  • Jerry Bruckheimer Has Received Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Script

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack SparrowCollider caught up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer who confirmed that a script for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has been delivered, keeping the proposed production start date of spring 2010 on track.

On Stranger Tides will be based on a Tim Powers novel of the same name, which follows a sailor who falls in with Blackbeard's quest to find the Fountain of Youth. Powers told The LA Times that Disney optioned his book almost three years ago, but he was sworn to secrecy. Powers thinks that his characters won't be used in the script but the Fountain storyline will be.

I've watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth. My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie.

Pirates screenwriter Terry Rossio confirmed to Empire that the Fountain of Youth storyline would be used, along with Blackbeard. However, that may be all that exists from Powers' book.

We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth ... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book. It's a brilliant and Tim Powers is an amazing writer — and it's a great title. It allows us to draw material from that universe and his expertise.

I don't know if its proper to say it's based on it but there are enough common elements to think that the book had to be optioned to us to reasonably proceed along that story line.

  • Johnny Depp to Play Tonto in Lone Ranger Movie

Johnny DeppAs long ago as March 2008, there was news that Jerry Bruckheimer was producing a live-action Lone Ranger movie and that Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio were working on the screenplay. Not much else was heard of the project until rumors started circulating in May of this year that Jack Sparrow, himself, Johnny Depp, would be starring in the film as Tonto, the Ranger's Native American partner.

In September, during a huge Walt Disney Pictures media blitz, Depp was officially announced to play Tonto. Recently, in a group interview in Santa Monica, Bruckheimer said that the project is still moving forward.

Elliot and Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny. So they're creating something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western.

According to some reports, the "additional elements" that Bruckheimer refers to may be the inclusion of some supernatural elements to the story, much in the same way Pirates incorporated historical and fantastical elements.

As for who will play the title role of the Lone Ranger, Bruckheimer said that it's still up in the air.

We're still creating a pretty wide net and figuring it out. It comes down to who is available when we want to make it. We have a wish list.

  • Jerry Bruckheimer Plotting Civil War -- Disney-Style

Shattered UnionVariety reports that Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of TV shows and movies including CSI: Miami and Confessions of a Shopaholic, is working on an adaptation of the popular video game Shattered Union for Disney. In this strategy war game, the United States is battling seceded states after a nuclear blast wipes out Washington, DC.

Bruckheimer has brought in Ninja Assassin and World War Z scribe J. Michael Straczynski to pen the screenplay. Both are no stranger to video game adaptations. Bruckheimer produced Disney's upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which opens May 28, 2010, and Straczynski is also writing a Silver Surfer movie for Fox — good news for fans that thought the movie was dead.

Since the movie is being made for Disney, should we assume Bruckheimer will make the nuclear explosion that destroys the Capitol and ignites civil war family-friendly?

  • New Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Images

Having failed to make a big push for its latest (potential) franchise at San Diego Comic-Con, Walt Disney is trying to create some buzz for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time by releasing new stills from the movie.

Two of the stills feature ripped-up Jake Gyllenhaal and smoking-hot Gemma Arterton in action as Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina, respectively, while the other shot shows producer Jerry Bruckheimer behind the scenes on the set.

Based on Ubisoft's popular line of video games, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is set in sixth century Persia and tells the story of how Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina must work together to stop the evil Nizam (played by Sir Ben Kingsley) from using the mysterious "Sands of Time" to destroy the world.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is being directed by Mike Newell and also stars Toby Kebbell, Alfred Molina, Reece Ritchie, Richard Coyle and Steve Toussaint.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Starts Shooting in April 2010

    Comic-Con 2009: San Diego

Last week, Jerry Bruckheimer made an appearance on The CBS Early Show and announced a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, with Johnny Depp once again starring as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Pirate Johnny DeppNow, Comingsoon.net is reporting that the movie will begin production next spring. The online publication interviewed Oren Aviv, Disney's Head of Production, at Comic-Con yesterday, and Aviv broke the news.

We're going to shoot Pirates 4 in April or May of next year. We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan.

Aviv added that they will be shooting only one movie this time, in contrast to the previous two movies, which were shot together. The aim is for another trilogy that may take things in a new direction.

It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger. The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters.

One thing on everyone's mind is whether Gore Verbinski will return as director. No official word on that yet.

  • Bruckheimer Confirms Fourth Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp to Star

In an appearance on the CBS Early Show Tuesday morning, prolific Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced that there will be a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie and that Johnny Depp will once again star as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Bruckheimer was on the show to promote his upcoming 3-D animated feature G-Force, which involves government-trained guinea pigs. We mean that quite literally, by the way. The movie features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz, Jon Favreau, Steve Buscemi, Sam Rockwell, and Tracy Morgan.

The 63-year-old producer was then asked about his other projects, at which point he mentioned Depp and the new Pirates movie. He also spoke a bit about his work on Disney's upcoming The Sorcerer's Apprentice and the movie adaptation of the video game series Prince of Persia.

  • Moviegoers Made to Shop for Prince of Persia Poster

Prince of PersiaMovie producer Jerry Bruckheimer is playing games with his audiences -- betting that he can get chick flick fans to go on a movie poster treasure hunt.

Bruckheimer's plan is to place images of his coming big-screen projects, easter egg style, within his February 13th romantic comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic. Included in the fun is video game adaptation Prince of Persia starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

MTV reports that this will be the first time that Gyllenhaal will be seen in full-costume as Prince Dastan. The question is, will anybody in the theater care? While the featured flick is a fanboy favorite, how many gamers are also hot for chick flicks?

There is, of course, the possibility they're on a date.
