  • Jon Favreau Won't Direct The Avengers

Jon FavreauJon Favreau has left hints that he'd be directing the upcoming Avengers movie for some time now, saying his involvement was "yet to be determined." It looks like fanboys let their hopes get away from them, though, as Favreau has now told MTV that his status is 100% determined ... and the decision is "no."

They'll have to [find a different director], because I'm not going to be available. It's something I'm being the executive producer on, so I'll definitely have input and a say.

It's going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with Avengers you're going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor. How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it's going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we've created.

Favreau also confirmed that Edward Norton will not be appearing as The Hulk in Iron Man 2, though Favreau says there will still be connections between Iron Man 2 and the other Avengers movies.

We want to reinforce a lot of the stuff we started to tip off ... The Avengers is a much larger concern for Marvel and Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel. They're going to be doing Thor and Captain America, and the way we might start to tease those things in this movie, some of it is stuff that we've discussed [and] some of the stuff you do last-minute as you figure out how that stuff is coming together. It's an evolving, amorphous thing. If we decide and commit too early, the secret always gets out. As soon as we shot the Nick Fury thing [in Iron Man] — we had a closed set and nobody was supposed to know about it — a week later somehow it was all over the internet.

While fans have to be disappointed with the news that Favreau's not directing The Avengers, Favreau certainly isn't. He thinks Avengers is in good hands with Feige.

That's why it's good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he'll be very involved with Thor and Cap. You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.

  • Edward Norton Open to Returning in The Avengers

Ed NortonSpeculation that the Hulk will appear in The Avengers began with Robert Downey Jr.'s cameo appearance at the end of The Incredible Hulk and built momentum when, at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Entertainment President Kevin Feige said "it's safe to assume that there will be some members of the Hulk universe" in the movie.

In the comics, the Hulk was the impetus for the team to unite in the first place. While Edward Norton has remained mysterious about if he will appear as the Hulk in Iron Man 2 or The Avengers in the past, he told MTV that he's open to a return in The Avengers.

Yeah, oh yeah. The thing about [Marvel's] universe that's fun is that it all cross-pollinates. Even when I was working on the script [for The Incredible Hulk], I tried to plug in the whole Super-Soldier Serum from Captain America.

MarvelNorton also told MTV that he likes the idea of Hulk as the villain.

Well, he kinda was [a villain]. In the comics, there was always a tension between the rest of the superhero community and he was always this problem.... They treated him as this problem. I think that's a fun way to go with it.

So, if Norton is such a fan of it all, why has he been so vague about a possible return?

I just get very busy. You have to deal with the demands of the moment. I tend to keep my head in the thing I'm doing, and I don't speculate or worry too much about what two or three blocks down the thing is gonna be. I know all these things will reveal themselves and work out or not.

  • Edward Norton Talks Possible Iron Man 2 Cameo

Ed NortonEdward Norton stayed cryptic when asked earlier about his possible appearance in The Avengers. But as to whether Norton's Hulk will make a cameo in Iron Man 2, Norton was less vague, telling MTV at the Toronto Film Festival that a Norton sighting is doubtful.

I heard that. I don't know where that's coming from. I am not in Iron Man 2 to my knowledge.

Norton still has yet to commit to star in The Incredible Hulk 2, but it's possible that Norton's giant CGI counterpart could alone appear.

  • Tim Blake Nelson and Gale Anne Hurd talk Hulk 2

The Incredible HulkWhile Edward Norton's future with The Incredible Hulk franchise may be in limbo, both Tim Blake Nelson and producer Gale Anne Hurd spoke positively to MTV about the future of the Hulk sequels. Hurd noted that having Nelson return in Hulk 2 as The Leader "would be a blast" and that Norton's involvement will "depend on the screenplay and where his character goes in any sequel, because he does have a multiple-picture deal."

Meanwhile, Nelson is pretty excited to battle Hulk in the upcoming sequel, with or without Norton. "When I agreed to do 'Hulk,' I signed off for two sequels, so it's a moot question. I certainly hope Edward is on the sequel -- but that's up to Marvel and Edward."

  • No More Hulk?
No more Hulk?Despite a solid box office tally and generally positive reviews, The Incredible Hulk might not spawn any sequels, says The Hollywood Reporter. After bursting out of the gate with a $55 million openening weekend, Edward Norton's franchise reboot sputtered in recent weeks, and will struggle to best the $245 million worldwide gross of its 2003 predecessor, Ang Lee's much-derided Hulk. And while Marvel couldn't wait to greenlight a sequel for Iron Man (even designating a 2010 release date, much to Jon Favreau's chagrin), they have yet to do so with The Incredible Hulk, prompting some analysts to wonder whether a follow-up will ever materialize. Looks like it might be "one and done" for Ed Norton's superhero career.

  • Trouble in Hulk-land?

