will be enough [of a balance between space and Earth] to satisfy everybody.

With Lively not yet transformed into Star Sapphire, her screen time will likely be Earth-bound, as well as the time spent fighting villain Dr. Hector Hammond. (Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to play the role.)

  • Ryan Reynolds Says Green Lantern's "Ready to Go" and More from Sundance

Matt Mauro is the co-host for ReelzChannel TV's Hollywood Dailies and occasionally shares stories from the field.

What a first day at Sundance — feels like three or four days of movies were packed into 24 hours. Among the highlights, interviewing Ryan Reynolds. What a nice guy. He's here for his new movie Buried, in which he plays a guy trapped in a coffin with a flashlight and dying cell phone.

On the red carpet for Buried's premiere, I asked Reynolds if he could share any details about Deadpool or Green Lantern.

There is not much to tell except that they are both full steam ahead. Green Lantern is actually six weeks out right now, so we are ready.

I also did a bunch of interviews for Please Give and HappyThankYouMorePlease, two great indie movies, and talked with Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk from Tucker and Dale vs Evil — the comedy/horror flick about hillbillies and your perception of people.

Today's Sundance highlights include The Runaways with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart and John Legend. Tune into Hollywood Dailies starting Monday for our full coverage of Sundance.

  • Martin Campbell Says Emerald Dawn Series Is "The Origin" of Green Lantern Movie

Director Martin Campbell is at it again. The production start date of his latest movie, Green Lantern, is still two months away, yet Campbell is already actively promoting his comic book adaptation in a series of recent interviews.

Campbell told MTV that actor Mark Strong was in negotiations to play the role of Sinestro, Hal Jordan/Green Lantern's (Ryan Reynolds) former teacher and eventual arch-enemy. In an interview with ComingSoon, he then hinted that Sinestro may not be a villain in the feature. Campbell also spoke with the L.A. Times and said that he was attracted to the theme of "will power" that is at the heart of the Green Lantern's abilities and compared the character to classic serial hero Flash Gordon.

In his most recent interview, Campbell divulged a major plot clue by saying that DC Comics' Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn was "the origin" story the movie was based on. This series re-wrote Hal Jordan as more of an unlikely, slightly tarnished hero, rather than the fearless boy scout he was portrayed as earlier on. Hal's rebellious streak helped him to become one of the greatest members of the Green Lantern Corps of intergalactic guardians.

[Hal is a] hotshot military guy who is slightly f--ed up. He screws up a bit. He may be a hotshot as a pilot, but he also has chinks in his armor, which is what makes him interesting. In fact if anybody should not be chosen as Green Lantern, it would have been Hal Jordan. That's the journey that film takes, about somebody who on the surface of it is the least likely candidate to become one of the greatest Green Lanterns.

The only Green Lantern cast member besides Reynolds that is confirmed at this time is Blake Lively in the role of Carol Ferris, Hal's boss and love interest. In addition to Strong negotiating for Sinestro, Peter Sarsgaard is supposedly in talks to play the villainous Dr. Hector Hammond.

  • More from Director Martin Campbell on Green Lantern

Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) hasn't even assembled a full cast for his new movie, Green Lantern, yet, but he's already making the rounds to promote it.

Campbell recently spoke with MTV about the possibility of actor Mark Strong (Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes) playing the role of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern's (played by Ryan Reynolds) mentor-turned-nemesis Sinestro, in the movie. In a separate interview with ComingSoon, Campbell once again mentioned Sinestro, but hinted that he might not be making his big-screen debut as a villain, as many fans have speculated.

I think [the movie] will stick closely to the origin story, but we all know Sinestro, for an example, is a character who goes over to the dark side, and of course, Carol, played by Blake Lively, in later versions becomes a bad guy as well. I think people will be able to see forward to the characters that in the comic went on to [become bad guys] ... but people will be ahead of us on all that I think.

And, in a third interview conducted by the L.A. Times, Campbell said that directing a superhero movie is "a departure" for him, but that he likes the aspect of "will power" that is essential to the character — in the comics, the Green Lanterns "will" their power rings to perform tasks to aid them, such as flight, force fields, energy projection, and construct creation.

What I like about this hero and this story is it's all about will power. It's also about fear and about courage. It's not just a spandex suit movie. He doesn't just put on the suit and fly off and face evil kryptonite and all that.

In the comics, the character of Hal Jordan is but one in a vast Green Lantern Corps of ring-wielding space cops, each assigned to a different sector of space. Campbell said that element of the story also appealed to him and that it made Green Lantern more like a sci-fi pulp hero than a typical superhero.

There is a Flash Gordon element to it, this is a superhero who goes to another planet and that's different than the rest. That opens up a lot of interesting options.

Green Lantern begins production in New Orleans in March.

  • More from Ryan Reynolds on Deadpool and Green Lantern

Ryan ReynoldsActor Ryan Reynolds is preparing to do what no other actor has done before him: headline two major motion pictures as as two different superheroes from competing comic book companies. Recently, we've heard a good deal from Reynolds on both his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off movie, Deadpool, and on his role as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the Martin Campbell-direced Green Lantern from Warner Bros.

