  • John Carpenter's Riot May Be Falling Apart
    Riot

Legendary independent filmmaker John Carpenter's next project, Riot, was supposed to team him up with actor Nicolas Cage, but it now appears as if thats not going to happen. Originally under the working title of Scared Straight, the name of the 70s documentary the movie is based on, Riot would have seen Cage playing a prisoner that comes to the aid of the governor's son, kidnapped during a prison riot.

A Riot teaser poster was released last year listing Carpenter and Cage's names (with the phrase "Credits Not Contractural" in fine print at the bottom). However, it now appears as if Cage is dropping out of the project. Producer Katie Chonacas told ScreenCrave:

I don't think it's happening anymore. We got Nic Cage to do a two picture deal, and the two picture deal was with Riot however he has the option to exchange it with another film. I'm not sure what movie it will be, but it will probably be another film. But, yeah we got John Carpenter for the deal, it was Nic Cage and John Carpenter and now it might not happen.

When asked if Carpenter would stay on the movie if Cage were to leave, Chonacas said:

I don't know. I'm not sure, probably not.

If Cage does drop out, this will be the second high-profile project that he has abandoned in the past two months. Cage recently dropped out of Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet live-action movie, in which he was to play the villain. Cage ultimately declined the role because he felt that he didn't have the opportunity to develop the character. Christoph Waltz of Inglourious Basterds fame stepped in to replace Cage in Hornet, which is currently in production.

  • David Goyer Discusses Ghost Rider 2

Ghost RiderWhen Sony announced that Ghost Rider 2 was moving forward, an older David Goyer script was mentioned as the possible basis of the storyline. Collider spoke with Goyer and asked him to explain how a script he wrote so long ago became the basis for a sequel.

I wrote a script for that about 9 years ago, and Sony decided and the producers, that they wanted to make that as the sequel script. So, in this case, I'm coming on as a producer and we're basically just doing a polish of my 9-year-old script. so there's not as much work involved. So that was kind of nice to see that one come full circle after 9 years.

Goyer's original script called for an R-rating, though that will not be the case for Ghost Rider 2. Still, Goyer insists that shouldn't put off any fans.

It was definitely written as a hard-R. originally I was writing it, Stephen Norrington was going to direct it and I was going to produce it and it was a, you know, Blade-type film, and now they want it to be PG-13. That having been said, The Dark Knight has come out, and The Dark Knight was ... I like to say it was sort of skirting the bleeding edge of PG-13, so I think that people feel like you can get away with a lot ... not get away, but people's concepts of what a PG-13 movie can be I think have changed. There's no question we're going to have tone some things down, but I don't think we'll have to do that much.

Ghost Rider 2 currently has no scheduled release date. Nicolas Cage is expected to return and hopes the sequel goes in a "whole other direction."

  • Ghost Rider Sequel Moving Forward

Ghost RiderAfter Disney's $4 billion acquisition of Marvel, any movie studio owning rights to a Marvel property went scrambling to continue development or risk having those rights reclaimed by Marvel and its new parent company.

According to a report from Variety, Columbia is now actively pursuing a sequel to Ghost Rider, and has brought in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight scribe David Goyer to work out the story and supervise writers for the Nicloas Cage vehicle. Goyer says he hasn't officially signed on for the sequel yet, but plans are in place to base the sequel on a Ghost Rider script Goyer wrote years ago. Director Mark Steven Johnson used his own script for the original Ghost Rider.

Columbia isn't the only studio worried about losing rights to Marvel characters. Fox is rebooting The Fantastic Four and every possible X-Men movie, while Sony is already writing the scripts for Spider-Man 5 and 6.

Having Goyer attached to Ghost Rider 2 would likely be considered a positive move for Cage, who is returning for the sequel and has already stated that he is hoping to go in a "whole other direction."

