  • Matt Damon to Star in Eastwood's Hereafter and Soderbergh's Liberace Pic

Matt DamonYesterday afternoon, Variety reported that Matt Damon has agreed to star in Hereafter, Clint Eastwood's next production, with a script by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen). Just hours later, Empire reported that Damon had also signed on to star in Steven Soderbergh's upcoming biopic of Liberace.

Although Warner Bros. is keeping the plot of Hereafter under wraps — describing it only as akin to The Sixth SenseMovie Line, which claims to have a version of the script, has described the plot in extensive detail. Based on that description, the movie seems less a supernatural thriller and more a tragic meditation on death. Damon's character is described as a "handsome, shy, soft-spoken" factory worker who can ... yes, indeed ... see dead people. Production on Hereafter is expected to begin this fall.

Meanwhile, Soderbergh confirmed that Damon is onboard for his next project, saying at the Deauville Film Festival that Damon has "accepted the challenge." Damon would most likely play the male lover of Liberace, the flamboyant musician whose stage and TV career spanned from the 1940s to his death in the late 1980s. The movie will apparently focus on a 1982 lawsuit, in which Damon's character revealed Liberace's homosexuality, shocking many around the world.

The untitled project already has Michael Douglas on board in the main role, and Soderbergh talked about his enthusiasm for Douglas' fit for the role.

We've already done some costume and wardrobe tests on Michael, and they're very, very, very good.... I swear to you, Michael amazed me. He crushed it.

Damon has starred in other projects by both directors. He can be seen in Soderbergh's The Informant!, now in theaters, and he is also featured in Eastwood's Invictus, which is due out in December. The latter movie stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Damon as Francois Pienaar, captain of South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup team. It tells the story of Mandela's attempts to use the rugby event to heal his country's reputation after years of apartheid and internal struggle.

  • Michael Douglas Reveals Wall Street 2 Details, New Shia LaBeouf Pics Released

Bruce CampbellEmpire recently spoke with Michael Douglas about Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.

The movie, due next April, is Oliver Stone's follow-up to his 1987 movie about a naive young broker (played by Charlie Sheen) who gets taken under the wing of Douglas' character, the monstrous bigwig Gordon "Greed Is Good" Gekko. Douglas went on to win an Oscar for his performance, and to many audiences, Gekko remains one of the most-vile-yet-charismatic villains ever portrayed on screen.

In the interview, Douglas talked a bit about the plot of the new movie, as well as its current relevance.

It's 22 years later. Gordon has done about eight years in jail and got out in about 2001. The picture predominantly focuses on these last couple of years on Wall Street, which nobody anticipated. We shot the first one in 1986 and it was a wild, wild colourful time. And here we have both a train crash and a larger-than-life period leading up to that train crash. It's an exciting time to make a picture about Wall Street.

Douglas will star opposite Shia LaBeouf, who plays an ambitious young trader, similar to Sheen's character in the first movie. Check out LaBeouf in these stills, courtesy of Reel Loop.

Money Never Sleeps also stars Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and Josh Brolin. Oliver Stone has confirmed that Charlie Sheen will also make an appearance.

  • Susan Sarandon Gets Greedy in Wall Street 2

Susan SarandonThe trades told us this week that Susan Sarandon will be joining the all-star cast of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, directed by Oliver Stone.

The addition of Sarandon further solidifies an impressive cast, which includes Michael Douglas as the newly freed and money-hungry Gordon Gekko, Shia LaBeouf as an ambitious young day trader, and Frost/Nixon's Frank Langella as LaBeouf's Wall Street mentor.

And while LaBeouf takes over a role similar to Charlie Sheen's in the first movie, there's no word yet on whether Sheen will be making a cameo. Last we heard, though, greed is still good.

  • Frank Langella to Star in Wall Street 2, Josh Brolin May Join as Well

Frank LangellaVariety reports that Frank Langella, the veteran actor who most recently starred in Frost/Nixon, has joined the cast of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.

The movie, due next April, is Oliver Stone's follow-up to his 1987 movie about a naive young broker (played by Charlie Sheen) who gets taken under the wing of the monstrous bigwig Gordon "Greed Is Good" Gekko (played by Michael Douglas). Douglas went on to win an Oscar for his performance, and to many audiences, Gekko remains one of the most vile-yet-charismatic villains ever portrayed on screen.