In November, Reynolds said that landing both roles was "validating and gratifying" and he assured fans that all of "the creative types ... want to make authentic movie[s]." A week ago, Reynolds said that the important moments in Green Lantern will be the ones where he's not wearing the iconic black and emerald costume, but he admitted that seeing the costume for the first time was a "huge moment." Then, Reynolds said that no writer had been found for Deadpool yet, but that someone like Quentin Tarantino would be ideal.

Now, MTV has even more news from Reynolds about his superhero one-two punch. Unlike the aforementioned costume for Green Lantern, Reynolds said that "there's no Deadpool suit" yet, though he added that "the suit is the easiest task." He also assured fans that he wants to maintain the comic book sensibility of Deadpool by having the character break the fourth wall.

I've told Fox already that the only way there's ever gong to be a Deadpool trailer is if Deadpool makes his own trailer. He needs to be talking to the movie audience ... with the movie trailer voice: "In a world ... gone mad ... one man ... must stand alone..."

Green LanternReynolds also dismissed any notion that his involvement would make the two characters too similar to one another.

There's such a vast difference between the characters, and I think people forget that I'm an actor. These are roles that just happened to fall under the umbrella of the comic book universe.

I think there was some concern that I would make Green Lantern some kind of wise-cracking Wade Wilson-type, and that's not the case at all. If that's what they wanted, why would I have screen-tested for the movie?

  • Ryan Reynolds Would Like Quentin Tarantino to Direct Deadpool

Ryan ReynoldsThe hunt for a writer and director for the Marvel adaptation of Deadpool is underway, and Ryan Reynolds already has a "dream director" in mind. Reynolds told MTV who he would love to direct the project.

You think directors for a movie like this and you immediately picture [Quentin] Tarantino or somebody like that. Obviously Tarantino is a guy that likes to direct his own material, so there's a good chance he wouldn't be the guy. We all have our lists of dream directors.

I think at this point everyone's just focused on getting the right script and the right tone and the right writer involved and I think from there, the world's your oyster. If you get that right, you're going to get an amazing director.

Reynolds claims that no writers have been hired yet, admitting that "we're figuring that out right now." However, Fox may have made their decision.

CHUD reports that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick could be hired to write the script, though no official word has been made. The two writers already finished the script for the Venom spin-off movie, and considering that one of Marvel's current Deadpool comic books features Deadpool teaming up with his own zombie head, Deadpool could be the perfect project for Reese and Wernick.

  • Another Amityville Horror Reboot?

The Amityville HorrorThe current trend in Hollywood to "reimagine" or "reboot" a movie franchise rather than create a sequel continues. This time, it's a horror movie that has already been rebooted in recent years. The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, according to Bloody Disgusting, are planning on rebooting The Amityville Horror less than five years after producer Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes reimagined the 1979 original.

Based on the 1977 book The Amityville Horror: A True Story by Jay Anson, the original movie starred James Brolin and Margot Kidder as newlyweds who are driven out of their house in Amityville, New York, by evil entities from beyond the grave. The 2005 version starred Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George and was marketed by MGM as being based on new information about the supposedly true events.

Other than the news that an unspecified director may already be in talks to direct the reboot, there's no other information about the project. MGM, which is currently in the midst of a financial crisis, retains certain rights to The Amityville Horror and had been planning on developing a related project, The Amityville Tapes.

  • Ryan Reynolds on Green Lantern: Costume Won't Matter

Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds is becoming adept at playing superheroes with both Green Lantern and Deadpool in various stages of development. As with Iron Man, Reynolds told MTV that the moments with Green Lantern out of costume will be just as memorable as the suited sequences.

I think you walk away from this first film, and the moments that you remember and the moments that mean so much to you, not unlike Iron Man, are the moments where the guy's not in the suit. And that's something that they did get right [in Iron Man]. You see why this guy's in the suit, and that's what's interesting to me. Not that he is in the suit, but why.

However, the movie won't be solely focused on getting the character into green tights.

It is [an origin story] to a certain degree, but it's not a labored origin story, where the movie [truly] begins in the third act. The movie starts when it starts. We find out Hal is the guy fairly early on, and the adventure begins.

Still, Reynolds says seeing the costume for the first time was a defining moment for the actor.

I think, seeing the prototypes for the Green Lantern costumes was a huge moment. It was a moment when I was like, "This is happening, and it's happening in the right way." That's a pretty cool, definitive moment for me.

  • Scarlett Johansson Calls Her Iron Man 2 Role "A Total Dream Come True"

Scarlett JohanssonThe stars seem to have aligned for actor Ryan Reynolds and actress Scarlett Johansson. The Hollywood power couple recently celebrated their one-year anniversary and they are both preparing to star as superheroes in three big-budget genre films: Reynolds in Deadpool and Green Lantern; Johansson in Iron Man 2.

