  • Olivia Wilde Discusses Fix and Tron: Legacy

Olivia WildeActress Olivia Wilde has been padding her resume with a wide variety of projects lately, from the popular TV drama House to the horror film Turistas to the slapstick period comedy Year One. Not only are her projects disparate in genre and tone, but in production size. Wilde's latest film, Fix, in which she co-stars with her real-life husband, actor-director Tao Ruspoli, was shot in only 18 days using a single camera. In contrast, Wilde recently acted alongside Jeff Bridges in Disney's upcoming Tron: Legacy, a movie that required several camera units, not to mention untold hours of computer graphics work.

In a recent interview with Moviefone, Wilde discussed working on a movie as close to home as Fix, which was inspired by an actual day in the lives of her husband and his brother, a heroin addict.

It was the closest I've ever been to material because I knew the day it was based on and knew the person so well, but I feel that we responsibly represented that real day and that real person. It has been really interesting to go around the world and have these audiences respond so much to the idea of addiction within the family and trying to force someone you love to do something that they may not want to do. It's a universal theme, even though it was a very personal story.

TronUnfortunately, while Wilde did discuss performing stunts and wearing "rubber suits" in Tron: Legacy in a prior interview, she did not offer much additional insight into the highly-anticipated sequel.

[Tron: Legacy was] amazing. Very different from Fix! There's such a cone of silence around Tron, but it'll be fun to watch. That was also an amazing honor, to be able to carry on a legacy like Tron. I don't think diehard fans will be disappointed. I think they will be very happy with what we did. There's a real story. It's going to look cool, but that's not all [there is to it].

  • Jeff Bridges Had "No Choice" But to Star in The Men Who Stare at Goats

The premise behind The Men Who Stare at Goats -- that the U.S. military employed "psychic spies" during the Cold War -- may seem pretty bizarre, but it's apparently based on an actual program. In fact, actor Jeff Bridges contacted Lt. Col. Jim Channon, the real-life "psychic warrior" that his character in the movie, Bill Django, is based upon for tips when preparing for the role. Bridges told the L.A. Times:

Jim Channon is alive and well in Hawaii, and he answered all my questions. He's very gung-ho, and he's really dedicated to changing the human direction. A lot of the stuff is far-fetched and easy to laugh at but in my own personal view, it's headed in the right direction. We have to find some way besides killing each other. This stuff is bizarre, but I bet whatever is really going on in the universe is a lot weirder."

In addition to getting tips from Channon, Bridges said that he used his own strange experiences to help him formulate the character of Django.

I found myself remembering my own experiences in the 1970s when I hung out with John Lilly, the man who invented the isolation tank and did experiments with trying to communicate with dolphins. I was a test subject in the isolation tank; it was a box with about 2 feet of water and 1,000 pounds of salt so you would float. John was a guy who would shoot acid -- he'd inject LSD straight into his veins -- and go in there for 24 hours.
    Jeff Bridges

When it comes to choosing acting roles, Bridges said that he really tries "not to do anything at all."

I only take projects that come to the point where I have no choice. Whatever sucks me in, whatever beats my resistance, those are the ones I did.

The Men Who Stare at Goats was written, directed, and produced by Grant Heslov and also stars George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, and Kevin Spacey.

  • Tron: Legacy Attracted Jeff Bridges with "Groundbreaking Technology"
    Tron: Legacy

The original Tron movie was a triumph of the senses when it debuted in 1982, if not exactly a box office smash. It was one of the first features to incorporate the extensive use of CGI technology and was nominated for Academy Awards in Best Costume Design and Best Sound. With Tron: Legacy, Disney is relying on the latest graphics technology to help draw fans back into theaters to watch a sequel 27 years in the making. According to actor Jeff Bridges, the incredible CGI behind Tron: Legacy made his decision to reprise the role of Kevin Flynn an easy one.

That's the reason why I came on board for the sequel – for the same reasons I did the first one. Just to be a part of the groundbreaking technology.

