  • Anne Hathaway Plays Alice's White Queen Like a "Punk-Rock, Vegan Pacifist"

Alice in WonderlandLike most of the other curious characters that populate Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the White Queen is quite the piece of eye-candy. Snow White to all appearances, set off by ruby red lips and nails, dark brows, and a hint of whimsy, perhaps even madness, in her eyes. But unlike her sister, the Red Queen, she assumes relatively human proportions, even if she displays a not-quite-so-balanced personality.

The studio has released a new high-res publicity still to highlight her charms, and along with it a Q & A in which Anne Hathaway talks about what it was like to take on the role. She starts off by pointing to some surprising inspirations.

I play the White Queen. When I was trying to work her out, I kept saying to myself, "She is a punk-rock, vegan pacifist." So I listened to a lot of Blondie, I watched a lot of Greta Garbo movies, and I looked at a lot of the artwork of Dan Flavin. Then a little bit of Norma Desmond got thrown in there, too. And she just kind of emerged. And I really like her. When I first came onboard the project, Tim talked a lot about the relationship between the sisters, and that really opened the character up to me a lot. She comes from the same gene pool as the Red Queen. She really likes the dark side, but she's so scared of going too far into it that she's made everything appear very light and happy. But she's living in that place out of fear that she won't be able to control herself.

Since this is not so much a retelling of the classic Lewis Carroll tales as it is a sequel, with an amnesiac Alice revisiting Wonderland, Hathaway goes on to explain how she fits in to the altered landscape.

The White Queen has had her crown taken from her, and she's basically powerless to stop her sister's reign of tyranny. Her sister is the Red Queen. And so, she is waiting. She's basically taken a vow of non-violence that she cannot break, and she's waiting for her champion to arrive to help her reclaim her throne — the citizens of Underland [the true name of Wonderland] would like to see that happen. They want to see her restored to power, because she's kind.

Or at least she seems to be kind. The actress concludes on a note of ambiguity:

I love my character. I love that she seems to be the voice of reason — you'd think that she would be the good queen. But she didn't have to be. I really had a lot of fun playing around with this idea, that what's good in Wonderland is not necessarily good in the real world.

  • John Malkovich Confirms Role as Vulture in Spider-Man 4

John MalkovichThe rumors have been flying left and right as to who Sam Raimi has lined up for Spider-Man 4, and it looks like we finally have some confirmation for at least one of the roles.

The Italian movie site Bad Taste writes that John Malkovich confirmed his role as The Vulture while appearing as a guest on an Italian TV show. The Vulture's alter ego is Adrian Toomes, an engineer who devises an electromagnetic suit that gives him enhanced strength and the ability to fly. The suit allows him to compete with the much younger, more naturally agile Spider-Man.

This is what Bad Taste had to say in a translated comment:

When host Simona Ventura asked Malkovich about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confirmed that he's waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed. He also hopes that shooting will begin as soon as possible.

The said delay is due to negotiations between Raimi and Sony Pictures over the script. We can only hope that these negotiations don't result in a mangled mess like Spider-Man 3. In the meantime, Anne Hathaway is still rumored as the casting choice for the other villain. Rather than play The Black Cat, as originally thought, it seems she may portray a new character, The Vulturess.

We'll let you know when we hear further updates.

  • Spider-Man 4 Courting John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway; The Black Cat Out?

Spider-Man 4The rumors have been flying left and right as to who will portray the villains in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4, and it looks like we may soon find out. Movie Line writes that unnamed sources close to the project confirm that producers are courting John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway.

If all pans out according to plan, Malkovich would portray Adrian Toomes, the engineer who eventually turns into The Vulture. Toomes devises an electromagnetic suit that gives him enhanced strength and the ability to fly. The suit allows him to compete with the much younger, more naturally agile Spider-Man.

Hathaway is reportedly the top choice for Felicia Hardy, but apparently, Raimi's Felicia Hardy will not become The Black Cat as in the comics. Instead, she will transform into a new villain, The Vulturess.

There's no official announcement yet; hopefully, we'll hear something more conclusive soon.