Only days ago, Reynolds called 2009 the "most unbelievable year" of his life. In the November/December issue of WebMD magazine, Johansson said that landing the role of the Black Widow in Iron Man 2 was "a total dream come true."

I was such a fan of the first movie. It's just super action packed, and I'm so geeked about about it. Jon Favreau, the director, is also super geeked out about it, so we're in it together.

Though Johansson previously starred in The Island, another visual effects–driven action movie, she said that performing in front of green screens while suspended in wire rigging was a learning experience for her.

It was a whole new world for me, but I built a lot of strength, that's for sure. Working on the wires and being suspended in the air, you throw one wrong kick or punch and, yeah, you're out of whack. But once you're working with the stunt crew and they're going through the craziest stuff, you feel bad about complaining that your knee has been blue for three months. The guys doing the stunts in those Iron Man suits, they can't move in it and can't take it off. I'd say, "Have you peed today?" and they're like, "No, we can't move, we can't take it off, we can't drink water."

When not acting or promoting her new album, Break Up, Johansson uses her fame to help raise awareness of various charities she supports, including Oxfam, (RED) and USA Harvest.

If you already have the spotlight shining on you, it's great to direct that towards a cause you believe in and that you can stand behind. It's nice to be a voice for people who don't have a voice.

  • Ryan Reynolds Discusses Green Lantern and Deadpool

Ryan ReynoldsActor Ryan Reynolds is calling 2009 the "most unbelievable year" of his life. In addition to running a marathon and marrying superstar actress Scarlett Johansson, Reynolds is preparing to make movie history by starring as two iconic characters from competing comic book companies: DC Comics' Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and Marvel Comics' Wade Wilson/Deadpool.

In a recent interview with MTV, Reynolds said that landing both roles was especially gratifying because he had pursued them passionately.

It's incredibly validating and gratifying when you can see that you can manifest something that you desperately want or a goal that you have. This is a difficult industry to get anything made, let alone a passion project, so when you see people understand what your vision is and come aligned with that common goal, it's pretty cool. I'm including all the creative types that are actually involved with Deadpool and Green Lantern, because those guys want to make an authentic movie, and that's something a few years ago studios disregarded.

Reynolds said that one of the "definitive" moments for him was seeing the Green Lantern costume for the first time because he could tell that the film would be "happening in the right way." In contrast, while Reynolds' portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was well-received by fans, the character itself was criticized by many in the fan community for straying too far from its comic book origins.

It's always difficult to fully embrace something that isn't perfect, in terms of staying true to the source material. So it was a little bit frustrating. I really wanted to play Wade, and I really wanted to play Deadpool, and it would kill me to see someone else play them. I had a kind of ham-fisted attitude that it had to be perfect, but it doesn't. The movie's called Wolverine, it's not called Deadpool or Wade. I thought it was a nice little wink and tip of the hat to things to come. Finding the tone of that character alone is such a difficult prospect. I've been in so many meetings lately about Deadpool and meeting all these writers. Everyone is always looking for that one line, "What is that character?" and for me it's kind of like, "There's a guy, and he's in a highly militarized comedic fame spiral." That's not an easy thing to write — an entire screenplay, let alone a franchise. I had a blast playing Wade. Every line I had in that was stuff I thought he would say. It wasn't something that a writer said to me. It was fun to really create that character, including everything he spits out of his awful mouth.
    Green Lantern logo

Reynolds admits that he knew of the character of Green Lantern his "whole life," but wasn't a fan until he had a meeting with director Martin Campbell about the film.

I fell in love with [Green Lantern] when I met with Martin Campbell. When I sat down with him, I really got what it is that this guy is all about. When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has balls of titanium, and the other part is that he's slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of Green Lantern. He's less of the director and more of a general. He just really knows strategies, he knows the intricacies, and his attention to detail! It's infectious. I sat down with him, and I could not even believe what he was saying. When I went to the meeting, I was entirely cynical. I thought, 'What the hell, I'll see what they have to say,' and I left the room with a completely different perspective.

  • Green Lantern Will Be Heavy on Visual Effects
    Green Lanter

The superhero Green Lantern is not as well-known as some of DC Comics' other characters like Superman and Batman, but Warner Bros. is banking on director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and lead actor Ryan Reynolds changing that when the live-action Green Lantern movie hits theaters.

So far, Reynolds is the only actor cast in the movie, and principal photography isn't expected to begin until March. However, that doesn't mean that work on the movie hasn't already begun. In a recent interview with Empire, Campbell said that there will be roughly 1,300 visual effects shots and that "the process" of coordinating all of those shots is both "daunting" and "mind-blowing." He said that most of the effects revolve around the source of Green Lantern's super powers, stemming from his power ring.

It's energized by a battery on the planet of Oa, which taps into the willpower of everyone in the universe. From that ring you can form constructs. So if you got into a fight, you could form a giant fist. Or a fighter plane."