  • Nicolas Cage's Superman Costume Test

Yes, it's true. Prior to Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, there was indeed a planned version of the rebooted Superman franchise in which director Tim Burton would remake the man of steel in his quirky style — and Nicolas Cage would portray the hero. The surprising thing is that it got past costuming stage, as is evidenced by this leaked video that recently appeared online.

All reports say that this video is legit, and by the looks of it, comic book movie fans dodged a speeding bullet.

  • Nic Cage Explains Why He Dropped Out of The Green Hornet

Nick CageRecent casting news that Inglourious Basterd's Christoph Waltz landed the head villain role in The Green Hornet has everyone wondering why Nicolas Cage, who had the role first, dropped out.

Well, the actor answered the question, himself, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it's the same old song: "creative differences" with star and screenwriter Seth Rogen and director Michel Gondry.

The Green Hornet was something that I wanted to do, I think Michel Gondry is very talented and I had hoped it would work but I think Seth Rogen and Michel had a different take on the character.... I had to have some humanity and to try to give it something where you could understand why the character was the way he was but I don't think there was enough time to develop it.

Cage continued by saying that he "wasn't interested in just being just a straight-up bad guy who was killing people willy-nilly."

While it's nice to see actors looking for scripts with character development, isn't that partly the actor's job to provide? In any case, it'll be interesting to see what Waltz does with the role.

  • Nicolas Cage Will Not Star in Green Hornet
    Nichols Cage

It's a Nicolas Cage news spree! Just a week ago Cage jumped on-board for Patrick Lussier's revenge flick, Drive Angry. And just yesterday, he joined another revenge movieRoger Donaldson's Hungry Rabbit Jumps.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter writes that Cage has dropped out of the upcoming adaptation of The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen and directed by Michel Gondry. A few days ago, Sony announced that the movie would go forward shortly and that Cage was in negotiations to portray the villain. Apparently, the negotiations failed.

So just one week into production, The Green Hornet hits another snag. There was no announcement regarding a replacement for Cage, although we can only hope the issue gets resolved sooner rather than later.

  • Nicolas Cage to Star in Hungry Rabbit Jumps
    Nicholas Cage

On its blog Heat Vision, The Hollywood Reporter writes that Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the upcoming thriller Hungry Rabbit Jumps. The news comes just one week after the announcement that Cage would star in another revenge flick, Drive Angry.

Hungry Rabbit Jumps is being directed by Roger Donaldson, who also helmed Thirteen Days, The Recruit, and The World's Fastest Indian. The script by Robert Tannen involves a man who becomes entangled with an underground vigilante organization after his wife falls victim to a brutal crime.

Tobey Maguire is acting as one of the movie's producers (through his company, Maguire Entertainment), and the movie is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in New Orleans this coming January. Also producing is Jim Stern of Endgame, who commented briefly on the project:

As a company, we've been wanting to do a thriller for a long time ... In the best of the Hitchcockian tradition, we've got a character who's offered the chance for vengeance and he finds himself in over his head.

No release date or other casting decisions have been announced.

  • Sony Confirms Green Hornet Production and Casting Decisions
    Seth Rogen

There are plenty of reasons for fans to be excited about the upcoming adaptation of The Green Hornet. For one, it's being helmed by Michel Gondry, who lent his visual panache to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep. So we can expect an eye-opener. Secondly, Seth Rogen has invested himself fully in the project: He will not only executive produce and write the script, but also star (in the title role, no less). But unfortunately, the big news as of late has been the movie's unstable release date. After being pushed back several times, the pic is now tentatively scheduled for a December 2010 release, much to the chagrin of rabid fans.

Not to worry, though, because Rogen, Gondry, and company are moving forward anyway. Screen Rant reports that Sony released an official statement saying that the movie is a go. We can thus assume that production will begin shortly, and we will undoubtedly see oodles of production photos, stills, maybe even the odd interview or two.

