  • Christian Charles Philip Bale (also known professionally as Christian Morgan Bale; born 30 January 1974) is a Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated, Saturn Award-winning Welsh-born English actor whose film credits include Empire of the Sun, American Psycho, Equilibrium, The Machinist, Batman Begins and the upcoming The Dark Knight. Bale is known for his mastery of accents and harsh regimens of shedding and gaining weight (particularly for The Machinist, Batman Begins and, most recently, Rescue Dawn). Before he found success in playing Batman, he was heavily involved in independent film. Bale first caught the public eye when he was cast in the starring role of Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun at the age of 13, playing an English boy who becomes separated from his parents and subsequently finds himself in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Since then, he has portrayed a wide range of characters. Bale is especially noted for his cult following. The tenth anniversary issue... full article at wikipedia

  • Kevin Smith Would Like Some Hamm with His Superman or Batman

Kevin SmithWriter-director, and genuine comic book geek, Kevin Smith told MTV that he thinks actor Jon Hamm has serious superhero potential.

That dude could play Batman and Superman. "That's the weird thing. You look at him and he's got a f---ing Superman look, but he's got a Batman thing going on, too.

A few years ago, they were like, "Let's do that Batman/Superman movie." Do it. Hire that motherf***er to play both roles.... He could pull it off. I'd buy it.

Smith was convinced of Hamm's superhero quality by watching Hamm's work as ad executive Don Draper on Mad Men.

He's always brooding on that show. He comes off like Bruce Wayne. That voice of his — the Don Draper voice — that's f***ing Batman! If you were in an alley and that motherf***er Jon Hamm was wearing that outfit and came up to you and he was like, "Gimme a cigarette," you'd be like, "Oh my god, I'm going to give up crime ... and living!"

Sadly, for Smith at least, Christian Bale will be playing Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman 3, should it ever get made . Smith can keep his fingers crossed for Hamm to play Superman. Warner Bros. has "no current plans" to make one, though.

  • Sam Worthington Takes Terminator Salvation Criticism to Heart

Sam WorthingtonSamWorthington may be one of the busiest actors working right now, but that doesn't mean he isn't paying attention, especially to criticism hurled at Terminator Salvation. Worthington, unlike many actors, admits he reads what the critics say and took it to heart:

It's kind of humbling, the way that they describe your performance against Christian's [Bale], but we have no control over that. We just have to do the best character that we can do at that time.

We don't necessarily have the bounce of a theater, but we have the critics online, we have our critics in the newspaper, so I do take it all onboard in order to kind of go, "Well, you know, they're the ones paying 12 bucks. I've got to kind of just step up my game, or Sam Worthington has to change this." Or I will [say], "F**k it, I'll change that or back up the criticism that I get thrown out." "Why did you do this?" Well I can now back up everything. Because that, to me, that helps my profession and links what I believe is, you know, what my job is. To entertain people.

Worthington also claims the Terminator criticism will make him more cautious in the future:

I can nitpick with the best of them, man, and kind of go down the list of things I saw on IMDB where they found holes in it, and go, "You are f**king right." If there was a big 10-ton robot coming outside that gas station, surely we would f**king hear it. And I missed that. So I'm going to be a bit better when I'm looking through my f**king scripts. So it raises my game a bit, because now I feel like an idiot for not saying it to [Salvation director] McG, you know?

Worthington will appear next in Avatar, which opens December 19.

  • Security Tightened on the Set of The Fighter

Amy AdamsApparently, having tough-guy actors like Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg around isn't enough to deter a curious fan from trying to sneak a peek at their co-star, Amy Adams, while in her trailer on the set of The Fighter.

According to RadarOnline.com, shortly after 1,500 extras participated in a major boxing scene at Paul Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts, an unidentified man climbed the stairs to Adams' trailer and stuck his head inside. Adams, who was speaking with a production worker inside the trailer, was startled and scared the intruder off by yelling at him. The man ran off and is currently at large. In the wake of the incident, security around the set has been tightened.

Inspired by a true story, The Fighter tells the story of "Irish" Mickey Ward (played by Wahlberg) and his half-brother and trainer, Dickie Eklund (Bale), who fought former world champion Sugar Ray Leonard in 1978. With the assistance of Ecklund, Ward fought throughout the '80s and 90s and his fights against Arturo Gotti are considered some of the greatest in boxing history. Adams plays Charlene, a tough bartender and former athlete who falls in love with Wahlberg's character.