  • Green Lantern Rumors: Jackie Earle Haley to Play Villain; Superman to Cameo
    Green Lantern

In what is admittedly only a rumor at this point, Harry Knowles of Ain't it Cool News is reporting that a "pretty reliable" source has tipped him off about some very interesting Green Lantern movie news. If what AICN is reporting is true, it could be the first sign that DC Comics/Warner Bros. is listening to the fans and taking a page from Marvel Studios' playbook by making GL part of a shared universe, rather than a stand-alone universe like its Batman franchise.

As of now, the only official cast pick is Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the most popular Green Lantern from the DC Comics series. In the comics, Hal's arch-nemesis is Sinestro, a former Green Lantern twisted by his need for order and control, and the character is expected to be the major antagonist for the feature. According to AICN, that role could be going to Jackie Earle Haley, who famously portrayed Rorschach in Watchmen and will be starring as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street relaunch.

And, in news that would trump the Hayley announcement if it turns out to be true, Green Lantern may be visited by at least one other major character from the DC Universe. According to Knowles' source, Superman will make an appearance in the movie. If this rumor turns out to be true, it could be the preamble to the Justice League movie that Warner Bros. has been planning for years, in much the same way Marvel Studios is planning on interweaving characters and concepts in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and The First Avenger: Captain America leading up to The Avengers.

  • Ryan Reynolds Wanted for Motorcade

Ryan ReynoldsDreamWorks has had developing the Motorcade script by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell on their agenda for years, but it never quite seemed to come together as a viable project. Now, however, with a little script doctoring and a celebrated TV producer/director attached, Motorcade seems done spinning its wheels.

Motorcade tells the story of an ousted Secret Service agent who happens to be on hand when the U.S. President is kidnapped. Originally planned as a Tom Cruise vehicle with Len Wiseman directing, the script for Motorcade is now being worked on by Billy Ray. Jon Cassar is attached as director, which would mark the 24 producer/director's first gig helming a theatrical production. Variety reports that Cruise is no longer in consideration for the lead role, with DreamWorks interested in casting Ryan Reynolds instead.

  • Ryan Reynolds Confirms He's Still Deadpool and Green Lantern

Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where he publicly confirmed that he will appear as both Deadpool and Green Lantern. While Fallon found the castings a "double whammy," Reynolds was more modest.

At his point [playing both roles] makes you just like an Internet hero, nothing really more than that.

Reynolds also mentioned he was "4-5 months away from beginning shooting" Green Lantern, but couldn't tell Fallon much more than that.

It's crazy, it's the only job I've ever had that I'm not allowed to really talk about. I think there's like a representative from Warner Brothers who I'm sure is following me around ready to blow-dart me if I say a single word,. I probably have a chip in me somewhere, like if I start talking about it, I'll just pass away.

Since Fallon had no idea what Green Lantern's powers were, Reynolds did offer him a basic understanding.

A lot of [the film] is sort of like a space epic and some of it is on planet Earth. [Green Lantern] has this ring and he's been chosen to have this power and the ring can kind of create anything that his will or his imagination can conjure up.

While Reynolds' explanation is pretty basic, he has been doing his homework. Late Night producer Mike Shoemaker Tweeted to Green Lantern comic book writer Geoff Johns that he made Reynolds deliver the Green Lantern oath.

I just went in Ryan Reynolds' dressing [room] and tested him on the GL oath. He nailed it!

  • Green Lantern Production Headed South of the Border

Green LanternEconomic woes really do effect everybody, even movies with a $150 million dollar budget. Originally set to shoot in Australia, the Green Lantern production discussed moving to New Orleans to escape the $20 million budget increase the rising Australian dollar was creating, but may move to Mexico instead.

Green Lantern was scheduled to start production in Fox Studios Australia starting in November, but has been pushed to early next year. With Warner Bros still currently renting the facility, it's still possible that Australia will keep the project, but a source told Australia's Inside Film Magazine that it's not looking good.

We still haven't given up on Green Lantern but the way the exchange rate is going up it's looking more and more unlikely.

Better brush up on your Spanish, Ryan Reynolds. Looks like you're going to Mexico!

  • Ryan Reynolds Did His Own Swordplay in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Ryan ReynoldsGavin Hood says it's no surprise that Ryan Reynolds would get his own spin-off as Deadpool. The X-Men Origins: Wolverine director told MTV that Reynolds' commitment to the role led him to do the majority of his own swordplay.

[Reynolds spent] the Christmas and New Year's break with the stunt coordinators, because in that scene with the swordplay I think there's only one shot where we used the stuntman. You have to do a heck of a lot of work to work on that swordplay in a very compressed period of time.

His early efforts were somewhat suspect, so we were quite worried, because those swords were twirling and I thought he was going to cut his arms off. In a matter of weeks [he] was spinning those swords like a pro.

Hood admits he'd like to work with Reynolds again.

He's very talented and very pleasant, which makes him a very appealing package.

Let's hopes audiences agree since Reynolds has not just Deadpool but Green Lantern riding on his appeal for box-office success.

