  • Jeff Bridges Had "No Choice" But to Star in The Men Who Stare at Goats

The premise behind The Men Who Stare at Goats -- that the U.S. military employed "psychic spies" during the Cold War -- may seem pretty bizarre, but it's apparently based on an actual program. In fact, actor Jeff Bridges contacted Lt. Col. Jim Channon, the real-life "psychic warrior" that his character in the movie, Bill Django, is based upon for tips when preparing for the role. Bridges told the L.A. Times:

Jim Channon is alive and well in Hawaii, and he answered all my questions. He's very gung-ho, and he's really dedicated to changing the human direction. A lot of the stuff is far-fetched and easy to laugh at but in my own personal view, it's headed in the right direction. We have to find some way besides killing each other. This stuff is bizarre, but I bet whatever is really going on in the universe is a lot weirder."

In addition to getting tips from Channon, Bridges said that he used his own strange experiences to help him formulate the character of Django.

I found myself remembering my own experiences in the 1970s when I hung out with John Lilly, the man who invented the isolation tank and did experiments with trying to communicate with dolphins. I was a test subject in the isolation tank; it was a box with about 2 feet of water and 1,000 pounds of salt so you would float. John was a guy who would shoot acid -- he'd inject LSD straight into his veins -- and go in there for 24 hours.
    Jeff Bridges

When it comes to choosing acting roles, Bridges said that he really tries "not to do anything at all."

I only take projects that come to the point where I have no choice. Whatever sucks me in, whatever beats my resistance, those are the ones I did.

The Men Who Stare at Goats was written, directed, and produced by Grant Heslov and also stars George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, and Kevin Spacey.

  • Facebook Movie Casts Justin Timberlake, Jesse Eisenberg, and Andrew Garfield

Jesse EisenbergLast week, MTV Movies asked Jesse Eisenberg about the upcoming Facebook movie, pressing him for an answer as to whether he was part of the rumored cast, which also included Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield. Eisenberg simply responded, "They are rumors; that is true."

Well, now we can freely say that all these rumors are true. Variety is reporting that all three are now officially attached to The Social Network, which is being directed by David Fincher (Benjamin Button, Zodiac, Fight Club) and produced by Kevin Spacey.

The script for the movie was penned by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War) and tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004 while a sophomore at Harvard. In the five years since, Facebook has amassed more than 200 million users. Sorkin adapted his script from the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal.

You might remember Eisenberg from his memorable performance in The Squid and the Whale as writer-director Noah Baumbach's alter ego, a maladjusted youth with daddy issues. That role, we're sure, had an influence in the choice to cast him as Zuckerberg, who has been characterized as highly intelligent, ambitious, and socially awkward. Eisenberg also appears opposite Woody Harrelson in Zombieland, which comes out next Friday.

Timberlake has been cast as Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who became Facebook's founding president. Garfield will portray Eduardo Saverin, who helped Zuckerberg launch the networking site, but later abandoned the relationship due to quarrels over financial issues.

The movie is expected sometime in 2010. No other casting decisions have been announced as of yet.

  • Jesse Eisenberg Addresses Rumors About Role in Facebook Movie

Jesse EisenbergDuring an interview for the upcoming Zombieland, MTV Movies asked Jesse Eisenberg about the rumors he will star as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, which begins filming in October and will be released sometime next year.

When asked very pointedly if the rumors were true, Eisenberg evasively answered, "They are rumors; that is true." He then fumbled for a graceful exit from the conversation, but definitely left some room for interpretation.

The Social Network is being helmed by David Fincher, who also directed Benjamin Button, Zodiac, and Fight Club. This prompted Eisenberg's Zombieland co-star Woody Harrelson, who was also present for the interview, to ask Eisenberg how he could possibly say no. Eisenberg simply responded (unconvincingly, in our opinion), "I'm sure you could find a reason to say no."

The script for the movie was penned by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War) and tells the story of how Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004 while a sophomore at Harvard. In the five years since, Facebook has amassed more than 200 million users. Sorkin adapted his script from the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal.

Kevin Spacey is acting as one of the producers and has already expressed great excitement over the project. Other rumored stars include Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield.

  • George Clooney Goes Psychic for The Men Who Stare at Goats

A new trailer is out for one of the most oddly titled movies of the year. But The Men Who Stare at Goats turns out to be quite a fitting header for this darkly comic tale from the shadowlands of psychic warfare.

Front and center is U.S. Army First Earth Battalion unit member Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who purports to be a soldier from the military's super-secret psychic warfare division reactivated for a new mission in the War on Terror. Although you might call him a psychic spy, he explains to a reporter (Ewan McGregor) chasing down the rumors of weird goings-on at the Pentagon that the title he prefers is "Jedi warrior." That pretty much sets the tone for the misadventures that follow.

The title refers to the power to kill goats just by looking at them. To his credit, Clooney's character does appear to get one poor goat to keel over, although the walking through walls thing definitely needs more work.

In addition to Clooney and McGregor, the all-star cast features Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. It is set to premiere at the Toronto film festival next month and opens in theaters November 6.

  • Kevin Spacey Talks About Facebook Movie
    Kevin Spacey

About a month ago, we wrote that Kevin Spacey had signed on to produce The Social Network, an upcoming movie about the creation of Facebook. In a recent interview with MTV, Spacey talked about the project, saying that production may begin relatively soon.

We're at a very early stage. But I think it's on the fast track. I think the film — they want to do it and maybe even do it this year. So it's gonna happen. But I have no clue as to who may be in it, because ultimately that will be [up to] the director.