It's really mind-blowing what they do. I went to Comic-Con this year and Disney had three movies there: Tron [Legacy], A Christmas Carol, and Alice In Wonderland. And it was interesting to see that while the techniques we used in Tron [Legacy] are available to other guys ... it's amazing to see how different the products are, depending on the artist who is at the helm.

Tron: Legacy is directed by Joseph Kosinski and also stars Bruce Boxleitner, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde, and John Hurt.

  • The World of Tron Evolves

TronWhen last we left the world of Tron, way back in 1982, Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) had returned to the real world following the destruction of the MCP (Master Control Program) at the hands of Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), effectively freeing the denizens of the Tron world. End of story, right? Wrong.

According to producer Sean Bailey, the Tron world has seen a lot of changes, even though the outside world and the inner, computer world are unaware of each other.

...what we did is took what happened in the '82 movie and we built a kind of mythology in our world and in their world. And, the servers in the Tron universe ... for reasons which will be explained in the movie, existed on their own; they are unaware of the outside world and the outside world is unaware of them. But, they weren't static. They kept evolving on their own ... so when we enter the world in 2010, that's where we find the world. It's evolved on its own, without direct user influence for a long, long time."

So, what has Flynn been doing all of this time?

Flynn, Kevin Flynn takes his experiences from the '82 movie and starts to try to build upon them, understand things now that he knows he can go in and out of the system. So, his early research was trying to figure out, "What more can I do?" and, "What more can I build now that I know I can actually go in and out of these worlds?"

Bailey was tight-lipped about the titular character, however.

You definitely learn what became of Tron and, so Tron is definitely involved in the narrative. But, uh, I don't want to [talk much more] about Tron or what's happened to him.

  • The Dude, aka Jeff Bridges, May Star in Coen Brothers' True Grit

Jeff Bridges in The Big LebowskiNot only are Joel Coen and Ethan Coen remaking the 1969 Western True Grit, but The Dude may be cast in the role originally played by The Duke.

Variety reports that Jeff Bridges, who played El Duderino in the Coens' The Big Lebowski, is in talks to star as U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn, the role that won John Wayne an Oscar in the original. In the story, Cogburn aids a young girl in search of the man who killed her father. While the original movie was more focused on Cogburn's point of view, the Coens' take will apparently focus more on the girl, which is more in keeping with the novel of same name by Charles Portis.

The thought of remaking a Wayne movie with another actor in his role may seem like blasphemy, but hopefully we can trust the Coens to come up with a reimagining, not a rehash. And we imagine Bridges would make the role his own and not simply imitate all the trademark Wayne mannerisms.

No other details about the cast have leaked yet as the movie's still a long way from release. As of now, it's currently expected for 2011.

  • George Clooney Goes Psychic for The Men Who Stare at Goats

A new trailer is out for one of the most oddly titled movies of the year. But The Men Who Stare at Goats turns out to be quite a fitting header for this darkly comic tale from the shadowlands of psychic warfare.

Front and center is U.S. Army First Earth Battalion unit member Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who purports to be a soldier from the military's super-secret psychic warfare division reactivated for a new mission in the War on Terror. Although you might call him a psychic spy, he explains to a reporter (Ewan McGregor) chasing down the rumors of weird goings-on at the Pentagon that the title he prefers is "Jedi warrior." That pretty much sets the tone for the misadventures that follow.

The title refers to the power to kill goats just by looking at them. To his credit, Clooney's character does appear to get one poor goat to keel over, although the walking through walls thing definitely needs more work.

In addition to Clooney and McGregor, the all-star cast features Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. It is set to premiere at the Toronto film festival next month and opens in theaters November 6.

  • Are there Too Many Villains in Iron Man 2?

