  • Jeff Bridges Had "No Choice" But to Star in The Men Who Stare at Goats

The premise behind The Men Who Stare at Goats -- that the U.S. military employed "psychic spies" during the Cold War -- may seem pretty bizarre, but it's apparently based on an actual program. In fact, actor Jeff Bridges contacted Lt. Col. Jim Channon, the real-life "psychic warrior" that his character in the movie, Bill Django, is based upon for tips when preparing for the role. Bridges told the L.A. Times:

Jim Channon is alive and well in Hawaii, and he answered all my questions. He's very gung-ho, and he's really dedicated to changing the human direction. A lot of the stuff is far-fetched and easy to laugh at but in my own personal view, it's headed in the right direction. We have to find some way besides killing each other. This stuff is bizarre, but I bet whatever is really going on in the universe is a lot weirder."

In addition to getting tips from Channon, Bridges said that he used his own strange experiences to help him formulate the character of Django.

I found myself remembering my own experiences in the 1970s when I hung out with John Lilly, the man who invented the isolation tank and did experiments with trying to communicate with dolphins. I was a test subject in the isolation tank; it was a box with about 2 feet of water and 1,000 pounds of salt so you would float. John was a guy who would shoot acid -- he'd inject LSD straight into his veins -- and go in there for 24 hours.
    Jeff Bridges

When it comes to choosing acting roles, Bridges said that he really tries "not to do anything at all."

I only take projects that come to the point where I have no choice. Whatever sucks me in, whatever beats my resistance, those are the ones I did.

The Men Who Stare at Goats was written, directed, and produced by Grant Heslov and also stars George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, and Kevin Spacey.

  • More Jedi Tricks from George Clooney in Second Trailer for The Men Who Stare at Goats

The Men Who Stare at GoatsThe Men Who Stare at Goats purports to tell the true story of the U.S. military's flirtation with psychic warfare. And Ewan McGregor, who plays the reporter hot on the trail of this surreal story, insists that's where the weirdest parts of the story come from.

Most of it's true! In fact, the most unbelievable parts of the film are the true ones. The mundane bits are the bits we made up. The journalist in Iraq — my story, the character I play — is an invention. But there was a rumor that the Russian psychics were bombarding the U.S. president with negative energy, and there was a group within the military trying to combat it. It's crazy, but war is crazy.

Still, in the second trailer for the movie, we see that those "mundane bits" aren't lacking in comic potential. Not only does George Clooney continue to celebrate his skills as a self-professed "Jedi warrior," he introduces us to his "sparkly-eyes technique" and provides McGregor with a neat lesson in irony. It's all in a day's work for a member of the First Earth Battalion out to put his psychic powers at the service of his country.

  • The Men Who Stare at Goats: Early Review, a Clooney Stalker, and a Clip
George Clooney Men Who Star At Goats

At its first public screning during the Venice Film Festival, The Men Who Stare at Goats scored a big hit. With George Clooney heading up an all-star cast, the weird tale of the United States military gone psychic is drawing comparisons to Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings, and, of course, Catch 22. A review in Variety is particularly effusive in its praise:

A serendipitous marriage of talent in which all hearts seem to beat as one, The Men Who Stare at Goats takes Jon Ronson's book about "the apparent madness at the heart of U.S. military intelligence" and fashions a superbly written loony-tunes satire, played by a tony cast at the top of its game ... this is upscale liberal movie-making with a populist touch, in Coen brothers style.

During the festival press conference, Clooney himself was the big draw for fans — and also for a stalker, whose public attempt to proposition the star fell a bit flat. The man, apparently convinced that Clooney is a closeted homosexual whom only he can bring out, stripped down to his boxers, on which he had written "George, pick me."

For those who'd like to see a bit more of the movie, there's a new clip available in which Special Forces agent Lyn Cassady (Clooney) shows a reporter tagging along with him (Ewan McGregor) some of the many painful uses of an innocuous-looking multi-tool he calls the predator.

  • George Clooney Goes Psychic for The Men Who Stare at Goats

A new trailer is out for one of the most oddly titled movies of the year. But The Men Who Stare at Goats turns out to be quite a fitting header for this darkly comic tale from the shadowlands of psychic warfare.

Front and center is U.S. Army First Earth Battalion unit member Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who purports to be a soldier from the military's super-secret psychic warfare division reactivated for a new mission in the War on Terror. Although you might call him a psychic spy, he explains to a reporter (Ewan McGregor) chasing down the rumors of weird goings-on at the Pentagon that the title he prefers is "Jedi warrior." That pretty much sets the tone for the misadventures that follow.