Sony also commented on the movie's cast, possibly to dispel any ongoing rumors:

In addition to Rogen, the film also stars Taiwanese actor-pop star JayChou as Kato, Cameron Diaz (Charlie's Angels, What Happens in Vegas), Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), David Harbour (Revolutionary Road), and Tom Wilkinson (Valkyrie). Nicolas Cage is also in negotiations to appear in the film.

So, it appears Nicolas Cage is indeed still in the running to play the criminal mastermind Mr. X. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.

  • Nicolas Cage Will Star in Drive Angry

The latest in the long list of recently announced productions that will use 3-D technology, Drive Angry is a "revenge movie" by director Patrick Lussier. Actor Nicolas Cage has signed on to star as a man with a serious case of road rage after his daughter is murdered and his granddaughter is kidnapped.

Lussier is no stranger to 3-D, having helmed My Bloody Valentine 3-D. While almost universally panned by critics, Valentine (with a production budget of only $15 million) managed to earn $51 million at the box office. Not much else is known about the plot of this Taken-meets-Death Proof movie, but production on Drive Angry is expected to begin in Louisiana in April 2010.

  • Lionsgate Wins the Kick-Ass Sweepstakes

Kick-AssWith three studios fighting for the the comic book-adaptation movie Kick-Ass, Lionsgate ended up winning the distribution rights, much to writer/director Matthew Vaughn's delight:

Making and financing Kick-Ass has been an amazing experience, and we've had two important goals from the start: make a singularly entertaining film and find the right studio to release it. With Lionsgate, I know that I've got a supportive and fearless team behind me. It's going to be fun working together to bring the film to audiences and those who are already fans of the comic book.

Kick-Ass was independently financed before Lionsgate picked up the rights. A release date is still unspecified, though Kick-Ass will open some time in 2010. The movie, should it follow the comic book, will be the violent story of a teenager who decides to become a costumed vigilante and meets a variety of crazed copycats. The bloody nature of the movie didn't frighten Lionsgate, who typically release genre flicks like the Saw movies and the upcoming Gamer. What sold Lionsgate on the picture was the huge response Kick-Ass received at the San Diego Comic-Con, according to Kick-Ass producer Tarquin Pack:

The massive response we received at Comic-Con has been hugely important in launching the next wave of momentum for the film, and Lionsgate's marketing and distribution talents are a perfect fit for us. Lionsgate is a studio that is not afraid to do things differently, and that is the attitude that has characterized Kick-Ass from the very start.

The way Pack and Vaughn are talking, it looks like their faithful adaptation won't be compromised on its way to the theaters, which should be good news for fans.

  • Wanted Creator Mark Millar Asks Fans for Help with Kick-Ass and Says "No" to Superman

Comic book scribe Mark Millar took the stage at Wizard World Chicago to discuss the process of adapting his Kick-Ass comic book into a major motion picture directed by Matthew Vaughn, and ended up pleading with the audience for help.

According to Millar, securing funding for the film wasn't easy, due to the violent subject matter and course language. Fortunately, Millar's friend, director Matthew Vaughn, believed in the project and decided to champion it.

(Vaughn's) a good pal of mine, and he loved the book before it came out. He saw the scripts ahead of time because he likes to see what other pals are up to. And, he said, 'I really want to make this movie.' And, what I normally do with like Wanted is that we'll make the comic, and then an agent takes it out to all the whores in Hollywood, and they start bidding, and it's all out of your hands. Hopefully it all works out. Luckily Wanted did. It worked out good. But what happened with this is that it's very difficult material.

Unfortunately, Millar and Vaughn found that they couldn't retain the integrity of the source material and secure studio funding, so Vaughn took matters into his own hands, raising $50 million in investments so that they could make the movie the way they wanted to make it. Now, Millar is asking fans to help decide whether Kick-Ass receives a theatrical release or goes straight to DVD. After showing footage of Kick-Ass at Wizard World Chicago this weekend, Millar said:

If you can go on the internet immediately after this happens and just give your honest opinion — I'm pretty sure you'll like it because it's really well made and really well done — but that's the one favor I'd ask everyone. You may think it's shite. I hope you love it because we do.