  • Deadpool Movie Moving Forward with Ryan Reynolds

Ryan ReynoldsThanks to twitter, it's getting easier for fans to stay up-to-the-minute with their favorite singers, actors, and artists ... and harder and harder for producers and movie studios to keep information under wraps. Last week, it appeared as if actor Tim Pocock had leaked the news that X-Men: First Class would begin shooting in February, but producer Lauren Shuler Donner quickly snuffed the rumor.

Yesterday, more X-film news was spread via twitter thanks to Rob Liefeld, the co-creator of Marvel Comics' Deadpool, including the fact that the "Merc with a Mouth" will appear in costume and that Ryan Reynolds, who recently signed on to play Green Lantern in a competing production, will be revisiting his X-Men Origins: Wolverine role of Wade "Deadpool" Wilson in the solo film.

Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Schuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!

Deadpool movie checklist- DP in costume-check! Breaking 4th wall-check! Loads of killing-double check!

Deadpool movie- YES! Ryan Reynolds is on board!!!

Liefeld also broke the news that another one of his X-Men creations, Cable, might receive his big screen debut.

Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!

  • Green Lantern Production to Celebrate Fat Tuesday in 2010?

Green LanternWith Green Lantern possibly changing its Australian shoot, SlashFilm is now reporting that Warner Bros. may move the production to New Orleans. A source claims that Green Lantern is "scouting in Louisiana" and will likely shoot in and around New Orleans next year. That is, unless Warner Bros. can broker a deal with the Australian government.

The Sydney-based Fox Studios was initially chosen for the $150-million Green Lantern due to the exchange rate benefits that the sagging Australian dollar provided. However, the recent 11 percent rise in the value of the Australian dollar will leave Warner Bros. looking at a $25-million increase in their budget. The studio is currently looking for concessions from the Australian government in order to keep the production in Sydney.

Fans are less concerned with the economics of Green Lantern and are instead wondering how it will be having Ryan Reynolds play both Green Lantern and Deadpool, as evidenced in this fan-made video.

  • Bradley Cooper Upset About Losing Green Lantern Role
    Bradley Cooper

While Bradley Cooper readily admits that rejection "is such a huge, inherent part of the [movie] business," the Hangover star told USAWeekend that losing the role of Green Lantern to Ryan Reynolds was difficult to take:

It was more of an ego hurt than any sort of artistic one.

Cooper must feel that way because, artistically, he's busier than ever. With All About Steve opening September 4, the romantic comedy Valentine's Day currently shooting, and starting work on the A-Team next month before heading over to The Hangover 2. He also recently took part in a Middle East USO tour where he couldn't hide from his Green Lantern rejection:

It's surreal being in a forward-operating base in Afghanistan and having a Marine coming up to you and him going, "Hey, man. Sorry you didn't get Green Lantern."

  • Nathan Fillion Congratulates Ryan Reynolds on Green Lantern

Nathan FillionIn a sign of ultimate good-guy-ness, possible Green Lantern candidate Nathan Fillion told MTV that he "can't think of anyone better" for the role than Ryan Reynolds. Apparently, he's not as upset over losing the part as some may think:

He's got the look, he's got the talent, he's got the chops, he's got the build — the abs, he's got superhero written all over him. I'm a little more like [a] sidekick, I'm a little more comic relief, whereas I know Ryan is going to handle [the role] beautifully. Ryan knows exactly what he's doing and having worked with him for over two years, I know how he handles himself, I know how he attacks things and I'm a big fan.

Fillion and Reynolds both worked together on the TV show Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place, but, in terms of Green Lantern, Reynolds never received the fan support that Fillion did. In fact, Reynolds was more of a last-minute surprise, where as Fillion was the subject of a fan-made trailer that he admitted "tickled me to no end." Still, all of that didn't stop Fillion from praising his one-time TV co-star:

He does really, really good work.... We've actually exchanged a couple of e-mails just recently, just yakking about it. I'm very excited for him.

  • The Flash and Aquaman Movies Moving Forward

    Comic-Con 2009: San Diego

DC is finally taking steps to make movies about their Justice League characters the way Marvel has been making ones about its Avengers. THR reports that DC partner Warner Bros. has brought in three DC comics writers to help consult on several titles, notably Geoff Johns, who has written both The Flash and Green Lantern comics. He's prepared a treatment to guide screenwriter Dan Mazeau's use of the characters. Johns will also produce the movie, which still has no director attached.

Johns spoke about the movie adaptation at the San Diego Comic-Con, though his words were brief. The movie is apparently about, well, speed:

We're caught up in a world that's obsessed with speed these days. Texting, faster downloading… We're always looking for ways to speed things up, it can be hard to slow ourselves down.

As a very popular Green Lantern writer, Johns was happy to give the Ryan Reynolds casting his seal of approval:

It's great, he's got the swagger for early Hal [Jordan, a.k.a. Green Lantern], definitely. And Martin Campbell directing ... I'm psyched about it.