Iron Man 2It's a common problem for comic book-movie sequels: too many villains. In Iron Man, director Jon Favreau kept things simple by having Robert Downey Jr. square off with only one major villain, Jeff Bridges. For Iron Man 2, Downey Jr. will face off against Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and possibly fighting with best friend Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) as War Machine, whose appearance was confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Cheadle told MTV that his time in the War Machine armor was "significant" and that there will be tension between himself and Downey Jr.:

We kept asking ourselves: How does that play out with Tony Stark being an independent contractor doing what he wants to do, and Rhodes actually being in the military. There's a real chain of command he has to follow. What's the conflict that creates?

Will featuring so many potential adversaries in Iron Man 2 weigh down the movie? Favreau seems aware of the potential villain overload and doesn't see it as a problem:

We had to walk a fine line. I think you're good for number two. Two seems to be the charm because you got your origin story out of the way. You can add some complexity to it and you have room, because you don't have to tell the origin story, to introduce the characters. When you get to number three, you can get hidebound. You're like a beached whale sometimes because you have so much, you collapse under the weight of the complexity that you've created.

Favreau has suggested that a potential Iron Man 3 will likely focus on arch-nemesis Mandarin. Thus far, no other villains have been named. That ought to keep the "complexity" down.

  • New Tron: Legacy Footage

In conjunction with San Diego Comic-Con, Walt Disney Pictures has just released new footage from the long-awaited sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic Tron. The footage is labeled as "Visual Effects Concept Test" footage, so expect changes and improvements on the final footage.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy sees the return of Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner to the roles of Kevin Flynn and Tron, respectively, and also stars Olivia Wilde, James Frain, Beau Garrett, and Michael Sheen.

  • Disney Officially Discloses Tron Sequel Plot

TronDisney finally released the official synopsis for the Tron sequel and it's... exactly what it was speculated to be months ago. Here's the studio's summary, in all its official-ness:

Tron (title not final) (In Disney Digital 3D™)

Tron is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that's unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

To summarize, the original Tron is about a computer programmer getting sucked into a video game to fight the Master Control Program and the sequel will be about that computer programmer's son getting sucked into the same video game to fight the Master Control Program. Hmm. Feels like a theme is emerging.

With the synopsis out of the way, hopefully Disney will officially name the sequel, which has gone through multiple preliminary titles so far, from Tr2n to Tron 2.0 to the highly original Tron. Perhaps Disney will reveal it later this month at their San Diego Comic-Con Tron presentation.

Buzz on the sequel has been very good so far. An early script review called the movie "filled with problems and potential." Hopefully director Joseph Kosinski can fix those problems and maximum the potential by its 2011 release.

  • Tron Sequel to Get Frost-ed
    Michael Sheen

Michael Sheen, the actor who portrayed the first half of Frost/Nixon, may be playing the villain in the upcoming Tron sequel. SlashFilm reports that Sheen subtly revealed his casting via his Twitter account where he mentioned that he would be acting in a "mystery film" where he would play a character that is "in fact not a person at all." Then Sheen asked his 7,000+ followers to vote on their favorite Jeff Bridges movie and remarked that he was "personally very happy to see so many Tron fans."

Next, Sheen said he was off to Vancouver, coincidentally the shooting site of the Tron sequel (production photos have been popping up since last month). When someone pointed this out to Sheen, he responded that "without giving too much away, I already knew."

Did we say "subtle" earlier? We take it back.

The Tron sequel arrives in theaters in 2011, and will also be available in digital 3D.

Michael Sheen will also star as one of the vampires in this little movie called New Moon, opening in November.

  • Tron Sequel Adds Supermodel and Title

TronThe Tron sequel has gone by many names: Tr2n, Tron 2.0, but at ShoWest, Slashfilm reports that Disney presented a new logo with the brand new name of Tron. Yes, it's simple, classic, perhaps a touch similar to the original, but sometimes, you've got to go with what works, right Disney? (Psst, Disney, it's not that hard, just pick a new title and stick with it! Watch: Tron 2: Tron Harder. Done!)

