  • Simon Pegg Updates Paul

Simon PeggThere hasn't been much word regarding Simon Pegg's newest film, Paul, about two British slackers who decide to go to Area 51 in search of aliens after a trip to Comic-Con only to discover an actual alien. There's been one still released, which doesn't really show very much, and actor Jason Bateman talked about getting a gift from his Paul co-stars, but that's about it.

Apparently, even Pegg is aware of the lack of news, because he recently offered an update to his fans in the forum of his web-site.

    Hi all

Thought you might like to hear how things are going on the Paul front. It's been a while since we wrapped now and with the absence of Lance B's video blogs, I guess things must seem to have gone very quiet. Rest assured the good (space)ship Paul is progressing apace. Our venerable and brilliant director Greg Mottola [Superbad], is currently ensconced in an edit suite in NYC with Oscar winning editor, Chris Dickens (Slumdog Millionaire ... and Spaced, Shaun and Fuzz), putting together the first pre f/x cut. The next phase of the process will see Greg and Chris continue to hone and cut the movie and will of course entail the complex process of bringing Paul himself to life, combining the efforts of ace f/x wizards, Double Negative and further work with The Green Hornet himself, Mr. Seth Rogen. Rest assured all is going well and we're all very excited. More news of a kind as we encounter it.

    Simon

Paul also stars Sigourney Weaver, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, Jane Lynch and Rogen as the voice of Paul.

  • Jason Bateman's Amazing Paul Wrap Gift

Jason BatemanJason Bateman recently wrapped shooting on Paul, the latest Simon Pegg comedy about two comic book nerds (Pegg and Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz compatriot Nick Frost) who meet an alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) while traveling cross country across the U.S. Bateman told Collider that before he left the Paul set to fly home, Pegg and company gave him the ultimate present.

He and Nick and Joe Lo Truglio and Bill Hader and Kristen [Wiig] and the director, Greg Mottola, gave me the Japanese one-sheet from Teen Wolf 2. Which was pretty fantastic. And they all signed it with really clunky, semi-funny wolf puns like, "it's been a howl working with you" or crap like that. It's very, very funny and beautifully framed and very tasteful — which was sort of hilarious too. But the real joke was me trying to get it home. I don't know how you check something like that. I couldn't carry it on. So it cost me a lot to ship it back, but I'll bill them for that.

Has Bateman hung the poster in a prominent place in his house?

No. You can probably bid on it on eBay right now. I don't know where I'm going to put it. I told them immediately as I saw it, "my wife's never going to let me put that up in the house." So we're going to have to wait till we can afford a house with a room where fun stuff goes. It was pretty cool of them though, they're a nice group.

Paul is scheduled to open sometime in 2010. To see a first-look poster of Paul, head here.

  • Extended Clips from Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat, the latest comedy from Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, focuses on four couples who head to a tropical resort where couples therapy is mandatory. The trailer shows how Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell convince the other couples (Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Favreau and Kristen Davis, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk) to join them at the retreat using a PowerPoint presentation.

The group soon learns that Bell's pitch is far from the truth once they learn truth about the Eden resort from Peter Serafinowicz.

The following clip has an extended look at the couples yoga session teased in the movie's trailer.

  • No Jason Bateman in Hancock 2

Jesse EisenbergHancock director Peter Berg has said that "everybody's going to come back for a sequel," but apparently that message never made its way to Jason Bateman. Bateman told Collider that he has "not been contacted" and doubts he will be a part of the proposed sequel.

I cannot imagine I'd be a part of that. [Will Smith and Charlize Theron are] both immortal, and so they can kind of live in any time period, and they don't age, but I do, so why would they include me? I don't know.

So despite a mention of Bateman's return in a recent Variety article about the Hancock sequel, Bateman reiterated that he is not involved.

I don't know where that writer gets their information from as I haven't been contacted, nor have my representatives.

The return of Smith and Theron still seems probable, and necessary since the sequel will focus on the home planet of the two immortals. Shield writers Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara have been hired to pen the screenplay.

  • Relax, an Arrested Development Movie Is on Its Way
    Jason Bateman

With a little less to report about the big-screen adaptation of TV show Arrested Development, Jason Bateman has grown tired of press speculation that no news about the movie is bad news. On a press tour for the upcoming Extract, Bateman pleaded for patience regarding the movie's development.

I've always felt bad that I never had more information to give people when they asked me about it, but I guess people kind of got frustrated by that and they just started kind of making up their own sort of, "Well, we haven't heard that much" or "news hasn't changed so it must be going away." I don't know. It sort of took a life of its own on and fatigue started to set in I think about the whole story of it.