Before leaving the stage, Millar was also asked about the rumors that he and Vaughn were conspiring to produce a sequel to Superman Returns. He said:

There was no interest in me, but they went to Matthew because he's a very well-liked Hollywood director. I love Superman, but Kick-Ass has been such an amazing experience that I realized I'd rather be George Lucas. We just go off and make our own movies and we own them ... that's the model I'd like to follow with future stuff.

Kick-Ass stars Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage and Chloë Moretz.

    Nicholas Cage

Variety reports that Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz are both in negotiations with Columbia Pictures to star in Michel Gondry's upcoming adaptation of The Green Hornet.

The movie already has Seth Rogen on board in the title role. If cast, Cage would play the villain, most likely the gangster Mr. X, and Diaz would portray the love interest of the Hornet's alter ego, newspaper publisher Britt Reid.

Rogen wrote the screenplay for the movie along with Evan Goldberg and the two are also executive producing. Production begins this fall, with a release scheduled for July 9, 2010.

  • Nicolas Cage Wants a Completely Different Ghost Rider

Ghost RiderFor fans who felt Ghost Rider didn't live up to expectations, Nicolas Cage has some comforting words regarding the sequel. In an interview with MTV, Cage spoke of Ghost Rider 2 becoming more of a reboot than a typical sequel.

Without talking too much about it... I would like to do a reconceive. I would like to go in a whole other direction. I think that's what they're talking about. I would make it much less of a western and more of an international story.

The international angle Cage is referring to may be a teaming of Ghost Rider with the Catholic Church; a potentially darker version of Ghost Rider not unlike the "philosophical" one Cage described previously.

  • Kick-Ass 2 Already in the Works

Kick-Ass, the movie based on the popular comic of the same name, won't see theaters until later this year. Even so, a sequel for the Matthew Vaughn-directed production is already on its way.

Mark Millar, the movie's co-creator, gave some sequel details to SciFiWire.

Kick-Ass 2 is already being plotted out. We're planning it, because all the actors are quite young and we have to make it relatively quickly. So we'll definitely do that inside the next 18 to 24 months.

Millar credited the enormous success of Wanted for the Kick-Ass sequel.

Wanted made $350 million. So that was the thing that opened the doors. I didn't expect that. It made a ton of money, and it was a property nobody had ever heard of. And I think Kick-Ass is going to be even bigger. Everybody who's seen bits of it were rubbing their hands together with excitement because they think they've stumbled onto something very big.

Kick-Ass is the story of Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a high school kid who decides to become a costumed hero. Nicolas Cage and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Role Models) co-star as fellow vigilantes. If the movie is anything like the comic, expect bad language and blood-soaked violence.

Played by Chloe Moretz, Mindy's a pre-teen assassin who's been trained by her father, played by Nicolas Cage, since the age of four.

Kick Ass is about Dave Lizewski, an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who decides to become a superhero -- even though he has no powers, abilities, or training. After getting beat up more often than not, he inspires other vigilantes when his exploits are shown on YouTube. Matthew Vaughn is directing Kick Ass, and we've been assured of an ultra-violent romp not seen in your typical superhero fare.

  • Megan Fox to Go Green?

Megan FoxThere's never been any rumor that fanboys have wanted to be true more than this one: Megan Fox will play She-Hulk in an upcoming big screen adaptation. Reports are quoting an unnamed "source" that claim the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star will "make She-Hulk sexier but even more savage than the Hulk, which is why Megan is the big favorite for the lead. She'll be green of course and will have to hang on to a few more pieces of clothes than the male version when she transforms."

Fox will have competition if Nicolas Cage has anything to say about it. Cage is apparently working on She-Hulk and wants Ghost Rider co-star Eva Mendes to play the part:

I'd like to see Eva play her. It would be her in a bikini just kicking a lot of ass, throwing cars. I'm trying to put that together as we speak.

