  • Green Lantern Movie Gets $150 Million Budget and a Studio in Sydney

Green LanternThe Hollywood Reporter has put a number on the amount of money that Warner Bros will be laying down for the Green Lantern movie. Reportedly, the $150M figure is about the same that they shelled out for their most recent super movie Watchmen.

We almost had a nerdgasm when script details came out last summer. The proposed storyline is gigantic in scale, and if loyally followed, it won't be your typical earth-bound comic book movie, but a space saga of epic proportions -- complete with cosmic battles requiring tons of sweet SFX. It could clearly be kick-ass, and this budget bodes well for the post-production quality of this movie.

Also noted in the news is a release date of December 2010, and the filming location confirmation over at Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia, where the recent decline of the Australian dollar should help stretch that $150 million budget even further. The studio choice may have also been a part of the Warners/Fox legal settlement over Watchmen -- sheer speculation on our part, but still interesting to note.

Now everything is nailed down except a lead actor. So, expect an announcement soon of the star who will slip on the power ring. All are rumors at this point, but some names that have been bandied about are Ryan Gosling, Trekkers Anton Yelchin, Chris Pine and ex-90210er Brian Austin Green -- who has a winning name for the role.

  • Still No One Cast as Green Lantern

Green LanternWith fan favorite actor Ryan Gosling turning down the role of Hal Jordan, otherwise known as the Green Lantern, and rumored second choice Sam Worthington too busy with Clash of the Titans to accept as well, LatinoReview reported last week that Terminator Salvation and Star Trek star Anton Yelchin was being considered for the role. Fans called for blood over the news, however Yelchin tells SciFiWire that there's no reason for alarm:

I had no idea about that. I think I'm probably too young. I mean, no one's approached me, no one's said anything to me. So I imagine I'm just too young. I mean, it's a great character, but I don't know anything about it. ... I haven't heard anything about it.

However, with Green Lantern set for a December 17, 2010 release, a casting decision should be made soon. Producers are apparently going back to Gosling to see if he will reconsider the role. Who do you think should be cast?

  • Sort-of-Famous Actor May Play Sort-of-Famous Superhero

Ryan GoslingRyan Gosling, who deserves to be a bigger deal in Hollywood than he is, may play the Green Lantern, who, according to our calculations, is the third most famous green superhero, behind the Hulk and the Green Hornet. (Correct us if we're wrong.) Playing a superhero may seem like a stretch for Gosling, who's kind of a poor man's Ed Norton (brainy, intense, kind of highfalutin'). But Norton played the Hulk. And apparently one version of the Green Lantern's comic book visage was based on the face of Paul Newman, and when we look at Gosling, we see a little bit of Newman too. Plus, what do you do after you play a guy who falls in love with a life-sized silicone love doll, as Gosling did in Lars and the Real Girl? Obviously, you don some lime-green Lycra muscle-tights and fight bad guys.

  • Why did Gosling really leave The Lovely Bones?

Last week we reported that Ryan Gosling dropped out of his role in Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones just before filming began.

The decision was attributed to 'creative differences,' but now the Canadian actor, who is getting raves for his current work in Lars and the Real Girl, is speaking up. It appears as though Gosling and Jackson both had concerns that he was too young for the part he signed on for. "Peter and I tried to make it work and ultimately it just didn't," Gosling explains. "I think the film is much better off with Mark Wahlberg in that role."

Gosling says it is the media who are trying to spice up the story with aspersions of fighting artistes. Since his role was the father of a murdered 14-year-old girl and Gosling is just a tender 27, it sounds plausible enough to us.

  • Gosling out of Best Actor running already?

Love me, love my dollThere are some nasty rumors floating about the the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) are taking a pass on screening Lars and the Real Girl--the surprisingly well-done little indie about a sad, shy, Midwestern man who orders a Real Doll and then believes she is his living girlfriend.

If the rumors are true, they mean that actor Ryan Gosling--who was nominated last year for his performance in Half Nelson--can be crossed off your list for potential Best Actor nominees. And we think that is just plain old sad.

True, it's become fashionable to talk about how terrific an actor Gosling is. But the thing is, he is really great--and if he treats a quirky little ditty about a man who thinks a sex doll is talking to him with as much respect as one about a teacher with a secret drug addition, then don't we think the Academy should, too?

  • Starwatching

As part of my job, I get to interview celebrities. It's a dirty job, all right, but someone's got to do it. But what I found most shocking was when I started seeing them elsewhere.

So who have I seen so far?

Morgan Freeman in the elevator of the Four Seasons, preparing to golf.

Keanu Reeves waiting for the valet to bring his car at the Four Seasons. I used to stage manage for his sister in college, but I resisted the urge to tell him to tell her I said hello.

My husband saw Jake Gyllenhaal in his car in my office parking lot. And he saw Giovanni Ribisi getting coffee in Larchmont Village and Ryan Gosling walking downtown.

Kari Wuhrer with her husband and two VERY cute kids at table next to us at a restaurant in Larchmont. Remember her from Remote Control?

Alex Kingston (aka Dr. Elizabeth Corday from ER) having Valentine's Day dinner at the same hip restaurant as me.

Bradley Cooper (Alias) and Jennifer Esposito (Crash) taking in a show at the awesome DeafWest theater in Noho.

Katherine Helmond(Mona from Who's the Boss) at Suzan Lori-Parks' 365 festival.