  • Public Enemies Driving Fans to the Grave

Due to renewed interest in Depression-era folk hero and renowned bank robber John Dillinger that the movie Public Enemies has generated, his grave at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis is seeing an upsurge in visits.

Dillinger, born in Indianapolis, was "Public Enemy No. 1" in the early 30's because of his string of bank robberies in the Midwest. Dillinger was shot to death outside of a Chicago theater and was laid to rest in the family plot where his mother and grandparents were buried. Crown Hill Cemetary president Keith Norwalk said that fans of Dillinger have been visiting his grave for years:

We're on the fourth marker for his grave. In former years, people would come and chip off corners.

Directed by Michael Mann, Public Enemies stars Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as his nemesis, Melvin Purvis, Special Agent with the FBI.

  • Bale Praises His Public Enemies Director (and Guns)

Director Michael Mann's (Heat, Hancock) latest movie, Public Enemies, opens nationwide today. The movie, a period piece that was shot in many of the actual locations for events fictionalized in the movie, recounts the manhunt for notorious bank robber John Dillinger (played by Johnny Depp) by Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), Special Agent with the FBI.

Mann has credited the generous incentives offered by the state of Wisconsin at the time of filming as part of the reason behind his decision to film there for six weeks. According to a recent interview with Bale, working with Mann was one of his incentives for signing up for Public Enemies:

Michael Mann is one of the finest filmmakers around. His ability to excel at all aspects of filmmaking is stunning. I loved his thoroughness.

I loved the research and his attention to detail. This is a director who has a unique perception of what every actor is doing at all moments.

However, it wasn't just the chance to work with a four-time Academy Sward-nominated director that appealed to Bale; he liked the guns, as well:

It was the last dying breath of the guns that had some character to them. I know the guns we have nowadays are absolutely fatal and have incredible precision. But back in this era, you had the guns where you could smell the shots afterwards.

I have to say that I enjoyed carrying them around with me.

  • Amy Adams in Talks to Star in The Fighter with Bale and Wahlberg

Amy AdamsVariety reports that Amy Adams is in negotiations to star in The Fighter alongside Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Melissa Leo, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Frozen River.

Due for release sometime in 2011, The Fighter is being directed by David O. Russell, who helmed I Heart Huckabees, Three Kings, Spanking the Monkey, and the upcoming political comedy Nailed starring Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal. The Fighter is based on the true story of "Irish" Micky Ward, a boxer from South Boston who rose to prominence on the welterweight circuit during the mid-1980s.

Wahlberg will portray Ward, while Bale will play Ward's half-brother, Dicky Eklund, who recovered from drug addiction to help guide Ward's career. Leo will portray Ward's mother. If cast, Adams would play the part of a bartender who develops a romantic relationship with Ward.

Adams's other upcoming projects include Julie & Julia, in which she will star opposite Meryl Streep. She also recently finished filming for Anand Tucker's romantic comedy Leap Year.

  • Public Enemies Author Praises Mann's Film

Public EnemiesReaders are often disappointed by Hollywood's attempts to turn their favorite books into films. For every success — The Notebook — there are dozens of films that simply don't live up to the source material, such as most Stephen King adaptations. But, it's not just the fans that feel slighted when a poor film is made from a great book. From Alan Moore (Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) to Ursala K. Le Guin (Earthsea), disappointed and disillusioned authors have been very vocal in condemning films they believe are not true to their source material.

However, that is not the case with Michael Mann's latest film. Partially based on the book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34 by Bryan Burrough, the film follows FBI Special Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) and his attempt to capture the infamous bank-robber-turned Depression-era-hero John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). Burrough recently wrote an article praising Mann's adaptation and the historical accuracy of the film:

This is the first Dillinger and the first gangster movie I'm aware of that takes great pains to get not only the details but the sites right. Mann not only shot at the actual scene of Dillinger's greatest jailbreak, the lockup in Crown Point, Ind., but at the actual scene of his greatest shootout, at the Little Bohemia lodge. Somehow he prevailed upon Chicago to hand over six entire blocks of North Lincoln Avenue, where Dillinger memorably met his fate outside the Biograph Theater one hot night in July 1934.

    Burrough went on to say:

Yes, I know it's just a movie, and I know most in the audience won't especially care that the details are historically accurate, but I can vividly remember looking around and smiling nevertheless, happy that, in this one small case at least, Hollywood was getting it right.

  • Bale Snubs Depp on the Set of Public Enemies

Actor Christian Bale seems to set himself up for controversy with every move he makes. First, there were those nasty stories about domestic abuse following the opening of The Dark Knight. Then there was his infamous f-bomb rant on the set of Terminator Salvation. Now it appears that Bale snubbed his Public Enemies co-star, Johnny Depp, during the filming of director Michael Mann's John Dillinger action flick.

