  • Richard Linklater's Latest Project on Hold, Also Says School of Rock 2 Not Likely

With Disney taking the axe to Miramax's output and staff, we guess it's no surprise that one of the latter studio's planned projects — Richard Linklater's Liars (A-E) — is now in limbo.

The next planned effort from the director of A Scanner Darkly, Fast Food Nation, Before Sunrise, and Dazed and Confused was supposed to be one of the projects protected from Disney's cuts. But Movieline recently caught up with Linklater, who indicated unequivocally that the project is on hold indefinitely.

It's no longer happening, unfortunately. It didn't really work out. It's tough.

Tough indeed, because Linklater had already cast Rebecca Hall and Kat Dennings in the romantic comedy, which involves a road trip in which the two lead characters visit Hall's exes and attempt to retrieve personal effects.

The sudden dissolution of the project also means that Linklater has nothing on the horizon, which will come as a disappointment to his fans. Many were anticipating a possible sequel to School of Rock, but in the same conversation with Movieline, Linklater said that he has spoken with Jack Black and that there are no plans to go forward with that idea.

I don’t think I have anything coming up! Everybody asks me about School of Rock 2, and that’s not really happening. It’s not on the front burner. Mike White was writing on it a long time ago, but it’s become dormant ... I saw Jack the other night, and we talk about it. We’re not gonna do it just to do it. Let’s just say it’s still kind of on the backburner and it’s no one’s next project.

It's a shame Linklater won't have any projects forthcoming, although we don't imagine it will take him long to come up with something else. For now, we're anticipating Me and Orson Welles, which arrives in limited release next Friday.

  • Jack Black Likens Year One to Monty Python's Life of Brian

This morning, Jack Black and Michael Cera were on the CBS Early Show to promote Year One, which will be in theaters Friday.

When asked about the plot, Black made good on his well-known arsenal of musical trivia and referenced a few notes from a Genesis song (get it? Genesis ... movie about prehistoric times?). He then likened the Harold Ramis-directed comedy to another well-known comedy from 30 years ago:

So we're cavemen ... prehistoric dudes, and we're just sort of wandering through Biblical times. A lot like, you know, one of the old Biblical comedies like Life of Brian, in that flavor.

It would probably be foolish to expect Year One to deliver the same level of hilarity as the 1979 movie. That's a tough act to follow. On the other hand, we have to admit that the costumes and set design look very similar.

Compare the two trailers to see what we mean:

  • James Cameron Joins Heavy Metal Sequel

Heavy MetalLast time we heard about the upcoming Heavy Metal sequel, directors Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski, and David Fincher were added to the list of directors collaborating on the animated anthology, and now it looks like James Cameron will also direct a segment as well.

FilmSchoolRejects spoke with Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and editor-in-chief and owner of Heavy Metal Magazine, who offered this update:

I've got breaking news that Fincher and James Cameron are going to be Co-Executive Producers on [Heavy Metal]. Fincher will direct one. Cameron will direct one. Zack Snyder is going to direct one and Gore Verbinski is going to. Mark Osborne and Jack Black from Tenacious D are going to do a comedy segment for the film. Three other directors have agreed but we haven't signed them, but they're equally as jaw-dropping. So we're on cloud nine to be working with such an amazing amount of talent.

It is a pretty impressive list. And while "Co-Executive Producer" is not the most involved of movie jobs, Cameron and Fincher are clearly giving Heavy Metal all the support they can.

  • Die Hard Comic Book Prequel Coming This August

The prequel-slash-origin-story silliness continues. MTV reports that this August, Boom! Studios will release a comic book prequel to the 1988 action classic Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis.

What's it called? Die Hard: Year One, of course. Not to be confused with Batman: Year One, or Year One starring Jack Black and Michael Cera. (They're not very creative with titles either, are they?)

The only plot detail available is that the story follows a younger John McClane who must deal with a crisis during the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. We're wondering if they couldn't just drop footage of McClane into Robert Altman's Nashville and get the movie adaptation over with.

  • New International Year One Trailer

A new international trailer for Year One has appeared. The comedy, about two hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) who set out on a journey through the ancient world, was directed by Harold Ramis from a script by the writers behind the upcoming Ghostbusters 3. The movie looks hilarious, and hopefully won't be affected by a recent trim to make a PG-13 rating.