  • Concept Art and Photos from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
    Tim Burton

USA Today goes down the rabbit hole with Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and comes back up with some amazing pieces of eye candy. Alice, played by the Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, is glimpsed wandering in a garden populated by towering mushrooms and flowers with human faces, not to mention being checked out amid some surreal topiary by The White Rabbit. We also get a look the rather disturbing-looking twins, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who resemble giant bloated versions of Pugsly from The Addams Family.

To go along with all this, the studio has also released some appropriately surreal promo photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as The White Queen. The latter two characters are actually drawn from the Wonderland sequel, Through the Looking Glass, so clearly Burton is aiming to give the Lewis Carroll classic his own unique spin.

The USA Today article drops some hints about the direction of these changes, noting that Burton's version features a more grown-up Alice, who begins her adventures by escaping from a snooty Victorian dinner party only to fall back into Wonderland. She had been there once before but for some reason doesn't remember a thing about it.

  • Robert Downey Jr. is the Antidote to Brad Pitt

Robert Downey Jr.Could Brad and Angie stop complaining about how hard it is to be famous? Could we all stop pretending that Benjamin Button deserves all these accolades? (See our review.)

Thankfully we have one Robert Downey Jr. to serve as a refreshing, rehabbed antidote to Brangelina. Downey participated in a Newsweek Oscar roundtable with Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway, Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella, and Sally Hawkins. Pitt does his usual being-me-is-so-hard-I-have-no-privacy-I-just-get-to-impregnate-Angelina thing, says he's never Googled himself, and says he doesn't even know how to use a computer (who is he, John McCain?).

The others pretty much confer with him, except for Downey who admits to Googling himself and says, "Oh, I love all that s*** personally. Sorry. I just love it. Because it's a hoot. Some people overstate their support, like they know you. Other people are busy doing something else and just want to go on this chat site and say some despicable character assassination, which I honestly think they kind of nailed it. I do have that shortcoming. It's really fun."

Downey's refreshing honesty continues later in the roundtable when he says, "Lately for me, the biggest, most commercial projects that I've done are the most creatively satisfying, the most collaborative and the ones that the audiences respond to."

We love a good indie as much of the next person, but after losing hours of our life to some of this year's dismal wannabe-prestige pics (you know who you are), it's nice to hear that Downey doesn't take it, or himself, as seriously as some of his cohorts. This bodes well for Iron Man 2.

  • Airline Shopping for Passengers

Passengers It's not the same as raiding Miranda Priestly's or Anna Wintour's legendary designer closet, but Anne Hathaway fans can purchase the glasses, shoes, bathrobe, and other clothing and accesories the actress wore in Passengers. All items come with the official wardrobe tag attached. And not to leave out the gentlemen, many of Patrick Wilson's items are also on the block.

On second thought, you'll probably find more stylish offerings at Skymall.

  • Steve Carell’s Got Good Kicks
    Jill Simonian

Jill Simonian is a correspondent for Dailies (ReelzChannel TV, weeknights @ 6PM ET), and occasionally shares stories from the field. This week: Get Smart

Ok. So Steve Carell kisses Dwayne Johnson in Get Smart. Thought I'd get that out of the way. More about that later though. This one's about Steve's kicks.

As in SHOES. No, I'm not referring to Maxwell Smart's famously absurd shoe-phone-gadgets from the '60s TV show. Turns out that Carell himself has good shoes. Anne Hathaway told him so on the day of our recent junket interviews for the movie. And thanks to their antics together in Get Smart, I am officially "Carell-ed Away." (And so is Dwayne Johnson! Ha!)

Back to the junket: Earlier that day, Anne told us that she learned much on-set about comedy from working with Steve and Alan Arkin (2006's Little Miss Sunshine's 'grandpa'... also in Smart).

So, when I asked Steve about "what he learned" from working with Anne, he simply teased "her inner beauty and fashion sense," followed by a chuckle. Seriously, he cited her talent, kindness, obvious good looks, and gushed about her staggering ability to whip out super-high kicks -- as her own stunt double -- in some of the movie's powerhouse action scenes involving 7'2" two-time Mr. India bodybuilder, Dalip Singh. (Note: watching Steve go against this giant is classic Carell!) But Steve was also excited to boast that -- on the day of our interviews -- Anne complimented him for the very first time on a fashion choice... his new white sneakers. Cute.

But the real question is: Are they equipped to make international calls?

Get Smart opens nationwide Friday, June 20.

    Get more from Dailies.