Speaking, that is, to a "source." Keep your fingers crossed, comic book fans, and check back with ReelzChannel for updates!

  • Nicolas Cage Talks Ghost Rider 2

Ghost RiderRemember Ghost Rider? The movie with Nicolas Cage as the skull-faced comic book character riding around on a flaming motorcycle that looked like it might be good but ultimately was really disappointing? Ready for a sequel? Cage is.

In a recent interview, Cage told MTV News that a writer, and even a new director, will be needed for a potential sequel. Apparently, Ghost Rider and Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson, according to Cage, "has his own thing going on." What, ruining another possible comic book franchise?

The changes might be a good thing, since Cage says a new Ghost Rider would have to differ greatly from its predecessor:

It has to have that action horror element and go deeper into that if it were to happen and [it should] keep us asking questions. Keep it interesting on a philosophical level.

While that does sound better, Cage admits that any decision to move forward is "up to the studio. It’s really in their hands."

  • Crashes and Numbers and Gore in New Clips from Knowing

KnowingThree new clips from Knowing have just been released, giving us a more detailed look at the movie's really spectacular subway and plane crash sequences, as well as some tension-building scenes in which the Nicolas Cage character begins puzzling out the horror behind the mysterious numbers. The train wreck is the real standout here. Another clip of it was released earlier, but that one was more focused on Cage's futile attempts to limit the damage. This time it's all about the carnage and mayhem. In a recent interview with SciFi Wire, director Alex Proyas talked about the inspiration behind the sequence:

So what we decided to do is we had the train actually leap the tracks and go sliding across the subway [platform], and I just ... find that, you know, carnage in crowded places is one of the most horrific things you can possibly imagine, because there's nowhere to go. So this whole notion that a train carriage at a hundred miles an hour is ... skidding across a platform, and you've got nowhere to run, and you're going to get mowed down, is a pretty brutal concept.

Next time you stand on a crowded subway platform, it's definitely going to have you keeping your eye out for a quick exit strategy. Watch:

  • Three New Kick Ass Images

Three new pics of Mark Millar's comic book movie Kick Ass have appeared.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kick Ass is about Dave Lizewski, an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a superhero, even though he has no powers, abilities, training or meaningful reason to do so.

While confronting local thugs, he manages to get his ass kicked enough times that he develops a bit of fighting skill, and even inspires other vigilantes to the cause when his exploits are shown on YouTube. But the odds change drastically when he incurs the wrath of professional bad-guys.

Uber-nerd Christopher Mintz-Plasse of Superbad fame plays arch-villain The Red Mist, the son of a mobster who faces off against the would-be superhero. With a little McLovin, odds are this will be a fun movie. Although, if it's anything like the R-rated comic it won't be for kiddies under 17.

Aaron Johnson plays the lead role along with Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz, aka Big Daddy and Hit Girl (in the second picture) -- and friends played by Clark Duke and Evan Peters.

This will be Millar's second comic novel adapted into a movie. Last year's hit Wanted was the first. Kick-Ass is due out later this year.

  • New Knowing Poster Ups the Ante on Apocalypse

    Is Earth's number up?

A provocative new poster for Alex Proyas' apocalyptic thriller Knowing has popped up at Ain't It Cool, teasing a truly ultimate cataclysm, with the Earth itself on fire and disintegrating into numbers from the South Pole up. Assuming it's more than just a very cool promo image, it looks as if star Nicolas Cage really will have his hands full trying to prevent a bit more than your run-of-the-mill preordained apocalyptic disaster. The concept is not totally unprecedented though. It bears more than a passing resemblance to the opening sequence of Showtime's sci-fi series Odyssey 5, in which the earth dramatically explodes before your eyes. Interestingly, in that series too, the main characters, who have been sent back into the past, try to avert a literal planetary destruction about which they are the only ones in the know.