Edward NortonOn the eve of MTV's teaser trailer debut of The Incredible Hulk, reports are emerging that Edward Norton's reboot of the Marvel franchise has encountered problems in the editing room. According to Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily, Norton, who served as a producer and co-writer on The Incredible Hulk in addition to playing the title role, is clashing mightily with Marvel Films execs over control of the flick's final cut. Says Finke's unnamed source: "There's a lot of posturing going on between Edward's camp and Marvel over how you edit the final version."

Curiously absent from the discussion is Hulk director Louis Leterrier, which makes us wonder what his current level of involvement is. Perhaps Norton (and his "camp" -- whatever that means) assumed directorial duties as well...

  • Something's fishy in State of Play

Things aren't starting out well for State of Play. First Brad Pitt dropped out, now Edward Norton is following suit.

Pitt departed the film just before Thanksgiving over script issues, which has left Universal quite displeased, and was replaced by Russell Crowe.

However, the official line is that Norton is dropping out over scheduling troubles. You see, when Crowe signed on, production got bumped to January, which evidently conflicted with Norton's plans to play the lead(s) in the comedy Leaves of Grass. Now Ben Affleck is in talks to replace Norton as the politician caught in a murder conspiracy.

Quite a lot of hullabaloo considering filming hasn't even started yet. Not what one calls a 'good omen.'

  • Edward Norton, Hulk Screenwriter?

One of the most interesting pieces of news from today's Marvel Studios Incredible Hulk panel was that Edward Norton, who plays Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the film, actually did triple duty as writer and both characters.

Through new technologies, Norton says that the Hulk looks more like him after transformation into the green beast, with looks that will allow the monster to be recognizable as Norton even after turning into everyone's favorite jolly green giant.

But the other piece of news that seemed to throw everyone in the full 6,500 Hall H panel for a loop was that Norton in fact wrote The Incredible Hulk.

While other writers worked on the script, Marvel producers confirm that Norton wrote the draft that was ultimately used, although we are not sure what perfentage was based on previous drafts.

So as many have wondered about the choice of Norton as Banner, the actor has confessed to not only being a comic fan, but to having the right ideas to do the story justice on the big screen this time around. If so, the esteemed actor will certain gain a whole new segment of fan base.

  • Live Updates from Marvel Studios Presentation

Still here in Hall H where I'm being held captive on this sunny Saturday and eagerly awaiting the Marvel Studios presentation.

We already saw footage from Iron Man at the Paramount Panel Thursday. In cast you didn't hear, it's some pretty incredible stuff. Word is there will be more coming at this presentation.

We'll also be hearing about the Incredible Hulk, which began filming two weeks ago in Toronto.

A nice selection from the cast and crew is here as well including director Louis Letterrier, producer Avi Arad and castmembers Edward Norton and Liv Tyler.

The first piece of news is that this will be the first in a series of Hulk films.

Norton mentions that he was one of the writers of the script, which is news to me and seems to come as a surprise to most everyone else in the room.

They show a very brief still of concept art which looks pretty cool. Everyone goes crazy.

Now it's time for Iron Man...

Cast and crew comes out including John Favreau in the Iron Man T-shirt we were given Thursday.

Favreau introduces Terrence Howard, who he says can't wait to play War Machine if the series continues. Now Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwenyth Paltrow come out.

They show the footage again and everyone goes crazy.

"I'm sorry, could there have been a little more of me in that," says Downey, Jr.

"What you saw there was all practical photography," says Favreau.

Stan Lee has just been brought out, with Favreau confirming that Lee will have his usual cameo in the movie.

"I took Stan to lunch at the grill in Beverly Hills," says Downey, Jr. "Now he can get a table there any time he wants... Basically I just followed what he said about why Iron Man came into being."

Lee talks about the lunch they had and the great booth they were given.

"They were just happy I wasn't in the bathroom the whole time," says Downey, Jr. to big laughs.

Question of the possibility of an Avengers movie one day?

They say that is definitely the plan, which is met with big applause.

  • New Hulk to be Grey?

Hulk smash!!!Our pal Frosty over at Collider.com tells us that the Hulk sequel starring Edward Norton will feature a grey-colored Hulk. For those of you who fear this is yet another example of Marvel honcho Avi Arad screwing up a franchise, it should be noted that this is not without precedent, as the grey-colored Hulk has a long history in the comic book.

Another rumor -- that Hulk's trademark Daisy Dukes will be replaced by a pair of wrinkle-free Dockers -- has yet to be confirmed.

  • You're looking a little green there, Mr. Norton

In a continuing effort to likely get over being beaten up for his lunch money as a child, Edward Norton has taken the role as Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk.

Norton has a long history of trying to play against type, with roles such as neo-Nazi Derek Vinyard in American History X and the pumped-up, black-eye-happy narrator in Fight Club. Although recently it had appeared he had gone back to his roots, with angry but effete characters in movies like The Painted Veil and The Illusionist.

Norton will be reprising the role that meaty Australian-born/Eastern-European-bred Eric Bana played in Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk. This sequel, in which Bruce Banner is on the run trying to cure his hulk-like condition, will be directed by Louis Leterrier.

You can paint Norton as green as you want, I still say I can take him.

Next Showing: The Incredible Hulk will start filming this summer.