Although there's been no official announcement regarding a director, current rumors are pointing to David Fincher (Benjamin Button, Zodiac, Fight Club) as the most likely candidate. There are also speculations regarding possible cast members, but Spacey insisted that they are likely false.

I can't imagine anyone's read for it because we haven't really announced the director ... So I don't think anyone's read for it. Maybe in their fantasy they've auditioned for it.

The movie will be based on a script by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War) and tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg, who created the social networking site in 2004 while a sophomore at Harvard. In the five years since, Facebook has amassed more than 200 million users.

The Sorkin script is an adaptation of the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal, which was released in stores last week.

  • Facebook Movie in the Works, David Fincher May Direct
    David Fincher

Yesterday, Variety reported that David Fincher (Benjamin Button, Zodiac, Fight Club) is in talks with Columbia to direct The Social Network, an upcoming movie about the creation of Facebook. The movie would be based on a script by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War) and tell the story of Mark Zuckerberg, who created the social networking site in 2004 while a sophomore at Harvard. In the five years since, Facebook has amassed more than 200 million users.

SlashFilm reports that the Sorkin script is actually an adaptation of the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal, which is due in stores on July 14. On the Amazon.com page for the book, there's a plug for the movie from none other than Kevin Spacey, one of the project's producers.

You may think you know the story of the Facebook phenomenon, but you haven't heard the whole story and never like this ... [Mezrich] tells a captivating story of betrayal, vast amounts of cash, and two friends who revolutionized the way humans connect to one another – only to have an enormous falling out and never speak again ... I'm currently working with Dana Brunetti, Scott Rudin, Mike Deluca, and Aaron Sorkin on the movie adaptation of The Accidental Billionaires. If the book is any indication, the film is going to be a must see.

We can only speculate as to Fincher's interest in a project like this. The only connection we can come up with is the theme of obsession, which has shown up repeatedly in his films, from methodical serial killers (Se7en) to the "good guys" tracking them (Zodiac). And of course, there's the anarchic ramblings of Tyler Durden in Fight Club. We're anxious to see what happens next with this project.

  • Columbia Pictures Acquires Somali Pirate Capture Story, Kevin Spacey to Produce

Kevin SpaceyThe transition from current events to dramatic adaptations seems to move quicker and quicker these days. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed today that Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to the life story of Richard Philips, the U.S. Navy captain whose ship was abducted by Somali pirates barely six weeks ago.

The movie will tell the story about the hijack, most likely with emphasis on Philips's surrendering himself to the pirates in order to save his crew. He was eventually rescued unharmed.

Kevin Spacey will produce, along with Scott Rudin, Michael DeLuca, and Dana Brunetti. No writers or actors are yet attached to the project. Columbia Studio Executive Doug Belgrad spoke to the press:

We were drawn to this remarkable story of heroism and courage as events were unfolding off the coast of Africa.

Columbia also gained the rights to Philips' upcoming memoir. No production schedule or release date has been announced for the movie.

  • New Trailer, Poster for Duncan Jones' Moon

MoonMoon, an indie sci-fi film about disturbing discoveries at a lonely lunar outpost helmed by David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, has been getting largely rave reviews on the film festival circuit. Finally, the trailer has been released. Some clips were available earlier, but the trailer offers new footage and a better sense of where the picture is headed. When things start to go wrong for a lonely space miner (Sam Rockwell), the computer GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey) looks like it might just go all HAL 9000 on him. Its emoticon puts on its twitchy face and suggests, "Perhaps you are imagining things." It's a menacing doubt also neatly incorporated into the movie's trippy new op-art-inspired poster.

Next Showing: Moon will get a limited release in theaters starting June 12, 2009

  • 5 clips from Duncan Jones' Moon

MoonDetails about Duncan Jones' tale of tale of space-isolation, madness, and disturbing revelations begin to emerge in 5 clips of the upcoming movie. Moon, which will be premiering at Sundance on January 23, follows a space miner (Sam Rockwell) at a desolate lunar base as he discovers that the company that put him there may be using him in ways he hadn't considered. The clips feature a Hal-like computer, voiced by Kevin Spacey, sporting a smiley-face emoticon, and hints as to what might be driving the miner toward madness.

Given that the movie is being directed by Duncan Jones (aka Zowie Bowie), his vision of isolation and madness in space could by very interesting indeed. For more of Jones' take on Moon, check out his interview yesterday with Quiet Earth.

  • Spacey still game for Superman sequel

Lex Luthor, eyeing some KryptoniteHopes for a sequel to Superman Returns, Bryan Singer's 2006 reboot of the fabled comic book franchise, received a welcome shot in the arm recently when Singer announced that he's moving forward with a follow-up, ending speculation that he might be finished with the Man of Steel. The project's still in its infancy, but if it does indeed take flight, star Kevin Spacey is down to reprise his role as the follicular-challenged archvillain Lex Luthor:

"I'm scheduled to come back, meaning that I made a deal to do a second film, and I think Kate (Bosworth) did as well," said Spacey today during press conference to promote his new gambling flick 21. "Bryan and I spoke last spring and I knew he was gonna do this film in Germany and then he was talking about doing another film after that. My suspicion is that if they are moving forward, it probably wouldn't start shooting until sometime in the spring of 2009 to be released in 2010."

Spring of 2009 -- that'll give producers more than enought time to find a replacement for Brandon Routh.