I mean, there's really no need to write anything about it at all until [series creator Mitch Hurwitz is] done writing it. Once he writes it then, just like any movie, then it becomes something a little bit more real and then you try to figure out scheduling and you try to figure out people's deals. I mean, it's got the same life that any other project would have. It has just as much a chance of happening as it does of not happening really.

The silence over Arrested Development shouldn't have taken anyone by surprise after an interview with director Ron Howard confirmed the movie was going to be made, while revealing that Howard and company were "asked to stop offering any details."

  • Jennifer Aniston to Get Inseminated

Jennifer AnistonYou've got to give it to Jennifer Aniston. Having been left for the beautiful Earth Mother goddess and her flock of babies, a weaker actress might have rethought the direction of her career. She might have eschewed starring in petsploitation films (Marley and Me) or He's Just Not That Into You. And a weaker woman definitely would have avoided signing onto a movie where she gets impregnated by a turkey baster, while Brangelina trots the twins 'round the world. But, God bless her, not Jen. Girlfriend is like, "Screw it."

Aniston has signed on to star opposite Jason Bateman in The Baster, a fertility comedy from the dudes who brought you Blades of Glory. Aniston plays a neurotic woman who wants to have a baby via artificial insemination. Bateman plays her best friend who secretly replaces her donor's semen with his own.

We can't wait for the press tour on this one. We can already imagine the mag covers, the awkward moments talking turkey basters with Letterman, the tabloids seizing on a fresh opportunity to dredge up the Jen vs. Angie stories yet again. Oh the movie magic!

  • Still in Development Hell: The Arrested Development Movie

At the Independent Spirit Award nominations this morning, Jason Bateman told us that an Arrested Development movie will likely start shooting in the summer of 2009. While not every cast-member has signed on for the movie, Bateman also implied that no one has issued an outright "no" yet either. Still, if the producers can't get all the Bluths to reunite -- yes, that means you, Michael Cera -- perhaps they can use a Brady kid instead? They're usually available and eager for more work.

  • BREAKING: Arrested Development movie still not dead.

Jason BatemanYou can't keep a good Bluth down. Our very own Jeff Otto, fresh from his exclusive interview with Arrested Development star Jason Bateman at the press day for Bateman's new flick Juno, called in with the exciting news that the prospect of an AD movie is still very much a possibility. Bateman relayed the encouraging news to after a weekend meeting with series creator Mitch Hurwitz.

The latest statement comes on the heels of our August 24th report, in which Bateman remarked that a big-screen Bluth reunion "is certainly on the table."

Michael Cera, Bateman's fellow Arrested Development castmember and the co-star of Juno, indicated that he'd be game for an AD movie as well.

  • The rise of Jason Bateman

For those of us who remember back when Jason Bateman was all teen heartthrobby on Valerie, his virtual disappearance from all things Hollywood was terribly depressing to say the least.

But in recent years, he's been cropping up again--in Arrested Development, The Ex, Dodgeball, etc. Well, now it seems one of our favorite '80s stars is finally hitting his comeback stride. Not only will Bateman appear in the upcoming buzz-heavy movies, The Kingdom, Juno, and Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, but he also just signed on to costar with Edward Norton and Brad Pitt in their next project.

State of Play stars Norton as a congressman implicated in the death of his girlfriend and Pitt as his former campaign manager. Bateman will play one of the reporters on the story.

Now that is one good-looking bunch of hombres. Can we sign up for the junket now?

  • Bateman: Arrested Development movie "not dead yet."

BatemanEver since Arrested Development's premature demise, fans of the short-lived, critically acclaimed series have held out hope that the beloved comedy might somehow resurface, whether as a series on another network or as a feature film.

"That is certainly on the table and not dead yet; I just don't know when the right time will be," Arrested Development star Jason Bateman revealed today in an exclusive interview with ReelzChannel.com, adding that the surging careers of fellow castmembers Michael Cera and Will Arnett could help the effort. "Maybe by virtue of us doing well, it makes the idea of a re-visit -- whether it be in a movie or whatever -- a little bit more of a viable scenario. Because if none of us had careers after Arrested Development, it would kind of reek of 'Oh, these poor people couldn't let it go,' or 'They need to make a check.'"

Bateman has several high-profile film projects on the horizon, including Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium and Juno. His latest movie, The Kingdom, opens on September 28th.