In a recent interview , Bale said:

I wish to not talk unless we're doing the scene. I enjoy it that way.

Despite recent rumors that Bale and Depp discussed working together on a sequel to The Dark Knight while filming Public Enemies, Bale said that they "didn't get to know each other" during filming.

Public Enemies is a fictional retelling of the hunt by Melvin Purvis (Bale), Special Agent with the FBI, for notorious bank robber and Depression-era folk hero, John Dillinger (Depp).

  • Christian Bale Loses Weight for The Fighter

Christian BaleWith Terminator Salvation dominating the (overseas) box office and Public Enemies opening July 1, it's hard to believe that Christian Bale took a year off from acting. However, Bale's ready to step back into the ring in more ways than one as he plays Mark Wahlberg's boxer-training brother in The Fighter. Bale described the movie to Collider.

It's a true story of two incredibly gifted boxers who were half brothers. The one, Dicky Ecklund, who fought Sugar Ray Leonard at a very young age, when he was twenty one, was an incredible natural talent. He lived a very hard life. Then he came to train his brother, Irish Mickey Ward, to the world title.

The role meant some serious dieting, which Bale explained to MTV.

I've had to [lose] a great deal of weight because he was a welterweight.

Bale has lost and gained weight for roles several times in his career, at one point dropping 62 pounds for The Machinist before gaining it all back and more for Batman Begins. Bale is using fairly conventional methods for his weight loss this time around:

There’s nothing like boxing for getting you in shape. It’s a wonderful thing when your trainer is actually the person you’re playing.

Production on The Fighter starts in July, releasing sometime in 2011. David O. Russell will direct.

  • Behind the Scenes of Public Enemies with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Michael Mann
    Public Enemies

The folks at Cinema Blend have posted a fascinating behind-the-scenes clip in which Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and director Michael Mann discuss the mythology and the history behind Public Enemies.

The movie is based on the Bryan Burrough book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34, which tells the stories behind the rise and fall of Chicago gangster John Dillinger (Depp) in the 1930s.  FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Bale) pursued Dillinger and eventually gunned him down outside the Biograph Theater at the age of 31.

In this clip, Depp, Bale, and Mann talk about how the economic hardships of the Great Depression allowed Dillinger and his escapades to be seen as heroic rather than criminal. They even get into Dillinger's psychology, explaining why he might have lived the lifestyle he did.

And yes, there are plenty of tantalizing shots from the movie itself, some of which we hadn't seen before.

We've got a curious case of mixed messages. While on the junket promoting their mobster flick Public Enemies, mega-stars Christian "Batman" Bale and Johnny "Rumored Riddler" Depp were asked about their participation in the continuing Batman movie franchise.

    Public Enemies

The first full clip from Michael Mann's Public Enemies is now online. Just follow the link here.

The scene is a full-blown night shoot-out complete with tommy guns, broken glass, and a heck of a lot of bullet holes. FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) and his team attempt an ambush outside the forest hideout of gangster John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). In terms of style, the scene seems to borrow not only from Scarface (the 1932 Howard Hawks version), but also the first big shoot-out scene in The Godfather: Part II, which sees Al Pacino diving for cover indoors while shooters ambush from a wooded area outside.

Public Enemies is based on the Bryan Burrough book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34, which tells the stories behind the rise and fall of Dillinger in the 1930s. Melvin Purvis pursued Dillinger and eventually gunned him down outside the Biograph Theater at the age of 31.

  • Christopher Nolan May Not Return for Batman 3

The Dark KnightChristian Bale has already bemoaned that he is contractually obligated to return for Batman 3 whether Christopher Nolan is involved or not. While Nolan and writer David Goyer have been discussing possible story ideas for some time, Bale may be without the director that revitalized the Batman franchise with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

According to a source speaking with Batman-on-Film, it took a lot of convincing to bring Nolan back for The Dark Knight, but after Heath Ledger's tragic death, it may be impossible to convince the director to come back again. The source confirmed that Nolan, Goyer, and Jonathan Nolan have discussed story ideas, but had originally intended for the Joker to return in Batman 3, creating a problem they have not been able to solve. So far, no decisions have been made regarding the story for Batman 3, pushing the movie's release until 2012 or, possibly, 2013.