With Reynolds' current zeal for superhero roles, and the fact that he was cast in the part in 2005, he could take the role of Flash as well.

Aquaman has less development to report, but, considering the superhero's usual exclusion when discussing DC movies, was a happy surprise. Thus far, the closest thing to an Aquaman movie has been the brief, fictional Aquaman "movie" scenes shot for HBO's Entourage series, but with Warners searching for a good aqua-story and Leonardo DiCaprio's production company working on it, signs are positive that a real Aquaman will be made.

While DC's progress is hardly in line with Marvel's definitive slate of Avengers movies, it is a step in the right direction. Until they arrive in theaters, however, comic fans can only dream of a day when both Justice League and Avengers movies battle for box office dominance.

  • Ryan Reynolds Talks About Playing Both Deadpool and Green Lantern
    Ryan Reynolds

When Ryan Reynolds was cast as the Green Lantern, with an X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off for his character of Deadpool already in the works, Reynolds became the first actor not only to play two superheroes but also the first to play a hero from both Marvel and DC comics. In an article discovered by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld and posted on his Twitter feed, Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly he sees no problem with the casting:

There's no rule that says you can't play two different characters in two different comic book universes.

Checking the comic-adaptation rule book verifies that Reynold's statement is true. Reynolds may not be done, either. In 2005, Reynolds was cast as The Flash before that project fell apart. Reynolds still sounds interested:

There's so many interesting comic book characters out there, I would love to do others.

If Reynolds does end up playing The Flash as well as Green Lantern, it would make a Justice League movie very Reynolds-centric. Fan art has provided a first-look of Reynolds as the Green Lantern and The Flash. Look back and forth to see what a scene between scene between Reynolds and Reynolds would look like.

  • Ryan Reynolds to Star in Green Lantern Movie

Ryan ReynoldsThe wild rumors and speculation are finally over: Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will play the title role in the upcoming live-action comic-to-movie adaptation from DC Comics and Warner Bros., Green Lantern.

According to Variety, Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Jared Leto (Fight Club) were under option to play Green Lantern as well, but only Reynolds' option was extended, effectively making him the "last man standing" in the casting selection process. Other actors recently rumored to have been up for the role include Justin Timberlake (Alpha Dog) and Nathan Fillion (Serenity), who was recently the subject of a popular fan-made Green Lantern trailer that used his likeness.

One of the most popular characters in DC Comics' pantheon of heroes -- but not very well known to non-comic book fans -- Green Lantern is Hal Jordan, a fearless test pilot who receives a ring of unimaginable power from a dying alien member of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peace-keeping force. When donned, the ring becomes an extension of Jordan's will, manifesting green constructs of whatever he can imagine. To raise awareness of the character, DC Comics recently released the Green Lantern: First Flight animated feature.

Reynolds is not a stranger to comic book adaptations. He has played two characters from Marvel Comics -- vampire hunter Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity and, more recently, Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine -- and was often rumored to be interested in playing Wally West/The Flash, another DC Comics character and the teammate of Green Lantern in the Justice League of America.

There is no word how, if at all, Reynolds being cast as Green Lantern will affect the proposed X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off film about Deadpool that Fox is supposedly developing for him.

  • Deadpool To Break the Fourth Wall
    Ryan Reynolds

In the comic books, Deadpool, Marvel's proclaimed "Merc with a Mouth," has two different voices in his head that remind him he's inside a comic book. When it comes to the movie adaptation, Ryan Reynolds sees every reason to continue breaking the fourth wall between the character and the audience. Reynolds told Empire:

Break the fourth wall? Oh yeah, he's got to. I want to see him break the Great Wall.

Reynolds is not feeling much pressure from fanboys either, regardless of the intense amount of excitement over the Deadpool movie:

I'm one of them. I've always been a fan, at least for the last eight or nine years. I feel a bit of validation because I knew going into Wolverine that there's a huge fanbase for this and I don't think anyone else did.

Fans have little reason to feel nervous. Reynolds has said that he, as well as the studio, want to stay as close to the source material as possible. Not only that, but Reynolds is also hoping for Deadpool to "kick Captain America in the nuts." That should make for one interesting movie.

  • Deadpool Wins Fan Poll For Next X-Men Movie

The fans have spoken... to MTV anyway. A poll released last week asked which X-Men-related movie fans wanted to see next: X-Men Origins: Magneto, Wolverine 2, Deadpool, or X-Men: First Class. The results are in and the winner is (should be no surprise if you read the title of this piece): Deadpool, with 32% of the unspecified amount of votes!

Wolverine 2 came in second, with First Class and Magento finishing third and fourth, respectively. Ironically, X-Men Origins: Wolverine seems to set up First Class as the next movie, with Cyclops (Tim Pocock) meeting up with a group of young mutants at the end. Deadpool, a spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds, seems the more difficult movie to fit into continuity considering that Deadpool ends up in, well, not to give anything away, so let's just say...he has his head chopped off and falls down a nuclear silo. Hope that didn't spoil anything.

