  • Can Brad Pitt Save A-List Stars' Paychecks?

Brad PittIt's been a cruel summer — and spring — at the box office for Hollywood's biggest stars. The less-than-stellar success for A-Listers has many in Hollywood worried, according to The New York Times.

A-list movie stars have long been measured by their ability to fill theaters on opening weekend. But never have so many failed to deliver, resulting in some rare soul-searching by motion picture studios about why the old formula isn’t working — and a great deal of anxiety among stars (and agents) about the potential vaporization of their $20 million paychecks.

The under-delivering stars cited include Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Eddie Murphy, John Travolta, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Adam Sandler, and Will Ferrell. At best their films had weak returns. Others close in on the bomb category. Even Johnny Depp's turn in Public Enemies didn't bring the hoped for audience.

The trend is especially clear when you look at the movies that have topped the box office this summer and their leading stars — Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Shia LaBoeuf), Up (Ed Asner), and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Daniel Radcliffe). Will Brad Pitt "stop the bleeding" with this weekend's Inglourious Basterds?

Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Company built the marketing campaign for the film almost entirely around Mr. Pitt.

And the actor may pull it off — kind of. Mr. Weinstein contends that Mr. Pitt’s drawing power is not remotely in question. "Brad Pitt is a super-superstar at the apex of his popularity, and he's a large part of why people want to see this movie," he said.

However, box-office predictions for Inglourious Basterds this weekend range from $25 to $30 million — solid for a Tarantino movie but only midling for Pitt.

What or who is to blame? The instant peer feedback available from social networking, says Peter Guber, the former chairman of Sony Pictures.

You look around the theater and can see the glow, not on people’s faces from watching the movie, but on their chins — from the BlackBerrys and iPhones. They are immediately telling their friends whether it's worth their time. And the answer to that, more often than not, seems to be no.

To which we say, keep the reviews coming, movie lovers!

  • Judd Apatow Interviews Adam Sandler

Back before Judd Apatow was a successful movie director and Adam Sandler was a huge box-office draw, the two were roommates, working the stand-up comedy circuit. At long last, the two are making a movie together, the upcoming Funny People.

Recently, Apatow took some time to interview Sandler about the movie, their past as roomies, and the world of comedians that Funny People inhabits, all the while showing more footage from the movie. Watch the interview below:

For the second part of he interview, which focuses on Sandler's profanity-laden return to stand-up comedy, head here.

  • Judd Apatow Talks About Making Bad Movies

Funny PeopleWith the openeing for his third movie just around the corner, Judd Apatow is guest blogging for MTV. This week he talked about Funny People and how hard it is to make the fictional movie clips used in the viral marketing campaign. The fake movies were created to fill in the life of Adam Sandler's character, famous stand-up comedian George Simmons who, upon receiving news of a potentially grave disease, looks back at his life and evaluates the choices he has made.

Just how difficult was it to make these fictional movie clips?

It was important to us that the clips did not feel like parodies of movies but instead seemed like movies that could actually get made. It makes the clips potentially less funny than parody clips because they could not be truly over-the-top awful, they just needed to be bad the way a bad movie is bad. That being said, after making each of these clips we kind of wanted to see the entire movie.

Enjoy a fake clip below from the fake movie Merman, which Apatow describes as when "what happens when people rip off [Splash], badly."

  • New Funny People Trailers

With Funny People's aggressive viral ad campaign — Adam Sandler's character in fake movie clips and Jason Schwartzman's character in a fictional TV sitcom — it can be tough to remember it's the actual movie that's important.

The latest TV spot, thankfully, features some footage that reveals Funny People has a lot of surprises in store for theatergoers. Check it out below:

As Funny People is rated "R" and is about stand-up comedians, the movie does include some racy language. For those who aren't thrown off by that, there is also a new Red Band trailer ("R" rated).

  • Funny People's Viral Campaign Adds Comedy Superstar Randy Soudha
    Funny People

The viral campaign for Funny People started with a fictional TV show starring Jason Schwartzman's character called Yo, Teach. Next was a website for Adam Sandler's comedian character George Simmons, including clips from his "movies." The latest entry is another fictional website, this time for Aziz Ansari's character the "superstar comic" Randy Soudha, who is a mix of Dane Cook's antics and Eddie Murphy's material.

The website includes a bio, an interactive soundbyte mixing board, and videos of Ansari – sorry, Raaaandy – performing standup (Warning: the clips are funny, but not work-friendly).

  • Funny People's Fake Adam Sandler Movies

The viral video campaign for Funny People launched with a fake TV show of Jason Schwartzman's character called Yo, Teach!. Now director Judd Apatow and company have created a website for Adam Sandler's character of George Simmons, a comedian who has had quite the fictional career. The website contain a biography of the character along with posters and video clips of his fake movies, not unlike the Tropic Thunder viral campaign of fake movie trailers from last year.

While only posters exist for the fake movies of Mer-Man and My Best Friend Is a Robot, there are clips from Dog's Best Friend and Re-Do. Best Friend has Sandler, or Simmons really, playing a cop teamed up with the best police dog on the force, while Re-Do shows how a wish for youth has gone horribly wrong.

  • Eminem to Appear in Funny People

Funny PeopleWith his career on the resurgence, rapper Eminem told VIBE magazine that 8 Mile is not the end of his involvement with the movie business:

Will I end up doing another movie again? Probably yeah. I just did a cameo a few months ago with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen in a Judd Apatow produced film. It's called Funny People.I kinda do a little cameo in that which was fun by the way. And 8 Mile was not a fun movie to shoot.

Eminem won't be the only musician to appear in Funny People, with Bruce Springsteen also making a cameo.

Here's the synopsis of Funny People, according to IMDB:

When seasoned comedian George Simmons (Sandler) learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship cause him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act.

  • Teresa Palmer Is Not Paris Hilton

Teresa PalmerThe Aussie import -- who last year at this time was seen seducing Daniel Radcliffe (perhaps better known as Harry Potter) in December Boys -- stars alongside Adam Sandler in the holiday release Bedtime Stories. But Teresa Palmer nearly didn't get the part.

Her character "was originally written to be sort of that flighty, floozy kind of character," Palmer says. "You know, she likes to go into bars, and have fun with boys, and all that sort of stuff. But when I initially auditioned for it they said, 'You're not right for the part. You're not Paris Hilton enough.'"

But then Adam Sandler changed his mind. Find out why in our Interview with Teresa Palmer, in which we also try to get some details about her involvment in the upcoming Justice League.
