  • X-Men: The Last Stand: What Could Have Been

X-Men: The Last StandBrett Ratner is tired of defending his directorial work in X-Men: The Last Stand, but fans continue to wonder what might have been if Bryan Singer had finished his X-Men trilogy, instead of defecting to Superman Returns. Michael Dougherty, the screenwriter for X2: X-Men United who joined Singer's defection, explained his ideas for X3 to Slashfilm in a recent podcast (transcribed by TheGeekFiles).

You found out was that Phoenix [(Famke Janssen)] was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god, which they did in X3. She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was sick of the fighting and she was going to take things into her own hands and she did not give a s**t what the X-Men or the Brotherhood had to say about it.

And ultimately the way it was going to end, at least the version I was pushing for ... she kind of becomes that cosmic force that Phoenix is known to be, she leaves Earth and becomes a god, or at least a higher level of intelligence, and she goes into the cosmos possibly to kick-start life somewhere else. The final scene for me would have been her telling Cyclops [(James Marsden)] or her telling the X-Men "I'll be watching."

Dougherty also planned a different outcome for Rogue (Anna Paquin).

The whole point of Rogue's character is that she is supposed to come to terms with who she is and also I don't think it's good to tell girls "Yeah you should change yourselves so you can get a guy."

Instead The Last Stand saw Rogue lose her powers, Cyclops die, and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) kill Phoenix, all to the disappointment of the fans.

You can check out the entire podcast here.

Originally a short story from acclaimed horror writer Richard Matheson, The Box will debut in theaters November 6. To promote its release, Warner Brothers have released five new clips of the movie, but should you like to remain unspoiler-ed, we suggest you don't watch them. Only push the "play" button if you dare...

Diaz discusses the offer with her husband (James Marsden).

Here, Diaz learns about consequence from Langella.

  • A Mix of Retro and Sci-Fi Glimpses of Richard Kelly's The Box

The BoxThe studio has released a new batch of pictures from Richard Kelly's The Box. A re-imagining of a classic Twilight Zone episode, the movie revolves around a couple (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden) who are given a mysterious box with a button that simultaneously gives them a million dollars but takes a random stranger's life.

In homage to the story's roots, Kelly has set the movie in a meticulously recreated 1970's suburbia, with special attention paid to some of the less-well-considered fashion choices of the decade. Witness the particularly scary wallpaper and plaid pants on display.

That box technology comes from somewhere else, though. So we also get a glimpse of weird, watery, otherworldly scenes that don't seem retro at all. All that plus a good look at the disturbing scar on the face of the mysterious stranger (Frank Langella) who brings the box in the first place.

  • First Trailer for Richard Kelly's The Box

The BoxThe Box, adapted from a short story and Twilight Zone episode, is a science fiction period piece with a moral dilemma at its center. A financially strapped couple (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden) receives a mysterious box from a stranger. In it is a button. Push it and all their financial problems are solved, but someone they don't know dies.

A timely enough dilemma given the global financial crisis, but Richard Kelly has set his adaptation in the 70s in homage to the story's roots and modeled the couple on his own parents. So in a sense, the movie allows him to return to his childhood.

In the trailer we get an introduction to his vision of 1976 suburbia (scary wallpaper, regional accents) and some hints of how he has expanded the original story line. There appears to be some sort of corporate conspiracy centered around the strange disfigured man (Frank Langella) who sent them the box, and we get a brief glimpse of a few weird images that are definitely not 1976.

  • Richard Kelly Gets Personal in Making The Box

The BoxThe Box started out as a six-page short story published in 1970 and was later adapted for a episode of the New Twilight Zone. But in re-working this sci-fi morality tale for the big screen, director Richard Kelly suggests that he is aiming more for a throwback than an update.

The basic story is quite simple. A disfigured stranger gives a suburban couple a mysterious box. Inside the box is a button. If they push it, they get a million dollars, but there's a catch: some person they don't know will die.

In a wide-ranging interview over at AICN, Kelly explains how he fleshed out the plot a bit, adding a nefarious corporation and some sort of connection to NASA's Viking program to the background. Mainly though, he talks about how he tried to give it more depth by recreating the look and feel of the 1970s – all the way down to the wallpaper. And then, to make it personal, he added his parents.

He used them and even their accents as a model for the couple in the movie played by James Marsden and Cameron Diaz. Things got a little weird though when he brought them on set to watch the filming:

It's very meta. You have my parents feeling like they're in a Twilight Zone episode watching James Marsden and Cameron Diaz portray very personal, autobiographical things about their life with their son directing it in this amazing Richard Matheson story that we've all grown up with.

More details are sure to be coming soon, with the first trailer for The Box debuting in the next week or so and move footage scheduled to be shown at Comic-Con in late July.

  • Gary Oldman on the Set of Iron Man 2

Gary OldmanInsider sources on the Iron Man 2 set recently reported a visit by Garry Shandling, the hilarious actor and comedian of It's Garry Shandling's Show and the satirical late night talk show spoof, The Larry Sanders Show. It has been rumored that Shandling will appear as Senator Stern, the character in the X-Men mythos who uses his political power to champion the Mutant Registration Act.

Now, according to IESB, Gary Oldman, the chameleonic actor who became famous playing gruesome villains in True Romance, The Professional and The Fifth Element, and who recently portrayed Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight, has been spotted on the set. There was no speculation about what character (if any) Oldman will portray or how long he will be on set, especially considering the fact that he is currently filming The Book of Eli.

This wouldn't be the first time that an actor appearing in a major motion picture based upon a character from one of the "big two" comic book companies made the leap to a film based on a character from the competition. James Marsden portrayed Marvel Comics' Cyclops in all three X-Men films and then appeared in DC Comics' Superman Returns as Lois Lane's love interest.

  • Third Wolverine TV Spot Airs

X-Men: Origins WolverineWith the first two TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, titled "Outcasts" and "Brothers," aired and being re-watched online, the final TV spot hit the airwaves.  "Legends" focuses less on Wolverine's past and more towards his future as an X-Man, showing lots of fellow mutants Gambit, Deadpool, Emma Frost, and quite a few shots of Cyclops.

Portrayed by Tim Pocock instead of James Marsden, Cyclops gets three different shots in the trailer, perhaps showing that the attention Gambit and Deadpool received from fans overshadowed a substantial Cyclops role in the movie.

  • New Photos and Release Date for Wolverine

WolverineFans will get to enjoy X-Men Origins: Wolverine a few days earlier. According to DenofGeek, instead of opening on Friday, May 1, Wolverine will open on Wednesday, April 29. Considering that sequels are riding on Wolverine's success, an earlier opening may be a good thing.

New photos of Wolverine were published in a preview article in French Magazine Climax, including a boxing brawl between Wolverine and Blob, and the inclusion of an intriguing co-star, Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. James Marsden played Cyclops in the X-Men movies, but newcomer Tim Pocock will be playing the role in Wolverine. Having Cyclops in the movie is not news, however, as this is one of the first times Pocock has been included in the press for the movie, we're prompted to wonder if Summers' appearance is more than just a cameo.