  • The Susan Boyle Movie: A Star Is Born

Susan BoyleAfter her surprisingly accomplished performance on America's Got Talent: British Edition -- or whatever they call it over there -- Susan Boyle, a frowsy, unemployed, diamond-in-the-rough, went from "total obscurity" to "global superstar" overnight as the clip of her appearance became a YouTube sensation. Now, Simon Cowell and other music industry starmakers are plotting number one albums, international tours, and we're guessing, given Boyle's Rocky Balboa-like triumph combined with her Forrest Gump-like chutzpah, a big-budget biopic about her unlikely rise to fame. But who will play the bushy-browed, frazzle-haired 47-year-old when the project is inevitably greenlit? Vote on your favorite choice below:

    Charlize Theron

  • Year One Trimmed for PG-13 Rating

The Year OneJack Black's latest comedy, The Year One, was just too raunchy for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) as originally cut. After receiving a hard "R" rating, producer Judd Apatow (Pineapple Express) and director Harold Ramis (Analyze That) appeared before the MPAA appeals board to request that the film be granted a more lenient "PG-13" rating.

Apparently, the MPAA was not moved by their pitch, because it refused to change the initial ruling. After the filmmakers made several cuts to the film, the MPAA has now revised the rating for the film, which will be released with a "PG-13" rating.

  • Super Bowl Trailer Half-Time Catch Up - Monsters vs. Aliens, Up and The Year One

Super Bowl 43 With seconds left till the half, Pittsburg has intercepted the ball and run it back for a 100 yard return touchdown--the longest in history! With the extra point, it is now 17-7 for the Steelers.

Now that we're going into the half, I'm getting to play a little trailer catch-up for a couple previews that I haven't blogged about yet.

First off, I just saw a trailer and 3-D promo for Monsters vs. Aliens -- the next computer animated offering from Dreamworks. This has the looks of a fun family favorite. When hostile aliens invade, only Earth's monsters can save us from annihilation. If it looks a little blurry, it's because you need 3-D glasses.

For those of you with the 3-D glasses, here also is the SoBe promo featuring the Monsters.

May I say, that as always, the commercials and trailers are way better than the half-time show. I'm re-living the 80's watching Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, and praying that there isn't going to be another wardrobe malfunction this time.

Another animation that I didn't get to blog about earlier is the Pixar picture Up. While Pixar movies are never bad, this one, about an old man (named Carl Fredrickson) who ties a bunch of balloons to his house and floats away, just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'm getting jaded in my old age, but does this storyline sound interesting to anybody? The trailer was cute, as they all are, but when I want to see funny old people, I visit the local rest home. But hey, I didn't think Wall-E sounded particularly interesting, and yet it has turned out to be one of my favorite Pixar flicks. So what do I know, huh?

Finally, one I missed mentioning right at the beginning was The Year One, a comedy from Harold Ramis starring Jack Black and uber-nerd Michael Cera. You can't go wrong with this one. The trailer had a funny stoning scene that I couldn't find for you, but the below clip makes up for not finding the actual trailer

  • Preview pix from Kung Fu Panda!

In just over a month, the first big animated movie of the summer comes out. In Kung Fu PandaJack Black stars as Po, a slacker Panda who must learn Kung Fu to save his way of life. Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan,Lucy Liu, and Seth Rogen all lend their voices to the cast, as well.

We can sometimes be scrooges about animated features, but even have to admit that the art on this one looks ridiculously cute. Plus, voicing a lazy martial artist panda seems like the perfect gig for Jack Black.

We've got a few early pix for eager fans. To see what's in store, check out our Kung Fu Panda photo gallery.

  • Movie news: Damon, Gervais, and Black

Looks like the golden boy from Boston has another project in the works. Matt Damon, whose third installment of the Bourne series, The Bourne Ultimatum, opens on Friday is finally getting his passion project with director Steven Soderbergh off the ground.

According to MTV.com, the two men have been trying to get their movie, The Informant, under way for years and filming is finally scheduled to start next spring. In it, Damon will play Mark Whitacre, the real-life whistleblower from Archer Daniels Midland who was defrauding the company while also ratting them out to the FBI. Not exactly what one would call a company man.

British funnyman Ricky Gervais (Night at the Museum, Extras) has signed to star in Early Retirement, a comedy about a workaholic who retires to spend more time with his family, says Variety. No directors are attached yet.

Jack Black has another high-concept comedy in the works, says Variety. Universal plans on making The Lost Adventures of Stone Perlmutter Jr., a mockumentary about an Indiana-Jones like adventurer who has a disasterous journey in seach of such artifacts as Yetis and the lost tomb of Jesus. Black will, of course, star.
