  • Sky's the Limit for Star Trek Sequel

Star TrekWith Star Trek on track to become one of the most successful movies of 2009, if not the most successful, talk of a sequel has already begun.

Director J.J. Abrams thinks that the next Trek movie has no limitations and told SciFiWire that the sequel could either be entirely new or a remake of past adventures:

The great thing is we're all open to anything. I think the fun of where we are with Trek is that it can and should just be fully explored. So I think to limit ourselves to only new adventures would be a mistake. But I also think we want to take advantage of this moment and figure out what's the most exciting version for the new audience as well.

    Trek screenwriter Roberto Orci concurs:

As you can imagine every kind of opinion has been expressed in relation to the movie, so there have been both red lights, green lights, yellow lights, the gamut. What they have done is very quickly identified the fork in the road, which is to do a completely original story or to harmonize with canon the way we did in the first movie, where some of the events overlapped with the original universe and were the same even if time travel hadn’t happened and some of the harmonies were reversed, like Spock with Uhura instead of Kirk.

So if the sequel can cover previous material does that mean fans will get to see Khan in the Trek sequel?

50/50? Is that a boring answer?

Most Trekkies would say, "No." Especially if Javier Bardem plays the role.

  • Oliver Stone Talks Wall Street Sequel, First Image from Michael Moore's Real-Life Counterpart

With the economy in a shambles, the timing seems perfect for filmmakers, both fiction and non-fiction, to move forward with projects that tackle both the dramatic elements and the moral implications of Wall Street's activities.

Oliver StoneOliver Stone is currently at work on a sequel to Wall Street, his award-winning 1987 movie about a naive young broker (played by Charlie Sheen) who gets taken under the wing of the monstrous bigwig Gordon "Greed Is Good" Gekko (played by Michael Douglas). Douglas went on to win an Oscar for his performance, and to many audiences, Gekko remains one of the most vile-yet-charismatic villains ever portrayed on screen.

Thankfully, Douglas is on board for the sequel, which is tentatively titled Money Never Sleeps. Also confirmed are Shia LaBeouf and Javier Bardem in unspecified roles. The plot reportedly has Gekko being released from prison into a broken market, caused in part by more than 20 years of avarice on the Wall Street so familiar to him.

In a recent interview with Variety, Stone spoke about Gekko, who he expects will still be "a larger-than-life character" to audiences:

Like Tony Montana [in Brian De Palma's Scarface], even 20 years later, I get more reactions to him than most characters in my films.

Stone also talked about the relationship between Michael Douglas and his character, and also the way Gekko will fit into the sequel:

The consistency between Gordon Gekko and Michael Douglas was in their charisma and passion, except that Gekko's motives were malevolent. But both are survivors — men who find a way to succeed, who have willed themselves to second acts in their lives. Here's a guy who fell from grace but never lost his ambition and voracity for success. He's a quintessentially American story. And seeing how he manages to survive in this new shark tank 22 years later is a fascinating and challenging proposition. So much has changed. Not just Gordon Gekko. The world, too.

Michael MooreWhile we wait for Money Never Sleeps, due out in February, we can turn to Michael Moore for a non-fiction version of sorts. His latest project focuses on the recent collapse of the global market and the greed that accelerated its demise. Originally, Moore talked about doing a sequel to Fahrenheit 9/11, but with Bush out of office and the economy in its worst shape since the early '80s, a change of focus seemed appropriate.

Last night, USA Today posted excerpts from an interview with Moore along with a new image from the movie. Moore says he's not as interested in being informative as he is in showing the absurdities of Wall Street's behavior:

The movie is not going to be an economics lesson; it's going to be more like a vampire movie. Instead of the main characters feasting on the blood of their victims, they feast on the money. And they never seem to get enough of it.

If nothing else, the movie should offer a welcome chance for people to collectively exorcise a lot of pent up anger and frustration.

  • Javier Bardem May Star with Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love

Javier Bardem may star in Eat, Pray, LoveVariety reports that Javier Bardem is in negotiations with Columbia Pictures to star opposite Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love, which is scheduled for release sometime in 2011.

Bardem, you might remember, won the 2007 Best Supporting Actor Oscar when he starred in Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men. He played Anton Chigurh, the psychopath with a killer cattle gun and an even-more-killer haircut. Bardem also appeared in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona and in Biutiful, which was helmed by Babel director Alejandro González Iñárritu and arrives in theaters this December.

Eat, Pray, Love is based on Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling, critically acclaimed memoir of same name. It tells of Gilbert's journey of self-discovery after a painful divorce and her subsequent world travels. The movie, which is in pre-production, will be directed by Nip/Tuck writer-director Ryan Murphy, who also wrote and directed the big-screen adaptation of Augusten Burroughs' memoir Running with Scissors.

In addition to Roberts, who is starring as Gilbert, Columbia has signed Richard Jenkins, who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar this past year for his performance in The Visitor. If cast, Bardem would play Gilbert's love interest during her world-wide excursion.

Brad Pitt is producing the movie along with Dede Garner.

  • Star Trek Writers Talk about Their Approach to a Sequel

Star TrekGiven all the fan buzz and the rave preliminary reviews, a sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek now seems all but certain. Although they don't want to jinx it by appearing overconfident, and wouldn't talk plot details, Star Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and producer Damon Lindelof did tell Coming Soon that they had been in preliminary talks with Abrams about what directions the sequel might venture into. Pressed as to whether they would revisit iconic episodes of the original Star Trek, they acknowledge that they definitely have to look back, but not perhaps in the way fans expect. Lindelof elaborates:

I think that everybody is expecting us to do "Okay, now it's the continuing adventures of the Starship Enterprise, so they can start doing the stories." Our approach to those stories will be from an entirely different angle. Hopefully the old fans will go "Oh, wow. That looks familiar to me." But then suddenly we zig instead of zagging. Or we warp instead of going impulse power. That's what is exciting about doing this.

And if they were to bring back the character of Khan, they concede that Oscar winner Javier Bardem just might have a leg up on the role.
