  • Studio pulls Affleck's flick -- and not because it sucks

This one's Casey, not BenUpon hearing the news that a studio has decided against releasing a Ben Affleck movie, one naturally assumes it's because the movie probably sucks -- a perfectly reasonable assumption, given the remarkable consistency of the actor's suckage over the last decade.

Not so fast. Variety reports that the U.K. release of Affleck's directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, has been delayed indefinitely due to its similarity to the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a four-year-old British girl who went missing while on holiday in Portugal.

    Talk about bad timing.

Based on the bestselling novel by Dennis Lehane, Gone Baby Gone is enjoying tremendously good buzz, and is being touted by many as a potential Oscar contender. Ben Affleck, Oscar-winning director? Not sure if I could handle that. I was just starting to get used to Ben Affleck, Oscar-winning screenwriter.

  • Finally, an unnecessary sequel I can get behind: Tron II

Tron!!!Just when I thought the folks in Hollywood couldn't be any more bereft of creativity, flooding the Cineplex with an endless array of uninspired sequels, remakes and so-called "updates," they go and do something like this...and totally redeem themselves!

Ladies and gentlemen, Tron II has gotten the go-ahead.

17 years before Keanu Reeves and pals were prancing around in black leather fetish apparel in The Matrix movies, it was Disney's Tron that first explored the idea of humans doing battle in cyberspace, without the help of overlong Kung-Fu fights or creepy rave sequences. The groundbreaking 1982 film, which starred Jeff Bridges and Cindy Morgan (known best as Caddyshack's Lacey Underall), was also the first to utilize true CGI (albeit with Commodore 64-quality results). On top of that, it was freakin' awesome, man!

25 years later, a follow-up is finally in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Joseph Kosinski has signed on to helm "the next chapter" of Tron, with writing duties assigned to Lost veterans Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Thanks Disney; this totally makes up for Underdog.

  • Can ultra-violence salvage Stallone's career?

Rambo, about to kick assIt appears that Sylvester Stallone is pulling out all the stops in his increasingly desperate effort to stay relevant. After (allegedly) loading up on human growth hormone in order to pump up his physique for last year's Rocky Balboa (the number one chick flick of 2006), the aging action star is stepping things up a notch for John Rambo, the fourth chapter of his only other viable franchise.

A new R-rated trailer for John Rambo has been carefully placed by publicists leaked on youtube (link probably not safe for work, unless you happen to work at Soldier of Fortune magazine), although the term "trailer" can only be loosely applied to the clip. It's basically a collection of violent scenes, packed with so much outrageous gore as to make Apocalypto look like a children's flick. Say what what you will about Sly; he's not fading into obscurity without a fight.

Next Showing: John Rambo is slated for a December 2007 release

  • Scott in talks to enter Kelly's Box

Seann William ScottAfter Southland Tales debuted to a decidedly negative reception last year at Cannes, Richard Kelly's long-awaited sophomore project was plagued by rumors that the film might never see the light of day in the U.S. Thankfully, Sony finally put the speculation to rest last month when they announced that Southland Tales will open November 9th, with a running time considerably shorter than the 180 minute behemoth screened at Cannes.

Kelly's apparent sophomore jinx hasn't done anything to sully his reputation in Hollywood. The Donnie Darko director is already hard at work on his third project, the horror flick The Box, with Cameron Diaz set to star. And now it appears like Southland Tales star Seann William Scott might be coming aboard as well.

In an exclusive interview with ReelzChannel.com, the Dukes of Hazzard  star (lest we forget) revealed yesterday that he's currently in talks to join the cast of The Box, though details have yet to be ironed out. Scott describes Kelly's third film as "interesting and weird. It's gonna be a movie that people either love or hate. And I kinda like those films."

An interesting and weird Richard Kelly film?  Imagine that.

Scott's latest movie, Mr. Woodcock, opens September 14th.

  • Bateman: Arrested Development movie "not dead yet."

BatemanEver since Arrested Development's premature demise, fans of the short-lived, critically acclaimed series have held out hope that the beloved comedy might somehow resurface, whether as a series on another network or as a feature film.

"That is certainly on the table and not dead yet; I just don't know when the right time will be," Arrested Development star Jason Bateman revealed today in an exclusive interview with ReelzChannel.com, adding that the surging careers of fellow castmembers Michael Cera and Will Arnett could help the effort. "Maybe by virtue of us doing well, it makes the idea of a re-visit -- whether it be in a movie or whatever -- a little bit more of a viable scenario. Because if none of us had careers after Arrested Development, it would kind of reek of 'Oh, these poor people couldn't let it go,' or 'They need to make a check.'"

Bateman has several high-profile film projects on the horizon, including Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium and Juno. His latest movie, The Kingdom, opens on September 28th.

  • Chiwetel Ejiofor = Comic Book Hero?

EjioforDirector John Singleton hasn't even started production on his latest project, Tulia, and fanboys everywhere are already asking, "What's next?" Little wonder -- Singleton is attached to direct adaptations of two popular Marvel Comics titles: Luke Cage and The Black Panther. Though he won't say which one he'll do first, Singleton is more than happy to discuss other details, including which actors he'd like to see suit up in the lead roles.

While Tyrese Gibson remains the clear favorite to play Luke Cage (thanks largely to his profile-elevating turn in the blockbuster Transformers), the ideal choice for The Black Panther remains unclear. Up until now, much of the speculation regarding who might play the Panther has centered on multiple Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou -- an obvious choice, given that the character is African and that the Benin-bred Hounsou is the most prominent African actor working in Hollywood today.

In a recent exclusive interview with ReelzChannel.com, Singleton added another name to the list. "Chiwetel Ejiofor could do it," Singleton volunteered, referring to the acclaimed star of Talk to Me and Children of Men. Born in Great Britain to Nigerian parents, Ejiofor has the pedigree as well as the acting chops to handle the Panther role. And anyone who's seen Serenity (all seven of you) knows he can handle action. Just ask the browncoats.

  • Seth Rogen going Green

Seth RogenKnocked Up star Seth Rogen has signed on with Columbia Pictures to write and "likely" star in a big-screen adaptation of The Green Hornet, The Los Angeles Times reports.

If and when Rogen's version of The Green Hornet makes it to the big screen, it will be quite an accomplishment for the Judd Apatow protege. Hollywood's been trying to get a Hornet film made for years without any success, despite the apparently insatiable consumer demand for comic book-related properties. Most recently, Clerks director Kevin Smith was attached to write and direct for Miramax, but the project went nowhere and Smith eventually moved on.

The Green Hornet began as a radio show in the '30s, chronicling the adventures of Britt Reid, a wealthy newspaper publisher by day and costumed crime-fighter at night. The character eventually branched out to other media, including film, television and comic books, with varying degrees of success. The short-lived '60s TV series is notable for introducing American audiences to a young Bruce Lee, who played the Hornet's badass sidekick Kato.

Columbia is said to be hoping for a 2009 release for The Green Hornet.