In more Tron news, and by that I mean the sequel and not the original, supermodel Serinda Swan has been added to its cast. Swan will be familiar to Smallville fans, having just played sorceress Zatanna in a recent episode. Swan, along with Beau Garrett and two other actresses, will play "temptresses from inside the computer world. We're sort of the main guy's go-to girls."

Which "main guy" is unclear. Jeff Bridges? Bruce Boxleitner? Garrett Hedlund as Bridges' son? Pretty vague, Swan.

  • Tron Sequel Plot Leaked

TronAintitCoolNews reported the plot details to the Tron sequel, which was titled Tr2n at one point and could be Tron 2.0 or some version of that in the future. According to the AICN source, reporting from Vancouver where the movie is being shot, the plot breaks down like this:

The movie starts in 1989. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has created some of the world's top-selling games based on his Game Grid challenges in the first film. Flynn disappears, leaving behind his seven-year-old son Sean, and Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) takes over Flynn's company (ENCOM).

Then the movie jumps ahead to the present:

Sean is now twenty-something. Alan Bradley has info that leads Sean to look for his father in his old arcade -- mothballed. Into the computer world goes Sean. There's a CLU character (Flynn's computer alter-ego from the first film). Flynn has programmed CLU to run around and make a better computer world, but CLU's gone corrupt and is creating his own interpretation. CLU has it out for a kind of program (ISOs) and wants to eradicate them, while the ISOs believe Sean Flynn is the one who will free them from CLU's belligerence. Somewhere in the computer world, Bridges is whizzing around in a classic Light Cycle. Will he help in the battle against CLU?

The source claims the sequel will feature Light Cycles and will be adding Light Jets, which also trail light walls, plus the sequel will feature a huge disc battle.

  • Jeff Bridges to Get Digitally Rejuvenated for Tron 2.0

Jeff BridgesIt's not just the computer technology that will be getting a reboot for the long-awaited sequel to Tron. A tipster tells io9 that Jeff Bridges has been sent up to Canada to be digitized. It's all about getting the 59-year-old actor spruced up, more light-cycle friendly and most importantly de-aged to reprise his role from the 1982 original. The process begins by creating a plaster cast of his body, reworking it to make him look younger, and slapping in on a body double in post-production. If the teaser from Comic-Con is on target, the younger version will supplement rather than replace Bridges' normally-aged character and the two may appear in some scenes together.

  • Tron Sequel Casting News

TronFor those of you asking: "They're making a sequel to Tron?" The answer is "yes." The clunky title of Tr2n was revealed at a Comic-Con in August 2008, when a teaser trailer debuted. Olivia Wilde (TV's House) and Beau Garrett (Turistas) have been added to a cast that includes Jeff Bridges returning to fight the Master Control program (What, Bruce Boxleitner is busy?). In fact, Bridges is not just returning, he's excited. He told the Guardian: "Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting."

Tr2n will be shot in 3-D and is set to open sometime in 2011. It will be directed by newcomer Joseph Kosinski and written by Lost producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.

  • Finally, an unnecessary sequel I can get behind: Tron II

Tron!!!Just when I thought the folks in Hollywood couldn't be any more bereft of creativity, flooding the Cineplex with an endless array of uninspired sequels, remakes and so-called "updates," they go and do something like this...and totally redeem themselves!

Ladies and gentlemen, Tron II has gotten the go-ahead.

17 years before Keanu Reeves and pals were prancing around in black leather fetish apparel in The Matrix movies, it was Disney's Tron that first explored the idea of humans doing battle in cyberspace, without the help of overlong Kung-Fu fights or creepy rave sequences. The groundbreaking 1982 film, which starred Jeff Bridges and Cindy Morgan (known best as Caddyshack's Lacey Underall), was also the first to utilize true CGI (albeit with Commodore 64-quality results). On top of that, it was freakin' awesome, man!

25 years later, a follow-up is finally in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Joseph Kosinski has signed on to helm "the next chapter" of Tron, with writing duties assigned to Lost veterans Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Thanks Disney; this totally makes up for Underdog.