Douglas has already agreed to reprise the role, and Shia LaBeouf is on board as an ambitious young trader, similar to Sheen's character in the first movie. At one time, Javier Bardem was rumored to star, but he has since confirmed that he will not take part.

Langella, meanwhile, will play the role of an older broker who mentors LaBeouf's character. He is also scheduled to star in the thriller The Box, from writer/director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales), and All Good Things from director Andrew Jarecki (Capturing the Friedmans).

In addition, Josh Brolin is rumored as a possible addition to the Wall Street 2 cast, although nothing official has been announced.

  • Oliver Stone Talks Wall Street Sequel, First Image from Michael Moore's Real-Life Counterpart

With the economy in a shambles, the timing seems perfect for filmmakers, both fiction and non-fiction, to move forward with projects that tackle both the dramatic elements and the moral implications of Wall Street's activities.

Oliver StoneOliver Stone is currently at work on a sequel to Wall Street, his award-winning 1987 movie about a naive young broker (played by Charlie Sheen) who gets taken under the wing of the monstrous bigwig Gordon "Greed Is Good" Gekko (played by Michael Douglas). Douglas went on to win an Oscar for his performance, and to many audiences, Gekko remains one of the most vile-yet-charismatic villains ever portrayed on screen.

Thankfully, Douglas is on board for the sequel, which is tentatively titled Money Never Sleeps. Also confirmed are Shia LaBeouf and Javier Bardem in unspecified roles. The plot reportedly has Gekko being released from prison into a broken market, caused in part by more than 20 years of avarice on the Wall Street so familiar to him.

In a recent interview with Variety, Stone spoke about Gekko, who he expects will still be "a larger-than-life character" to audiences:

Like Tony Montana [in Brian De Palma's Scarface], even 20 years later, I get more reactions to him than most characters in my films.

Stone also talked about the relationship between Michael Douglas and his character, and also the way Gekko will fit into the sequel:

The consistency between Gordon Gekko and Michael Douglas was in their charisma and passion, except that Gekko's motives were malevolent. But both are survivors — men who find a way to succeed, who have willed themselves to second acts in their lives. Here's a guy who fell from grace but never lost his ambition and voracity for success. He's a quintessentially American story. And seeing how he manages to survive in this new shark tank 22 years later is a fascinating and challenging proposition. So much has changed. Not just Gordon Gekko. The world, too.

Michael MooreWhile we wait for Money Never Sleeps, due out in February, we can turn to Michael Moore for a non-fiction version of sorts. His latest project focuses on the recent collapse of the global market and the greed that accelerated its demise. Originally, Moore talked about doing a sequel to Fahrenheit 9/11, but with Bush out of office and the economy in its worst shape since the early '80s, a change of focus seemed appropriate.

Last night, USA Today posted excerpts from an interview with Moore along with a new image from the movie. Moore says he's not as interested in being informative as he is in showing the absurdities of Wall Street's behavior:

The movie is not going to be an economics lesson; it's going to be more like a vampire movie. Instead of the main characters feasting on the blood of their victims, they feast on the money. And they never seem to get enough of it.

If nothing else, the movie should offer a welcome chance for people to collectively exorcise a lot of pent up anger and frustration.

  • Gordon Gekko a Free Man Again

Gordon GekkoO.G. white-collar crime lords Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken served less than two years each for their insider-trading transgressions, but apparently Gordon Gekko, the fictional star of Oliver Stone's classic mid-1980s period piece, Wall Street, got dealt a much tougher hand than his real-life counterparts. With Wall Street's latest meltdown generating interest in a Wall Street sequel, Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox is moving forward with the picture, and that the plot "will again center on Gordon Gekko, who has recently been sprung from prison..." Key word, of course, being "recently." Twenty years for SEC violations?!? First order of business for Gekko upon release: Retain new legal counsel!

  • Looks like greed really is good.

Drunken stockbrokers everywhere rejoice! According to our friends at Yahoo! news, after 20 years of waiting, a sequel to Wall Street is on the filming docket.

Yes, indeed, Mr. Typecast-as-the-white-collar-man-who-engages-in-inappropriate-sex himself, Michael Douglas will be reprising his role as Gordon Gecko, who evidently now works in the world of hedge fundery. The sequel is to be called Money Never Sleeps, which anyone who has peered into their wallet at 2AM knows is very true.

Conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone, who directed Wall Street, will not be directing the sequel. He is probably too busy compiling his masterpiece Alexander 34: Please Love Me.