Nolan is currently working on Inception, his sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Obviously, fans would love to have Nolan return for the third Batman, but until Nolan's involvement is official, they will have to find solace in a report from February that said Nolan's studio deal for Inception included an agreement to make Batman 3. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Terminator Salvation Still #1 at the (Overseas) Box Office

Terminator SalvationFor the second week in a row, Terminator Salvation has dominated the box office in almost every country but the United States. Even against the two-time, domestic box office winner The Hangover, Terminator Salvation finished first. This brings its international total to $165.5 million after two weeks, compared to $114 million in the U.S. after nearly four weeks.

So why has Terminator Salvation not performed better in the U.S.? Perhaps changing the original ending was a mistake. Director McG revealed Salvation's initial ending to Entertainment Weekly (WARNING: SPOILERS):

[John] Connor (Christian Bale) dies, okay? He's dead. And Marcus (Sam Worthington) offers his physical body, so Connor's exterior is put on top of his machine body. It looks like Connor, but it's really Marcus underneath. And all of the characters we care about (Kyle Reese, Connor's wife Kate, etc.) are brought into the room to see him and they think it's Connor. And Connor gets up and then there's a small flicker of red in his eyes and he shoots Kate, he shoots Kyle, he shoots everybody in the room. Fade to black. End of movie. Skynet wins. F--- you!

Bale loved the ending. The studio signed off on it. So why the change? "In the end, it just felt like too much of a bummer," McG explained, before pausing. "Maybe we blew it."

Well, not in most of the world.

  • Terminator Salvation's Bale Wants to Know the Future but Not McG and Worthington

Terminator SalvationIn the "Information Age," what is more valuable than insight? Imagine the possibilities if you could see the future. But would you really want that knowledge?

The stars of Terminator Salvation were recently asked if they would like to know the future and some of their answers were surprising:

The film's star, Christian Bale, said:

Of course I would want to hear about it. I'm not sure how I'd be able to handle it, but who wouldn't? I would, actually. I would love to hear it.

Sam Worthington, who plays a human-Terminator hybrid in the film, said:

Not particularly, no. I think the best thing about living on this big ball of mud is that we don't know what's going to happen. We don't even know why we're here. So having that kind of knowledge of what's to come, I think, is quite frightening. I like seeing where this adventure takes me.

    Director McG said:

I would not want to know the future. I think it would take the mystery out of life. And I like being surprised. And you take your lumps. And you take your victories. And you keep on rolling. I think that's part of what makes the joy of every day.

Terminator Salvation also stars Anton Yelchin as a young Kyle Reece, Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor, and Moon Bloodgood as Blair Williams.

  • A Bad Attitude Can't Stop Terminator Salvation

    Terminator Salvation

Christian Bale has had enough. In addition to the negative press that Terminator Salvation seems to have generated due to the unfortunate professional name chosen by director Joseph "McG" McGinty Nichol, the spotlight of criticism has been aimed at the film's star and his off-screen behavior on several occasions.

Bale has made the news several times in the past year following volatile public statements and domestic disturbances. And, his Terminator Salvation set rant, rife with f-bombs, was such a popular download that the secretly released audio, set to thumping club music, has received over 3 million views on YouTube.com.

Bale, initially unapologetic, eventually went on live radio to ask forgiveness for his behavior. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bale explained:

I was being told how it had gone like wildfire, and I was worried that it could completely overwhelm the movie itself. There's so much hard work that's gone into this. We had 77 days of smooth running and four minutes of me just going way too far -- and that shouldn't characterize the making of the movie. My concern was that people would unfairly judge the movie based on my bad behavior.

When asked if he was worried about what people would think of him, Bale said:

I don't feel like I have to explain, ''Well, I'm not really like this. I'm a wonderful guy and I have a lovely smile and how can you not like me?''

Bale also deflected questions about McG and some of the criticisms aimed at him in a characteristic manner:

Look, all of the stuff with my behavior and what people f---ing think of McG, none of that should matter a damn to anyone. They just want a damn good movie.

Terminator SalvationAfter the successful reinvention of the Star Trek mythology by director J.J. Terminator Salvation opens this week, yet many of the popular topics of conversation around the opening focus on the director's hip-hopesque nickname.

McG, whose real name is Joseph McGinty Nichol, is tired of the constant controversy over his name. He told Entertainment Weekly:

If you can't get past my name after 12 years in this industry, you're not invited.

If you don't have the hustle to figure out that McG's short for "McGinty," which is my mother's maiden name, and that she's the least funky person ever, I'm kind of done. My name won't define my movies. My movies will define my name.

