  • Edi Gathegi Talks New Moon

Edi GathegiThe Twilight Saga's resident bad vamp, Edi Gathegi, recently spoke to MTV, about costume problems in last year's Twilight and what's in store for his character Laurent.

Of New Moon director Chris Weitz, he said:

God bless Chris Weitz. In Twilight we didn't have shoes, because in the book they don't have shoes — you know, nomadic vampires don't have shoes. And I was cold, I was frozen to death! But Chris was like, "Well, wear shoes."

He also spoke about how thankful he is for his time working on the franchise, which has now made him a household name among Twilighters. At least he'll always be immortalized on the Twilight movie posters. Maybe one day he'll even get his very own Laurent action figure — we bet he can't wait.

  • Edi Gathegi Spills Some New Moon Information

    Naibe Reynoso

Naibe Reynoso is a correspondent for ReelzChannel TV's Movie News, and occasionally shares stories from the field.

Edi Gathegi, who was recently in Los Angeles to introduce Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke during her book release event, talked to me about reprising his vampire role. Laurent who had a conscience in Twilight is a different kind of vampire in New Moon. "He is infinitely less conflicted in this movie," joked Gathegi.

Edi Gathegi and Naibe ReynosoIt has been more than a year since shooting Twilight. In order to preserve his French accent, the Kenyan-born actor practiced with a dialect coach. He kept the impeccable pecs he showed off in Twilight by "hitting the gym." And although vampires and werewolves don't necessarily mix, Gathegi told me he and his buddy Taylor Lautner worked out together: "Taylor is 30 pounds heavier; he beefed up for the role."

As far as what else we can expect in New Moon, Gathegi said "there is a lot more movement in this script." I guess that means more stunts to look forward to -- after all, Bella does become an adrenaline junkie riding motorcycles and cliff diving. She is one tough mortal!

  • New Moon Cast Gearing Up for a Tight Shooting Schedule

New MoonWith shooting scheduled to begin in Vancouver in mid-March, and a release date in November, you'd think that everyone on the cast of New Moon would have gotten a peek at the script. Soon, but not yet.

In a series of video interviews with Collider, Edi Gathegi, Rachelle Lefevre, Ashley Greene, and Kellan Lutz talk about getting ready for the Twilight sequel, what scenes they are most looking forward to filming, and how they are dealing with what looks to be a pretty tight shooting schedule. Despite the looming deadlines, they seem more enthusiastic than anxious about the challenge.

Gathegi, who will return as the vampire Laurent, admits he hasn't seen the script yet and adds: "We haven't even begun filming yet and we'll be in theaters on November 20th watching the movie. That's wild!"

There are signs that production is starting to get going though. Movieset is calling attention to this somewhat cryptic early February casting call that, while not mentioning New Moon by name, sure does look like it must be for the Twilight sequel: "Looking for First Nations/aboriginal actors and actresses between the ages of 15 and 25" for a speaking part in a major motion picture that begins filming in Vancouver in March.... Hmm.

  • Twilight's Edi Gathegi Stays Diplomatic

Edi GathegiAs New Moon gets ready to start shooting in the coming weeks, Edi Gathegi, who plays vampire Laurent, obeyed the publicity machine when talking of the sequel's new director and Catherine Hardwicke's departure. He has yet to meet Chris Weitz, who's taking over for Hardwicke, but says, "I'm looking forward to working with Chris. I think he's very capable. He's got that experience with huge pictures, with 'The Golden Compass.' He's going to make it beautiful. I loved 'American Pie,' so his track record is very promising for me. And I heard he's great with actors. I think 'New Moon' is going to be really good." As for working with Hardwicke, he says, "I loved that woman. I think she made the decisions she made for her reasons." Hmm, sadly it seems Summit didn't really love the woman, and it's doubtful the decision to not direct New Moon was really her own.

While Hardwicke isn't on for the sequel, it was recently confirmed that despite the new director, Taylor Lautner would continue in the role of Jacob Black. Gathegi says that fans can expect Lautner to look even more adorable and ripped in the sequel, if that's even possible. He and Lautner worked out in every city on the Twilight tour, and it's paying off for the 16-year-old. "This kid is so strong right now, it is unreal," Gathegi says of his little gym buddy. "He has achieved with his body what people with steroids cannot achieve. The only way I can describe it is that God has given him this time for this growth spurt and this body right now."

  • Initial Twilight Fan Reaction Not so Warm for Pattinson, Stewart, and Gathegi

    Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

Now that the Twilight faithful have gotten the chance to see the cast in posters, trailers, and still images, the overall reaction to the casting choices is positive. But this was far from the case at the get-go.

Message boards, fan sites, and blogs were awash with venom when the largely unknown cast was first announced for the adaptation of book one of Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular Twilight series. As any regular Internet surfer has surely observed, the more rabid the fan base, the more outright cruel the comments tend to get.

Speaking to the cast of Twilight this weekend, I found the group has managed to emerge unscathed, winning over the fans bit by bit in the months leading up to the November 21st release. But each has had their fair share of mixed emotions about first being introduced to the fan base.

"I've had girls move down autograph tables and look at me with a severe amount of disdain," says star Kristen Stewart, who portrays the story's heroine, Bella. "That is a little unnerving. [They say to me] 'Just [write] your name. Can you not write anything besides your name?'"

"You can go online and cry about what's posted on IMDb or you can read it and get a kick out of it. I have to say, honestly, genuinely, it really doesn't bother me."

Perhaps no one had a tougher time of it than Robert Pattinson, described in the novels by Meyer as being almost impossibly beautiful.

"All my [reactions were] like, 'He looks like a bum,'" Pattinson says with a chuckle.

"I was expecting that, though. I would have had the same reaction. I was embarrassed even going into the audition. I thought I'd be judged. You look on the synopsis and it's like 'Edward is the perfect man. He has impeccable face, body -- everything about him is amazing.' I was quite happy when it was 100 percent negative. I was like, 'Thank you, I'm not perfect. I'm rugged.'"

Edi Gathegi, who portrays the vampire Laurent, decided to face his attackers head-on, using humor to win them over. "The fans were sort of disgruntled about my casting choice," says Gathegi. "Stephenie doesn't necessarily have an African-American in the book and Laurent is described as being 'olive-toned.' So what I did is I decided to address the issue head on. I said, 'Listen, she describes this character as being olive-toned, but there are many different types of olives. Black olives, anyone?'"