The title refers to the power to kill goats just by looking at them. To his credit, Clooney's character does appear to get one poor goat to keel over, although the walking through walls thing definitely needs more work.

In addition to Clooney and McGregor, the all-star cast features Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. It is set to premiere at the Toronto film festival next month and opens in theaters November 6.

  • George Clooney May Pursue Role as Jack Ryan
    George Clooney

Late yesterday, several sources – including Variety, MTV Movies, Cinema Blend, and Empire – started circulating rumors about one of George Clooney's next possible projects. Apparently, Clooney may be interested in succeeding Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck as CIA Agent Jack Ryan, the main character in author Tom Clancy's so-called "Ryanverse."

All the hubbub seems pointed at one sentence written by Kim Masters in this article for The Daily Beast.

A source says [Clooney] expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series.

The Clancy adaptations began in 1990 with The Hunt for Red October, which starred Baldwin as Ryan. Ford was the next to take on the role in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Affleck was the latest to take over Ryan's role in The Sum of All Fears, but that was released seven years ago.

It is known that Paramount has been interested in rebooting the Ryan franchise, but as of yet the studio has not announced any definitive plans.

  • George Clooney Moves Production Company from Warner Bros. to Sony
    George Clooney

Earlier today, Variety reported that George Clooney will sever his current ties with Warner Bros. Clooney's three-year-old production company, Smokehouse Pictures, will find a new home at Sony Pictures. The move ends a nine-year relationship, which began when Clooney founded Section Eight with Grant Heslov and Steven Soderbergh. Clooney and Heslov then founded Smokehouse in 2006.

While at Warner Bros., Clooney won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Syriana and was nominated for Best Director for Good Night, and Good Luck, which Haslov produced. In a statement to the press, Clooney said:

Warner Bros. has been a great place to work, and I’ve felt like part of a family for almost 20 years. So in moving on, I’m leaving a terrific company and a lot of dear friends. They’re a class act.

    .

Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Amy Pascal seemed enthusiastic about welcoming Clooney.

We couldn't be more excited to be in business with them. The broad range of quality projects they have championed and the compelling and sometimes provocative material they support says everything about their company and their creative aspirations ... While we have been trimming production deals overall for the last few years, we see real value in opening our doors to producers with their critical and commercial track record and their artistic point of view.

  • What Does It Take To Be Influential in Hollywood?

Forbes, which we like to think of as the Seventeen of financial magazines because of its incessant list-making, has another list: Hollywood's Influential Actors. To determine the top 10, Forbes relied on data gathered by E-Poll Market Research, a Los Angeles company that gathers information on 4500 celebrities. Apparently, 40% of those polled believe Denzel Julie RobertsWashington is "influential," and that's good enough for the top of the list. The others, in declining order of influence, include Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, and "Julie" Roberts. Which just goes to show you, Hollywood stars don't have nearly as much influence as they're typically given credit for -- Roberts hasn't even been able to influence the creators of this list to get her first name right.

Meanwhile, where are the outspoken Hollywood stars who genuinely make an effort to influence people -- Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Leo DeCaprio, Kelsey Grammer, Arnold Schwarzenegger? The best way to be influential in Hollywood, it seems, is to make mainstream movies that do well at the box office for a couple decades or so, project a vague sense of progressive gravitas at award shows without being overtly political, don't be a woman, and most especially of all, don't be a comedian!

  • George the Movie Star Toasts Imminent Tax Hike

George ClooneyHollywood A-listers, all of whom are amongst the lucky 5% who will feel the brunt of Barack Obama's socialist wrath that Joe the Plumber is so worried about, toasted the new president's victory. George Clooney issued a congratulatory press release, P. Diddy thinks his vote made all the difference, and Courteney Cox and David Arquette spread the wealth around at their place, partying with their friends Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer but sharing some champagne with the paparazzi outside too.

Speaking of Courteney Cox, we haven't seen her for a while, but she's starring in the Adam Sandler comedy Bedtime Stories, opening December 25.

  • Clooney Can't Teach Obama a Thing

George Clooney Denying news reports that he's been advising Barack Obama on the Middle East and other policy issues, George Clooney has issued a statement through his publicist that reads in part: "Although I support Senator Obama, I would never be dumb enough to offer policy advice to either candidate. They seem to be doing fine without me." Clooney is also offering a million dollar reward to anyone who can prove that he has "ever texted or emailed" Obama -- which of course could just mean Obama's in his Fave Five. Either way, we think Clooney is selling himself short. Certainly he's smart enough to advise Candidate Hilton on all matters of state, and probably hair-grooming products as well.