  • Bale Almost Passed on Terminator Salvation

Terminator SalvationTerminator Salvation opens in less than a week and you would think that the star, Christian Bale, would be out hyping the movie. Instead, he told Entertainment Weekly that he almost didn't make the movie:

I went, "No, I don't even have to read this." I just thought, the mythology is dead. I mean, I did flick through (the script), because you can always be surprised. But I wasn't surprised by what I read in that one.

Apparently, it took an impromptu visit from McG to convince Bale that it was a project he needed to be a part of. Bale said:

I had people telling me, "Don't do it, Christian. Don't go with that guy." In a strange way, I like the fact that he keeps that name because it does him no friggin' favors. But people hear it and they go, "F--- him!" People were telling me, "Christian, you're too good for Terminator." And I'm thinking, "I'm too good?" I'm not a snob. I really f---ing enjoy watching a good action movie. Who do you think I am?!

In Terminator Salvation, Bale plays John Connor, the man destined to lead the human resistance against Skynet's army of terminators. The film also stars Anton Yelchin as a young Kyle Reece, the man who traveled back in time in The Terminator to save Sarah Connor (and ends up fathering John Conner), and Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, a human-terminator hybrid.

  • 3 New Public Enemies Teaser Posters

Ryan ReynoldsUniversal has released three new teaser posters for Michael Mann's Public Enemies, starting the build up for the movie's July 1 release. The posters feature full-frame stills of stars Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Marion Cotillard. You can see large versions of them here.

Based on Bryan Burrough's book, Public Enemies dramatizes the rise and fall of 1930's Chicago gangster John Dillinger (Depp). Dillinger was pursued by FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Bale) and gunned down outside the Biograph Theater at the age of 31. Cotillard plays Dillinger's girlfriend, Billie Frechette, who sometimes drove his getaway car.

Universal has just released two new TV spots for Michael Mann's Public Enemies, which opens July 1.

As expected, there's lots of crass attitude, usually in the form of tommy-gun fire. The second spot in particular feels very Scarface (the '30s version) or Bonnie and Clyde, with emphasis not only on explosive violence, but also the spectacle of gangster celebrity.

  • McG Talks Terminator Salvation Casting Choices

Terminator SalvationJoseph "McG" McGinty Nichol has come a long way from his humble beginnings shooting still photos of local bands in Newport Beach, California. McG's still photography led to him shooting music videos and music documentaries before Hollywood came a-calling in the form of Drew Barrymore's big-screen adaptation of the classic TV series Charlie's Angels.

The McG-directed films Charlie's Angels and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle were both financial successes, but McG immediately tried to distance himself from those films in favor of "more substantial material." If McG's latest project, Terminator Salvation, is even half as good as the trailers, the film's release should obliterate any further references to Angels when discussing McG's work.

There are many elements that go into making a film both a critical and a financial success, but arguably one of the most important factors is hiring the right actors to bring the story to life. In a recent interview, McG was asked about some of his Terminator Salvation casting decisions. About Christian Bale, McG said:

I wanted him to play Marcus, but he was more interested in playing Connor, and we went about the business of working on the script. Christian Bale is so passionate about acting and about his craft. He has no entourage. He's got no assistant. He is about the work. That's who he is. And, to work with an actor who's that focused and that intense, is to all of our benefit.

McG goes on to discuss casting Bryce Dallas Howard and Moon Bloodgood:

I took one look at Bryce, and I know a thing or two about her upbringing and who she is as a young lady, and I thought that she was effectively a wonderful First Lady choice for this world. Then, you take a look at Moon, and Moon, to me, is the third leg of that triangle of Ripley and Sarah Connor. Moon can damn well do one-handed pull-ups on a psychiatric bed, turned upside down, and that's following in the footsteps of Sarah Connor. She is a survivor and she doesn't have a rich uncle in Hollywood. She's got to pick herself up by her own boot straps and make it happen, and I responded to that. I said, "I believe you would be the last woman standing, so come be a part of this."

Terminator Salvation also stars Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reece and Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, a human-Terminator hybrid.

  • McG Talks Terminator Salvation

Terminator: SalvationHow does a native of Michigan and the director of Charlie's Angels go about convincing the world that he's the man to update and expand upon the Terminator franchise? Well, according to director McG himself, through diligence and respect for the source material and the audience.

McG is painfully aware of the criticism aimed at him and his career path, but he's unapologetic about his past. In a recent interview, McG said:

You've got to earn your stripes and pay your dues, and I'm certainly willing to earn mine. Fortunately, I'm most comfortable in this genre, ironically. These are the films that I grew up on. This was my film school. This was my passion. So, I'm very comfortable working in this world. You just take the good with the bad, and you take your lumps along the way. On this picture, I tried to get away from being a cheerleader and really just let the film do the talking.

