  • Daniel Radcliffe Says No to The Hobbit

The HobbitRumors have been swirling for quite some time that Daniel Radcliffe might be tapped to play the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Not such a big stretch for the Harry Potter star, so it seemed plausible enough. He would make an excellent hobbit, no doubt.

Final casting decisions though, we found out a few weeks ago, are all still up in the air awaiting the completion and approval of the script. And now Radcliffe himself has put an end to the speculation.

I'd have to say, "Thanks but no thanks," not that anyone has asked me. Honestly, I don't think they would want me anyway, it's just too close. Whatever I do next, I don't think there will be any wizards in it!

So if not the boy wizard, then who? Other names being mentioned are James McAvoy and David Tennant. For his part, Radcliffe is rooting for McAvoy.

James McAvoy is fantastic. I think he should play it. I've done the fantasy-film thing. Actually, so has he, with the Chronicles of Narnia, of course. But I've done it for longer. He can take over. I'm done. I don't think anybody involved in that would want me to, either.

  • James McAvoy to Star with Seth Rogen in a Comedy About Cancer
    James McAvoy

Variety reports that James McAvoy has signed on to star opposite Seth Rogen in a yet-to-be-titled comedy based on the book I'm With Cancer by Will Reiser. We'll hazard a guess, though, and say that there's a 50+% chance it'll be named I'm With Cancer — you'll never guess how we came up with it.

McAvoy will play a 25-year-old who discovers he has cancer and must work to overcome it over a period of several years. The story is based on Reiser's own struggle with cancer in his mid-20s, and he has already written a screenplay adaptation of the novel.

This will be McAvoy's first role since Wanted last summer. He also starred with Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland and with Keira Knightley in Atonement.

  • No Bilbo Yet, But the Re-building of Hobbiton Has Begun

The HobbitRumors have been flying that there would be a major casting announcement for The Hobbit at Comic-Con next week: who would be tapped to play Bilbo Baggins. Among the frontrunners are said to be Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, and David Tennant, though there's obviously the chance that as with The Lord of the Rings an unknown will take the lead.

Alas, executive producer Peter Jackson says that they're not quite ready yet:

No, we won't be announcing Bilbo for a little while. We're starting to think about casting, but we're knee-deep in the script right now. And when we do go to actors, they're probably going to ask to see a script, so we're powering ahead with getting the first draft done.

Nonetheless, preparations for filming are well underway. A familiar landscape is springing up in the New Zealand countryside as roads are laid out, fruit trees are planted and hobbit holes are being dug. Hobbiton is coming back, and there are pictures.

  • Sequels Galore for Wanted
If you wished for more Wanted right after seeing it, like many probably did, you’ll end up getting exactly what you wanted. After the huge box-office success it turned out to be, the next two installments of the story are already in the works. Cinema Blend is reporting that Wanted will be made into a trilogy and that James McAvoy and Terence Stamp are both in on the projects. McAvoy’s character will likely end up fighting more corrupt fraternity weavers all over the world and Angelina Jolie may possibly be back for a second go, we'll have to wait and see how they'll work that out. Either way there is a lot more blood soaked, high-octane action on the horizon for fans of Wanted

Take a look at my interview with James McAvoy to get the dish.

And don't forget my review of Wanted if you're trying to decide whether to head to the theater this weekend or not.