  • McLovin Getting Ready to Kick-Ass!

Way above PG this time...The Mark Millar comic Kick-Ass, which has been dubbed too violent for Sony and several other major Hollywood studios, is moving forward as an indie. Christopher Mintz-Plasse -- who showed off his ballistic prowess in Superbad as the thuggish, gun-wielding McLovin -- is in talks to play another heavy. This time a gangster's son. Last week, Nicolas Cage joined the cast.

Meanwhile: Too violent for Hollywood? What could possibly be too violent for Hollywood? Does Kick-Ass show non-exclusive premium cable distribution deals getting brutally eviscerated, or something similarly horrifying to the average producer? Nope, it's simply about a bunch of really young crimefighters taking on grown-up baddies in Hollywood's usual shoot-first-then-shoot-more-later style.

  • Nicolas Cage Going to Prison

Nicolas CageNo, Cage isn't being punished for the crime against moviegoers that was Ghost Rider. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he's in talks to star in Scared Straight, a "prison thriller" about "a troubled youth who's sent to prison off the Scared Straight crime-prevention program, which imprisons delinquent teens for a short period in the hopes of deterring them from a life of crime. While the teen is there, a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage."

Cage will be playing a "lifer" who helps bust the teen (who I can only assume will be played by Shia LaBeouf) out of prison. Halloween helmer John Carpenter is in talks to direct.

  • Astro Boy Perhaps at Next Year's Comic-Con

    Comic-Con 2008: San Diego

AstroboyA movie that could very well be at Comic-Con next year is Astro Boy, the animated sci-fi story will star the voices of Scarlett Johanssen, Donald Sutherland, Nicolas Cage and Freddie Highmore in the title role. The movie is set for release next year, but here's the new poster. David Bowers, who was one of the directors of Flushed Away in 2006, is the director of Astro Boy. He tells ReelzChannel that the movie will go more for the heart than the laughs featured in Flushed Away.

It's based on the classic 1950s anime about a young android boy (Astro) who's created by his father to replace the real son he's lost. Astro doesn't work out at first but then it's discovered he was gifted with superior powers and skills, as well as the ability to experience human emotions. It's a very emotional story.

  • Will Nicolas Cage Go Full Frontal in a Bad Lieutenant Remake?

Nic CageBoy, the remakes are coming in faster than ever these days. Case in point: Variety reports that Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in an update of 1992's Bad Lieutenant, a film perhaps best known for featuring star Harvey Keitel entirely in the buff. That, along with various other adult-themed elements (two words: nun rape), helped the original earn an NC-17 rating -- instantly making it a must-watch for mischievous junior-high kids everywhere.

Even more strange than the timing of the Bad Lieutenant remake, however, is its choice of director: Werner Herzog, the eccentric (read: crazy) German filmmaker of Fitzcarraldo fame.

Seriously, this one's almost too good to be true. Don't expect Cage to repeat Keitel's legendary full frontal nude scene, however. Remember, this is the same guy who turned comic book bad boy Ghost Rider into a jellybean-eating, Carpenters-loving wuss. We'll be lucky if the Bad Lieutenant remake is edgy enough to garner a PG-13 rating.

  • Movie news: Nicolas Cage and Tony Scott

Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in The Vanished, a thriller about a man whose college-aged, American-born Muslim son goes missing overseas. It will be the studio feature directing debut Palestinian-born director Hany Abu-Assad.

Director Tony Scott (Man on Fire, Deja Vu) will be making a movie about Don Aronow, aka the inventor of the cigarette boat. We weren't originally sure how exciting that would be, but then we discovered that Aronow was killed in a mob-style hit in Miami in 1987 after receiving a $20 million contract to build boats for US Customs agents to catch Columbian drug smugglers--who liked using his cigarette boats to smuggle their drugs.

    Okay, that could work.