McG went on to explain that the fan base and respect for the audience were even important in making decisions about how the film was shot:

One of the things that we wanted to do, in this picture, was honor the audience and the passionate by staging and blocking the picture in a way that wasn't reliant upon cuts. I think cutting is a bit of a cheat, when say there's a bunch of cameras on the scene and you cut it together and make it work in post. We chose to go and scout the locations. Christian was a good sport, and we blocked the action very succinctly. The camera swings around to see a transport ship of Skynet flying away, Christian runs over to a helicopter and the pilot's been killed, and he gets in the helicopter to take off, all without a cut. The camera is now moving with him. The hole down below explodes, the helicopter crashes, he cuts himself out of the seatbelt, and crawls out to see a mushroom cloud, which is effectively the ashes of all the people he cares about, until he's interrupted with the hand on the shoulder of a T600. There were no cuts. And, we do that a great many times in the picture, in the spirit of saying, "We honor you, audience."

Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale as John Connor, the man destined to lead the human resistance against Skynet's army of Terminators, Anton Yelchin as a young Kyle Reece, and Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, a human-Terminator hybrid. It has also been rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger will make a brief appearance in the movie, thanks to CGI technology and stock footage from The Terminator (1984).

  • Hints and Revelations in New Terminator Salvation Trailer and Clips

The new four-minute-long Terminator Salvation trailer provides the most detailed look yet at this new vision of the world after Judgment Day. There are lots more action sequences and longer versions of some scenes from earlier trailers and TV spots. More surprisingly, there's a lot more extended narrative and dialogue -- and more than a few spoilers.

And if that's not enough, there are two new clips from the movie, both highlighting internal conflicts in the resistance. In the first, we see John Connor (Christian Bale) struggling to convince others in the resistance that Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) is worth saving. In the other, we are treated to a nice display of how Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood) responds to sexual harassment.

  • The Fine Line Between Human and Machine in New Terminator Salvation TV Spots

Terminator SalvationTwo new TV spots with new footage and plot details from Terminator Salvation explore the difficulty of telling human from machine in a world where machines have clearly been thinking a bit too much.

"What should I tell them when I find out you're gone?" John Connor (Christian Bale) is asked in the first of the spots. His answer, of course, is "I'll be back."

The first time we heard that line though, it wasn't coming from a human, so it is only natural that in the second spot, Connor ponders the question "What is the difference between us and the machines?" It is hardly an easy or abstract question for him or others in the Resistance. He confesses, "I looked in its eyes and it believes that it is human." And the issue is an even more intensely personal one for the "it" in question, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), as we see him struggle with what he is and who (or what) did it to him. Along the way are also some first glimpses of Wright's complex relationship with Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood), who helps make the case for his humanity.

  • Bale Talks Public Enemies and a Third Batman

Christian BaleDespite his recent string of public embarrassments, Christian Bale is easily one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood today. His gravel-voiced Batman helped The Dark Knight break the billion-dollar mark and he's about to help relaunch the Terminator franchise.

Hot on the heels of portraying John Connor, leader of the human resistance against the machines in Terminator Salvation, Bale will portray Melvin Purvis, Special Agent with the FBI in Public Enemies. Directed by Michael Mann (Heat), Public Enemies details the hunt for notorious bank robber and Depression-era folk hero, John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bale had this to say about filming the famous FBI raid on the Little Bohemia Lodge in Wisconsin:

I fired so many bullets in those woods in the middle of the night, I was literally tasting metal for a week afterwards.

But, what has fans really chomping at the bit is the prospect of Bale reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in a sequel to The Dark Knight. Bale told TotalFilm.com:

Will we do a third movie? It's got to be the right story. You can't make something like The Dark Knight and then come out with something disappointing. The fact is, I have to! I've signed up! Chris doesn't. So I'm in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn't want to!

After Public Enemies, Bale will star in Bryan Singer's Prisoners alongside Mark Wahlberg.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger May Appear in Terminator Salvation

    Schwarzenegger

Terminator Salvation will debut in theaters in less than a month, but the producers are still contemplating the addition of at least one more character to the film: the original Terminator, made famous by actor-turned-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger admitted to meeting with Terminator Salvation director McG, but said that he turned down a cameo appearance. However, in a recent webcast interview with the "Governator," Schwarzenegger said that he was open to the possibility of his Terminator appearing via digital means:

I said that I would be willing to be in the movie if they get the technology together, and so they are working on that right now.

