  • Exit Tom Cruise, Enter Christian Bale?

Christian Bale, living godMuch is afoot in the world of director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger). First, Variety announced earlier today that the prolific Australian would be directing Tom Cruise in the cold war spy thriller Edwin A. Salt, about a CIA officer suspected of working with those sneaky Reds. Now, Moviehole is reporting that Cruise is opting out of another planned collaboration with Noyce, the political thriller The 28th Ammendment. But don't weep for poor Philip. Word is that none other than The Dark Knight star Christian Bale might be stepping in to replace Cruise in the lead role, as a newly-elected American president who discovers the truth about who really runs the U.S. government (hint: it's the Freemasons).

Nothing's been confirmed, of course, but it appears that the wheels are indeed in motion to get Bale on board.

    Works for us.

  • Will it be Josh Brolin vs. Christian Bale in Terminator 4?

Josh Brolin, Terminator? With the recent casting of Christian Bale as the emo-punk-turned-leader-of-the-resistance John Connor in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the natural follow-up question arose: Who will play Bale's cyborg stalker in the fourth installment of the blockbuster sci-fi franchise? After all, this ain't no whiny pencil-neck Edward Furlong (or, if you prefer, T3's Nick Stahl) we're talking about; a robot capable of taking down Batman is gonna have to be seriously badass.

With that in mind, Jason Coleman of 213.net prodded T4 director McG for some answers and got this reply:

"It's very difficult to say because it's a decidedly masculine role and I think we're living in a time where a lot of actors are very effeminate and they're sort of skinny, heroin chic and there's really a masculine component to the role. And there's guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we'll see."

No "skinny" or "effeminate" actors? Guess that leaves Ryan Phillippe out of the running.

  • Yuma too soon? Crowe peeved at Lionsgate

Crowe, as seen in South ParkThe Christian Bale/Russell Crowe western 3:10 to Yuma arrives in theaters this Friday, carrying with it a good deal of Oscar buzz. Which prompts the question: Why is it arriving in theaters this Friday? As most movie lovers know, studios traditionally reserve their awards fare for the last few months of the year, in order to ensure that Academy members don't forget them when Oscar ballots arrive. The decision release an Oscar contender like 3:10 to Yuma a week after Labor Day is leaving more than a few folks in Hollywood perplexed.

Count star Russell Crowe among them. According to a recent article in Slate, the mercurial Aussie is reportedly more than a little peeved at Lionsgate, the studio behind Yuma, for not pushing the release back to a more Oscar-appropriate date. (Click here to read the article). The folks at Lionsgate might want to be on the lookout for flying phones.

  • The real movie you should see this 4th of July

    Christian Bale as Dieter Dengler

Forget Transformers, the real must-see movie this Independence Day is Rescue Dawn, a war drama about a fighter pilot named Dieter Dengler who was captured and ultimately escaped from a Laotian prison camp during the Vietnam War. I saw this movie a few months ago and it is still with me. It is powerful, sad, and most of all, pretty accurate--which you'll find quite disturbing.

The always-talented Christian Bale (Batman Begins, American Psycho) is wonderful as usual as the irrepressible Dengler, and Jeremy Davies (Spanking the Monkey, Saving Private Ryan) is Holocaust-survivor thin and Charles-Manson crazy as his co-prisoner. But the best part may be getting to see the criminally underused Steve Zahn (Reality Bites, Saving Silverman) show off his remarkably ample acting chops.

Rescue Dawn opens in very limited release this Independence Day, with a national roll out to follow later in the month. Whether you can see it now or you have to wait a week or two, it should definitely be at the top of your "to see" list.