First Class has Josh Schwartz penning the script, while Magneto, with a script by David Goyer, may be directed by James McTeigue if given the greenlight.

  • Ryan Reynolds Talks The Proposal and Deadpool

Poster for The ProposalRyan Reynolds is brimming with excitement over Deadpool, the upcoming movie spin-off for the character he played in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But while the story for Deadpool is worked out, Reynolds has kept busy with the romantic comedy The Proposal.

Reynolds told Parade that the Proposal shoot had its fair share of difficult moments:

You don't normally combine nudity with stunts. But we had a little 'Cirque du Soleil porn' moment where we had to fall on top of each other totally naked. Some essential body part always popped out because you'd see the cameraman going, 'Oh no, we just saw your...' But by hour four, I'd abandoned the fake leaf or whatever the hell they gave me to cover my privates. I was just throwing caution—and other things—to the wind.

Nudity makes taking a souvenir from the Proposal set more of a challenge than it was for Reynolds on other movies:

I actually took Deadpool's Katana swords with me when I left after filming Wolverine. I checked them in my luggage. And while I was sitting on the plane, I kept waiting for an air marshal to come on board and ask me what the hell I was thinking with two registered Katana swords in a suitcase. But it never happened.

Besides seriously betraying security protocols, Reynolds says that playing Deadpool has other advantages:

I’m into any role in which I get to kick Captain America in the nuts.

  • Ryan Reynolds Wants "Authentic" Deadpool

Ryan ReynoldsOne month ago today, Marvel Comics officially announced that the "Merc with the Mouth," Deadpool, one of the most popular characters in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film, would be receiving his own solo film, possibly called X-Men Origins: Deadpool. The film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, with Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of Wade Wilson/Deadpool.

In a recent interview with MTV, Reynolds said that he gets to be the "authentication police" on the film, making sure that the film character resembles the mythology of the comic books:

(The execs) want to make an authentic "Deadpool" movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible.... (Deadpool's) going to have the scarred-up face, he's going to be in the suit — and, it's going to be incredible.

What is the plot of the film? Who are the villains? What other actors will star in the film? "We're just trying to figure that stuff out," said Reynolds.

  • Ryan Reynolds Talks Deadpool

Ryan ReynoldsWith a Deadpool spin-off confirmed, the question remains: what is the movie going to be about? Ryan Reynolds told IGN that he hopes the movie will stick as closely to the comic book as possible:

It's tough because when you have a character like Deadpool, to the greatest extent of your power, you want to bring as much authenticity to that character as possible. And by "authenticity," I don't mean that you'd want to make him somebody that you'd have a Starbucks coffee with, I mean that you want to make him as close to the comics as possible. But I'm really happy that the studio is as obsessed with making it as close to the comic book source material as possible. And that's all I really needed to hear.

As for whether Deadpool will have much to do with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds said:

Without saying too much, I can't imagine that there's gonna be any tie-in to the Wolverine movie at all. There's that little teaser at the end, but for the most part, I can't imagine that they'd tie it in with the film too closely.

Deadpool will no doubt pull in other characters from the Marvel Universe, and one character Reynolds is really hoping to include is Deadpool's partner Cable. Reynolds told MTV:

That is all being discussed. I'm hoping Cable will be in it. Look, I've made no secret that I love that character. I also love some of the more preliminary characters at the beginning of the series. I like Ajax -- that's an easier character to put in. And Black Tom. I think there's a lot of different villains [we're considering]; you could do a whole bunch of villains, or you could just have Deadpool going up against one guy. We'll see.

Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefield suggested his own story for the movie, which seems to be close to what Reynolds is looking for:

We'll have an adventure with him in the present tense, dressed in his costume, probably breaking the fourth wall, with some kick-ass action. A past love story, a past spy story, his own story of vengeance -- when he said [in Wolverine] that "I brought swords to my girlfriend's wedding," there's something there.

This past love Liefield suggests could be either the Irish mutant Siryn, niece of the villainous Black Tom, or the assassin Typhoid Mary, both of whom were romantically involved with Deadpool in the comics. We've got a strong feeling it will be the later, though, since Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff was recently seen researching the role of Typhoid Mary for an unspecified "Marvel movie."

  • Battlestar Babe Katee Sackhoff Researching Role for Marvel Movie

Katee SackhoffThe Battlestar Galactica actress was spotted at an LA comic book store buying everything she could get her hands on featuring Daredevil villain Typhoid Mary. When asked why, she responded it was, "in hopes to get a part for a Marvel movie."

Is this just wishful thinking, or does Katte Sackhoff know something we don't? We're going to be optimistic and lean towards the latter.

She's a mutant with multiple personalities, who develops various powers depending on which personality inhabits her at the time. There have been rumors floating around for some time of a reboot/sequel to 2003's Mark Stephen Johnson movie, which starred Ben Affleck.