The planned scene with Schwarzenegger would incorporate existing footage from 1984's The Terminator and not require the filming of new footage.

Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale as John Connor, the man destined to lead the human resistance against Skynet's army of Terminators; Anton Yelchin as a young Kyle Reece (who fathers John Connor in the past, during Terminator); and Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, a human-Terminator hybrid.

  • Anton Yelchin Saves the Future (Twice)!
    Anton Yelchin

Actor Anton Yelchin has the weight of the world on his shoulders. As a star in two of this year's biggest "event" films, Star Trek and Terminator Salvation, Yelchin has a part in shaping the future of two franchise reboots.

Russian by birth, Yelchin, celebrated for his role as Bobby Garfield in Hearts in Atlantis, is a natural to fill the role of Pavel Chekov, the upbeat young Russian crew member aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise in the Star Trek relaunch.

However, with little action picture experience behind him, how will Yelchin fare as the once-and-future super-soldier Reese (brilliantly played by Michael Biehn in the original Terminator) in Terminator Salvation? When asked what he hopes to bring to the role, Yelchin said:

He's going through the normal teenage stages of being a young man, but he's going through them in a post-apocalyptic environment, being followed around by Terminators who are trying to kill him. So, taking that approach, what are the issues he's dealing with? Where can I show the hero? Where can I show the vulnerable person? The angry young man? Incorporating all of these elements really allows you to create the kind of character that hopefully is very interesting to watch and is just as likable as the original.

  • Terminator Salvation Toned Down for PG-13 Rating

The fourth film in the Terminator franchise will debut in theaters in just under two months, yet there is still no official rating for the film…or is there? Director McG has lobbied hard for an "R" rating in the past, citing the original films as precedent, but the producers of the film have been pressuring McG to cut certain scenes so that the film could receive a "PG-13" rating, which, they hope, will help broaden the fan base for the film.

In an interview with Movies Online, McG said:

"We want to make the best film possible. We just don’t care about the rating. We don’t aim for the rating and we’ve been given the freedom by the head of the studio to just make the best picture possible. That’s very, very freeing. We’re just going to make the movie."

However, the decision to tone down the sex (reportedly, Moon Bloodgood, who plays Blair Williams, a tough human pilot with a Terminator crush, filmed a topless scene) and violence may have already been made. According to the Pizza Hut cross-promotional site, the latest film in the Terminator franchise has a "PG-13" rating. Is this a screw-up or has McG lost the "war of the (corporate) machines" and edited his film for the younger set? Due to this slip-up, the answer is likely to be forthcoming,

Terminator Salvation synopsis courtesy of Warner Bros.:

"Terminator Salvation" is set in post-apocalyptic 2018, where John Connor (Christian Bale) is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind."

  • Terminator Salvation Stars to Swap Batman Role?

BatmanRumors about the third Batman movie are nothing new, and with director Christopher Nolan hard at work on his sci-fi thriller Inception, it's hard to believe anything written about a Batman 3 until Nolan or Warner Bros. make an official announcement. However, the Herald Sun reports that instead of Christian Bale returning as Batman, it could be his Terminator Salvation co-star Sam Worthington in the black cowl for the next movie.

Why Bale would require replacing is curious, but the Herald Sun speculates that Bale's angry, expletive-filled, on-set outburst may have damaged his profile, necessitating a change. Of course, Worthington, like the Herald Sun, is Australian, so perhaps they're just creating a rumor to help boost what could be their country's next breakout star, with Worthington not only opening Salvation this May but also James Cameron's Avatar in December.

What do you think? Should Bale get replaced?

  • McG Defends Bale's Outburst, Gives Away Terminator Spoiler

Terminator: SalvationChristian Bale has already apologized for his outburst on the set on Terminator Salvation which became an internet sensation. Now director McG has come to his star's defense.

People reports that McG told fans at the recent New York Comic-Con, "The film set is a passionate place, and it happens. It was just sort of a blowup. We let it run its course, and it did."

McG agrees with Bale that the blow up with Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut did not halt the movie's production. "It's a matter of fact that he and Shane are buddies. We finished the movie together. We did some additional photography about a month ago."

But defending Bale was not the only thing McG talked about at the Comic-Con. He also practically confirmed an appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator Salvation. "The T-800s as we know them look like Arnold. The T-800 plays a big role in this movie. I can't quite tell you how we express that -- Let me just hint at this: I don't want today's Arnold Schwarzenegger."

