  • X-Men Producer Refutes X-Men: First Class Rumors

X-Men First ClassLast week the Internet was abuzz when X-Men Origins: Wolverine's Tim Pocock used his Twitter page to announce that X-Men: First Class would start production in early 2010. Pocock has since posted a retraction:

victim of cruel prank.last tweet=NOT me.AM filming Aussie show till2010.no official word on XM:FC but am interested.please post retraction.

A "cruel prank" would seem more like using a Twitter account to write a derogatory statement, not announce casting in a major motion picture, but we digress. Perhaps private Twitter accounts that require personal passwords to access are very easy to break into.

X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirms the retraction, telling SlashFilm that X-Men: First Class will not start production next February and that no actors have been cast yet, though the actors portraying the young mutants in Wolverine were optioned for future X-Men-related movies.

Interestingly, Shuler Donner mentioned two other X-Men-related projects that she hopes to pitch to Fox: X-Men 4 and The New Mutants.

  • Deadpool Wins Fan Poll For Next X-Men Movie

The fans have spoken... to MTV anyway. A poll released last week asked which X-Men-related movie fans wanted to see next: X-Men Origins: Magneto, Wolverine 2, Deadpool, or X-Men: First Class. The results are in and the winner is (should be no surprise if you read the title of this piece): Deadpool, with 32% of the unspecified amount of votes!

Wolverine 2 came in second, with First Class and Magento finishing third and fourth, respectively. Ironically, X-Men Origins: Wolverine seems to set up First Class as the next movie, with Cyclops (Tim Pocock) meeting up with a group of young mutants at the end. Deadpool, a spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds, seems the more difficult movie to fit into continuity considering that Deadpool ends up in, well, not to give anything away, so let's just say...he has his head chopped off and falls down a nuclear silo. Hope that didn't spoil anything.

First Class has Josh Schwartz penning the script, while Magneto, with a script by David Goyer, may be directed by James McTeigue if given the greenlight.

  • Anna Paquin Wants to Return For X-Men: First Class

Anna Paquin After X-Men Origins: Wolverine's success, several X-Men actors have expressed interest in returning to the franchise and Anna Paquin is no exception. Paquin told IGN that she would like to return as Rogue, possibly in X-Men: First Class, but with certain conditions:

I would hope I could do a little bit more action next time, though. I kind of find it ironic that I did three big action films and did, actually, no action whatsoever. I mean I got some really amazing emotional story moments, but I didn't really get to do the physical stuff. You know, as much as I loved doing those films I was kind of like, 'OK, so when do I get to beat someone up? When do I get to steal some powers?' You know Sookie [Paquin's True Blood character] gets to do more action than Rogue ever did. So I'm just putting that out there. More action please, for next time.

The X-Men: First Class comic book concerned the original X-Men characters of Cyclops, Beast, Iceman, Angel, and Jean Grey, but the movie could follow some of the lesser used characters from the X-Men trilogy such as Jubilee, Colossus, Angel, Shadowcat and Paquin's Rogue. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, however, featured a young Cyclops (Tim Pocock) and seemed to set up a First Class that would feature Emma Frost, Quicksilver, and Cyclops.

Josh Schwartz (The OC) is writing the screenplay for First Class. No director has been announced yet.

  • Third Wolverine TV Spot Airs

X-Men: Origins WolverineWith the first two TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, titled "Outcasts" and "Brothers," aired and being re-watched online, the final TV spot hit the airwaves.  "Legends" focuses less on Wolverine's past and more towards his future as an X-Man, showing lots of fellow mutants Gambit, Deadpool, Emma Frost, and quite a few shots of Cyclops.

Portrayed by Tim Pocock instead of James Marsden, Cyclops gets three different shots in the trailer, perhaps showing that the attention Gambit and Deadpool received from fans overshadowed a substantial Cyclops role in the movie.

  • New Photos and Release Date for Wolverine

WolverineFans will get to enjoy X-Men Origins: Wolverine a few days earlier. According to DenofGeek, instead of opening on Friday, May 1, Wolverine will open on Wednesday, April 29. Considering that sequels are riding on Wolverine's success, an earlier opening may be a good thing.

New photos of Wolverine were published in a preview article in French Magazine Climax, including a boxing brawl between Wolverine and Blob, and the inclusion of an intriguing co-star, Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. James Marsden played Cyclops in the X-Men movies, but newcomer Tim Pocock will be playing the role in Wolverine. Having Cyclops in the movie is not news, however, as this is one of the first times Pocock has been included in the press for the movie, we're prompted to wonder if Summers' appearance is more than just a cameo.