Another possibility is that Sackhoff's research is for the recently confirmed continuation of the X-franchise -- Ryan Reynolds' coming Deadpool movie. In fact, with Typhoid Mary's mutant connection, she could be a candidate for any future X-movie from Fox. Let the speculation begin!

  • Deadpool Movie Confirmed

Ryan ReynoldsWith Wolverine 2 already in the works, MTV has received exclusive confirmation from a source at Fox that a Deadpool spin-off is being developed by Fox. Ryan Reynolds will return as the sarcastic mercenary Wade Wilson and Marvel and X-Men Origins: Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner will produce the movie described as "a complete exploration of this unique character -- his origins, his emergence as the Merc with the Mouth."

No plot outline or screenwriter has been mentioned so far, though if Reynolds gets his way, the movie will be pretty interesting:

I'm thinking musical -- Rated 'R' musical. It hasn't been done. Deadpool singing, dancing... dancing girls...

    Or more seriously, Reynolds suggested:

You definitely have to break the fourth wall and you have to find a way to make that make sense, which is no small feat. So it would involve a really talented writer, an amazing visionary director and I think a great collaboration between everybody passionate about this character.

    That sounds more like it.

  • Ryan Reynolds Discusses Adventureland

Adventureland, the upcoming dram-edy from writer/director Greg Mottola (Superbad), opens this Friday and the stars are out promoting the film in force. In this set of interview clips from Attack of the Show! on G4, Ryan Reynolds and Jesse Eisenberg talk about the “deeply personal” experience of making the film.

    Reynolds:

"You really do see the ugliest side of America when you're, you know, working in theme parks."

The story revolves around a college graduate’s summer job as a “carny” and aims for subtler humor and more nuanced performances than Superbad, for which Mottola is most famous.

    Jesse Eisenberg:

"I genuinely think that it's, like, as authentic as a coming-of-age movie can be. It's autobiographical, so already it kind of starts from a place that's very sincere and real."

Ryan ReynoldsSome news has come in about what exactly is being reshot for Hugh Jackman's X-Men spin-off Wolverine. Spys at IESB.net report that it is mainly extra scenes for Ryan Reynolds' character Deadpool.

Earlier speculation had the movie in trouble over the massive reshoots, which prompted Hugh himself to respond directly to the fanboys in order to quash any negative buzz. But we've heard that they're reshooting a little less than half of the film, which is actually quite a bit, and doesn't exactly build confidence in a movie.

Still, some extra scenes with comic book fan favorites like Deadpool and Gambit should actually help pack theater seats with super movie fans -- their core audience. And more humor by way of Reynolds can't hurt either. Both Reynolds and Deadpool are known for their constant wise-crackery.

Alterior movie motives might also be the reasoning behind these reshoots. Rumors of yet another spin-off featuring the quippy super-soldier have been hitting the web for awhile now. New scenes may in fact be setting up a sequel starring Deadpool.

  • New X-Men Origins: Wolverine Cast Pic

AICN received word from Hugh Jackman himself concerning recent reshoots being done on X-Men Origins: Wolverine along with an awesome cast pic. Here's what Hugh had to say...

Hey everyone! It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!

In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize...

    Cheers, Hugh

  • Upcoming X-Men Sequels

X-Men Origins: WolverineWith X-Men Origins: Wolverine's May 1, 2009, release date approaching, Fox is already planning more X-Men movies.

In the hopes that Wolverine will be a huge success, X-Men Origins: Magneto is already being developed, with The Dark Knight writer David Goyer attached as director, and a plot revolving around Magneto's concentration camp beginnings, as seen in the first X-Men, and his friendship with a young Charles Xavier that eventually breaks apart as their philosophies evolve and differ.

Fox has also announced a movie adaptation of the comic book X-Men: First Class which will examine the early years at the Xavier School, featuring some of the mutants shown in the previous trilogy. Variety confirmed that Josh Schwartz, creator of TV's Gossip Girl, will write the screenplay.

Lastly, a Deadpool movie is in discussion, a spin-off of the comic book assassin Ryan Reynolds portrays in X-men Origins: Wolverine, should the movie be a hit and Reynolds becomes an audience favorite.

  • Ryan Reynolds to appear in Wolverine

Ryan ReynoldsOk, the onslaught of  X-Men Origins: Wolverine news items is starting to get a little ridiculous. The latest bombshell comes straight from fanboy haven Ain't It Cool News, which is reporting that Ryan Reynolds, star of this weekend's fifth-place box office finisher Definitely, Maybe, will be making a cameo in the Wolverine prequel as the high-tech mercenary Deadpool.

Reynolds had forever been attached to play The Flash in a big-screen adaptation of the classic D.C. comic, but this recent revelation may very well put the final nail in the coffin of that long-gestating project.

Why would Reynolds opt to play Deadpool rather than The Flash? Like Wolverine, Deadpool is a darker character with a sharp tongue and Canadian roots -- two factors that likely appealed to Vancouver-bred Reynolds. Or maybe he simply grew tired of waiting for the Flash flick to happen. Either way, it's good news for comic book fans.