So, Arnold is digitized in the movie? McG could borrow Benjamin Button's special effects to create a 1984 Arnold, which could be effective and ironic.

  • Christian Bale Apologizes For On-Set Outburst

Christian BaleAfter making headlines with his angry, expletive-filled rant from the set of Terminator Salvation, Christian Bale called into Los Angeles radio station KROQ to apologize about his fit:

The thing that I really want to stress is I have no confusion whatsoever. I was out of order beyond belief. I was way out of order. I acted like a punk. I regret that. And there is nobody that has heard that tape that is hit harder by it than me. I make no excuses for it. It is inexcusable. And I hope that is absolutely clear.

Bale says he was trying to reach into a crazy place for the scene he was portraying:

On the day that all of this happened, the scene that we were doing, I was trying to show a little of that in-the-blood craziness. And you know what? It went very wrong...I got annoyed. And then what happened? I made it ugly. And that was awful of me. I took it way too far and I completely confused fact and fiction.

Bale says the incident was handled "that day" between himself and the director of photography he screamed at, Shane Hurlbut, with the two working together for another month afterwards. What Bale worries about most is that his outburst will talk audiences out of watching the movie:

Hey, I know a number of people are gonna be thinking they don't want to go see the movie because they think I'm some kind of prima donna or something. It ain't that. Just maybe sometimes I care too much about the movie. Everybody worked so hard on this movie. Please do not allow my one-time lapse in judgment, my incredibly embarrassing meltdown to overshadow this movie.

  • Christian Bale Parodies Already Flooding the Web

Christian BaleWhat's worse than walking across the set when Christian Bale is engaged in a little professional acting? Substituting bagels for donuts at the craft table. Actually, we can kind of relate to the anger on display in this parody a lot more than we can to the anger on display in the original. After all, how angry should you be allowed to get when you're getting paid millions to play make-believe while being supervised by a grown man named McG? One F-bomb, at most, is really all that's warranted. But not having any donuts available when you're totally in the mood for donuts? In the tape found here, Bale lets loose a blistering rant where he cussed out director of photography Shane Hurlbut for crossing his line of sight during a scene.

The poor man was subjected to multiple F-bombs, called various names, and threatened with firing. If you aren't interested in tainting your tender ears to the whole tirade, here's a short sample.

I want you off the set! You prick! No, don't just be sorry! Think for one f--king second! What the f--k are you doing? Are you professional or not?

He was later cleared of any wrongdoing in the spat, but maybe an anger management class is in order?

  • Will it be Josh Brolin vs. Christian Bale in Terminator 4?

Josh Brolin, Terminator? With the recent casting of Christian Bale as the emo-punk-turned-leader-of-the-resistance John Connor in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the natural follow-up question arose: Who will play Bale's cyborg stalker in the fourth installment of the blockbuster sci-fi franchise? After all, this ain't no whiny pencil-neck Edward Furlong (or, if you prefer, T3's Nick Stahl) we're talking about; a robot capable of taking down Batman is gonna have to be seriously badass.

With that in mind, Jason Coleman of 213.net prodded T4 director McG for some answers and got this reply:

"It's very difficult to say because it's a decidedly masculine role and I think we're living in a time where a lot of actors are very effeminate and they're sort of skinny, heroin chic and there's really a masculine component to the role. And there's guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we'll see."

No "skinny" or "effeminate" actors? Guess that leaves Ryan Phillippe out of the running.

  • The real movie you should see this 4th of July

    Christian Bale as Dieter Dengler

Forget Transformers, the real must-see movie this Independence Day is Rescue Dawn, a war drama about a fighter pilot named Dieter Dengler who was captured and ultimately escaped from a Laotian prison camp during the Vietnam War. I saw this movie a few months ago and it is still with me. It is powerful, sad, and most of all, pretty accurate--which you'll find quite disturbing.

The always-talented Christian Bale (Batman Begins, American Psycho) is wonderful as usual as the irrepressible Dengler, and Jeremy Davies (Spanking the Monkey, Saving Private Ryan) is Holocaust-survivor thin and Charles-Manson crazy as his co-prisoner. But the best part may be getting to see the criminally underused Steve Zahn (Reality Bites, Saving Silverman) show off his remarkably ample acting chops.

Rescue Dawn opens in very limited release this Independence Day, with a national roll out to follow later in the month. Whether you can see it now or you have to wait a week or two, it should definitely be at the top of your "to see" list.
